Opis:
Worldwide known poet, Czesław Miłosz, was he a dissident? The idea of ‘dissidency’ usual-ly excludes appreciation. Yet Miłosz, being always in opposition to dominant tendencies, was always acknowledged. The article presents three periods of his life: in Vilnius, in Paris and in America. In catholic and conservative Vilnius he represented a “left¬ wing” orienta-tion. Afterwords when he worked in Polish radio, it caused his transfer to Warsaw. His leftist beliefs explain his work in diplomacy for a new regime. This continued till 1950 when Miłosz, terrified with Stalinism, chose asylum in Paris. He was being fiercely attacked both by conservative emigration and leftist French intellectuals. He was accepted, however, by Parisian Kultura circle – the most creative centre of political reflection. In The Captive Mind – soon acknowledged as the most important book in this matter – Miłosz masterfully diagno-ses “a new faith”. In 1960 Miłosz became a professor in the Department of Slavic Lan-guages and Literatures in Berkeley. It was there that important works analyzing nihilistic crisis of Western civilization and consumerism connected with Americanization were writ-ten: The Land of Ulro (1977), Emperor of the Earth (1977) and especially A View of San Francisco Bay (1988). His reflections concentrate also on ontological crisis and working on new reli-gious imagination. Czesław Miłosz was never a politician or oppositionist in a traditional sense of these terms. Nevertheless, he kept searching for the essence and roots of ideology, the style of life and faith, regarding the fundamental values he fiercely criticized Communism, Ameri-canization and the usurpation of faith by Polish nationalism. He was appreciated, but pro-tests against his burial at Skałka confirm how sharp and influential his observations were.

Opis:
Contemporary Hollywood film narrates the fear of monstrous science; attending to the modulations of medicine, capital and the body. The filmic body is employed to illustrate the power of the new biotechnologies to create and sustain life and the new sets of social relations which are a consequence of the marriage of capital and medicine. In the Hollywood film, persons who do not fit the ideal healthy persona have a moral duty to pursue repair and transformation. Constructed as inherently lacking, the unhealthy body becomes a repository for social anxieties about control and vulnerability, vis-à-vis the enormous and exponentially expanding science and technology fields. Hierarchies of embodiment are played out on the Big Screen as imperfect bodies are excluded from public life, power and status and urged to strive for “optimization”. Late modern societies present the possibility of new technologies which have the potential to radicalize bodies. However, these potential modulations are ultimately derived from a set of ideologies around the body and the power of the individual to enact an individualized solution. Contemporary narratives circulate around ownership of capital and the price of “repair.” This marriage of science and capital in popular narratives may be indicative of concerns for our future, as the power to make and repair life seems to rest increasingly in the hands of an elite.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of the ethical views of Bernard Rollin, an American zoologist and philosopher who examined how the education about the moral status of animals has been affected by the so-called scientific ideology. This way of thinking denies animal suffering and consciousness in stark contrast with our commonsense knowledge and collective human experience. Rollin points to positivism and behaviourism as twin philosophical and psychological sources of this scientific ideology. Positivism rejected the concept of consciousness as a subjective, metaphysical, unscientific, non-measurable state and separated science from values and ethics. Behaviourism further obstructed moral reflection on the acceptable methods of treatment of animals not only by eliminating the category of animal consciousness, but also by replacing the vocabulary to describe its experimental manifestations with one of observable actions (reinforcement and aversion). Behaviourism denies animal suffering and other states of consciousness on the epistemological principle that they are difficult to verify. This paradigm continues to be successfully applied in modern biomedical laboratories and blinds scientists to both the pain inflicted on animals and the moral repercussions of animal consciousness. Positivism and behaviourism alike cast animals as models and biological mechanisms to distort our understanding of their nature and justify their harm. The article discusses the significance of the concept of ideology for social sciences. Although this concept was abandoned a long time ago in favour of the more “neutral” terms, due to Marxism and psychoanalysis it returned to social sciences in the second half of the 20th century. In the article, I present the concept of Louis Althusser, whose perception of ideological phenomena shifts them from the field of studies on cognitive mistakes and manipulation towards the socialization theory. I discuss shortly the psychoanalytical sources of this concept and point to the sociological tradition where similar concepts and problems can be found. I use the empirical example to illustrate the consequences of Althusser’s theory for understanding ideology, and Slavoj Zizek’s theory to show the ways out of certain impasse of this theory. In the summary, the question returns on the importance of the concept of ideology for social sciences.

Can a comic book communicate support to political status quo and strive to educate a society of obedient citizens who share common conservative values? Can it, in other cases, encourage tough questions and sound rebellious? And why are graphic novels so efficient as means of propaganda and ideological impact? Selected stories from “Commando” and “Battle” war comic series are discussed along with Alan Moore’s and David Lloyd’s V for Vendetta in order to look at hierarchical versus anarchistic political communication in British graphic novels. Special attention is paid to uniqueness of comic books as a medium.

