Realization of principle company objective – shareholder value maximization – requires maintaining of high growth rates coupled with achieving returns on investments higher than the cost of capital for the company. The condition for high growth and return is a possession by a company of sustainable competitive advantage. In times of “hypercompetition” and growing market uncertainty, the key to success is maintaining strategic flexibility. An option approach to strategy gives a clue about how firms can improve their strategic flexibility in order to effectively respond to volatile environment and gain sustainable competitive advantage. The main source of numerous strategic options for the company are its competences and underlying resources (mostly intangible). Thus the value creation process is a result of pursuing strategy aimed at the identification, development and optimal use of competences as a source of strategic options for the company

Assessing company performance is one of the basic elements of the management function. The traditional view on this topic based solely on financial information is now criticised due to (among other things) the short-term attitude and absence of aspects connected with the company strategy implementation. The assessment of a company performance should reflect changing needs of stakeholders and other bodies connected with the company (customers, suppliers, investors, employees, market regulators, etc.), and enable to manage the reactions of the organisation to the emerging challenges. Knowledge-based economy changed the organisations into information- and knowledge- -depending systems, which requires a specific approach to internal control in such organisations. This in turn affects the way of conducting the internal audit, which should be a support for the Managing Board, external auditors and market regulators. Internal audit plays an active role in the risk management process that is the main factor determining the survival of the company. Article certainly does not exhaust the issue concerning measuring of the added value contributed by the audit and requires further considerations, particularly regarding ways of measuring the effectiveness and employee potential using methods from the scope of human resources management.

In this paper the configuration of the value chains in the automobile and the textile industries building on a theoretical review of the value chain concept, its different typologies and governance models are analised. At the empirical level these chains are classified according to the most relevant participating actors, their interrelations and their methods of upgrading their competitiveness. In both chains a firm-level analysis of their quantitative indicators for competitiveness was carried out. Regarding the automobile industry assemblers generate significant agglomeration economies by attracting international suppliers. The modular production system of the sector generates great flexibility for the manufacturer but it also represents important opportunities for supplier companies aiming to improve their competitive position in these chains. As for the textile industry, our paper shows the clear leadership of the large distribution chains which have radically changed the sector transforming it into an industry driven by the buyers or distributors. Results indicate that the distribution companies are those that have the potential to generate greater added value when these companies have created integrated structures at the end of the chain.

This article attempts to analyze the attitude of family assistants towards the selected principles adopted in the proposed ethical code. The aim of the research was also to diagnose the scope of values which the respondents encountered in the course of their education and which have been selected from the presented proposal. It has been assumed that the values constitute an important tool for persons who provide professional assistance to families, affecting the level of efficiency of the tasks they perform. The research has revealed that respect for other people was the most important element for the respondents. At the same time, most of them encountered this feature in the course of their education. The following principles were also rated highly by the subjects: “treating the clients as partners and experts on their own lives”, “working with the family instead of controlling it” and “listening to people”. It seems that the principles considered the most important by the respondents in their work are also ranked as the most important ones by theoreticians dealing with the professionalization of the family assistants. The study presents only the axiological framework of the family assistance practice which, undoubtedly, requires further in-depth research. The aim of this paper was to draw the attention of the persons involved in family assistance to the issues connected with professionalization of the family assistants and to emphasize that professional ethics is an indispensable part of their work, having a decisive effect on the success of that work.

This paper presents measurement principles which can applied for non-current tangible assets by listed companies using IFRS and discusses how decision of management of an entity may influence its financial position. Apart from analysis of measurement models applicable for property, plant and equipment and investment property and possible impact of use of fair value on presented assets and financial performance, the article presents results of a research relating to level of usage of this measure by companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

This article examines the issues of identity and values in Euromaidan slogans. Different types of identities and the ways of their expression are highlighted: gender, national, regional, social, European and so on. A spectrum of values is portrayed – the values of love, friendship, mutual help, freedom, and dignity. Various linguistic representations of identities and values are examined by using the methodological tools of discourse-analysis on the data obtained from a field research and publications immediately appearing as a reaction to Maidan events.
W artykule przedmiotem badania uczyniono zagadnienia związane z tożsamością i wartościami obecnymi na sloganach w czasie Euromajdanu. Wyodrębnione zostały różne typy tożsamości, a także sposoby, za pomocą których były one wyrażanie, w tym tożsamość: płciowa, narodowa, regionalna, społeczna, europejska, itd. Zaprezentowano także spektrum wartości ważnych dla uczestników tych wydarzeń, w tym wartości miłości, przyjaźni, wzajemnej pomocy, wolności i godności. Różne, wyrażane za pomocą języka, reprezentacje tych tożsamości i wartości zostały przeanalizowane za pomocą narzędzi badawczych typowych dla jakościowej analizy dyskursu. Za materiał badawczy posłużyły slogany towarzyszące wydarzeniom, jakie miały wówczas miejsce na Majdanie.

The purpose of this text is to review and conduct preliminary analysis of visitor evaluations of the museum offer with particular emphasis on their views on exhibitions. This will help identify the needs of the museum guests and make an attempt to determine the mechanisms for constructing a hierarchy of the importance of their expectations regarding museum activities. The term «opinion» in the title has been used as the equivalent of a judgment that is not necessarily substantive not necessarily formulated on the basis of the knowledge of the subject. It is based on strong, first impression caused by a museum visit. The value, in turn, is defined here as something precious, in the context of the organization and in relation to what is socially expected, defined as «this should be», and what is good. This is the value that is determined by the type of social mentality, and at the same time recognizing what has the characteristics of autotelic validity. It applies to the civic, aesthetic and organizational dimension. Values take the form of not always explicitly expressed preferences, interests, norms. The value indicator is any offer assessment included in the guest notes entered in the exhibition book in Museum Varmia and Masuria in Olsztyn.

