The aim of the article is to analyze the concept of a natural monument as a category that may be useful in non-anthropocentric humanities. A theory of nature conservation based on this concept is discussed as an approach that undermines the culture – nature dichotomy by claiming that a “culture of nature” should be developed. The idea of a natural monument makes it also possible to offer an interpretation of the natural environment that may withstand standard views of nature as an economic resource, tourist attraction or a sphere which humans should not interfere with. The ideas of certain Polish pioneers of ecology are also shortly discussed.

Puszcza Bukowa pod Szczecinem stanowi niezwykle cenny pod względem przyrodniczym i historycznym obszar, na którym w roku 1991 ustanowiono Szczeciński Park Krajobrazowy „Puszcza Bukowa”. Na jego terenie i w otulinie można spotkać sędziwe okazy drzew, które ze względu na swoje rozmiary, a niekiedy także okoliczności posadzenia, stanowią istotny element dziedzictwa przyrodniczego i historycznego tego terenu. W latach 2017–2018 przebadano dwanaście historycznych drzew – osiem egzemplarzy dębu szypułkowego (Quercus robur) oraz po jednym: lipy drobnolistnej (Tilia cordata), holenderskiej (T. ×europaea), szerokolistnej (T. platyphyllos) i cisa pospolitego (Taxus baccata). Przeprowadzono szczegółową analizę źródeł historycznych zawierających informacje o badanych drzewach, opisano ich parametry dendrologiczne oraz oceniono stan zdrowotny według skal stosowanych we współczesnej dendrologii. Najgrubszym okazem z badanych drzew była lipa szerokolistna nazywana Lipą św. Ottona, o obwodzie 875 cm. Stan zdrowotny większości drzew był zadowalający pomimo dużej konkurencji w drzewostanach leśnych. Poza dwoma przypadkami w pobliżu drzew nie stwierdzono tablic informacyjnych, które przedstawiałyby walory historyczne i przyrodnicze okazów.
The Beech Forest near Szczecin is an extremely valuable area in terms of nature and history, where in 1991 the Szczecin Landscape Park ‘Puszcza Bukowa’ was established. In the park and a separate protection area around it, you can find old specimens of trees, which due to their size and sometimes the circumstances of planting are an important element of the natural and historical heritage of this area. In 2017–2018, twelve historic trees were examined: eight specimens of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), one small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata), one common lime (T. ×europaea), one large-leaved lime (T. platyphyllos) and one common yew (Taxus baccata). A detailed analysis of historical sources containing information about the examined trees, their dendrological parameters and health status according to scales used in modern dendrology was carried out. The thickest specimen among the examined trees was the large-leaved lime called the Linden of St. Otton, the circumference of which was 875 cm. The health condition of most trees was satisfactory despite the high competition in forest stands. With the exception of two specimens, in the vicinity of the trees, there were no information boards showing the historical and natural values of the specimens being the subject of the research.

Opis:
The history of the protection of the special qualities of trees is almost as old as humanity itself. The protection of trees was mainly associated with a kind of sacrum, which surrounded old and large trees. There are plenty of reasons why old trees are protected, but their popularity as tourist attractions varies widely. This study was an attempt at determin-ing the attractiveness of monumental trees as monuments and a part of the cultural landscape. The analysis was conducted on sites with monumental trees in six regions: Siedlce, Mińsk Mazowiecki, Biała Podlaska, Repki, Czeremcha, and Mrozy, as well as the towns: Siedlce, Biała Podlaska and Minsk Mazowiecki. Most of the monumental trees were found in alley systems and historical parks, formerly belonging to manors and palaces. Only a few were found in the fields. In addition to the trees of native origin were introduced species, imported specially for cultivation in gardens and parks. Among these, the most numerous were specimens of small-leaved lime. English oak was somewhat less frequent.

