    The article focuses on the assumption that it is worth getting interested in sociological concepts in the spirit of sociology of sociology. It happens that biographies of sociological concepts themselves are interesting. Above all, however, they tell a lot on the more general mechanisms, which construct the field of sociology-science. The basic part of the article focuses on unlucky concepts: (1) concepts which diverged from their original theoretical context, (2) concepts which started functioning as summaries of theories (at a loss for the concepts and summarized theories) and (3) concepts which have been promising as tools for analysis and description of the social world, but have never been included in the dictionary of key sociological terms as they were “killed” by endless discussions on their status and usefulness. The attempt to examine the history of (selected) unlucky concepts has two goals: first, recognizing mechanisms pushing sociology-science out of the field; second, identification of some development barriers of contemporary sociology.

    W artykule podjęto próbę rekonstrukcji kształtowania się pola socjologii filmu i kina na podstawie analizy porównawczej ważnych, zagranicznych i polskich prac mieszczących się w ramach opisywanej subdyscypliny. Wśród nich znajdują się: pionierskie rozprawy oraz badania dotyczące kina i filmu, socjologiczne postulaty i programy badawcze, studia socjologiczne, opracowania poświęcone socjologii filmu i kina. Główny cel stanowiło uporządkowanie i podsumowanie dziedzictwa wąskiej dyscypliny socjologii filmu i kina, ujęcie pewnych praktyk, orientacji i nurtów badawczych. Autorka ukazała także obszar badań poświęcony instytucjom filmowym jako słabo reprezentowanym w praktyce badań socjologicznych w Polsce i za granicą. Inspirację teoretyczną dla nakreślonych poszukiwań stanowi teoria praktyki naukowej Pierre’a Bourdieu, a także pojęcia: habitus, pole oraz kapitał.
    The article attempts to reconstruct the field of the sociology of film and cinema based on a comparative analysis of important foreign and Polish works falling within the described subdiscipline. Among them are pioneering dissertations and research on cinema and film, sociological research programs, sociological studies, and studies devoted to the sociology of film and cinema. The main goal was to organise and summarise the heritage of the narrow discipline of film and cinema sociology, and to include certain practices, orientations and research trends. The author also showed the area of research devoted to film institutions as being poorly represented in the practice of sociological research in Poland and abroad. The theoretical inspiration for the explorations is Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of scientific practice as well as the notion of habitus, field and capital.

    Various initiatives have been launched to encourage sociology students studying in the UK to engage more with quantitative research methods (for example: Dale et al., 2008; Adney and Carey, 2009; Falkingham et al., 2009), however, their success has been limited. Embedding quantitative methods in substantive sociology curricula has been suggested as one way to reduce students’ anxieties about learning quantitative research methods (Williams et al., 2015). This approach has been employed at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences, where quantitative skills have been strategically incorporated into various aspects of a first year undergraduate substantive module. This paper will reflect on the experience of teaching on this module. The paper will conclude that while the introduction of quantitative content into substantive modules indicates support for change, embedding alone cannot be viewed as a single solution to encouraging to students’ to learn about or utilise quantitative research methods. Two possible reasons for this will be suggested. Firstly, it will be argued that the majority of students no longer pursue sociology at degree level in order to gain the skills to become a competent social researcher, but rather see sociology as a discipline that will equip them with transferable and desirable skills for many occupations. Consequently, engagement with quantitative research methods is not essential to students’ strategic approach to learning as it was for previous generations who wished to understand how to study their social world. Secondly, it will be suggested that the deficit of quantitative methods in mainstream British sociology journals and the methodological preferences of practicing sociologists leads to speculation over the available staff who are capable of delivering an integrated curriculum with quantitative methods embedded in substantive modules.

    The cause to write an article was a question how to examine emotions which are of spatial nature. While the colloquial language copes with “spatiality” of feelings – it knows emotions and calls them (mood, atmosphere, climate, colour) – sociology has not developed a category enabling a systematic analysis of this phenomenon so far. In the theory of arts, the situation is different. The leading subject of the text is reflection on possibility of combining the theory of art and sociology of emotions. The proposed link is to be the concept of image treated as “sensitizing concept” (Herbert Blumer). In the article, I refer to the concepts having their roots in philosophy, social psychology and sociology of emotions which touch upon the issue of spatiality of emotions and compare them to the concepts related to the theory of image.

