Opis:
Summary The aim of this article is to proceed the analysis of the meaning of saints’ and relics’ cult in the military victories of the Piasts, from the 10th to the beginnings of the 13th century. To create a solid political community in Christian Europe it was crucial for a ruler to assure the saints’ protection and convince the subjects about their favorable intercession. The stories about the miracles beneficial for the Piasts shows to themselves and to their subjects that the rulers were chosen by God, who approves their proceedings. The Piasts became beneficiaries of the miracles due to the proper worshipping of the saints and their relics and in response to their Christianization activity. Using the descriptions of the saints’ miraculous support in battles in the texts written for the Piasts as an argument legitimizing and sacralizing their rule is a sign of the early reception and understanding the role of the cult of saints in the ideology of power.

Opis:
Priest Zbigniew Piasecki (1916-2011) is one of the most distinguished authors of religious songs in Poland after the Second Vatican Council. His rich composer oeuvre includes songs devoted to Saint Andrew Bobola, the patron of Poland. These works exist in manuscripts form only. They have never been published. Not only is the Composer himself mentioned in this article, but also the profile of Saint Andrew’s and his cult. The presentation of songs in honour of St. Andrew Bobola constitutes the essential part of the study. In the first part the melody aspect was analysed where the kinds of melodies and intervallic scale are covered. Then the rhythmicity is discussed and sources for melody are pointed out. Finally the lyrics of particular works are analysed. The repertoire of songs in honour of Saint Andrew Bobola presented in this work proves the cult of Saint Martyr still exists in Poland. Priest Piasecki’s work significantly enriched a number of songs devoted to the Saint patron of Poland. What is more, these songs can be used during the celebration of Eucharistic Liturgy on the Day of St. Andrew Bobola as well as during other services in honour of the Saint Patron of Poland. The author hopes that this work will contribute to their popularization in Polish church repertoire.

Religious rituals of the worship of the saints are transferred to cyber- space, where the simultaneous takes process of creating a new virtu- al rituals. Traditional worshipers replace saints fan who treat patrons more like religious idols than helpers. They want that gave meaning to their faith, and not just begging for the salvation. For network follow- ers count more personal experience than the needs of the Community. These in turn are more focused on new functionalities: rituals to inte- grate new practices than traditional rites. Is changed into the narrative: the church newspeak replaces the message of a more secular content. For the faithful more important it is what has happened with the saints in everyday life, than what is one of the miracles of life. The future of virtual worship patrons depends on finding common ground between decision-making centers in the Church and hagiology blogosphere in terms of the nature of the network of pastoral care.

Opis:
Artykuł został poświęcony okolicznościom powstania kultu św. Teodozego, ihumena klasztoru kijowsko-peczerskego. Wówczas to metropolita kijowski Nikifor I, na polecenie księcia Świętopełka i prośby ówczesnego ihumena klasztoru peczerskiego Teoktysta, wpisał imię Teodozego do Syondyku, oficjalnie zaliczając go do grona świętych Kościoła Rusi Kijowskiej.
The article depicts the circumstances of the origin of the cult of St. Theodosius, ihumen of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. The text analyzes the preserved sources (The Tale of Bygone Years, The Kie- Pechersk Patericon) concerning the events of the translation of Theodosius' remains to the monastery church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, which, in the opinion of many researchers, gave rise to the cult of the saint. The examination of this issue allows for a thesis that the events of 1091 could have resulted from prosaic reasons – the right of ihumen to be buried in the monastery church as well as the fact that he was one of the initiators of the construction of the temple. The textological observations also make it possible to question the chronology of events related to the formation of the cult of Theodosius, as presented in the Tale of Bygone Years, which was based on the Life of St. Theodore the Studite, as can be assumed. The beginning of the cult of St. Theodosius was associated with cultural changes, whose first symptoms can be observed in Ruthenia in the first decade of the 12th century. At that time, the Metropolitan of Kiev, Nikifor I, entered the name of Theodosius in Sinodik, officially including him among the saints of the Church of Kievan Rus.

Opis:
In Christian religious consciousness, especially in Eastern Christianity, Andrew the Apostle has a place equal to that of his brother, Peter the Apostle. This article presents the information gathered about him and provided by the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. It also concisely describes the apocrypha about his missionary activities in Greece, Pontus, Thrace and Scythia, as well as the sources and reasons behind the development of his cult in Europe, including the Slavic nations. The origin of the given name Andrew is also included, along with the process of this name becoming common among the Slavs connected with the spread of the cult. The article stresses the importance of the transformation of the original image of this saint caused by the contamination of Christian beliefs and Slavic folk culture. The analysis of Polish calendar proverbs enabled to present the linguistic image of St. Andrew. Folk religious rites connected with his cult, which emerged as the result of intertwining of the Christian calendar and agricultural cycle, are also described. The saints to whom certain days in the Christian calendar were dedicated, started to be perceived as the guardians of these days, protecting people from the forces of nature, as well as the protectors of certain trades. The profiles of selected local Christian saints bearing the name Andrew are also presented.