Currently in Poland there are 36,570 natural monuments (registry items). 94% of them are trees, growing as individual specimens (28,304 natural monuments), in groups (5,551) and in alleys (525). In total, this gives a number of at least 123,784 monumental trees. All of them now have the same status of a ‘natural monument’. Meanwhile, among this huge number of trees there are both average specimens (as for natural monuments) and endowed with special natural and historical as well as social values. The aim of this work was to propose detailed solutions for the categorization of trees as natural monuments by indicating the two new forms of protection for the Polish legislation: the National Natural Monument (a form superior to the existing natural monument) and the European Natural Monument (a form superior to the National Natural Monument and natural monument). The status of the European Natural Monument would receive exceptional trees, not only for the country, but also internationally. The proposed target number of such facilities in Poland could be from 100 to 200. On the other hand, the status of the National Natural Monument would receive trees significantly distinguishable on the scale of the country or region, compared to other natural monuments, nevertheless giving way to natural, historical and social values included in the European Natural Monument category. The estimated target number of such individuals in Poland could be from 1000 to 2000. Dimensional criteria in the form of minimum circumferences of their trunks were determined for 45 species. The age and unusual shape were indicated as additional factors necessary to take into account during assessing the natural values of trees. There are also a number of criteria, that should be taken into account during assessing historical and social values of monumental trees, such as: the existing connections with historical facts and figures, as well as the legends. A group of trees was designated for the new protection forms in the number of 1905 candidates for the National Natural Monument and 183 candidates for the European Natural Monument. Finally patterns of tables to mark them and legislative solutions for defining and setting up the National Natural Monument and the European Natural Monument were proposed.

In 2009 the Ministry of Environment has granted the commission of preparing the "Catalogue of geotourist sites" to the working group from the AGH-University of Science and Technology. The "Catalogue…" will include the geosites located in the areas of natural monuments and abiotic nature reserves. The interesting geological structure of Poland is a result of a variety of processes which created numerous geological objects. Many of them reveal both the outstanding aesthetic valours and the fascinating geological history, which may attract the visitors. The aesthetic valours, as e.g., monumental or unusual forms and/or unique character will draw attention of all visitors, despite their level of understanding of geological processes. The geological history will probably attract only a fraction of visitors, particularly professionals, including university students, as well as collectioners and other passionates of Earth sciences. Among thousands of abiotic nature reserves and nature monuments 150 top-class sites will be selected, professionally described and photographed. The English version of this unique book will be available, as well. It is expected that the "Catalogue…" will contribute to promotion of geosites in Poland and abroad. The project will be financed by the National Fund for Environment Protection and Water Management.

Dęby szypułkowe Quercus robur L. stanowią w Polsce najokazalsze drzewa, występujące w zasięgu naturalnym. Według różnych źródeł obwód pni najgrubszych drzew mierzony na wysokości pierśnicy przekracza 1000 cm. Dęby przedstawiane były często w literaturze naukowej i popularnonaukowej przede wszystkim ze względu na swoje rozmiary, ale także wartość kulturową i historyczną. Opracowania tego typu najczęściej dotyczyły najbardziej okazałych egzemplarzy tego gatunku w skali kraju. W odniesieniu do Pomorza Zachodniego brak w literaturze naukowej danych dotyczących największych okazów z województwa zachodniopomorskiego, które jest naturalnym miejscem występowania gatunku. Badania przeprowadzone w latach 2017-2018 stanowią próbę usystematyzowania wiedzy w tym zakresie w skali regionu i zostały przeprowadzone na grupie drzew najgrubszych pod względem obwodu pierśnicowego. Analiza objęła szczegółowy opis parametrów dendrologicznych oraz ocenę stanu zdrowotnego według skal stosowanych we współczesnej dendrologii. Uwzględniono również informacje zawarte w źródłach historycznych. Badaniami objęto 12 egzemplarzy dębu szypułkowego Quercus robur L.
Pedunculate oaks of Quercus robur L. are the most magnificent trees in Poland, which occur in their natural range. According to various sources, the circumference of the trunks of the thickest trees measured at breast height may exceed 1000 cm. Oaks of impressive sizes were often presented in the scientific and popular science literature primarily due to their size, but also cultural and historical value. Studies of this type most often referred to the most impressive specimen of this species on the national scale. In reference to Western Pomerania, there is no scientific study on the largest specimen in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, which is a natural occurrence of this species. Research carried out in 2017-2018 is an attempt to systematize knowledge in this area on the regional scale and has been carried out on a group of trees that are the most impressive in terms of the circumference measured at breast height. The analysis included a detailed description of dendrological parameters and an assessment of the health status according to the scales used in modern dendrology. Information from historical sources was also included. The study covered 12 copies of pedunculate oak Quercus robur L.

