The article relates to the issue of training candidates for the teacher profession. By referencing to the core of the competencies required for the teacher’s work in a changing school, the weakest areas, which are the source of the fear and anxiety of students completing teacher education, were identified. The sources of fears, as well as proposals for changes in education to the teaching profession, were compiled on the basis of research conducted among 187 candidates of the profession of teacher studying at universities in Malopolska (Lesser Poland Voivodeship).

In this paper, I present the teacher training system in Poland. I point out the existing shortcomings in their education from the perspective of teachers already working in the profession. Finally, I presents the latest proposals for changes of teacher education implemented by Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Kształcenie nauczycieli przedszkoli zajmuje w polskim systemie edukacyjnym ważne miejsce. Zmiany w obrębie instytucjonalnych form kształcenia nauczycieli dokonywały się przez wiele lat w sposób złożony i często zależny od polityki oświatowej państwa. Wszystkim modyfikacjom przyświecała myśl stworzenia modelu nauczyciela małych dzieci, który kształciłby w oparciu o samodzielność, refleksyjność i kreatywność.
Education of kindergarten teachers takes an important part of Polish educational system. Changes in the institutional forms of teachers’ education have been introduced for many years in a complex way and were often dependent on the education policy of the country. Each modification served the purpose of creating a model of a teacher working with small children who would educate them on the basis of independence, reflectiveness and creativity.

This paper is first of all informative. In the first section, it gives a survey of innovative Master Studies for European secondary teachers, being prepared by an international team from eight countries. Among five main training areas, there are Intercultural Studies, which are to be implemented in another country during a mobility semester. The second section of the paper describes briefly four intercultural modules developed in the EMETTStudies: Education systems in the European Union, Intercultural communication,Selected aspects of European culture and Intercultural education.The third part of the paper gives an example of the teaching material which can be used to raise students’ intercultural awareness. The material is based on a literary text made into a contemporary play, focused on the universal theme of a journey, set in the Polish Tatra Mts. The author of the paper shows how such a material can combine elements of three intercultural modules: Intercultural education, Intercultural communication and Selected aspects of European culture. Finally, the paper points out the role of a language of international communication in the implementation of EMETTStudies during the mobility semester.

During the political changes in Vilnius County, i.e. in the territory of the Second Polish Republic (1922–1926) with the capital in Vilnius, after 1914 the Polish society hoped for full acceptance of educational institutions, operating illegally before the outbreak of WWI. Despite significant difficulties created by the German occupier, Polish education – both general and secondary – was organized. It was mean feat primarily due to the lack of teachers. In the early 20th century, two schools preparing for the teaching profession operated in Vilnius: the Nazareth Sisters and an institution organized by Agata Karpowiczówna. Recognizing the need to educate teachers, a school for women named after Queen Jadwiga was founded in 1916, and soon afterwards the Education Committee established five more schools. Meanwhile, junior and senior high schools were also established in Vilnius. On the basis of archival research carried out by the authors of the article in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive in Vilnius, numerous applications and biographies of candidates for educators, primarily in the Vilnius area, were collected and presented. This documentation is diverse as it consists of surveys regarding personal data and the course of work, applications handwritten by the candidates, opinions of former superiors but also correspondence on the basis of which. the candidate’s studies and work can be reconstructed. The above-mentioned documentation comes from 1919–1923 i.e. a period of slow stabilization of education in the area in question.

Substantive preparation but also the beliefs and attitudes of prospective professionals to important social issues are essential for their later work in the education sector. One such important social and educational problems is peer violence at school. The article presents the results of a study aimed at understanding the attitudes of students of Pedagogy (teaching specialization, N = 267) toward bullying in schools, its different types and ways of coping with it. The episodes (vignette) method was used in the study. Based on the data obtained, it can be stated that in preparing prospective teachers, particular attention must be paid to relational (hidden) violence and verbal violence. Further findingsand implications are formulated in the text.

