The Image of the Speaker in the Reviews by Henryk Sienkiewicz The aim of the article is to investigate the ways in which the speaker in the reviews by Henryk Sienkiewicz presents himself to the reader and to describe the roles he performs. The present analysis indicates that there is a correspondence between the image of the speaker and the type of the review. On the one hand, in case of reviews with a complex structure and a diverse illocutionary potential, i.e. academic reviews, polemical reviews which discuss and assess various aspects of the literary work, the speaker frequently assumes the roles of an expert, a connoisseur or a teacher, which often permeate and complement one another. On the other hand, reviews in the form of an overview or a summary usually feature a speaker-informer. Regardless of the genre, the speaker manifests his presence in the first-person plural forms and pronouns (my, nasz; Eng. we, our) and uses surprisingly few singular forms. What may explain the employment of the “my” (“we”) form as the plural of modesty is an attempt to make the text of the review seem more objective, while the inclusive “my” (“we”) serves persuasive purposes.

Polish Sign Language (PJM)
Opis:
Democratization of social life in Poland after political transformation of 1989 meant that people with disabilities, including the deaf began to participate in social life actively and demand the ability to use full rights of citizenship. Active presence in the public space requires a constant, uninterrupted communication. In order to improve communication it is necessary to teach the hearing ways to communicate they use to encourage the deaf and the hearing to acquire these skills. First of all, the so-called linguistic-sign system (SJM), which uses visual-spatial channel to communicate, is used for communication. Polish Sign Language (PJM) became an innovation in search for better communication between the hearing and the deaf since the first years of the 21st century. Dissemination of the Polish Sign Language (PJM) and teaching this language to the hearing gives more opportunities to communicate the deaf with the hearing. Skills of using Polish sign language are essential in everyday public life interactions in institutions of public administration and health services or places of culture.

Speech acts identification by the participants of interaction in public communication The purpose of this article is to analyze the public discourse in terms of speech acts identification by the participants of the interaction. The research material comes from two radio programs (“Radio Zet-Guest” and “The 7th Day of the Week”), in which a journalist interviews politicians. Political discourse is not a field of creating sincere speech acts, but rather a playground on which identifying speech acts is strategically important. The preinteraction is very important, which determines both the creation and perception of speech acts. This manifests itself in breaching the preferred communication behaviors, and instead using avoidance strategies. With the development of the discourse in time it becomes more and more authentic and discourse participants “truly” identify speech acts.

Dialogue is a necessary way of inhabiting a shared world. However, the concept of dialogue at present has become ambiguous and often abused. The purpose of this article is to introduce order into this conceptual ambiguity. Ferdinand de Saussure distinguished language (langue) from speech (parole), and following him, Paul Ricoeur wrote about discourse of the event. Here different concepts of dialogue begin. Dialogue understood as the communication, in which the accent is located in the discourse, argumentation serving to elaborate a consensus of action taken and dialogue understood as a meeting of persons. Two first concepts of dialogue are found in Jürgen Habermas’ communication theory and in Ricoeur’s dialogue led in the form of ‘hospitality lent by language’. If the essence of communication theory of Habermas is a discourse, then the essence of Ricoeur’s ‘hospitality lent by language’ is an understanding of others. The essence of the third concept of dialogue, also called the meeting, developed by twentieth-century philosophy of dialogue, are presence and love. There is also a fourth form of dialogue introduced by Georg Simmel, constituting a priori foundations of social life. For him a function or a social role is the centre. However, we can also find the fifth form of dialogue in dialogical hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer, trying to combine the discursive and personal dimensions. For him the centre is both the presence of other, as well as the truth happening in dialogue. All these conceptions of dialogue have important significance for pedagogy.

Opis:
Terminological lexis in ‘Vilnius Dictionary’ and handwritten lecture notes on agronomy from the mid-19th century. The plot of the article is conditioned by one of the basic issues in the field of philosophy of history, namely the question: to what extent a given dictionary, meeting the scientific requirements of the time of its origin, documents the complete state of lexis of a certain period. The detailed purpose of the article is to show similarities and differences between the ways in which notions and terms are registered and denoted in the lectures delivered in the Agronomic Institute of Marymont in the period of 1848-1850 and in Vilnius Dictionary, written only a bit later. Textual analysis has shown that this most thorough dictionary of its time could not, for number of reasons, document the actual state of terminological lexis. That observation has led to conclusion that the opinions on the state of terminological lexis which were expressed only on the basis of dictionaries had been formed much more carefully than it can be sometimes observed. These opinions are revised when the examples of language usage (specific texts) are taken into consideration.