W Karpatach polskich na obszarze płaszczowiny śląskiej zinwentaryzowano i wykonano badania fizykochemiczne wód, opracowano projekty ochrony i objęto prawną ochroną, jako pomniki przyrody nieożywionej, trzy źródła wyprowadzające wody siarczkowe. Źródła „Bogumiła” w Komborni i „Bartłomiej” w Woli Komborskiej są położone na obszarze Czarnorzecko-Strzyżowskiego Parku Krajobrazowego. Woda ze źródła „Bogumiła” jest typu HCO3–Ca–Mg+H2S, jest to akratopega o mineralizacji 0,6 g/dm3 przy zawartości H2S 4,6 mg/dm3. Woda ze źródła „Bartłomiej” jest typu HCO3–Ca–Na+H2S i jest to woda zwykła o mineralizacji 0,3 g/ dm3 i zawartości H2S 3 mg/dm3. Źródło „Nad Wodospadem” jest położone w Sanoku-Olchowcach na obszarze Parku Krajobrazowego Gór Słonnych. Wypływajaca woda to akratopega typu HCO3–Cl–Ca–Na+H2S o mineralizacji 0,7 g/dm3 i zawartości H2S 3,8 mg/dm3. Objęte ochroną źródła mają aspekty naukowe, dydaktyczne i turystyczne. Jako pomniki przyrody nieożywionej powiększyły liczbę elementów chronionych na obszarze wymienionych parków, przez co wzrosła ich atrakcyjność.
A detailed study of three sulphurous springs and physico–chemical investigations of their waters were carried out within the Silesian Nappe of the Polish Carpathians. A project of protecting the springs as monuments of inanimate nature has been prepared and approved. Two of the sulphurous springs, the „Bogumiła” in Kombornia and the „Bartłomiej” in Wola Komborska, are located within the Czarnorzeki-Strzyżów Landscape Park. The water of the „Bogumiła” spring is of the HCO3–Ca–Mg+H2S geochemical type and represents an acratopega with the TDS value 0.6 g/dm3 and the H2S content 4.6 mg/dm3. The water of the „Bartłomiej” spring is of the HCO3–Ca– Na+H2S type; it is a fresh water with the TDS content 0.3 g/dm3 and the H2S content 3 mg/dm3. The third spring, called „Nad Wodospadem”, is located in Sanok-Olchowce within the Słonne Mountains Landscape Park. The spring provides an acratopega of the HCO3– Cl–Ca–Na+H2S type with the TDS content 0.7 g/dm3 and the H2S content 3.8 mg/dm3. Having been covered by legal protection, the three springs extend the number of such elements within the areas of both parks, thereby increasing their touristic attraction

