Opis:
Brontomerus mcintoshi is a new genus and species of sauropod dinosaur from the Hotel Mesa Quarry in Grand County, Utah, USA, in the upper part of the Ruby Ranch Member (Aptian–Albian) of the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation. It is known from at least two fragmentary specimens of different sizes. The type specimen is OMNH 66430, the left ilium of a juvenile individual; tentatively referred specimens include a crushed presacral centrum, a complete and well−preserved mid−to−posterior caudal vertebra, the partial centrum of a distal caudal vertebra, a complete pneumatic anterior dorsal rib from the right side, the nearly complete left scapula of a much larger, presumably adult, individual, and two partial sternal plates. Brontomerus is diagnosed by five autapomorphies of the type specimen: preacetabular lobe 55% of total ilium length, longer than in any other sauropod; preacetabular lobe directed anterolaterally at 30 to the sagittal, but straight in dorsal view and vertically oriented; postacetabular lobe reduced to near absence; ischiadic peduncle reduced to very low bulge; ilium proportionally taller than in any other sauropod, 52% as high as long. In a phylogenetic analysis, Brontomerus was recovered as a camarasauromorph in all most parsimonious trees, but with uncertain position within that clade. The large preacetabular lobe of the ilium anchored powerful protractor and abductor muscles, but precise interpretation is impossible without functionally related elements such as femora and proximal caudal vertebrae. Brontomerus is the eighth sauropod genus named from the Early Cretaceous of North America, and more remain to be described: North American sauropod diversity did not decline catastrophically at the end of the Jurassic as often assumed. The most striking differences between Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous sauropod faunas in North America is that the former are abundant and dominated by diplodocids, whereas the latter are comparatively scarce— though still diverse—and dominated by macronarians.

Opis:
The neck posture of sauropod dinosaurs has long been controversial. Recent reconstructions position the cervical vertebrae and skull in an “osteological neutral pose” (ONP), the best fit arrived at by articulating the vertebrae with the zygapophyses in maximum contact. This approach in isolation suggests that most or all sauropods held their necks horizontally. However, a substantial literature on extant amniotes (mammals, turtles, squamates, crocodilians and birds) shows that living animals do not habitually maintain their necks in ONP. Instead, the neck is maximally extended and the head is maximally flexed, so that the mid−cervical region is near vertical. Unless sauropods behaved differently from all extant amniote groups, they must have habitually held their necks extended and their heads flexed. The life orientation of the heads of sauropods has been inferred from the inclination of the semi−circular canals. However, extant animals show wide variation in inclination of the “horizontal” semi−circular canal: the orientation of this structure is not tightly constrained and can give only a general idea of the life posture of extinct animals’ heads.

RETURN IN ORDER TO REMEMBER… ANNA FENBY TAYLOR AND THE ZOFIA KOSSAK FOUNDATION The authors talk with Anna Fenby Taylor, granddaughter of Zofia Kossak-Szatkowska, the Polish writer. Anna Fenby Taylor is one of the initiators of the Zofi a Kossak Foundation in Górki Wielkie. She was born and raised in Britain, where she graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of London. However, for several years she has been a more frequent visitor to Górki Wielkie (Cieszyn Silesia region) rather than to her English home. Her strong will to save the legacy of her grandparents, the life and work of Zofia Kossak, the desire to rebuild from ruins the Kossaks’ eighteenth-century mansion made her decide along with her husband to renovate and hand it over to cultural and tourist needs. Anna Fenby Taylor tells about the history of the place and the stages which had led to the creation of the Culture and Art Center “Dwór Kossaków” (The Kossak Mansion) in this place.

Opis:
In this paper starch gelatinisation in Couette-Taylor flow (CTF) apparatus (equipped with a water heat jacket) has been investigated. CTF (characterised by the presence of Taylor vortices) provides good environment for gelatinisation, e.g. effective mixing, fast heat transfer, positive influence on starch rheological properties. During experiments starch gelatinisation degree and starch swelling has been studied. It was accompanied by temperature measurements performed along the apparatus. Additionally, starch gelatinisation was investigated by computer simulation. A complete starch gelatinisation was obtained for the shortest investigated residence time in the apparatus when the temperature in the heat jacket was above 85 [degrees]C. Nevertheless, it seems that it is still possible to reduce a residence time value, as well as, the value of Thj, but it may require some acceleration of rotor rotation. The swelling degree of gelatinised starch increased with growing values of residence time, rotor rotation and process temperature. Heat transferred could be affected by the structure of the Taylor vortex flow. No significant destruction of starch granules was observed during the treatment in Couette-Taylor flow apparatus. A quite satisfactory agreement between computer simulation and experiments results was achieved.

