    The qualification – poem ‘To the king’ is a panegyric - it is conditioned not so much by the text of Krasicki’s pen, but by views of the last king of the Commonwealth and on the positions of researchers of the past. For the so-called panegyric lever can be used as one of the tools of poetic analysis. ‘To the king’, at least indirectly, they are indicative through their initial words: “the higher, the more visible”. What then is the relationship between Krasicki’s poem and the tradition depicted by the Old Polish royal panegyric with its nine mechanisms of the so-called “ panegyric leverage? Only one of them is fully and simultaneously innovatively taken – this is the “factual” force of the interpretation of facts. The poem ‘The king’ can be read as such a selected set of prerequisites, of which arguments can be selected for the compliant or reprehensible attitudes of supporters and opponents of Stanislas Augustus.     The paper is concerned with the transformation of laudatory motives in the epithalamia, from the earliest extant Greek texts, through the nuptial poetic pieces by Catullus, Statius and Claudianus, down to the wedding poetry from the 16th century. Both, the ancient Greek poets, and Catullus as well, used to introduce the motive of praise with a dose of restraint. In other words, the early Greek and Roman poets were focused on the newly married couple. On the contrary, since the Roman Imperial period, it was intended to make the poetic praise more universal and so the poets used to extend the passages with laudatory motives. Therefore, other topics were added, such as the origin of the spouse and the bridegroom. Henry Moller as a poet was quite excessive in the matter of praise. Frankly speaking, his poetry praises everyone and everything: for instance, family members, both those who died not long ago, and those who are alive (epithalamium for Casper Nefelius and Sophia, Nicolaus Richavius’s daughter); the duchy of Baden and the city of Gdańsk (Gratulatio Musarum Gedanensium for Swedish princess Cecilia Vasa and prince Christopher II of Baden); even Jagiellonian king Sigismund II Augustus once became the object of praise, because he was a brother of the female addressee of the poem entitled Auleum Gratiarum (besides, Moller interlaced some political suggestions to the Jagiellonian ruler with the verses). It seems typical to Neo-Latin poets to insert the words of praise in the mouth of fictional characters. However, it is evident that the poetic self-esteem was not an unimportant factor. Over time, the authors of Neo-Latin poetry got used to speaking directly to the reader. Some of them were evident and eager flatterers. In general, we can observe that the epithalamic laudatory motives are in constant transformation. Every epoch, or even culture, has its own inventory of laudatory topics and objects.

    Two Latin poets of late antiquity, Claudian and Sidonius Apollinaris, included in their verse panegyrics short descriptions of diplomatic journey to Persia. The first mentioned the mission of Stilicho himself in “Panegyric on the consulate of Stilicho” (400 AD), whereas the latter described the mission of Procopius, father of the honorand in the “Panegyric on the consulate of Anthemius” (468 AD). Since Sidonius was in many ways imitator of Claudian, these pieces show a great deal of similarity both in content and form (especially in wording). However, closer scrutiny enables us to discover some differences in the treatment of Oriental topics as well as in general attitude to the praised heroes. Such an analysis allows us an insight into the image of Iranian world created in the Roman poetry as well as the question of sources used by late Latin poets. This paper can be also treated as a small contribution to the discussion on Sidonius’ imitation of Claudian poetry.

    In this article I am describing how Roman panegyric’s writers of Late Antiquity (XII Panegyrici Latini, Claudius Claudianus, Sidonius Apollinaris, Flavius Merobaudes, Priscian, Ennodius, Corippus and others) presented an image of the perfect general with reference to their object of praise. On the ground of detailed analysis of those features I am going to indicate the most expected ones according to the social reception. Moreover, I will point out those means which were used by the authors to create the image of the ideal general. Next, I will pay attention to how the authors change their way in presenting the perfect general and how this development was connected with the general evolution of the genre. Lastly, I will answer a quite perverse question: if the perfect general could lead his soldiers to a victory in a real battle. In the background there will be a continuous question, if the panegyric – despite its limitation – can or can’t be treated as a valuable historical source.

