    The paper analyses the nation branding as an umbrella concept applied by the Polish cultural diplomacy for the promotion of a positive image of Poland in the world since 2008. The analysis takes the form of a case study of a Project Asia, a new, long-term project aiming to promote brand Polska through high and non-commercial culture in East and South Asia. Since 2010 the project has been executed by Adam Mickiewicz Institute in cooperation with Polish diplomatic missions, Polish Institutes and other Polish institutions engaged in promotion of the Polish culture abroad. Establishing the presence of Polish contemporary culture in East and South Asia has become a significant challenge because of circumstances and contexts much different from those in which IAM used to develop consistent cultural narratives about contemporary Poland. The paper analyses the main institutional and cultural determinants of the project development, the dynamics of its implementation and its adjustment to the cultural realities of Asian countries.

    Great Benefits. the Common Issues Shared by Poetry, Art Criticism and Aesthetics The article constitutes and attempt to outline such a conception of art criticism which would take into consideration post-modern transformations concerning the functioning of the arts in various societies. The category of criticism is understood by me in a broad sense which enables one to accept utopian thinking and an evaluating attitude. In my research I deal with the issue of defining what is art/poetry in the context of modernday knowledge about the interpretative character of critical activities; I put forward a hypothesis that at the present moment, arguments and contentions between researchers, critics and commentators concern the very possibility of interpretation. I also opt out for perceiving positive consequences of critical work.

    The topic of considerations is the language communication culture of varied official texts. The author evaluates the level of linguistic competence of the authors of ministerial documents published on the Web pages of those institutions. She also reports on the attitudes of the senders and addressees of official texts forming the subject of discussion of the First Congress of the Official Language (Pol. I Kongres Języka Urzędowego). She contends, drawing on her personal experiences, that translators engaging in the translation of EU texts into Polish demonstrate utmost care for wording and communicability of official documents. Moreover, translators are held up as a model of care for high level of culture of office communication.

    The article is a review of Dorota Brzozowska’s study Chińskie ślady w polskich dyskursach współczesnych (Chinese traces in Polish contemporary discourses). The in-depth analysis of the monograph attracts the reader’s attention to the wealth of the collected material and the multitude of viewpoints, but also points out certain inconsistencies the author failed to avoid which in turn led her to fall into the trap of excessive simplification and orientalisation of China.

    This article concerns uncertainty, which is considered by many social theorists (for instance, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Daniel Bell, Eric Hobsbawm) to be a characteristic trait of the contemporary world. Uncertainty is produced by rapid, multidimensional changes in the conditions around us—by their instability and unpredictability—and by a lack of future vision. Continual change becomes an element of everyday life. Culture understood as a collection of permanent meanings, norms, and values loses its ordering function—it no longer serves to elucidate the world; the past does not provide helpful examples. There is an expansion of mutability, a multiplicity of possible choices, and an excess of information—which paradoxically, like its lack in an isolated society, is a cause of uncertainty, fear, and presentist thinking. In Polish society, these phenomena are strengthened by tradition and the sense of economic insecurity accompanying the systemic transformation.

    This article takes a look at contemporary Polish prose dealing with theme of the Shoah. “Contemporary”, in this case, means fiction published in the 1990s and after the year 2000, thus already in the twenty-first century. It therefore comprises the last twenty-five years. The fundamental categories used here in the analyses of texts, are the memory and post-memory of the Shoah. The authors who have published works over the last twenty five years have either been witnesses of these events (i.e. Children of the Holocaust), or – more often – representatives of the second or third generation after the Shoah. In this article, contemporary Polish fiction will be exemplified by the prose of Marek Bieńczyk, Piotr Szewc, Igor Ostachowicz, Mariusz Sieniewicz and Piotr Paziński. Analysis contains four categories which structure both the world represented and the form of the prose: transgression, pop-culture, history and metonymy.

    The paper presents the results of the analysis of about a hundred Polish books for younger children (3–10 year-olds) written in the 21st century. During the research special attention was paid to the depiction of children’s play in the analysed literature. The author compared the character of play in Polish children’s classics (M. Konopnicka, M. Kownacka, Cz. Janczarski) with recent stories and novels (written by G. Kasdepke, R. Jędrzejewska-Wróbel, R. Witek, A. Tyszka and others). Some sociological research is referenced in order to assess whether writers present actual situations of play (diagnostic) or try to influence play by giving advice on how to play and what to play (prescriptive). The main conclusions of the research are: in contemporary literature for young readers, children’s play is not presented as often as it was in the previous century; children characters need adults’ help, advice or company to play, they rarely play outside with their friends without adult supervision. Instead, children’s play now often takes place in cyberspace and kids become addicted to their computers and other electronic devices; children are often bored and expect help in finding interesting and involving forms of play.

