    This empirical paper examines a process, starting with the managerial decision to make service design an organizational capability, and follows it as it unfolds over time within one organization. Service design has become an established business practice of how firms create new products and services to promote differentiation in an increasingly uncertain business landscape. Implicit in the literature on service design are assumptions about strategic implications of adopting the prescribed innovation methods and tools. However, little is known about how service design evolves into an organizational capability enabling firms to transform their existing businesses and sustain competitiveness. Through a longitudinal, exploratory case study of service design practices in one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, we explicate mechanisms through which service design evolves into an organizational capability by exploring the research question: what are the mechanisms through which service design develops into an organizational capability? Our study reveals the effect of an initial introduction of service design tools, identification of boundary-spanning actors and co-alignment of dedicated resources between internal functions, as well as through co-creation with customers. Over time, these activities lead to the adoption of service design practices, and subsequently these practices spark incremental learning throughout the organization, alter managerial decisions and influence multiple paths for the development of new capabilities. Reporting on this process, we are able to describe how service design practices were disseminated and institutionalized within the organization we observed. This study thus contributes by informing how service design can evolve into an organizational capability, as well as by bridging the emerging literature on service design and design thinking with established strategy theory. Further research will have to be conducted to confirm if the same mechanisms are observable across contexts and in other firms, and several future research directions are identified. In addition, the study also has implications for practice as it demonstrates how service design methodology can be implemented and has strategic implications for organizations.

    This text presents and discusses results of empirical research conducted during 3 school semesters (1.5 of school year) in a primary school in Poland. The research focused on the introduction of tablets (iPads) to didactic design and aimed at the observation of learning processes of the entire school community in connection with the appearance of a new educational actor. We used a qualitative research approach, mainly video-ethnography (60 hours of recorded material). This research approach resulted in the identification of maps of teaching and learning practices in the changing school field.

    Urban design schemes accompanied by avant-garde design of space have been an outcome of economic growth of cities and countries in many periods of time. At the beginning of the 21st century, Nieuw Crooswijk in Rotterdam was the largest area involved in nationally launched policies. Many times the conflicts surrounding the plan were in the news, particularly concerning the aim to attract higher incomes. Gentrification, with displacement of present and original residents forms a central issue and the discussions in Nieuw Crooswijk fit within the more general urban landscape and language of urban regeneration in Europe.

    The paper presents the strategy of redevelopment of the post-industrial King’s Cross area in London – one of the biggest European investments in the last years (the surface of approx. 67 acres), which could be considered the perfect case study for similar works. The author described in details the investment process, as well as the principles and effects of functional and spatial changes that have led to creation of the new system of open space, adaptation of selected post-industrial buildings for new functions (also the buildings proclaimed as a monument) and also fostering a new urban dimension to the wastelands. Detailed architectural issues are presented on the example of 3 squares: Granary Square, Pancras Square and King’s Cross Square. Field research was realized from 2011 to 2016.

    Many museums in Poland and all over the world make use of mobile technologies. Unfortunately, neither Polish nor overseas applications offer universal solutions for users with different levels of knowledge and different disabilities. People with sight and hearing disabilities, as well as those physically handicapped, are very often culturally excluded, which means they are excluded from an important aspect of social life. As part of the project ‘OPENArt – Contemporary Art for All,’ a multimedia guide was developed in the form of an application for portable devices. It was designed in accordance with the participatory design methodology and principles of universal design. It facilitates access to works of art exposed to people with hearing and visual impairments. The application can be used to educate the blind, visually impaired, the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as people working with non-disabled children in arts and language classes. In the paper the innovative features of the guide were presented, and its educational values were characterized.

    The increasing interest in applying small area estimation methods urges the needs for training in small area estimation. To better understand the behaviour of small area estimators in practice, simulations are a feasible way for evaluating and teaching properties of the estimators of interest. By designing such simulation studies, students gain a deeper understanding of small area estimation methods. Thus, we encourage to use appropriate simulations as an additional interactive tool in teaching small area estimation methods.

    This paper aims to address and explore the problem of rendering Alasdair Gray’s prose in Polish, by focusing on his works’ extra-narrative elements. It seeks to identify the difficulties and limitations in translating an author of this kind – a writer, but also, and perhaps primarily, an artist, whose texts function as book-objects, relying heavily on artwork as well as typographical experimentation. The analysis, centred on Gray’s Lanark, 1982, Janine and Poor Things, leads to a discussion of the broader question of translating these books in which the actual text is only part of the story.

    The graphic designs proposed by Polish publishers cannot be compared neither in number, nor in diversity to those presented by Margaret C. Sullivan in Jane Austen Cover to Cover: 200 Years of Classic Book Covers. Nevertheless, they are a valuable and still undiscussed source of knowledge on the Polish reception of Austen’s novels. Further information on this subject is provided in the first part of the paper by a compilation of book series in which some or all of the texts by Austen have appeared since the 1990s. The analysis of the book covers takes into consideration the relation between the design and the content of the narrative as well as the character of the artwork and its origin. The most popular were 19th century paintings (portraits, genre scenes, less frequently landscapes), film stills from the movie adaptations and floral patterns. As one of the aims of the study was to answer the question how the covers direct the reading process and place the text in the literary tradition, the remarks on the publishers’ choices were supplemented with the readers’ reviews. In the conclusion, it was suggested how the potential, new editions could be designed to stand out from the former ones.