    Od czasów rewolucji przemysłowej w Anglii w XVIII wieku powieść przemysłowa odgrywała znaczącą role w krajach uprzemysłowionych w uświadamianiu pracowników, polityków i opinii publicznej o rzeczywistych warunkach pracy w przemyśle i usługach. Dobrze znanymi przykładami są powieści przemysłowe pisarzy angielskich epoki wiktoriańskiej, Dickensa i Gaskell. W innych krajach powieść przemysłowa rozwinęła się również w dobrze znany gatunek związany z procesami uprzemysłowienia. We Francji, “naturalistyczne” powieści przemysłowe Zoli wywarły znaczący wpływ na politykę dotyczącą świata pracy w okresie Trzeciej Republiki. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, powieści przemysłowe zaczęły powstawać również w innych krajach uprzemysłowionych: przed I Wojną Światową w USA, w okresie międzywojennym w Niemczej i ZSRR, a po II Wojnie Światowej we Włoszech. Powieści te opierały się często na badaniach w oparciu o dane zastane oraz badania empiryczne w terenie. W tym sensie, powieści te są również przejawami pseudosocjologii lub socjologii ex ante, niedocenianymi niestety przez istniejącą socjologię przemysłu. W artykule ilustruję tą tezę, porównując i zestawiając ze sobą powieści przemysłowe napisane w dwóch ważnych krajach europejskich, w dwóch odmiennych okresach czasu, Niemczech okresu Republiki Weimarskiej w latach 20. XX wieku oraz powojennych Włoszech w latach 50. i wczesnych latach 60. XX wieku.
    Since the English Industrial Revolution in the 18th century the industrial novel has played a significant role in industrialized countries by making workers, politicians, policy makers and the general public aware of actual working conditions in industry and services. Also, these novels contributed positively to workers emancipation. Well-known examples are the industrial novels of the English Victorian writers Dickens and Gaskell. Also in other countries the industrial novel developed into a well-known literary genre linked with the process of industrialization. In France Zola’s “naturalist” industrial novels had a significant influence on labour policies at the time of the Third Republic. After the turn of the 19th century the industrial novel also became manifest in other industrialized countries: before World War I in the USA, by the Inter-bellum in Germany and the USSR, and after World War II in Italy. Often these novels were based on desk research or empirical research on-site. Therefore, these novels are also expressions of pseudo- or ex-ante sociology, regretfully underestimated in vested industrial sociology. By comparing and juxtaposing industrial novels written in two important European industrial countries in two different time periods, Weimar Germany in the 1920s, and post-war Italy in the 1950s and early 1960s, I will illustrate this.

    The article shows how a scientist, an experiencedsocial and streetworker perceives the space resided by the homeless. Beginner researcher and experienced social worker tries to recreate the reality of the homeless people and describe their world. The article shows how the home(less) do not perceive themselves as entirely homeless as actually they have home which they can arrange at any given moment. The text presents the world of the homeless as the world of the “homeful” people; it attempts to reconstruct the fragments of their everyday life and rituals that they create within the space arranged into their “homefullness”. Thanks to this article, the Reader may, experience the life of homeless people from another perspective. They can see that every homeless person has their own space and defined limits. The article present two different perspectives of homelessness; one belonging to the homeless people and the other to the society. The world that is unreal to one person can be a real home to another.

    Artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie miejskiej perspektywy w pracy naukowej Elżbiety Tarkowskiej. Uczona, kojarzona głównie z socjologią czasu, kultury i ubóstwa, podejmowała wątki miejskie w swoich publikacjach, projektach badawczych oraz pracy dydaktycznej, tworząc specyficzny sposób patrzenia na miasto. Na podstawie analizy dorobku naukowego Elżbiety Tarkowskiej w artykule zostały opisane podejmowane przez nią wątki dotyczące przemian miasta w czasie, kultury miejskiej, jej multisensoryczności oraz stylów życia mieszkańców współczesnych miast. Perspektywa postrzegania zjawisk miejskich w kategoriach procesualności, czasoprzestrzeni, pamięci, mikro- -zależności i lokalności może służyć badaczom społecznym jako narzędzie analityczne w badaniu miasta i miejskości.
    This article aims to show the urban perspective in Elżbieta Tarkowska’s academic work. The scientist commonly associated with time, culture and poverty, undertook city-related topics in numerous publications, research and her didactic work. The result is a unique way of looking at the city. Based on her publications, in the article, we show points related to space-time, the transformation of the city in time, urban culture, its multi-sensuality and the lifestyles of the inhabitants of modern cities. Elżbieta Tarkowska’s urban perspective connected with trajectory, space-time, memory, micro-reliances and locality can be useful for other social researchers as a way to analyse cities and urban life.

    Celem artykułu jest nakreślenie obszaru badawczego w ramach socjologii medycyny, który socjologowie brytyjscy nazwali socjologią farmaceutyków. Zawierają się w niej: 1) procesy medykalizacji i farmaceutykalizacji, 2) społeczny kontekst tworzenia regulacji dotyczących leków, 3) praktyki marketingowe przemysłu farmaceutycznego, 4) oczekiwania społeczne dotyczące innowacji farmaceutycznych, 5) konsumpcja leków. W artykule omówiono powstanie i rozwój socjologii farmaceutyków oraz dokonano przeglądu badań mieszczących się w tym obszarze. Przedstawiono także argumenty dowodzące użyteczności terminu „socjologia farmaceutyków” w badaniach nad społecznymi konsekwencjami korzystania z leków oraz procesem farmaceutykalizacji.
    The aim of the article is to outline the subfield within the sociology of medicine which British sociologists called the sociology of pharmaceuticals. It contains: 1) the processes of medication and pharmaceuticalisation, 2) the social context of drug regulation, 3) marketing practices of the pharmaceutical industry, 4) social expectations regarding pharmaceutical innovations, and 5) drug consumption. The article will discuss the emergence and development of the sociology of pharmaceuticals, and a review of research in this area will be made. Finally, arguments will be presented showing the usefulness of the term sociology of pharmaceuticals in research on the social consequences of drug use and the process of pharmaceuticalisation.

    Artykuł dotyczy wpływu obecnej w anglosaskim systemie prawnym argumentacji obrony przez kulturę na polską aktualną rzeczywistość społeczno-prawną. Wychodząc od streszczenia kwestii, autor analizuje obecny stan prawny oraz przywołuje precedensowe przypadki z polskiej i międzynarodowej praktyki sądowej, aby przedstawić najistotniejszy element zjawiska. Głównym pytaniem, na które autor poszukuje odpowiedzi jest pytanie o to czy tytułowa argumentacja może stanowić kontratyp pozaustawowy, przesłankę złagodzenia odpowiedzialności karnej czy jeszcze coś innego. Próba odpowiedzi odwołuje się do dotąd niedocenianej w Polsce koncepcji sprawiedliwości wyrównawczej.
    The article is devoted to the influence of common law legal argumentation called “the Cultural Defense” on the contemporary Polish legal reality. Starting with a summary of the concept, the author analyses current Polish law and focuses on precedents from national and international cases in order to present the most essential elements of the abovementioned phenomenon. The author tries to provide an answer whether the subject in question could be qualified as a non-statutory justification, a premise for the commutation of sentence or something else. An attempt to reply to such a question recalls compensatory justice which in Poland is still underestimated.

    The goal of the presented paper is to show the qualities of Polish sociology of law that arise from how it formed and developed under the influence of a particular theoretical inspiration – the theory of Leon Petrażycki – specifically the ways that tradition has been influencing the direction of studies, as well as the descriptions of legal reality. According to the author, that influence is not limited to direct references, but has a broader scope that is expressed in an approach to analyzing the social context and functions of legal phenomena. To further emphasize the originality of Polish sociology of law, the article explains the differences between selected elements of Petrażycki’s theories and the proposals of Eugene Ehrlich. The problems that were undertaken by both scholars, and are still important to socio-legal studies, were presented from that point of view. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the elements of Petrażycki’s works that did not appear elsewhere in early socio-legal thought. The study field is crucially narrowed by not orienting it towards analyzing and comparing initial ideas of Petrażycki and Ehrlich. Rather, it aims to analyze the possible influence of different views on differentiating the subjects of studies as well as their goals. In particular, the paper draws attention to the way Polish scholarship uniquely perceives the problematics of the social nature of legal phenomena, legal pluralism, the relationship between law and state (and especially legal phenomena unrelated to the state), legal culture and the usefulness of law as an instrument of social change. This is the perspective from which the paper presents selected Polish research projects and socio-legal analyses. The paper chiefly attempts to show a very particular quality of Polish sociology of law: the affirmation of legal phenomena that forms the basis for critique of faulty and socially dysfunctional official law.