    The author presents the socio-cultural framework of the process of formulating and implementing public policies/activities (including their analysis and evaluation). He gives grounds for the idea that socio-cultural factors have a deciding influence on the present low level of effectiveness of public activities/policies in Poland (although structural and economic factors also have an impact). Reference to the phenomenon of a ‘sociological vacuum’ and its consequences (such as minute interest in public issues, and lack of responsibility for public activities and for meeting the needs of others) is important in the analysis. The author points to the historical origins of the phenomenon and refers to earlier studies. He claims this vacuum is responsible for the clumsiness characterizing present attempts to deal with various collective problems—particularly the more complicated ones, whose resolution would require considerable social capital, analytical capacity, and the connection of social and economic resources. In his opinion, public politics in Poland could remain for a long time in its present shape—characterized by the creation of legal regulations without much use of analytics, and by unilateral actions of the political class and the strongest interest groups.

    The aim of the article is an attempt to show what role social media can play in shaping the reading culture of contemporary teenagers. This problem will be discussed on the example of selected social networks which may be a significant tool in the literacy and cultural education of students. Research conducted both in our country and in the world, as well as my observations made as a Polish language teacher indicate the growing popularity of online social networks in the lives of young people. This is the basis for formulating some – I think  interesting – reflections and educational conclusions. These include, among other things, the justification for the use of the potential of the media in the process of developing the reading skills of contemporary teenagers.
    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie roli mediów społecznościowych w kształtowaniu kultury czytelniczej współczesnych nastolatków. Problem ten został omówiony na przykładzie wybranych portali społecznościowych, które – co autorka uzasadniła i poparła przykładami – mogą być znaczącym narzędziem w edukacji kulturowo-literackiej uczniów. Badania prowadzone zarówno w naszym kraju, jak i na świecie, a także obserwacje autorki poczynione z pozycji szkolnego polonisty wskazują na rosnącą popularność internetowych mediów w życiu przede wszystkim młodych ludzi. Stanowiło to podstawę do sformułowania kilku refleksji i wniosków edukacyjnych. Dotyczą one między innymi zasadności wykorzystania potencjału mediów w procesie kształcenia kompetencji lekturowych współczesnych nastolatków.

    Witold Jedlicki (1929–1995), an important, if somewhat disregarded Polish sociologist, began work at the University of Warsaw as the first assistant of professor Stanislaw Ossowski, member of Ossowski’s circle, also known as the Warsaw School of Sociology. Little, however, is known of Jedlicki’s life after he emigrated to Israel in 1962; in present day Poland he is remembered mainly as the author of a single text Chamy i Żydy published in 1962 in Kultura [Culture], a leading Polish emigré journal appearing in Paris. Through research of Polish and Israeli archives, study of publications in political and academic institutional history as well as interviews with Jedlicki’s brother Jerzy and Chanan Rapaport, at that time head of the National Institute for Research in the Behavioral Sciences the author was able to partly reconstruct his career abroad in Israel and the US, including contributions to Kultura and later criticism of the political situation in Poland and Israel. Conversations with Jedlicki’s friends and acquaintances, his own texts (published and unpublished), and particularly his correspondence with Jerzy Giedroyc, editor in chief of Kultura provide a new psychological insight into the intellectual history of a scholar still quoted by the Polish school of sociology in discussions and interpretations of Polish society.

    This article is built on the premise that the topos has become a potent unit of cultural memory, an image that stores a wealth of often vague, buried or forgotten ideas. Its contents, like those of literature, tend to become extraordinarily condensed and confl ated; in consequence, some topoi (in particular the Holocaust topos) defy conventional tools of understanding and analysis. A solution to this problem can be found in an approach which broadens the scope of the sources of the Holocaust to include pop culture; gives up the rigid classifi cation of topoi, based on ‘hard’, documentary evidence; and, draws on a conceptual frame that connects the topos with the mechanisms of remembrance. A practical application of this approach is offered here in a series of readings of selected passages from Marcin Pilis’s novel The Meadow of the Dead (Łąka umarłych), Zygmunt Miłoszewski’s crime story A Grain of Truth (Ziarno prawdy), Marcin Wolski’s alternate history novel Wallenrod, Justyna Wydra’s war romance The SS-man and a Jewess (Esesman i Żydówka), Krzysztof Zajas’s thriller Oszpicyn [local Yiddish: Auschwitz] as well as some poems by Jacek Podsiadło from his volume The Breguet Overcoil (Włos Bregueta).

    Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest komparatystycznej analizie dwóch współczesnych powieści: Entfernung. austriackiej pisarki Marlene Streeruwitz i Na krótko polskiej autorki Ingi Iwasiów. Refleksją łączącą obie powieści jest diagnoza kondycji współczesnej kobiecości w powiązaniu z aktualnymi przemianami społecznymi i kulturowymi. W świecie coraz dynamiczniejszej technologizacji, digitalizacji, biurokratyzacji i wzrastającego znaczenia praktycznej fachowości kwalifikacje kształcone przez humanistykę, takie jak wrażliwość moralna i estetyczna, zdolność przenikliwej interpretacji i wartościującej oceny rzeczywistości, boleśnie tracą na znaczeniu. Kobiety, które dzięki prawom osiągniętym przez ruchy emancypacyjne XX wieku uzyskały wolny dostęp do świata kultury i życia uniwersyteckiego, stają obecnie w obliczu kryzysu tych sfer, co zmusza je do nowego samookreślenia.
    This paper is a comparative analysis of two contemporary novels—by the Polish author Inga Iwasiów Na krótko and the Austrian writer Marlene Streeruwitz Enfernung. A reflection that both novels have in common is a diagnosis of the condition of contemporary womanhood in relation to current social and cultural transformation. In the world of more and more dynamic technologisation, digitalisation, bureaucratisation and increasing significance of practical specialist knowledge, qualifications encouraged by humanities, such as moral and aesthetic sensitivity, ability to perceptively interpret and evaluate the reality, become considerably less important. As a result of the rights achieved in the course of the 20th century emancipation movement women gained free access to culture and universities. Nowadays, they face a crisis of the above mentioned areas, which forces them to redefine themselves.
    Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der vergleichenden Analyse von zwei zeitgenössischen Romanen: der österreichischen Autorin Marlene Streeruwitz Entfernung. und der polnischen Schriftstellerin Inga Iwasiów Na krótko. Die Grundlage für die komparatistische Herangehensweise bildet die in beiden Prosatexten zentrale Diagnose über die Kondition der Weiblichkeit in Querverbindung mit der durch soziale Prozesse herbeigeführten Krise der Kultur. Der im Zuge der Emanzipationsprozesse des 20. Jahrhunderts durchgesetzte Andrang der Frauen in die akademische Humanistik sowie in zahlreiche Kunstbereiche erweist sich gegenwärtig als Sackgasse. Humanistik wird zusehends konkurrenzunfähig und verliert schmerzhaft an Bedeutung im Vergleich zu anderen, Profit sichernden Fachrichtungen. Viele Bereiche der Kunst wie etwa der Theaterbetrieb, von dem Streeruwitz’ Roman handelt, geraten in Abhängigkeit von Geld stiftenden Machthabern, werden gefährlich kommerzialisiert und verlieren ihren kritischen Impetus. Die darin involvierten Frauen werden demonstrativ aus Finanz- und Machtbereichen der „flüchtigen Moderne“ (Z. Bauman) ausgespart und bleiben gleichermaßen beruflich wie privat auf der Strecke.

    The article is a reflection on the symbols through which the modern experience of cultural belonging is expressed and on the motivations behind their contestation. Examples of selected themes that Marcin Świetlicki and Barbara Gruszka-Zych explore in their writing are used to examine the poetic quest to overcome feelings of alienation in one’s own cultural milieu. In spite of the differences between the two poets, both address the problems facing the contemporary consciousness of Western man, split between the desire to complete the process of deconstructing his own universal “identifying signs” and the need to creatively explore the process of symbolization itself. The issue of “internal acculturation,” as a particular case within the topic of acculturation as a whole, is also correlated to examples drawn from Francophone poetry.

    Opis:
    The article presents the state of research and prospects for further development of Polish cultural studies towards the end of the 2010s. Occasionally accused of being stagnant or non-specific, the discipline is analyzed through the category of vitality. By applying it, the author attempts to provide a synthetic reconstruction of the panorama of Polish cultural studies. It is not only dense and diverse, but it also seems to have a guaranteed future. Polish cultural studies defends itself in the social field of relations in which contemporary researchers operate.

    Opis:
    The article is an attempt to situate the world of peculiar creatures created in the ballads of Bolesław Leśmian with other bestiaries drawn from mythology and literary creations in the field of science fiction, fairy tales and grotesque, creativity for children and popular culture, by, for instance, Jorge Luis Borges, Stanisław Lem, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Maciej Wojtyszko. Against this background, the distinctiveness of Leśmian’s imagination makes us call it a fantastic ontology and references to the category of “other-beings”. Leśmian creates his characters in an anti-anthropocentric perspective as an alternative existence. Their appearance remains undetermined as the residual characteristics dispersed in the narrative focus primarily on their existence marginalized with regard to the real world. An overviewof the most important Leśmian creatures closes with a detailed interpretation of the ballad Znikomek from the collection Napój cienisty (Shadowy Drink).
    Artykuł jest próbą usytuowania świata osobliwych stworów kreowanych w balladach Bolesława Leśmiana wobec innych bestiariuszy wywiedzionych z mitologii oraz literackich kreacji w zakresie: science fiction, baśni i groteski, twórczości dla dzieci i kultury popularnej, m.in. Jorge Luisa Borgesa, Stanisława Lema, Konstantego Ildefonsa Gałczyńskiego, Macieja Wojtyszki. Na tym tle odrębność wyobraźni Leśmiana skłania do nazwania jej ontologią fantastyczną i odniesienia do kategorii „innobytu”. Leśmian kreuje swe postaci w perspektywie anty-antropocentrycznej – jako istnienia alternatywne. Ich wyglądy pozostają niedookreślone, gdyż szczątkowe charakterystyki rozpraszone w narracji skupiają się przede wszystkim na ich marginalizowanej wobec świata realnego egzystencji. Przegląd ważniejszych Leśmianowskich stworów zamyka szczegółowa interpretacja ballady Znikomek ze zbioru Napój cienisty.