More and more corporations , both multinationals and SMEs, decide that during their business activities they take into consideration such strict social and environmental aspects that are beyond the rules and requirements of the country they operate in. One of its reasons is that the corporate decisions have impacts not only on the immediate environment but also on the whole society. The present study examines and reveals the value priorities of the chief executives and the impact of those on CSR among Hungarian small and medium enterprises. The study also represents the value of the sample. The results of the primary research reveals that the value preferences of the general managers have their impact on the CSR activities of the company and hence certain main values of the individual determine the practice of the CSR. Those leaders who can be characterised by goodwill and universalism are more concerned with CSR and it is clearly shown in their CSR activities. In the examined Hungarian sample a group of leaders (25%) could be distinguished who consider CSR as a competitive advantage. These leaders are considered to be leaders with modern CSR viewpoint. They are committed to CSR and implement the modern CSR approach into practice, into the strategy of the corporation and into their activity and guide their organisation along these aspects.

Określanie stopnia zależności między aktywami jest niezbędne w wielu obszarach rynku finansowego. Koncepcja zależności w ogonie rozkładu stanowi obecny trend w ocenie siły ekstremalnych zależności. Przeprowadzona została analiza zależności w ogonie rozkładu na podstawie stóp zwrotu wybranych spółek polskiej giełdy oraz analiza porównawcza wybranych testów niezależności: Neyman-Pearson i Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Celem pracy jest uwypuklenie potrzeby uwzględniania zagadnienia określania zależności w ogonach rozkładu stop zwrotu składników portfela w zarządzaniu portfelem inwestycyjnym.

Lean Management (LM), a modern approach to business, has been gaining importance since the beginning of the 21st century. Lean Manufacturing used by the Japanese automakers continuously seeks to improve business processes by reducing amounts of waste in the long term. Many LM implementations have been spectacular successes, contributing to companies’ increased profitability, reduced inventories and manufacturing times, as well as fewer inhouse operations. This article deals with a step-by-step implementation of Lean Management in a Poland-based manufacturer owned by a transnational concern. The waste identification and measurement method presented in the article can be used by practically any traditionally managed firm. Gradual elimination of waste (muda) brings a firm’s conventional model of management closer to the Lean Management concept, promising measurable benefits even if the firm is not ready to take further steps into Lean Management.

The paper evaluates Central and Eastern European countries’ (CEEs) location in global vertical specialization (global value chains, GVCs). To locate each country in global value chains (upstream or downstream segment/market) and to compare them with the selected countries, a very selective methodology was adopted. We concluded that (a) CEE countries differ in the levels of their participation in production linkages. Countries that have stronger links with Western European countries, especially with Germany, are more integrated; (b) a large share of the CEE countries’ gross exports passes through Western European GVCs; (c) most exporters in Central and Eastern Europe are positioned in the downstream segments of production rather than in the upstream markets. The current article focuses on the special aspects of venture capital’s value creation methods, summarizing the author’s researches in this field. This article puts special emphasis on the scrutiny of the Hungarian market as the value creation practices on the domestic market have not been revealed thoroughly in the literature yet. The article attempts to examine the performance of venture capital, especially the JEREMIE funds, according to the limited available secondary data of the companies involved, which helps to assess the role of the government in bridging the financial gap and solving the problems in the venture capital market in Hungary. In this field reliable statistical data is not available, but there is an ongoing primer research led by the author, producing new information soon. The article presents the special investment and value creating methods of venture capitalists. In the first part of the article the theoretical background is presented, and in the second part of the article the author’s research results are demonstrated following the same order.

Since the neoclassical school, the separation between facts and values, is and ought, positive and normative, has become a concern in conventional economic analyses. Economics should focus on facts, and present general principles, leaving the choice of various technical alternatives to policy makers. This article addresses the following questions: can economics, seen as a positive science, be separated from the political dimension? Is it possible to separate facts from values or are they necessarily intertwined?After showing how the separation between economics and moral philosophy unfolded throughout the history of economic thought, the article analyses the factvalue dichotomy discussion and concludes that facts and values are necessarily intertwined. Then, the article shows that the premises and theories of conventional economic theories contain hidden values, despite being presented as universal truths on which policies are based, and thus fail to discuss the various perspectives of the problems.Reviving a tradition commenced by Aristotle, the article concludes by arguing that economics is necessarily moral and political. However, the acknowledgement of the normative nature of economics cannot compromise the pursuit of objectivity.

Drawing on the processual perspective in management this article explores the process of the institutionalization of new practice in the context of value co-creation. The Service-Dominant logic perspective places the notion of value creation in the interaction between an organization and its customers. Therefore the contemporary research stream shows a bias towards the notion of a customer as a crucial contributor and beneficiary in the value creation process [Vargo and Lusch 2006a, 2008]. Following recent calls for research with a holistic approach it may be assumed that there is an underdeveloped processual perspective on value co-creation that offers a cognitive framework of routines and activities performed on an everyday basis within the Giddensian structuration theory. Using the Giddensian theory value co-creation can be perceived as a platform for the adoption of new practices. The purpose of the article is to determine the role of value co-creation processes in the context of initiating and institutionalizing of new practice in an organization. A comparative case study was carried out which illustrates the thesis that spontaneous actions form an important category of initiating change within the everyday use of value co-creation.
