    The thesis will focus on analysing what “ The Life Of Jesus” is about and how this is portrayed through the main character, Freddy. It will discuss the concept of the filmie character as a “common human being”, who does not have access to intellectual reflection and verbal articulation of emotional conflict and crisis, but who, at the same time, is capable of feeling a great deal. He feels the emotional conflict and crisis that make up the story. I will also attempt to step inside the same filmic character itself and analyse how to visualize the morals, ethics and emotions that the character cant verbalize or communicate in any direct or intellectual way. Bruno Dumont speaks about filming the inside of a person as his highest dream. I will discuss film directing using The Life Of Jesus as an example, but I will also draw on my own experiences as a filmmaker.

    The paper presents Bruno Dumont’s vision of Flanders. A French director from Bailleul makes no comments on today’s situation of the region, nor does he directly speak of its history. However, he uses its landscape in many different ways in the process of constructing his tales of contemporary post-secular world. In such films as The Life of Jesus, Humanity and Flanders, as well as in TV series L’il Quinquin and Coincoin and the Extra-Humans, locality and topography of Flanders play the role of a microcosmos in which problems observed in the macro scale may be clearly seen.
    Artykuł dotyczy obrazu Flandrii zawartego w filmach Bruno Dumonta. Pochodzący z Bailleul francuski reżyser nie komentuje aktualnej sytuacji regionu ani nie odwołuje się wprost do jego historii, na różne sposoby wykorzystuje jednak flandryjski pejzaż do konstruowania opowieści o współczesnym postsekularnym świecie. W filmach takich jak Życie Jezusa, Ludzkość czy Flandria, tak samo jak w serialach Mały Quinquin oraz Coincoin i Nieludzie, flandryjska lokalność i topografia funkcjonują jako mikrokosmos, w którym uwidaczniają się problemy obserwowane w skali makro.

Bruno Dumont jako jeden z najciekawszych francuskich twórców nawiązuje w swoim filmie do tradycji reprezentowanej przez Roberta Bressona. Bohaterka filmu, współczesna dziewczyna zafascynowana postacią średniowiecznej mistyczki Hadewijch, przeżywa swoją religijność w świecie całkowicie wyjałowionym z jakiegokolwiek metafizycznego kontekstu. Jej osamotnienie prowadzi ją do środowiska islamskich terrorystów. Wieloznaczny obraz Dumonta prowokuje wiele pytań i choć nie podsuwa jednoznacznej odpowiedzi, to przenikliwie diagnozuje pewne elementy kondycji współczesnej zachodniej Europy.
    The article focuses on Hadewijch, a film by the French director Bruno Dumont. The film is discussed from the perspective of the contemporary religious experience. Bruno Dumont, one of the most interesting French directors, refers in his movie to the tradition of Robert Bresson. The protagonist of Hadewijch, a contemporary girl fascinated by the medieval mystic Hadewijch, experiences her religiousness in a world completely devoid of any metaphysical context. Her loneliness draws her near the circles of Islamic terrorists. Dumont’s ambiguous movie poses numerous questions and while it does not offer an unequivocal answer to any of them, it succeeds in providing a painful diagnosis of the condition of contemporary Western Europe.

    Dwa obrazy z filmów Twentynine Palms i Ludzkość Brunona Dumonta służą w artykule ukazaniu strategii, jakich kino francuskiego ekstremizmu używa, aby negocjować pornograficzność dosłownych obrazów ciała doznających rozkoszy lub – przeciwnie – bólu. Odczytanie ich w kontekście zmysłowej teorii filmu demonstruje, jak w sploty między tym, co prawdziwe i sztuczne w kinie, jest wikłany ucieleśniony widz, często zmuszony do zajęcia niewygodnej pozycji patrzącego na obrazy domagające się odwrócenia wzroku. Ataki przypuszczane na widza zostają zinterpretowane jako strategia uwidaczniająca kulturowe praktyki związane z patrzeniem, a także obchodzeniem się z obrazami – zwłaszcza tymi, z którymi widz wchodzi w szczególnie bliską, zmysłową relację
    Two images from Twentynine Palms and Humanite by Bruno Dumont are used in the article to show the strategies that the cinema of French extremism uses to negotiate the pornography of literal images of bodies experiencing pleasure or, on the contrary, pain. Reading them in the context of the sensual theory of film demonstrates how in the tangle between what is real and artificial in the cinema, the embodied viewer is entangled, and often forced to take an uncomfortable position looking at the images that demand that one looks the other away. Attacks on the viewer are interpreted as a strategy that exposes cultural practices related to looking, as well as the handling of images - especially those with which viewers enter into a particularly close, sensual relationship.

    This article undertakes the issue of defining film phenomena which put forward questions of a primary religious nature (about the meaning of life, source of evil, life after death, the existence of Absolute, etc.) in a way that is independent from major religious traditions. The author posits that describing this phenomenon in the case of European film culture is done best by employing the philosophical thought of postsecularism. Utilizing Mieke Bal’s method of cultural analysis, the author takes as an example the term “sacrifice” to point to the existence of different models by which religious topics are undertaken by the cinema. This leads to a preliminary typology of the phenomenon which differentiates between ‘apologetic’ and ‘critical’ films and, furthermore, between films that refer to particular religious traditions and those expressing a postsecular perspective.