Opis:
Application of step-method in conversation for research of media interaction on local level The goal of this article is to adjust research tool, such as step-method in conversation (originally created for colloquial conversation analysis) to explore public discourse. Political debate in the media has been choosen as a research material. Local level of dialog means investigating structure created by consecutive interlocutors. This is an effect of their cooperation, therefore regard and reference to utterance, common topic exploration. Medial interaction analysis showed differences between colloquial conversation and public debate in their organization and goal. Types of journalist’s steps named initial, steering and reacting constitute a structural skeleton for each of the segments. Leader’s organizational activities play an important part. He directs interlocutors’ activity to be in line with species requirements as well as with medial discourse. Controversial, beeing an expression of negative opinions, clear valuate and persuasive function content is picked up and exposed.

The aim of this article is to show the opportunities which new technologies offer in overcoming communication barriers in regards to people experiencing multiple disabilities. The solutions that new technologies bring can constitute one of the forms of resistance to the dominant model of perceiving disability and thus provide space for a particular resistance to the practices of discrimination and exclusion from the society of people experiencing disability, therefore entering into the emancipatory stream. Including the emancipation category into the emerging process of new technology allows us to create a broader theoretical context through which we can give it a new meaning - another dimension, i.e.: new technologies - emancipation ones: adopting such a vision gives new technology a technical dimension. By instilling the proposed position in the field of special education, we can contribute to the exploration of the potential that exists in every human-being regardless of the type or degree of specific disability.

The article presents the main elements from a discussion forum that examined the Internet as a genre from the perspective of linguistic genology. This genre is presented as a codified one, which meets technological requirements, accepted textual standards and norms of communication (netiquette, regulations). It is an asynchronous form, which operates in hypertextual mode, though oral elements can also be distinguished. The following elements are characteristic of Internet discussion forums: dialogic aspect, petrification of textual frame, thematic arrangements, colloquial character and a tendency to condense both form and content. The main purpose of Internet discussion forums is to present and share information and opinions.

Directions of development of modern telematic technologies (computer mediated communication, mobile telephone communication) change the human communication environment to such an extent that people treat these technologies as – in some way – an ”organic”, natural equipment of a human being. The Web, especially in its mobile version, has no longer any essential barriers. This has consequences in the way of treatment of a communication act with another person (or a group): the sense of limits and barriers, which accompanied the communication via the traditional media, disappears gradually. This article is an attempt to conceptualize this new experience, crucial in developing the anthropology of the Internet, which thus ceases to be the ”medium” and – according to the ideas of Marshall McLuhan – turns out to be an extension of the human senses

Following Niklas Luhmann, the author assumes that communication creates social systems. The system therefore influences the nature of communication. The impact of rhetoric on media discourse can be understood as a result of the strategy adopted by the system. What follows from the above assumption is a discussion of the notion of truth which is fundamental to media philosophy. Systems, in their adopted strategies, affect the media and use persuasion in a way that is remote from the treatment of the truth as an idea or as a condition of an ethical nature.

The article is devoted to the problem of human relationships with special attention paid to the experience of helplessness, powerlessness and social anxiety in contacts with other people. The problem is described from the existential-psychological and social-cultural perspective. At first the author presents the essence and reasons for feeling helpless and anxious in the psychological context. Then various aspects of human alienation in contemporary culture are enumerated. In the second part of the article the author discusses the category of usefulness and utility in thinking about oneself and other people, the alienation of language and loss of the so-called “individual initiative”. Theoretical considerations have been supplemented with the results of the author’s own research. At the end of the article the author indicates the role of education in preventing the development of helplessness among young people.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to compare the formal organization of a visual message with the rhetorical devices used in a verbal message. This analysis is carried out based on the example of the sculpture Dual by Zbigniew Władyka. The creativity found in the rhetorical devices used in the sculpture Dual to trigger and amplify feelings proves that they can be employed even in this form of artistic expression. Creativity in the analysed sculpture is represented by German reunification, reflected in the form of the transformation of two characters into one. The sculpture is meant to inspire, to be an object (res) directing the viewer toward personal reflection, and invoking projections of fear and doubt, but also of confidence and courage. Confidence and courage are represented by a strong figure with a head, firmly standing on its feet. Fear and doubt are represented by a weak figure, carried by the first one. The centripetal composition used in the sculpture suggests merger rather than destruction. The sensory perception of the viewer is controlled by directional tensions, which lead the viewer’s sight along designated linear directions. As described earlier by Witkiewicz, directional tensions and motionless substance correspond to a rhetorical enlarging and diminishing. By interacting with the sculpture, you can experience these devices. Not only visualization is at work here, as in verbal communication, but also physical experience. The presented analysis shows that a sculptural work of art can be analysed in a similar way to verbal communication. Of course, not all verbal devices have their counterparts in visual communication, but the basic content and emotions can be expressed regardless of the code.