    W artykule dokonano przeglądu wybranych koncepcji wykorzystywanych przez badaczy z kręgu studiów nad muzyką popularną. Cechą wspólną tych koncepcji jest wykorzystywanie lub nawiązywanie do dorobku socjologii. Ukazane są takie obszary badań, jak: studia nad fanami, koncepcja produkcji kultury, koncepcja scen muzycznych, koncepcja pola produkcji kulturowej oraz koncepcja neoplemion. Prezentacja tych koncepcji stanowi głos w dyskusji nad rozwojem socjologii muzyki w Polsce.
    The paper analyzes selected concepts used by researchers in the field of popular music studies. All these concepts draw on works conducted by sociologists. The following concepts are discussed: fan studies, production of culture, music scenes, field of cultural production, neo-tribes. Discussion of these concepts is followed by a call for their wider implementation by Polish researchers working in the field of sociology of music.

    Opis:
    In this paper author presents the achievemenets of Leon Petrażycki and his novelty in various areas of humanities. Petrażycki is recognised as forerunner of deontic logic, and also as creator of the principle of adeqacy, ennoblement of law, pluralistic vision of law. He exhibits primacy of legal norms over moral norm, and he establish scientific legal policy. Additionaly Petrażycki is treated as classic of the sociology of law and also as the artificer of emotions.

    Opis:
    The paper aims to study the work of Leon Petrazycki and analyze modern Ukrainian scholars’ opinions on Petrazycki’s scientific achievements. This study focuses on Petrazycki’s work, his psychological theory, in particular, in view of our own perspective on the law and within the framework of our theological and sociological theory, which considers the law as a social life phenomenon and regards moral imperative of the Almighty God as the basis of law. Every civilization communicates moral imperative through sacred writings (the Ten Commandments in Christian Bible, six hundred and seven rules in Jewish Torah, seventy-two rules in Muslim Quran). It is within the framework of this moral imperative that the society and the state develop the law. The paper addresses the modern absurdity and at the same time antinomy of law, lying in the fact that there is more and more law in the society but less and less law in life of an individual due to the fact that states rapidly upscale rulemaking, but laws are becoming less accessible to an individual. This study draws on conceptual issues of Petrazycki’s theoretical heritage, fundamental principles of his psychological theory, as well as connection between law and morality, described by Petrazycki, which are the spiritual heritage of society. The most important issues of Petrazycki’s work, in our opinion, are studying the nature of law, balance of emotion and intellect, official and intuitive, desirable and actual components in law, as well as subjective and objective law, law policy and power. The paper reveals that assessment of Petrazycki’s work in modern Ukrainian legal studies is ambivalent: from sharply critical (Prof. P. Rabinovich), compliant with Russian (O. Timoshina (St. Petersburg)) approach and critical yet positive perception of Petrazycki’s psychological theory (S. Maksymov, O. Merezhko, M. Kuz, O. Stovba) to admiration for Petrazycki’s genius, whose work was ahead of his time (I. Bezklubyi, N. Huralenko, V. Dudchenko, O. Rohach, M. Savchyn, V. Tymoshenko). Thus, the research findings suggest that Petrazycki’s work belongs not only to the past, but also to the present and future of jurisprudence, sociology, psychology, economics. Further in-depth analysis of Petrazycki’s heritage will contribute to more accurate diagnosis of urgent legal issues in social development of modern Ukraine, real assertion of personocentrism as a postulate of contemporary theoretical jurisprudence and guidelines for public authorities, as well as practical solution to many controversial scientific and legal issues.