Rzeka Prosna o długości 216,8 km należy do największych w południowej Wielkopolsce. Prosna po części swojej długości służyła jako drogowskaz „Szlaku Bursztynowego” dla kupców rzymskich. Rzeka stanowi pomnik przyrody i była świadkiem wydarzeń historycz-nych. Na 70 km rzeki Prosny w Bolesławcu znajdują się ruiny zamku z czasów piastowskich. Dolina Prosny w okresie wczesnego średniowiecza była terenem osadnictwa z okresu ple-miennego i intensywnego zasiedlania w czasie monarchii pierwszych Piastów. Badania archeologiczne datują początek kaliskiego grodu na Zawodziu na przełomie IX i X w. Od XIV w. do końca XVIII w. w Kaliszu znajdował się zamek królewski, spełniający m.in. funkcje rezydencji władców i starosty generalnego Wielkopolski. Rzeka Prosna w Kaliszu i regionie była świadkiem bitew a mianowicie: pomiędzy stronnikami króla Augusta II Mocnego z królem Stanisławem Leszczyńskim (29.10.1706r.), w czasie konfederacji barskiej (1768r., 1770r.), pomiędzy wojskami napoleońskimi a rosyjskimi (13.02.1813r.), powstańców styczniowych 1863r. (Kuźnica Grabowska 26.02.1863r.). Była również świadkiem zniszczenia Kalisza przez oddziały pruskie (1914r.). W pobliskim Szczypiornie w 1917r. zostali osadzeni legioniści J. Piłsudskiego. Rzeka Prosna była także świadkiem mordów dokonanych na Polakach przez Niemców w czasie II Wojny Światowej.
The Prosna river of 216.8 km in length is one of the longest in the Southern Wielkopolska. In its part the Prosna was used as a signpost of the “Amber Route” for Roman merchants. The river is a monument of nature and has been a witness of historic events. At its 70th kilometre in Boesławiec it passes ruins of a Piast castle. The Prosna valley during the early Middle Ages was an area of settlements of tribes during the reign of the first Piast dynasty rulers. Archaeological research dates the beginning of the Kalisz city in Zawodzie at the turn of 9th and 10th centruries. Between 14th and the end of 18th century Kalisz had a royal castle which was a residence of Wielkopolska rulers and its general administrator. The Prosna in Kalisz and its surrounding region witnessed battles, namely between supporters if August II Strong and king Stanislaw Leszczynski (29.10.1706), during the Bar Confederation (1768, 1770), between Napoleon and Russian troops, January insurrection in 1863 (Kuźnica Grabowska 26.02.1863). It also witnessed destruction if Kalisz by Prussian troops (1914). In the nearby Szczypiorno in 1917 J. Pilsudski’s legions were imprisoned. The Prosna could also see Poles murdered by the Germans during World War Two.

W artykule zostały przedstawione wyniki ogólnej inwentaryzacji przyrodniczej i opisane zagrożenia antropogeniczne i przyrodnicze dla 53 istniejących pomników przyrody ożywionej na terenie Zielonej Góry. Stwierdzono nieliczne występowanie zagrożeń przyrodniczych, a największym zagrożeniem antopogenicznym wobec wybranych drzew jest spływ soli technicznej zimą i wiosną. Ogólną kondycję badanych pomników przyrody oceniono jako dobrą lub bardzo dobrą. Stare drzewa, w tym egzemplarze pomnikowe – oprócz swojej ogromnej wartości przyrodniczej – pozytywnie wpływają na odbiór danego miejsca, dlatego nasze badania pozwolą na aktualizację danych zawartych w rejestrach oraz na badania porównawcze w przyszłości.
The article presents current measurements of girth and assesment of natural and anthropogenic threats towards 53 natural monuments in Zielona Gora. The authors indicated few natural threats. The impact of road salt on several monuments during winter and spring was considered the most serious anthropogenic threat. To sum up, the condition of studied natural monuments is good or excellent. Old trees, including monuments, have a positive influence on the perception of the place where they grow. Therefore, the article allows the data to be updated and makes further comparative studies possible.