W artykule podjęto próbę analizy uwarunkowań systemowego wsparcia doskonalenia zawodowego w polskim systemie oświaty. Omówiono podstawy prawne systemu doskonalenia zawodowego nauczycieli oraz elementy tworzące ten system w Polsce. Ukazano tendencje rozwojowe systemu zarówno w obszarze zdobywania kwalifikacji przez nauczycieli, jak i doskonalenia posiadanej już wiedzy i umiejętności. Podkreślono specyfikę pracy nauczycieli w aspekcie zmian społeczno-gospodarczych i konieczność ciągłego doskonalenia się. Przeprowadzono analizę wyników badań w obszarze potrzeb edukacyjnych środowiska oświatowego w aspekcie preferencji dotyczących form doskonalenia zawodowego w ramach funkcjonowania powiatowej publicznej placówki doskonalenia nauczycieli, co pozwoliło wskazać tendencje i preferencje nauczycieli w obszarze doskonalenia zawodowego.
The article attempts to analyze the conditions of the systemic implementation of professional development in the Polish education system. The legal basis of the teacher training system and the elements of this system in Poland were discussed. The development trends of the system were shown both in the area of gaining qualifications by teachers and improving the knowledge and skills already possessed. The specificity of teachers’ work in the aspect of socio-economic changes and the need for continuous improvement were emphasized. An analysis of the research in the area of educational needs of the educational environment was carried out in the aspect of preferences regarding the forms of in-service training within the functioning of the poviat public teacher training institution, which allowed to indicate the tendencies and preferences of teachers in the area of in-service training.

W artykule przedstawiono pokrótce specyfikę kraju, a także systemu oświaty, zwracając szczególną uwagę na edukację przedszkolną oraz początkowy etap edukacji szkolnej (klasy 1–7). Celem artykułu jest omówienie systemu kształcenia nauczycieli edukacji elementarnej w Islandii. Niniejsza charakterystyka została przygotowana głównie w oparciu o raporty Eurydice dostępne w Internecie, ofertę dwóch islandzkich szkół wyższych oraz obowiązujące w Islandii akty prawne. Jak pokazała przeprowadzona analiza, system kształcenia nauczycie- li jest zbliżony do systemu obowiązującego w Polsce. By zostać nauczycielem edukacji elementarnej, należy ukończyć dwustopniowe studia pedagogiczne i zdobyć tytuł zawodowy magistra. Dokonując porównania między programami na studiach pedagogicznych pro- wadzonych w Polsce i w Islandii, należy zwrócić uwagę na fakt, że w przypadku Islandii większą wagę przywiązuje się do studenckich praktyk (szczególnie na Uniwersytecie w Akureyri) oraz do zajęć korespondujących z aktualnymi problemami, z którymi mierzy się świat – w programach studiów pojawiają się przedmioty związane z tematyką równouprawnienia oraz gender, edukacją inkluzyjną, współpracą z rodzicami czy zarządzaniem klasą.
In the article, the author presents the specific characteristics of the country and its education system, especially pre-school and early school education (grades 1 to 7). The aim of this article is to describe the Icelandic system of training elementary education teachers. The description is mainly based on Eurydice reports which are available in the internet, as well as on the academic offer of two Icelandic universities and the country’s legal acts. The analysis shows that the Icelandic system of educating teachers is similar to the one in Poland: to become a teacher of elementary education, student has to complete two-stage pedagogical studies and obtain a master’s degree. It should be noticed that during pedagogical studies in Iceland students’ practice at schools is very important (especially at the University of Akureyri). Also, Icelandic universities focus on classes that are connected with various problems of the modern world (e.g., equality, gender, inclusive education, cooperation with parents, class management).

The article concerns the psychological skills of Polish language teachers. It indicates the need for teachers to develop psychological skills due to the specifics of the subject and frequent conversations on psychologically difficult topics. The analysis distinguishes three implications for school practice: the first relates to the new organization of the teaching process by enabling students to take individual conversations about the psychological consequences of the readings, the second discusses the personality traits of the teacher, helpful in psychological conversations, and the third proposes practical classes in psychological skills that could help shape soft skills of Polish language teachers.

Being a reflective teacher is a highly appreciated quality of a good teacher. Reflection is considered to be essential in the job of teaching since it prompts to modify and improve the process of teaching and learning. As experts suggest reflective skills can be practiced and developed due to various teacher education models, programs and techniques. One of the techniques is a teacher portfolio that can consist of many tasks provoking teachers and teacher-trainees to reflect on their teaching. This article presents some research on the content of English teacher-trainees’ reflection and their metareflection. The research outcome provides some knowledge of what they reflect upon, if they do at all, and whether they perceive reflection as valuable in the process of learning teaching.

