Opis:
This article spans the period from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages. It presents the history of pre- and post- war history of research carried out on the territory of the present-day commune of Szadek, and a short review of the history of settlement in this region with a list of archaeological sites in the area. The earliest archaeological works were conducted there in the second half of the 19th century, when a cinerary-urn cemetery was found in the “Old Town” and amateur-archaeologists made discoveries in the neighbourhood of Piaski. A particularly interesting excavation site is in Przyrownica (Wola Łobudzka) with a Przeworsk culture cemetery, which was functioning for about 200 years.

Opis:
Plant remains collected on the multicultural archaeological site 2 at Zagórze, originated from features of the Linear Pottery, Lengyel and Malice Cultures dated to the Neolithic, the Lusatian Culture from the III or IV period of the Bronze Age, the Tyniec Culture from the La Tène period, and the Puchov Culture from the Roman period. For several features chronology and/or culture were not recognized. The recovered material included charred and uncharred fruits/seeds, wood charcoal and rare impressions in daub. Uncharred diaspores were considered intrusions from younger layers and were ignored in the interpretation of the results. The results obtained for features from different time were of uneven value. Plant remains found in the Linear Pottery culture features included single grains of barley, emmer wheat, bread wheat, and rye and numerous grains of common millet. Wild herbs (about 17 species) belonged to field and ruderal weeds. Anthracological spectrum was dominated by oak and pine, birch, alder, and hazel were relatively frequent, while hornbeam, fir, beech and maple were represented by single specimens. Possible contamination of the samples by the younger intrusions including bread wheat, rye, and common millet as well as hornbeam and beech was discussed. Plant material recovered from features of the early phase of the Lusatian culture dated to the Bronze Age (Table 5) was of special interest because hitherto only very scanty archaeobotanical data were available for that period in Poland. Among the cereals, common millet grains were the most abundant, single grains belonged to barley, emmer and bread wheat. Millet was often found in large quantities on the Lusatian culture sites dated to the Hallstatt period, the now available data support the view that the spread of millet cultivation began already in the Bronze Age and this species became one of the most important cereals at the transition to the Iron Age. The richest plant material was found in the Puchov culture features dated to the Roman Period. People of this culture cultivated different cereals, among which millet and emmer were the most common, less abundant were barley, rye, bread wheat, oat, and spelt wheat.

Coins are not only a means of payment, but also a means of cultural communication. Both their obverses and reverses contain epigraphic and iconographic elements that together create an image. Among the iconographic elements, there are motifs understood as a repeating decorative element, but also as an expression of a certain type of idea. Archaeological motifs reflect their form of archaeological monuments or their elements, while their subject matter commemorates not only the monument itself, but also various related aspects researched by archaeologists. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating archaeological heritage. The presented prehistoric and early medieval motifs appearing on European coins in the years 1992–2022 were first analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological themes with which these motifs are connectedwere taken into account, and on this basis axiological considerations were possible, aimed at answering the question – why a given motif was placed on the coin.

Opis:
The ways of interpreting prehistoric burial grounds were modified several times within last decades. However, still dominant is the approach in which the most important is to document well, to systemize and to specify grave findings. The present paper considers the researches emphasizing the space relations in the burial ground area as well as the interrelations between ritual structures situated there. The grounds, in historical depiction, were analysed on the basis of the following methods: cultural evolutionism, positivism, structuralism, and also hermeneutics and phenomenology. Gradually, the attention was paid to the new research problems: distances between graves, directions of the burial grounds’ development, establishing their inner and outer boundaries, settlement of ritual structures (hearths, funeral pyres, concentration of pottery and stones) and the tradition of using the space of burial grounds in later historical periods. The conclusions presented in the paper show that the biography of archaeological structures, such as burial grounds, is initiated in primeval history but is completed by other generations of observers and researchers of those relics. Their space „text” is unceasingly read and interpreted.

During the survey on site 20 at Bnin, 69 animal remains were found. They came from settlement of both the Lusatian culture, the Przeworsk culture and from early Middle Ages. During the archaeozoologic analysis, the features of the Lusatian culture contained only the remains of ruminants: cattle (21 fr.), sheep and goat (2 fr.). In the features dated back to the settlement of the Przeworsk culture 4 fr. cattle bone were found. In early-medieval osteologic materials 17 fr. remains of cattle and pigs were observed and two bones of a little ruminant. The condition of preservation and low frequency did not enable sex, age and morphology analysis. Goat’s bones contained typical traces of consumption processing (cuts, burning) and utility (awl).

The aim of the research was to outline the theoretical map of ideological references used by this young, still developing field. In order to understand the complex interdisciplinary nature of the archeoacoustic approach, ideological concepts were indicated and described, which, starting from various research assumptions, reflected on the role and methods of the impact of the sound in culture.

Opis:
The article discusses an issue of intertextuality of “pictures” in Palaeolithic art, and colour as its constituent. An important concept in these regards appeared to be that of an open and interdisciplinary approach towards an image, derived from the anthropology of images. In my opinion, essential is an “acting” of an image, based on so called “interimaginal relations”. It is legitimate when referring to prehistory, as numerous images reveal interpenetrating traces of other representations. Either consciously or unconsciously, some solutions had been used repeatedly, copying other representations, including selection of colours as a kind of stereotype deeply rooted in cultural memory. In cave “pictures” there were one or two main colours used, rarely three or even four. It has been acknowledged that the most important features of Palaeolithic “pictures” were movement, colour, especially expressed by a contrast of black and red or yellow, and also an illusion. They were also interrelated with a sound. The world of colours of contemporary people was a significant constituent of cultural meanings and of images “acting” in “mediatisation” of important existential contents between past and present.