Opis:
Theoreticians of the Russian Narodnik movement emphasized the virtues of the traditional peasant economy and set the role of Russian intelligentsia in pursuit of the socio-economic progress of the country, where emphasis was placed mainly on the work of the people and on the ideals of the people. Both the legal as well as the illegal press, which constituted a specific public forum of ideological supporters, came to the theorists of the movement’s aid in propagating the Narodnik ideas. In fact, never before was literature in Russia so socially involved. Under the influence of the then press the ordinary reader became a zealous social activist. The subject of this article is an analysis of the process of ideological consciousness formation of the Russian society of the second half of the 19th century, when journalism was so important.

The main objective of this article is to demonstrate that different kinds of borders which we use to treat as a stable phenomenon are, in fact, a result of ideological manipulation. In the political sphere it was clearly demonstrated by Frederik Barth and Zygmunt Bauman. Daniel Boyarin did similar deconstruction of the border between Judaism and Christianity. According to Boyarin, the best way to overcome the theological and ideological tensions between Jews and Christians is a philological analysis of the common religious heritage.

Opis:
Over last decades, and quite in line with an almost global trend, the Czech party system has been undergoing a shift towards more fragmentation, increasing voter volatility, decreasing party stability, erosion of party-society linkages and ever more personalised politics. As a part of this, ideologies have become vaguer and shallower. The Civic Democratic Party (Občanská demokratická strana, ODS) has probably been the most successful right wing political party in the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. This paper attempts to identify the British inspirations over the various stages of the ODS’s development and follow the changing interplay in the “triple i” triangle of ideology-identity-image. W ciągu ostatnich dekad, zgodnie z ogólnoświatowymi trendami, system partyjny w Republice Czeskiej zmierzał ku większej fragmentacji, zmienności decyzji wyborców, mniejszej stabilności partii politycznych, erozji związków partii ze społeczeństwem i personalizacji polityki. Częścią tych zmian było spłycenie i rozmycie partyjnych ideologii. Wśród prawicowych partii w nowych demokracjach Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej, czeska Obywatelska Partia Demokratyczna (Občanská demokratická strana, ODS) przez długi czas odnosiła największe sukcesy. Niniejszy artykuł analizuje brytyjskie inspiracje na różnych etapach rozwoju ODS i śledzi zmienne interakcje w partyjnym trójkącie ideologii, tożsamości i wizerunku.

W artykule przedstawiam wyniki badań własnych dotyczące problemów polskiej rodziny w oczach polityków partii najbardziej znaczących dla życia społecznego, współtworzących polski parlament w latach 2007-2010 i jednocześnie funkcjonujących do dnia dzisiejszego: PiS, PO, PSL i SLD. Chcąc uzupełnić ten obraz, porównuję je z problemami rodziny obecnymi w programach wyborczych wskazanych ugrupowań politycznych z 2011 roku.
Nowadays situation of Polish families becomes a subject of many passionate discussions, conducted from the theoretical, ideological and philosophy of life perspective and from practice of social life. In this context it is worth considering how people with potentially the greatest impact on the creation of a formal, legal framework for functioning of Polish family see its contemporary situation. Politicians point of view on difficulties in existence of the polish family will be associated with propositions of revisions of the law, determining direction and form of legislative initiatives relevant to this area of society. In this article I present results of research on the contemporary problems of Polish family in the eyes of politicians from parties which have been most significant for social life, setting up the Polish parliament in 2007-2010, while functioning to this day: PiS, PO, PSL and SLD. To complement this image I also show family problems present in the election programs of this parties in 2011.

A category of secondary orality appeared in debate over the condition of contemporary culture by dint of Walter Jackson Ong’s research on influence of technology of word over an awareness of western man. Its concept designates a specific type of communicational situation, which is created by a twentieth-century ways of transmission of informations, like radio, television, telephone and another electronic voice-devices. In Ong’s works the perspective of secondary orality functions in context of the model of Greek culture, which preceded a beginning of the characterstic type of mentality, connected with the interiorization of script. The original oral awareness was dipped in world of mythical stories, which was created a cultural identity by dint of the acts of memorization and oral transmission of poetic experience. Analogies and differences between secondary and primary orality tease to ask about function and understanding the category of myth in perspective the first of them, which didn't appear in Ong’s works. A response to this question must connect with consideration of understanding the myth in contemporary reflection about the culture and with a search of symptoms of its presence in middle-class and consumerist societies, in which have appeared the technology of secondary orality. In my paper I'd like to try to recreate this elements of cultural background of contemporariness, which relate the age of twentieth-century orality to its ancient mythical grounding but equally indulge in transformations by dint of evolution of human condition in western culture