Opis:
The paper studies the relation between asymptotically developable functions in several complex variables and their extensions as functions of real variables. A new Taylor type formula with integral remainder in several variables is an essential tool. We prove that strongly asymptotically developable functions defined on polysectors have $C^∞$ extensions from any subpolysector; the Gevrey case is included.

Opis:
Triassic microfloras from Antarctica contain abundant lycophyte spores. However, macrofossils of this group of plants are missing, and thus the precise affinities of the spore producers remain unknown. Macrofossil remains of a pleuromeialean lycophyte, including an incomplete strobilus, isolated sporophylls and sporangia, as well as abundant megaspores, occur on a single rock sample from the central Transantarctic Mountains. Also occurring on the same surface is Mesenteriophyllum serratum, a strap−shaped leaf morphotype of uncertain affinity previously known only from the Kyrgyz Republic and the Taimyr Peninsula. The leaves display alternating transverse ridges and depressions that are similar to structures seen in compressed leaves of various isoetalean lycophytes. Leaf morphology and anatomy, together with the close association of the other lycophyte remains, suggest that M. serratum represents a pleuromeialean lycophyte leaf, which was part of the same plant that produced the sporophylls and sporangia. Sedimentological data indicate that this lycophyte inhabited a swampy, probably coal−forming overbank environment, which contrasts with the assumed xeroto halophytic habit of many other pleuromeialean lycophytes.

Modelling, solution, control and even design of many ecological and engineering systems involve dealing with nonlinear partial differential equations of which analytic solutions are rarely available and numerical approach with or without linearization, or approximation is inevitable most of the time. In this paper the possibility of analysing such systems by using a fairly new method known as Differential Taylor (DT) Transform and its advantages are proved. The results obtained by this method are compared with the experimental results and shown to be within good agreement with them. It is emphasised that DT Transform is not effective for only filtration systems, but can also be used equally well for absorption, heat and mass transfer, convective diffusion and similar systems.

Opis:
Work to extend Gurney’s model for fragment velocity to predict blast impulse is ongoing by means of analytical calculations, based on gas and casing dynamics, with comparisons to available experimental data. The issue of early case fracture, with release of explosive gases thus retaining a greater degree of momentum, is also addressed. The method is based on that of G.I. Taylor and can include both case material compressive fow stress and explosive properties such as Chapman-Jouguet pressure. Comparisons between this new Taylor-based theory and blast data from studies of cased charges are shown. The potential effects on blast output of casing dynamic material properties appear considerable. Dynamic testing of case metals is needed to confrm the yield stresses implied by the blast data. It is expected that this method will be useful to the researcher in a number of roles.

The aim of this study was to determine the solubility of CO2 in perfluorodecalin (PFD) which is frequently used as efficient liquid carrier of respiratory gases in bioprocess engineering. The application of perfluorinated liquid in a microsystem has been presented. Gas-liquid mass transfer during Taylor (slug) flow in a microchannel of circular cross section 0.4 mm in diameter has been investigated. A physicochemical system of the absorption of CO2 from the CO2/N2 mixture in perfluorodecalin has been applied. The Henry’s law constants have been found according to two theoretical approaches: physical (H = 1.22x10-3 mol/m3Pa) or chemical (H = 1.26x10-3 mol/m3Pa) absorption. We are hypothesising that the gas-liquid microchannel system is applicable to determine the solubility of respiratory gases in perfluorinated liquids.

Opis:
The initial-boundary value problem of one-dimensional dynamical plastic deformation within the scope of large strain of a metallic cylindrical rod has been analytically solved in a closed form in this paper. The deformation of a flat-ended rod has been caused by its normal impact on a rigid target. The rod material in the deformed part is defined by an incompressible, rigid-plastic, power strain hardening model. Such a model of the material provided better correlation with experimental data than a perfectly-plastic model. Results presented in this paper have applicable values. Derived in the paper closed analytical relations, written by elementary functions, give researchers and engineers insight into interaction of the physical parameters of the rod during of the impact process and post-impact.

Hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and proton free induction decays are measured for Ramalina terebrata thalli rehydrated from gaseous phase. Very tightly, tightly, and loosely bound water fractions are distinguished. Sorption isotherm is sigmoidal in form with the mass of water saturating primary water binding sites equal to Δ m/$m_0$ = 0.046. Proton free induction decays show the presence of immobilized water fraction ($T_{2 L_1}$* ≈ 100 μs) and mobile water pool ($T_{2 L_2}$* ≈ 330 μs). Sorption isotherm fitted to the NMR data shows the absence of water fraction "sealed" in pores of dry thallus.
