Opis:
The cycle Phantoms in the Atelier is probably the only artistic expression of Piotr Stachiewicz (1858–1938) on the topic of an artist and creation. Stachiewicz was famous most of all for his religious and genre scenes, press and book illustrations and separately edited graphic cycles of which The Queen of Heaven. Legends about God’s Mother of 1893 is the best known. The discussed in this article cycle Phantoms in the Atelier was executed in two versions: the first was completed in 1883–1885 and the following one in ca. 1903. These dates seem to be important in Stachiewicz’s life – they indicate the beginning and the peak of his artistic career. The cycle comprises five paintings entitled: Muse, Irony, Melancholy, Doubt and Solace. Each of them depicts an unreal character – a phantom in the artist’s studio, and these are as follows: Fame, a jester, a genius, Fury and death. The critics of those times had no doubt as the meaning of Stachiewicz’s cycle is concerned. In a review of 1903, when the paintings were shown in Munich, it was stated that they depicted the eternal struggle of an outstanding individual with life obstacles. The phantoms were identified as outer elements which destroyed the art- ist’s actions: jealousy, stupidity, lack of understanding. A thorough analysis of these pictures allows us to propose a hypothesis that the reality presented by Stachiewicz refers to the author’s inner world – the crisis resulting from inability of creation. Every painting may be a metaphor of the artist’s passivity which leads to his death as a creator. Stachiewicz’s work finds its place among popular in Polish painting at the turn of the 19th c. scenes of an artist’s death in his studio. Here belong paintings that remain in realistic convention and fulfill a strong social purpose (e.g. Wacław Koniuszko, In the Atelier, 1885) and symbolic presentations, in which, similarly to the discussed cycle, unreal characters appear (e.g. Jacek Malczewski, Artist’s Death; Antoni Kamieński, An Unfinished Work, 1900). In the context of Stachiewicz’s immense artistic “fertility” and big popularity of his works, choosing the subject of creation crisis and the artist’s death seems to be an ambiguous gesture, which is not confirmed by the painter’s real situation. We can suspect that in the paintings the author, known from his numerous actions promoting his own art, made used the topic of an atelier so quick on the uptake only to make his artistic activity reliable. Just like in the case of a watercolour by Julian Fałat, Two Worlds of 1909, the cycle may be judged as the effect of following a popular convention, an expression of a peculiar game played by the artist with the audience.

Opis:
This article analyzes the poetic imagery of the bilingual, Polish-German, author Piotr (Peter) Lachmann. The key images of his poems bring into focus the problem of keeping up the ties between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Lachmann’s term for this kind of remembrance, made possible by the abundance of pictorial records (photography, fi lm) that transcend the linear axis of time, is ‘sepulchral humanism’. While examining the relations between sacrum and profanum in Lachmann’s verse, the article also notes their contamination by depictions that draw on the aesthetics of disgust and ugliness. Finally, the article discusses the German themes in Lachmann’s poetry and his intellectual bond with Tadeusz Różewicz, a poet and playwright with a better understanding of German culture than most Polish writers of his (post-war) generation.

Opis:
Piotr Zamojski, a nobleman and a Sieradz burgehr (nobilis et famatus) was one of the most notable Sieradz citizens in the second part of the 16th century. He was a juror (1570–1572), a councilor (1575/1576), a landvogt (1577/1578) and the Sieradz mayor (1578/1579). He manufactured and sold various liquors, including beer and booze. He traded in salt, iron and leather and also acted as a pawnbroker offering burghers lawns on their houses and land. The inventory was catalogued on 27 December of 1581. It contains a list of objects from 5 chests deposited in the parish church as well as objects found in individual rooms of the house, animals in a stable and grains in a barn. Movable properties listed in the inventory include clothes, jewelry, farm equipment, equipment for booze manufacture. The inventory comprised all the things from the house and the farm. Their number which was exceptional compared to other burgher inventories is undoubtedly a sign of Piotr Zamojski’s wealth. A big part of the wealth was Agnieszka’s dowry or was from the house of her uncle, canon Franciszek. What seems certain is the fact that Piotr Zamojski inherited his vast collection of books. It included not only books typical for a clergyman, but a big collection of books confirming a humanistic inclination of the owner. Some of them were probably bought by Piotr Zamojski, e.g. books concerning municipal law. The inventory also included various objects offered by the Sieradz gentry due to unpaid taxes. Among those things given to a tax-collector were even family signet rings!

Opis:
The primacy of the Bishop of Rome is an essential, if not a fundamental element of the unity of Church and belongs to the mainstream of ecclesiology throughout its whole history. It is anchored in the study of the doctrine of the New Testament and from the very beginning, starting from the oldest patristic sources, such as the Epistle of Saint Clement of Rome to Corinthians and Ignatius of Antioch’s Epistles, there have been utterances indicating Saint Peters extraordinary role in the universal Church and the significance of his stay in Rome and the foundation of the local Christian community there. The Church Fathers also emphasize that Peter is present in all fundamental events related to the foundation of the Church and it was him who was entrusted with the care for its unity by Jesus. The first writers who start to describe Peter as the Bishop of Rome are Tertullian and Cyprian, who teaches that the Bishop’s authority is like the Apostles’ authority and uses the term cathedra Petri referring to Rome. Although Saint Irenaeus attributes the foundation of the Roman Church to Peter and Paul, in the course of years, especially after the transfer of the Capital of the Empire to Constantinople, he also puts the name of Peter at the top of the list of Roman Bishops. Many biblical scholars and patrologists also emphasize that Paul never laid claim to be the Bishop of Rome.