Opis:
First names given to children depend on many factors: ethnic background, religion, geographic location, societal status or time period. This article deals with the name-giving pattern and its evolution in peasant families during the period 1757-1809 in four villages within the realm of the parish of Fajsławice in the Lublin Region. The four villages in question were: Fajsławice, Siedliska, Suchodoły and Wola Idzikowska. At the beginning of the period under analysis, the pool of baptismal names was rather small: only 33 different male and 26 female names were used. The distribution of these names was hardly homogenous: 8.3% of all boys were named Wojciech, 19.8% of girls – Marianna, while some other names were used only once. A similar pattern was also observed in the other regions of Poland at that time. In order to identify what motivated parents as regards name selection, a few factors have been investigated: birth near the patron saint day, name inheritance from parents, and inspiration from the local cult of saints. The statistical analysis of the annual distribution of given names over the first 13 years of the parish’s existence proved to be most strongly affected by the date of birth: 95.8% of all boys were given the name of a saint, whose patron date was in the period of 4 weeks before or 4 weeks after the boy’s birth date; 81.6% for those who were born two weeks before or one week after the patron date. In most cases, the name was selected after a patron whose day was after the birth date. For girls’ names, the effect of the birth date on the baptismal name was slightly weaker, but still dominant: 86.9% of all girls born during the period between 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after the saint day received the name of the patroness. The analysis has also shown that the children’s names were practically not affected by the parents’ names or the names of a parish patron saint. The same name was given to siblings only if the previous one had died. In the period of 50 years under analysis, the naming pattern underwent a significant change: 76 new names were introduced (44 for boys and 32 for girls). Practically all of them followed the calendar rule, but the crucial role in their selection was played by the parish priests: some of them were more conservative and introduced practically no new names; some others were very creative, although some of the names they suggested did not stay in the pool of active names for a long time. The tradition of giving two names was not very significant, but, some parish priests tended to give double names more often than others. Many new names, both single and double ones, were inspired by new saints canonized in the 17th and the 18th century, especially those, who were Jesuits.

Opis:
The cult of saints has been developing very vividly since the beginning of Christianity. It is expressed in three forms: veneratio – worship of the saints; imitatio – imitation of the example of their lives; invocatio – invocation of their intercession, which always leads to the Father glorified in his saints. This is most fully done in the liturgy, and thus also in the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, it was important to prepare the texts and melodies for the Liturgy of the Hours, renewed after the Second Vatican Council, which included liturgical memories, feasts and feasts of the Lord’s saints and common texts on saints. The constitutive element of the two basic canonical hours, Matins and Vespers, apart from reading, psalmody and prayer, are the hymns, the texts of which had to be reviewed and prepared according to the rules developed by the specially created Cœtus VII Study Group. The full set of hymns in the post-conciliar Liturgy of the Hours reached an unprecedented number of 291 songs. Most of the hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours were translated into Polish by P. Galiński. Of course, according to the recommendations of the Congregation of Rites, after the publication of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Polish language, it was necessary to make every effort to arrange appropriate melodies for it, especially for the parts intended by nature for singing, such as hymns. This article analyses the texts and melodies of the hymns about saints for the two most important canonical hours: Matins and Vespers, published in Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, edited by s. J. M. Bujalska PDDM and s. M. D. Nowak PDDM. It was published in 2012 on the initiative of the Disciples of the Divine Master. In addition to the liturgical hymns, the collection discussed here also includes church songs about saints, which can be performed in place of the hymn. The review and analysis of the hymns on saints led to the conclusion that not all the rules of a well composed hymn, developed by Cœtus VII, were applied in the hymn texts on saits, published in the Polish edition of the Book Liturgy of the Hours. In turn, the presentation of compositions about saints included in the collection Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, showed a huge richness of forms and musical styles that they represent. On the one hand, it revealed strong references to romantic folk songs and a strong attachment to diatonic scales, which are characteristic of Polish liturgical work. On the other hand, it revealed the attempts of composers to refer to contemporary music stylistics. All this gives a wide spectrum of views on contemporary liturgical work and allows us to set new paths for its development.