    The poem of Ignacy Srzednicki addressed to Kazimierz Nestor Sapieha was created during the Great Sejm, when the addressee served as the Speaker of the Seimas and the General Confederation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The author reconstructs the biography of the creator of the poem, explores the relationship between Srzednicki and Sapieha, as well as analyses and interprets the poem included in the appendix.

    Artykuł skoncentrowany jest na omówieniu Ody na pamiątkę urodzin doktora Jennera, wynalazcy wakcyny…, ułożonej w 1820 roku przez zapomnianego wileńskiego poetę, Ignacego Szydłowskiego. Utwór ten, wygłoszony w obecności Cesarskiego Towarzystwa Medycznego i przynajmniej czterokrotnie przedrukowany, poświęcony został upamiętnieniu postaci angielskiego lekarza, pomysłodawcy szczepionki przeciwko ospie. Wpisuje się tym samym w nieco marginalizowany – w porównaniu z liryką wyrażającą aspiracje niepodległościowe – nurt postanisławowskiej poezji okolicznościowo-publicznej związanej z osobistościami spoza sceny politycznej, działającymi w obszarze szeroko pojętej nauki. W toku historycznoliterackiej analizy zostaje on zaprezentowany jako suma wpływów polskiej i europejskiej tradycji enkomiastycznej oraz zawodowych interesów wileńskiego środowiska lekarskiego. Obserwacja ta prowadzi do podporządkowania przedstawionego w utworze poetyckiego obrazu epidemii dwóm wiodącym konwencjom – panegirycznej oraz dydaktyczno-propagandowej.  
    The text concerns the Ode in Memory of Doctor Jenner, the Inventor of the Vaccine, Celebrated by the Medical Association in Vilnius… [pol. Oda na pamiątkę urodzin doktora Jennera, wynalazcy wakcyny, obchodzoną przez Cesarskie Towarzystwo Medyczne w Wilnie…], written in 1820 by forgotten Lithuanian poet, Ignacy Szydlowski. This poem, delivered in front of the Medical Association in Vilnius and reprinted at least fourfold, was dedicated to the memory of the English doctor and originator of vaccination against smallpox. Therefore, it belongs to the post-partition poetry devoted to works of famous personalities of the world of science. The article includes analysis and interpretation of Szydłowski’s poem in the light of Polish and European encomiastic tradition. The primary aim of this consideration is to show the real implication that panegiryc poetic have on literary image of epidemic.

    The Ode written by Franciszek Dionizy Kniaźnin is the last one in the series of six odes entitled For the occasion of consecration of priest Adam Stanisław Naruszewicz, the Archbishop coadjutor of Smoleńsk (Z okoliczności tejże [konsekracji Ks(iędza) A(dama) S(tanisława) Naruszewicza B(iskupa) K(oadiutora) S(moleńskiego)]. The odes were published in 1775 in the magazine ‘Pleasant and useful games’ („Zabawy Przyjemne i Pożyteczne”). They are a poetic account of a celebration held on 25th or 28th May 1775 in St. John’s collegiate church in Warsaw and at the same time panegyric praising merita of the poet Bishop. The work is very interesting especially as a documentary as it lists names of guests that gathered for the celebrations, one of which was the king Stanisław August Poniatowski. It also shows relationships among the elite of the capital city at the time. It is worth noting that the way of illustrating is typical for Kniaźnin in a sense and introduces mythological elements in the description of religious celebration.

    The theme of the article is to present the ancient space in the epithalamium by Stanislaus Theodore Piotrkowczyk, entitled Wedding Act at the Never-Ever Fading Mount Carmel, written on the occasion of the “spiritual marriage” of the poet’s sister, Teresa Anne of St. Joseph. The article draws attention to the construction of the work, which contain characteristics of panegyric compositional elements. An important part of epithalamium is praising the virtues of the nun, who brought her attitude to gather priceless value. Visualizations of the message contained in the epithalamium about the desire to reject the beauties of the world for monastic life, in which to facilitate the improvement of the internal. Above all, the article shows Piotrkowczyk’s references to ancient tradition. These references proved that the religious themes can be presented, drawing not only from Christianity, but also from ancient heritage. Furthermore, these references also testified about the erudition of the author and of his interest in history and tradition of European culture.

