Product placement is an example of a popular form of advertising characteristic for the Polish TV shows. Film and TV writers in Poland are keen on using this method also in TV shows. As product placement has got a strong influence on the audience, the viewers perceive the film reality as the reflection of real life. TV series fiction in turn influences the consumerist preferences of the adresses. The strategy of product placement in the Polish TV series, however, still leaves much to be desired as directors find it difficult to apply the method to suitable scenes in a subtle way. It happens that the product being placed remains onscreen for too long, the number of the products per single episode is too high and the dialogues aimed at highlighting the advantages of given products seem too artificial. All those actions have a negative result on the final decision of the viewers on whether to buy the advertised goods or not.

Kieslowski’s series fulfills all the criteria assigned to the contemporary new generation television series, and can act as a reference point for interpreting Poland’s first new generation series by HBO, In treatment (Bez tajemnic, 2011–2013). The two titles are also linked by the same Polish film tradition, i.e. the cinema of moral concern, even though In treatment is based on foreign format.

Can a TV series be treated as a space for pedagogical discourses? The answer seems obvious. For modern culture pedagogy, it is a reservoir of knowledge about society. TV series is a characteristic phenomenon in contemporary audiovisual culture. It describes our world in a very honest way. At the same time, it talks about problems affecting various social groups, which are often considered to be “not serious” in informal debates. The television series, as an element of popular art, is an interesting and valuable “social document”. The goal of modern education is to develop a reflective critical view of audiovisual products that surround us. A critical look at fictitious images of reality helps us better understand our world that is the most real. The article is a voice in the discussion on the Sex Education series, as an example of the image of today’s youth, their dilemmas and anxieties woven into school reality, as well as their relations with peer groups and parents.

One of the most discussed TV series of recent years is Fauda (directed by A. Issaharoff and L. Raz). In the article, I discuss the reception of the film in the Israeli and Western media, as well as the ways of representing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the series in the context of the so-called war on terrorism and forms of violence. In my work, I am particularly interested in the following questions: in what form did the idea of conflict return to the screens and to the public debate? How has the Palestinian issue been marginalized in the Israeli public consciousness? Under what conditions does the violence intensify? Taking into account the forms of violence presented in the series, I am inclined to the thesis that the creators of “Fauda” are trying, sometimes with greater, sometimes less success, to look critically at the reality dictated by the laws of war.

Due to the growing popularity of video games, gaming itself has become a shared experience among media audiences worldwide. The phenomenon of avatar-based games has led to the emergence of new storytelling practices. The paper proposes a typology of tropes in these avatar-based narratives focusing on non-game case studies. Suggested tropes are also confronted with the latest research on avatars in the area of game studies and current knowledge of the issues concerning the player-avatar relationship. Some of the most popular misconceptions regarding the gameplay experience and its representation in non-game media are exposed as a result of this analysis. The research confirms that popular culture perceives gaming experience as closely related to the player identity, as the latter inspires new genres of non-game narratives.

The post-modern gothic simultaneously makes reference to already well-grounded experience, such as the repertoire of motifs and narrative prefigurations which have entered the artistic canon of the convention for good. A lot of figures and characters identified with horror become a part of the transfictional process of allocating them in new settings and re-designing their fictional biographies. Although in TV series reinterpretations of classical literary narratives quite often focus on instilling a positive image of erstwhile impersonation of numinosum, they do offer in return a construal of more contemporaneous fears, aligned with today’s socio-political-economic landscape. This article will include the following series based on literary prototypes representing the very canon of gothic fiction: Dracula, Penny Dreadful, Jekyll and Hyde, Second Chance and Sleepy Hollow as well as elements of productions connected with literary narrations of horror, such as Once Upon a Time.

The article presents the entanglement of the Catholic Church and the media by focusing on the case of the Second Vatican Council and the television broadcast of its events. The mass media attention of the council stimulated, according to the author, a double level: the media conveyed more information about the church event than it had ever done before, but at the same time, the mass media influenced the discussion of the council fathers. The article also analyzes, through the lens of the Council, the recent relationship between the Catholic Church and the Italian television.

The Dukes of Hazzard
Opis:
The heyday of ‘Redneck’ cinema—the 1970s to early 1980s, saw the rise of the Redneck Rebel—a Southern or otherwise ‘hick’ anti-hero who rode around the countryside like a modern-day cowboy vanquishing evil. His ‘horse’ was his car—a beefed up/souped up muscle car that often became the star of the show and overshadowed the anti-hero himself. This article examines the Redneck Rebel through the lens of one American TV series—The Dukes of Hazzard. This popular 1980s TV series, along with its antecedents and contemporaries, underscore several important points that reinforce typical conservative American virtues: freedom, fighting the ‘good fight,’ an overt heterosexuality, a particular reveling in a sarcastic ‘sticking out the tongue’ at the overly sophisticated, overly arrogant, ‘anti-American,’ and well-heeled parts of American society.