The paper focuses on the history of the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art at the Imperial Castle in Poznan. It functioned between 1923 and 1929, being a short episode but an important one in the history of the Archdiocesan Museum in Poznań. Formerly a Diocesan Museum, it was established in 1898 with an exquisite collection of sacred art assembled over the years. However, due to the lack of exhibition space the collection was only stored and not many people knew about   it.Shortly after Poland regained its independence, Poznan's elite wanted to partially convert the imperial castle (built by the Prussians for William II, German Emperor) into a museum of Polish art. The Government asked the Church to deposit their art collection and granted the city permission to open the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art at the Imperial Castle in Poznan. The proposition was accepted. The two people nominated to carry out this enterprise were: Rev. Edmund Majkowski, the museum's director, and Mr. Nikodem Pajzderski, art conservation official. With great effort they created a very interesting exhibition. Unfortunately, the Government did not show much interest in the newly opened museum and did not fulfill its promises. Investments were close to nothing and with time the whole project was abandoned and the collection removed from the  castle.

The aim of the paper is to present the results of a typological and chronological analysis of movable finds obtained during excavations at site no. 20 in Przemyśl in the years 2005–2007. The site covers the area located directly on the west side of the cathedral church, around the building of the former Cathedral School at the Cathedral Square. Due to the location of the site on the eastern side of the castle hill in the vicinity of the Romanesque rotunda of St. nicholas, this site is an important research point with reference to Przemyśl. The remains of intensive open settlement were exposed at this site in the form of residential and utility features in two phases: 1. Roman influence (phase B2–C2) and 2. early Middle Ages (between the second half of the 10th or the beginning of the 11th and the end of the 12th century). The immovable features together with the initial report were published after the completion of the research in 2006 and 2007. It was noted that after using the open settlement, an earth rampart was built here, in which six subsequent phases were distinguished. The early Middle Ages ceramic material was the only type of artefacts that were discovered in the subsequent six phases of the earth rampart. On the basis of some characteristics – technology, ornamentation or rim shapes, an attempt was made to determine the chronology of piling up successive layers of the rampart. The material in all layers is similar and it can be dated to the 11th–13th century. Therefore, the rampart was probably created from the end of the 12th or 13th century. A large collection of Modern period pottery sherds was obtained from the mound of the youngest 6th phase of the rampart, which was established as the period from the end of the 16th to the 1st half of the 17th century.

The study was aimed at anthropogenization processes of the Kościan Plain. They are noticeable in local palynological diagrams (eg. at the archaeological site in Bruszczewo) as well as on settlement maps of the Polish Archaeological Record Project. The goal was to determine whether the processes were perceptible also in a regional scale, in deposits of the biggest water body in the examined area, located 15 km to the east from Bruszczewo. Anthropogenic participation in changes of plant cover is clearly visible in the local diagram from Bruszczewo. While compared with the mentioned, anthropogenic influence in deposits of Wonieść Lake is rather inconspicuous. In the Neolithic and Early Bronze Periods, percentage of herbaceous plants (amount of grasses and herbs) maintained the level of 10%. Increase in NAP is marked not earlier than in the Roman Iron Age, and then from the Early Middle Ages until the present time (Dörfler, to be published soon). Comparison of palynological results to sedimentological analyses indicates that periods of increased values of CerealiaandPlantago lanceolataindices are correlated with inflow of mineral material to lacustrine water body. Larger fractions were observed there i.e. fine- and medium-grained sands, and even gravels as well as organic matter. In the geochemical record for the same periods, an increased percentage of trace elements can be visible (however their distinctive escalation is manifested not earlier than in the Middle Ages). These changes are accompanied by intensified eutrophication index (phosphorus percentage) as well as by occurrence of diatoms, which prefer eutrophic conditions.

Przedstawiono zasadnicze etapy ewolucji i rozwoju doliny Rawki w Rawie Mazowieckiej, a także relacje punktów osadniczych rozpoznanych okresów chronologicznych z elementami morfologicznymi doliny. Wykonano szacunki rozmiarów potencjalnej populacji, która była w stanie uzyskać dostateczną ilość produkcji roślinnej w warunkach pradziejowej gospodarki rolnej.
Paper presents results of research on morphologic conditions of location of two archaeological sites in Rawa Mazowiecka in the Rawka River valley. Settlement uncovered at sites is dated to the Prehistory and to the Historic Times with main chronologic phase dated to the Late Pre-Roman Period and the Early Roman Period. Sites were located on the sandy and sandy-silty areas of the Plenivistulian terrace in a very close vicinity of flood plain. Surface occupied by settle-ments were very slightly inclined – no more than 3 °, usually ca. 1 °. It is significant a location of settlements complex in the area offering a high geodiversity. The mine stages of evolution and development of the Rawka River valley in Rawa Ma-zowiecka are presented and also relation between settlements of recognised chronologic periods and morphologic elements of the valley. The estimation of size of the highest population, which could produce sufficient quantity of plant food in the pre-historic economy condition was undertaken.

Mesopotamia, whose origins date back to prehistoric times, is considered to be the oldest civilization. In spite of many serious gaps in the research material, the scientific research suggests that there are quite surprising solutions regarding the links between law and religion. The first legal regulations in the Sumerians are connected with the development of cities and leadership, clearly set in their religious beliefs. The institution of a king, appointed in this civilization quite early, is understood as an intermediary between the divine and the human world. This does not, however, equate religion with politics, as it is evidenced by the legal regulations in Mesopotamia. The king who is a law representative is not a representative of the deity. The established norms mean that he does not treat the subordinates as coming from god. It proves the separation between the Sumerian politics and religion. They are not yet aware of the consequences of this distinction, as it is evidenced by their inconsistency in terms of sanctions. By establishing the penalty for disobedience against the law he creates, the king refers to the deity, which in this way, without being a source of law, is treated as its protection.