Krajoznawstwo odgrywa ważną rolę w życiu społeczeństwa, sprzyja bowiem w wychowywaniu młodzieży oraz pozwala na kształtowanie pożądanych jej postaw. Jednak, aby edukacja krajoznawcza mogła spełniać swoje funkcje, niezbędna jest dobrze przygotowana kadra pedagogiczna, z zamiłowaniem do poznawania kraju ojczystego. Ze względu na liczne powiązania krajoznawstwa z wymaganiami zawartymi w podstawach programowych z geografii i historii, to właśnie nauczyciele tych przedmiotów odgrywają najważniejszą rolę w edukacji krajoznawczej młodzieży. Dotychczasowe badania wykazały niestety istotne braki w krajoznawstwie szkolnym, czego powodem może być brak kompleksowego przygotowania przyszłych nauczycieli w tym zakresie. W artykule wykorzystano metodę analizy dokumentów. Dokonano więc przeglądu planów studiów dla kierunków geografia oraz historia na uczelniach publicznych, umożliwiających uzyskanie uprawnień nauczycielskich celem sprawdzenia, czy w toku kształcenia został uwzględniony kurs krajoznawstwa lub kursy o zbliżonej tematyce. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały znaczne ograniczenia w możliwości zdobywania wiedzy z zakresu metod i sposobów przekazu wiedzy krajoznawczej na studiach nauczycielskich.
Heritage tourism (krajoznawstwo) plays an important role in the life of society, being conducive to the upbringing of young people and allows for shaping the desired attitudes. However, to fulfill its functions heritage tourism education, needs well-prepared teaching staff with a passion for getting to know the mother country. Due to the numerous connections between heritage tourism and the requirements contained in the core curricula for geography and history, teachers of these subjects play the most important role in the heritage tourism education of young people. However, the research carried out so far indicates significant gaps in school tourism, probably because the lack of comprehensive preparation of future teachers in this area. The autor has used method of document analysis. A review of the curricula of studies in the fields of geography and history at public universities enabling the acquisition of teaching qualifications was carried out, in which it was checked whether the field of study tourism or similar subjects were included in the course of education. The research showed significant barriers in the acquiring knowledge in the field of methods and ways of transferring knowledge about heritage tourism during thuse pedagogical studies.

In the paper, apart from interpreting the message of films: Carrie (directed by Brian De Palma), Over the Edge (directed by Jonathan Kaplan) and Elephant (directed by Gus Van Sant), I also describe how classes can be arranged around them. Thus, I join the debate on the space for such productions in education, especially in the methodology for training teachers-to-be. I indicate possible applications of feature films and a wide spectrum of benefits that follow from this approach. In fact, movies are still an undervalued but very effective didactic tool that engages pupils in authentic intellectual tasks that deal with important content and issues.

The Slovak education is currently experiencing a turbulent period associated with ongoing efforts to reform the education system, under-funding of education with low teacher salaries, overworked and feminized teaching staff, low social status of a teacher in society, problems in the creation and distribution of current textbooks, insufficient interest in studying natural sciences, leaving of young people to study abroad, etc. This situation is also reflected in the training of future teachers including the geography teachers (in combination with other subjects). The aim of this study is to provide basic information on the development of future geography teacher education in Nitra, which has almost a 60-year tradition. Moreover, it characterizes the current state of this education in the context of the subject field didactics and pedagogical practice and identifies the challenges of their future preparation. Methods of text analysis, information comparison, and statistical processing of quantitative information were used in this study. Key findings include the dynamics of the number of graduates from geography teaching study programs, responding to the situation in education system and demographic decline in the population, and reduction of contact lessons at the university leading to a reduction in the professional and didactic extent of knowledge and skills of future teachers. The most important conclusions or recommendations as well as scientific contribution concern the necessity to change the attitude of teachers towards the practically oriented teaching with stronger emphasis on training students’ creativity not only through ICT, but also using creative and critical thinking strategies.