The present publishing tradition in principle does not use the qualification the Leiturgiarion in tytular of liturgical books. Only Orthodox Church in Romania is except here. Polish editions of this books however appear here very curiously. The Orthodox Church in Poland did not continating tradition editing the Leiturgiarion(according to Peter Mohyla’s Leiturgiarion) and also the Sluzhebnik (according to present of Bulgarian, Russian, Serbian contemporary editions). Fact this is interesting surely both for alone orthodox, as also the totality of Polish publishing market and the represented by him traditions. We have however to deal with separate editions of individual texts of services in concrete languages (church-slavonic, polish). Archieratikon is edition about summary character surely, edited in Warsaw in 1944 year. It was only edition compilation – parallel edition of texts of Liturgy (the Mass) by St. John the Chryzostom and St. Basil the Great, as one text with parallel proper columns every form of service, edited at Warsaw in 1924 year we can with regard recognise for linking to edition extradition vanetian – gorazdan – mohylian with regard on formula of given book. All edited text of orthodox Liturgy (the Mass) have the monothematic character. They are editions of only one, closely definite form of this service.

Directed by Piotr Dumala, Franz Kafka is a very unusual example of a biographical movie. The film is composed of carefully thought-out poetic images which, according to the director himself, reflect the “psychic landscape” of the title character. Thus scenes inspired by Kafka's life and his Diaries intertwine with episodes that refer to his literary works. Dumala shows deep understand-ing of the writer’s characteristic way of depicting reality and the unusual perspective of narration indicates his thorough knowledge of Kafka’s works. Dumala draws on this heritage and creates an emotional portrait of the writer, while at the same time providing a universal reflection on the human condition.

Opis:
The year 1912 – that is a time when dreams of regaining national sovereignty and launching new irredentist activities began to be reborn in the Polish society (in connection with the political turmoil in Europe auguring an imminent outbreak of the “great war”), was associated with a few important historical anniversaries, namely: the 300th anniversary of the death of Rev. Piotr Skarga, the 100th anniversary of the death of Hugo Kołłątaj, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Zygmunt Krasiński and Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, and finally the 100th anniversary of the expedition of Napoleon’s Great Army on Moscow; it was particularly the latter event that was being associated with the hopes of ‘resurrecting’ Poland within its pre-partition borders. The above-mentioned anniversaries created an excellent opportunity for the Poles to manifest – wherever possible – that is chiefly on the territory of autonomous Galicia and among the émigré circles – their patriotic feelings. For the individual political factions, these jubilee celebrations constituted an excellent pretext to intensify the struggle for the proverbial “rule of the souls”. In the year 1912 in Kraków it was primarily the memory of the author of Nie-Boska komedia and Irydion (23 February), and secondly (25–27 September) that of the author of the famous Kazania sejmowe /Diet Sermons/, that were being celebrated. The latter of the two celebrations had, above all, the character of a religious holiday. Whereas in connection with the homage paid to the memory of Zygmunt Krasiński, there appeared clear accents and allusions as well as ideologicalpolitical polemics, no scholar researching the post-partition history of the Poles can pass by with indifference. To put things in a nutshell, for the Kraków conservative-conciliatory circles which eagerly took over patronage over the organization of the celebrations associated with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the “third national poet-bard”, this holiday became an excellent opportunity to recall the warnings of the author of Nie-Boska komedia against the dire consequences of all socially radical ideologies (in the contemporary Galician realities, this meant above all, a warning against the socialists grouped around Ignacy Daszyński) and also against propagating the idea of “deed-work” rather than “deed-struggle” (as all irredentists who were then setting up unions and Polish Rifle Squads seemed to require).

Opis:
Piotr Szulkin was one of the most important creators of the Polish cinema of the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic, who in an intriguing way tried to create a “separate cinema” in the realities of free Poland. Unfortunately to this day, no academic monograph or anthology devoted to his work (film, TV theatre, literary stories and paintings) was published in Poland. On the other hand, popular science articles on the subject of Szulkin’s cinema focus most often on the readings of this phenomenon of Polish culture in political or historiosophical contexts or related to the poetics of dystopia. And yet, both Szulkin’s science-fiction tetralogy, as well as several of his other cinema and television productions, are items that go far beyond these perspectives. Szulkin’s films can be regarded as some very interesting examples of creative drawing from various traditions of francophone thought (including Foucault, Derrida, Baudrillard), aesthetic attitudes of the poetics of absurd and grotesque (with Beckett at the top), and also from selected anthropologists and sociologists of culture (Girard or Bauman). In addition to this kind of tropes in his film studies commemoration of the recently deceased director, Konefał also tries to find narrative threads and strategies from works by Piotr Szulkin, which may seem interesting to the younger generation of viewers who do not know his work (the author relies here on the opinions of students of Gdańsk film studies and Norwegian PhD students from the University of Tromsø).