    Już po raz drugi na wyspie Bornholm w Danii odbył się European Glass Contex 2012 będący częścią sympozjum poświęconemu współczesnej sztuce szkła i ceramiki. Co dwa lata odbywają się wymiennie European Glass Context oraz European Ceramic Context, które są jednymi z bardziej liczących się przeglądów tych sztuk. Tegoroczne wydarzenie skupiło się przede wszystkim na dwóch wystawach głównych – Europejskie Szkło Artystyczne i Nowy Talent – w których wzięło udział 96 artystów z 28 krajów Europy. Z Polski do udziału zostały zaproszone cztery artystki: Barbara Idzikowska, Monika Rubaniuk (kategoria: Artyści Szkła) oraz Patrycja Dubiel i Marzena Krzemińska (kategoria: Nowy Talent). Program European Glass Context był bardzo rozbudowany (warsztaty, seminarium, konferencja naukowa) którego tematem przewodnim było 50 lecie ruchu Studio Glass powstałego w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Organizatorzy pragnęli poddać rozważaniom aktualną kondycję sztuki szklanej materii, w jaki sposób zmieniała się na przestrzeni lat i co ważniejsze, czy szkło znalazło swoich odbiorców? European Glass Context jest wydarzeniem, które pomaga w odpowiedzi na postawione powyżej pytania. Daje możliwość skonfrontowania różnych postaw artystycznych w jednym czasie, w jednym miejscu.
    European Glass Context 2012 is a part of a biennial symposium of European contemporary glass and ceramics on the island of Bornholm in Denmark. Together with European Ceramic Context it is one of the most important reviews of these arts. This year’s event was focused mainly on two main exhibitions: European Glass Art and New Talent – during which works of 96 artists from 28 European countries were presented. Four Polish artists were invited: Barbara Idzikowska and Monika Rubaniuk (Glass Art category), as well as Patrycja Dubiel and Marzena Krzemińska (New Talent category). The program of European Glass Context 2012 was unusually varied, and consisted of workshops, educational seminars as well as a conference. The theme of the EGC 2012 was the 50th anniversary of Studio Glass movement, which originated in the United States. The organizers wished to refl ect on the condition of contemporary glass art matt er, how it has changed during the years, and what is more important, has it found its audience? European Glass Context is an event which helps to answer the questions stated above. It provides an opportunity to confront various artistic creations at the same time, in the same place.     Problem dotyczy oceny wartości średnie (globalnej) zmiennej w populacji ustalonej I skończonej. Zakład się, że z góry są znane w populacji wartości dodatniej zmiennej pomocniczej. Do estymacji użyto strategia kwantylowej zależnej m.in. od planu losowania proporcjonalnego do nieujemnej funkcji kwantyla z próby zmiennej pomocniczej. Ponadto, brano pod uwagę estymator Horvitza- Thompsona oraz estymator ilorazowy. Porównanie dokładności przeprowadzono na podstawie symulacji komputerowej.

    Uczniowie niesłyszący i słabosłyszący coraz powszechniej uczą się w szkołach ogólnodostępnych i integracyjnych. Aby ich nauczanie było skuteczne, konieczne jest zapewnienie szeregu dostosowań, czasem modyfikacji metod i form pracy nauczyciela. Celem artykułu jest omówienie zagadnienia dostosowania lekcji języka angielskiego jako obcego w nauczaniu wczesnoszkolnym do potrzeb uczniów z dysfunkcją słuchu. Podstawą do efektywnej edukacji w tym zakresie jest przygotowanie programów nauczania, podręczników i obudowy dydaktycznej zgodne z zasadami projektowania uniwersalnego, a następnie zaplanowanie niezbędnych dostosowań i modyfikacji indywidualnie do potrzeb i możliwości dzieci. Autorka artykułu wskazuje zasady projektowania uniwersalnego, zgodnie z którymi należy planować proces dydaktyczny nauczania języka obcego uczniów z uszkodzeniami słuchu. Uwzględniając wewnętrzne zróżnicowanie tej grupy uczniów, powinno się zwrócić uwagę nie tylko na konieczność indywidualizacji w zakresie postępowania metodycznego, ale także form i metod pracy na lekcjach języka angielskiego i metod prezentacji materiału dydaktycznego przez nauczyciela lub innych uczniów. W celu optymalizacji odbioru i przekazu treści należy zadbać o zapewnienie odpowiednich, dostosowanych do możliwości percepcyjnych oraz realizacyjnych ucznia, warunków zewnętrznych. Zwraca się ponadto uwagę na różnorodność sposobów prezentowania wiedzy przez uczniów z uszkodzonym słuchem i tym samym brania przez nich czynnego udziału w lekcji. Autorka, dając propozycje dostosowań, podkreśla jednocześnie konieczność zadbania o to, aby materiał dydaktyczny zachował pełną wartość merytoryczną.
    Increasingly, deaf and hard-of-hearing students are attending mainstream and integrated schools. It is necessary to provide a number of adaptations, sometimes modifications, of the teacher’s instructional methods and forms for their education to be effective. The purpose of this article is to discuss the issue of adapting English as a Foreign Language classes in early elementary education to the needs of students with hearing impairments. Effective education in this area requires syllabuses, textbooks, and teaching resources that are developed in accordance with the principles of universal design for learning and then necessary adaptations and modifications that are planned on an individual basis following children’s needs and abilities. The author suggests the principles of universal design for learning according to which foreign language instruction for students with hearing impairments should be planned. Due to the internal diversity of this group of students, not only methodological procedures should be individualized but also instructional forms and methods used during English classes as well as the methods of presenting instructional materials by the teacher or other students. In order to optimize the reception and transmission of content, appropriate external conditions that are adapted to individual students’ perceptual and performance abilities need to be provided. Also, the diversity of ways in which students with hearing impairments present their knowledge and thus actively participate in classes is pointed out. Suggesting different adaptations, the author emphasizes the need to take care that instructional materials maintain their full substantive value.