    The article presents the conceit in the Polish baroque sermon Pszczółka w bursztynie [A Bee in Amber] of a Bernardine Franciszek Sitański. In the sermon the author presents the figure of St. Dorothy; he also draws attention to the virtues of Dorota Kątska, who was the abbess of St. Norbert’s Order in Zwierzyniec (near Cracow) in the 17th century, and most of all he praises the monastic way of life. Biblical and hagiographic arguments, a source of inspiration for the author as an effective means of persuasion, appeal to the imagination of the audience. Metaphors, analogies and comparisons in the sermon prove that Pszczółka w bursztynie is based upon the conceit. By using the arguments Sitański was trying not only to move the recipients, but mainly to persuade them to cultivate virtues presented by Christian heroines.

    The collections of the Jagiellonian Library contain valuable, lavishly painted manuscripts, which were commissioned in the middle of the 17th century by father Grzegorz Jan Zdziewojski of Łasek (1609–ok. 1685), an extraordinary person unjustly forgotten by the subsequent generations. He was one of the luminaries of his time. The lower classes of the Cracow society appreciated him above all for his speaking skills. He was known as an excellent preacher who preached his sermons in the churches of St. Mary and St. John. He supported students and provided them with scholarships. He was also concerned about the future of the University, to which he bequeathed capital funds. The Libri promotionum et diligentiarum¸ though little known, are the most significant of his donations that have survived to our time.
    W zbiorach Biblioteki i Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego zachowały się bogato zdobione dekoracjami malarskimi cenne księgi rękopiśmienne. W połowie XVII wieku ufundował je ks. Grzegorz Jan Zdziewojski z Łasku (1609–ok. 1685) – postać wyjątkowa, niesłusznie zapomniana przez kolejne pokolenia. Należał on do światłych umysłów epoki. Wśród plebejskich warstw Krakowa ceniono przede wszystkim jego talent krasomówczy. Uchodził za znakomitego kaznodzieję, głoszącego kazania w kościele Mariackim, jak i u św. Jana. Wspierał materialnie uczącą się młodzież, dla której fundował stypendia. Łożył przy tym koszt na ubranie i wyżywienie najuboższych studentów. Wykazywał także żywą troskę o los Alma Mater zapisując na jej rzecz fundacje kapitałowe. Najcenniejszą darowizną, jaka pozostała po nim do dziś, są mało znane Libri promotionum i Libri diligentiarum.

    Opis:
    This paper discusses the old Polish issue of orations, taking into account that qualifications that predestine this type of expressions to a variety of old Polish journalism. One must assume that oration was a remarkable genre of this functional variety in the epochs before the rise of journalism. It is extremely important to genologically characterise various types of orations that can be found in many levels of journalism. It is important for the presentation of the old Polish status of this variety of logosphere, and for the description of the evolution of the genres of contemporary journalism. The problems outlined in the paper show a certain type of wedding oration and they call for a thorough genelogical analysis. The texts reveal an interesting area of conventional journalism that should be studied. In order to provide a versatile description of such an important domain as conventionality of the ancient ages (it still calls for wider interests) it is essential to trace some details of how this heritage should be put in form.

    Opis:
    The paper is devoted to occasional laudatory verses which were written to honour princess Elżbieta Sapieżyna (née Branicka) and the members of her closest family – son Kazimierz Nestor Sapieha, General of the Lithuanian Artillery and brother Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, Great Crown Hetman. The begining of the article reminds of already known literary works containing complimentary images of the female aristocrat. The main object of author’s interest are pieces that have not been noticed by scholars of the eighteenth-century political writings. These are: anonymous ode written in 1784 in connection with arrival of Sapieżyna to Prienai (pol. Preny) in Lithuania and collection of four verses created by Wojciech Zacharkiewicz, who thereby added splendour to the Franciszek Ksawery Branicki’s coming to Warsaw for parliamentary sitting of the Great Sejm and to election of Kazimierz Nestor Sapieha for the Marshal of lithuanian confederation. The author discussed circumstances of the creation, main motifs of content and artistic composition of laudatory images of addressees. Furthermore he determined connections of these verses with then popular genres of occasional poetry and put Sapieżyna’s complimentary portraits in context of manners of creation women’s images in literary works of that time.