In her essay, the author recalls literary contexts (including John Donne, Michel Houellebecq and Ernest Hemingway) and philosophical and anthropological contexts (including Aristotle, Thomas Merton, Maurice Blanchot, Jean-Paul Sartre and Gilles Deleuze) presenting the poetic “I’s” various ways of approaching friendship. The quotation from a German translation of John Donne’s poem used in the title of the article is in itself a meaningful phonetic wordplay: “Kein Mensch ist ein Ich-Land” (no man is an “I” land, no man is an island). The main part of the essay includes an interpretation of the television series Lost — Joanna Roszak investigates philosophical references in the series and indicates biblical contexts (“Am I my brother’s keeper?”). A very apt comment to many episodes in the series is, according to the author, the formula told by Z. Herbert’s Fortinbras: Ani nam witać się ani żegnać żyjemy na archipelagach/ A ta woda te słowa cóż mogą cóż mogą” [It is not for us to greet each other or bid farewell we live on archipelagos/ and that water these words what can they do what can they do prince]. It is a similar defencelessness in which the main characters of Lost try to struggle the reality, even if they live together, and die all alone. Collective memory has become a safeguard for the community in the world, which is to be destined for homelessness and forlornness. The other person though becomes a reference point — it is him or her that makes it possible to find the way home.

The present research analyzes the inequality of gender representation in transnational TV series. For this purpose, a content analysis was carried out on 18 episodes of the US crime show Law & Order: Criminal Intent and its French adaptation Paris Enquêtes Criminelles. To conduct this research, we used the artificial intelligence toolkit the Möbius Trip, which is equipped with a gender and emotion recognition feature and relies on big data. The main findings indicate that male characters overwhelmingly dominate the onscreen time equally in both the US and the French versions. The data also show that male characters are more emotionally expressive and that women tend to display a wider range of emotions. The French characters are slightly more emotionally expressive than their American counterparts. The data also suggest that male characters tend to display violent behavior and that female characters tend to be portrayed as a victim in both versions of the show. The emotions-related results show a trend, but the difference of emotions between male and female characters and between the French and American cultures remain fairly narrow.

Despite the title reference, the BBC’s Ripper Street (2012‒2014) was not intended as another Jack the Ripper story; the infamous killer’s absence is acutely felt in its first three seasons, though. The paper examines the way his acts are being recalled for the characters and viewers, but also reconstructed in a performance and copycat murders, and how, even though the Ripper is long gone, people may become his victims. The absence as echoed in the series plot and setting is a commentary on both the Victorian and modern fascination with the unsolved case.

The article is devoted to the content analysis of 19 broadcasts for children and teens in six leading television channels dedicated to minors recipients in Poland. The study has been conducted on the basis of 16 criteria reflecting the positive and negative attributes of the programmes. It has aimed to answer the question of how the world is depicted in these broadcasts, and furthermore what socio-cultural patterns are transmitted to children and adolescents watching their favourite fairy tales and film heroes. The research conducted has proved that it is possible to identify both the best, most valuable from the point of view of the child’s development and socialization channel (it is MiniMini+) and the most harmful, presenting negative values and negative patterns channel (which is Cartoon Network). The text presents the first in Polish media and sociological studies comparative analysis of such a large number of broadcasts for children and youth, and the analysis so widely verifying the content and formal elements of these broadcasts.

The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the potential didactic value of medical series in the context of patient-centred and biomedical approaches to medical practice, as well as to the way they are represented in language. We shall argue that these two paradigms dictate given modes of reasoning as to, for example, what health/ disease is and the patient-doctor role relationship. The biomedical model establishes disease as a malfunction of the body (which can be restored) and the patient as a passive recipient of treatment. By contrast, patient-centred medicine advocates a holistic approach to wellness by taking into consideration psychosocial aspects. Having these two models in mind and by adopting a social-constructivist approach to language, it is possible to analyse communication in a particular (pop)cultural text and examine the message from the perspective of mediated content about broadly understood health. The paper is organised as follows: it starts with a discussion of the evolution of medical TV series and a systematic review of studies dealing with their pedagogic role. Next it provides the analysis of two seasons of the Polish medical series Medics (Pol. Lekarze), giving special attention to the holistic presentation of the patient found in this multimodal media text.

The article presents the methodological assumptions and practical guidance on conducting a group interview supported by film material. The discussion is based on my own experience from the project, which dealt with the reception of traditional TV series and post-soap series. To this end, I organized and led in various parts of Poland four focus groups with residents of the post-PGR villages (mini-group, affinity group). The aim of this paper is to show that the group interviews are a good research technique not only in commercial marketing research, as it is usually taken for granted, but also in an academic context. The article consists of five parts. First, I present the achievements of Polish cultural studies in the field of television audience research. Next, I discuss general assumptions of group interviews supported by film material. In the third part I present my research project, which helped me to draw the conclusions. The fourth part is an analysis of the benefits and risks of such interviews. In the fifth, summarizing part, I present a research scheme involving the group interviews supported by film material.