Celem badań była identyfikacja problemów funkcjonowania lokalnych form ochrony przyrody na obszarach miast, a także wskazanie negatywnych skutków jakie wynikają z ich obiektowego traktowania. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że lokalne formy ochrony przyrody zajmują nierzadko znaczną powierzchnię. Średnia powierzchnia użytków ekologicznych w badanych miastach wynosi ponad dwadzieścia hektarów, największy zespół przyrodniczo-krajobrazowy pod względem powierzchni spełnia kryterium stawiane parkom narodowym. Analiza uwarunkowań formalnoprawnych ujawniła, że lokalne formy ochrony przyrody nie mają odpowiednich instrumentów zarządzania. Nie wyznacza się wokół nich otulin, nie ma obowiązku określania ochrony czynnej, a także sporządzania planów miejscowych. Skutkiem tego nie są one właściwie chronione przed zagrożeniami zewnętrznymi, a także nie są przystosowane do pełnienia funkcji społecznej.
The aim of the research was to identify problems of local nature protected areas functioning in urban areas, as well as to indicate the negative effects that result from object-oriented treatment of them. The conducted research revealed, that the nature conservation areas at a local level often occupy a significant area. The average area of ecological site in surveyed cities exceed twenty hectares and the largest nature-landscape complex in terms of area meets the criteria for national parks. The analysis of formal and legal conditions have shown that local nature protection areas do not have appropriate management instruments. There is no obligation to create buffer zones around them, or specify active protection, as well as to draw up local land use plans. As a result, they are not properly protected from external threats and are not adapted to perform a social function.

Artykuł porusza tematykę alternatywnego podejścia do budowy ścieżek rowerowych w przestrzeni miejskiej. Tradycyjne rozwiązanie zakłada wykorzystanie betonu, asfaltu, kostki brukowej i innych materiałów, których specyfika, a także sposób wbudowywania przyczyniają się do uszkodzeń korzeni drzew, często powodują obumieranie drzew. Najbardziej istotnym czynnikiem, niestety wielokrotnie zaniedbywanym, jest destruktywny wpływ na otaczającą zieleń, w szczególności na korzenie drzew i krzewów, które często są cięte lub całkowicie usuwane w czasie korytowania ścieżki rowerowej. Problem ten nabiera jeszcze większego znaczenia w kontekście obszaru opracowania jakim jest pomnik przyrody „Aleja Drzew” zlokalizowany przy ulicy Żwirki i Wigury w Warszawie. Zastosowanie alternatywnej, podwieszanej konstrukcji drogi dla rowerów może skutecznie chronić korzenie drzew nie ingerując w ich strukturę, a ponadto nie pociąga za sobą wyższych kosztów z tytułu wykonania i eksploatacji.
This paper discusses the subject of an alternative approach to designing bicycle paths in urban space. The traditional solution involves the use of concrete, asphalt, paving stone and other materials, the specificity of which, as well as the method of construction, contribute to damage to tree roots, often causing the death of trees. The most important factor, unfortunately neglected many times, is the destructive impact on the surrounding greenery, in particular on the roots of trees and shrubs, which are often cut or removed during the construction of the bicycle paths. This problem becomes even more important in the context of the area of study which is the “Avenue of Trees” natural monument located at Żwirki i Wigury street in Warsaw. The use of an alternative, suspended pavement construction for bicycles can effectively protect tree roots without damage, and also does not entail higher costs for construction and maintenance.

Opis:
The most beautiful Polish mofette occurs in the Sądecki (Sącz) Beskid, within the Krynica tectonic-facial zone of the Magura Unit (Inner Carpathians). It is located in the Złocki Stream upstream of the Złockie village in the Muszyna commune. The occurrence has numerous exhalations of CO2 in the valley floor and on the sides of this boggy stream as well as in the „Zatopione” and „Bulgotka” springs. It is also the site of the dry exhalation „Dychawka”. The floor of the valley is covered with gelatinous rusty-brown deposits of iron oxyhydroxides that precipitate either due to chemical or organic processes (the latter initiated by numerous microorganisms, mainly ferruginous bacteria). The site is legally protected as the Professor Henryk Świdziński monument of inanimate nature. In September 2005 it was made accessible for tourists and currently is an important geological attraction in the Popradzki Landscape Park.
