    Dedication speeches serve to exemplify a broader problem of classifying oratory according to rhetorical modes and circumstances. A review of selected lectures on rhetoric from the 17th and 18th centuries (printed and in manuscripts) as to their treatment of dedication theory enables me to show both the practical constraints of perceiving dedications through the lens of the conventions governing printed dedications in books, and the connection of this form with the broader category of dedication speeches delivered when handing over a gift, a post, or even a bride during wedding ceremonies. The examples from the Polish oratory practice show the functioning of dedication speeches in the oral realm (when handing over an encomium during a wedding or a funeral). Moreover, in accordance with the politeness rule common in the Polish oratory, the relevant dialogues include both offering and thanking, and oratory also comes into play when thanking for a dedication.

    The first Salesian oratory was established in Poland in Przemyśl in 1907 as a typical form of education for young men. In 1936 another oratory was founded at the Salesian seminary in Kraków. Thanks to the good organizing skills and prudent leadership of Fr. Józef Nęcki it was soon fitted with rooms, playgrounds, playing fields, and sports facilities. The oratory provided young people with religious life, cultural and physical education, tuition, and material help. Religious life in the oratory was based on catechesis, liturgy, and prayer. An association of altar servers was founded, as well as the Catholic Association of Male Youth. Talks were given on good manners, and hygienic and esthetic issues; trips were frequently organized to movies and theaters. The oratory relied on material help in the form of gifts on the occasion of holidays and donations of food. The main source of income was the generosity of the Kraków population. The activities of the oratory were paralyzed by the outbreak of World War 2, after which its main purpose was charity and the distribution of extra meals. The cultural activity of the oratory in all its dimensions was based on Fr. Bosco’s pedagogy, and was appropriate for every age group.

    The work at hand deals with the art of orations in Jan Bielski’s Ćwiczenia krasomówsko-prawne. The analysis focused on the author›s remarks concerning rhetoric, which are to be found in the foreword, and in selected “juridical cases”. Rhetoric is perceived as helpful field in getting honours. Moreover, it is useful in unmasking the falsehood and reconciling antagonists. On the other hand, rhetoric is also shown as the “craft” which can serve vile, godless cells and which, “uncontrollable”, causes the disaster. Bielski’s Ćwiczenia... made young people aware, that acquaintance of rhetoric has a real influence on the outside world.

    Parliamentary speeches of the second half of XVIIth century are the the place of inner differentiation in a statement’s style. Besides of the formal style there are some orations, which were created in just forming „average” style and looked almost like a colloquial language. Castellan’s of Poznań, Krzysztof Grzymułtowski’s speeches are the excellent base for studies with this differentiation. The speech in the seym in 1662 is the example of „high-level” style, rich in the applications of rhetorical devices. This kind of style had ussually appeared, when matters seemed hard to the speakers, and it was this case.

    The soldiers (Polish and Lithuanian) had deputed their legations to the seym in the March of 1652 to ask for payment of overdue pay. The president of parliamentarians, Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, had given two times the responses to the delegates. These speeches are the example of „high-level” style, rich in the applications of rhetorical devices, which provided for dishonest persuassion. This high artistry had served for making the empty promises to soldiers.

    Studium przedstawia analizę porównawczą enkomionów zawartych w oracjach szlacheckich i kazaniach wygłoszonych w XVII stuleciu na pogrzebach dziewczynek i panien. Zestawienie tekstów należących do dwu różnych gatunków stawia zagadnienie wzorów osobowych w nowym świetle, gdyż zależny od rodzaju mowy sposób amplifikacji retorycznej tych samych toposów pochwalnych okazuje się mieć zasadniczy wpływ na wzorzec, jaki wyłania się z mowy.
    The study presents a comparative analysis of encomia included in noblemen’s orations and sermons delivered in the seventeenth century at the funerals of girls and maidens. The juxtaposition of texts belonging to two different genres places the issue of role models in a new light because the way of rhetorical amplification of the same laudatory topoi, which depends on the type of speech, turns out to have a fundamental influence on the model that emerges from the speech.

    The aim of the study is to analyse organizational and legal forms, currently used for the functioning of the oratories in the Salesian Province of Warsaw and to attempt to answer the question in what ways they help in the implementation of the Salesian charism and to what extent they can constitute a threat to the Salesian identity of the oratories. The source of this identity is the experience of Valdocco that Don Bosco gave his spiritual sons and daughters, and its guarantor is always the Salesian community. The forms of activities carried out by the oratories have evolved along with the changing needs and the socio-political situation. The new law which was implemented in Poland after the political transformation in 1989 provided the Salesians with new tools for their educational and care work. One of such tools adopted in the Province of Warsaw is establishment of associations which, on the one hand, stimulate the laity to act but, at the same time, carry the risk of excessive independence from the Salesian community and, therefore, also pose a threat to the Salesian identity of the oratories.
    Celem opracowania jest analiza form organizacyjno-prawnych, wykorzystywanych obecnie dla funkcjonowania oratoriów w salezjańskiej inspektorii warszawskiej oraz próba odpowiedzi, na ile są one pomocą w realizacji charyzmatu salezjańskiego, a na ile stanowić mogą zagrożenie dla salezjańskiej tożsamości oratoriów. Źródłem tej tożsamości jest doświadczenie z Valdocco, które Ksiądz Bosko przekazał swoim duchowym synom i córkom, a jej gwarantem jest zawsze wspólnota salezjańska. Formy działania oratoriów zmieniały się w zależności od potrzeb oraz sytuacji społeczno – politycznej. Nowy porządek prawny, który nastał w Polsce po transformacji ustrojowej w 1989 roku, dał salezjanom nowe narzędzia do pracy wychowawczej i opiekuńczej. Jednym z narzędzi przyjętych dla pracy oratoryjnej w inspektorii warszawskiej jest forma stowarzyszenia, z jednej strony aktywizująca do działania świeckich, ale też stwarzająca niebezpieczeństwo zbytniej niezależności od wspólnoty salezjańskiej, a co za tym idzie również zagrożenie dla salezjańskiej tożsamości samych oratoriów.

    Ks. Wawrzyniec Kuśniak jest pierwszym polskim filipinem, któremu Kościół przyznał tytuł Sługi Bożego. Mimo to brakuje dotąd poważniejszego studium na temat kapłana. Artykuł ma wypełnić tę lukę. Przedstawia stan obecnej wiedzy o ks. Kuśniaku. Ściślej, celem pracy jest dokonanie przeglądu zasobu archiwaliów dotyczących duchownego oraz zrekonstruowanie na ich podstawie najważniejszych faktów z jego życia. Ks. Kuśniak urodził się 1 sierpnia 1788 roku w Czarnkowie. Do Kongregacji Oratorium św. Filipa Neri na Świętej Górze pod Gostyniem wstąpił w 1811 roku. Święcenia kapłańskie przyjął w 1816 roku. Funkcję przełożonego wspólnoty świętogórskiej pełnił przez 27 lat, tj. aż do śmierci w 1866 roku. Odznaczał się gorliwością duszpasterską, ale także szczególnymi talentami administracyjnymi. W pamięci społeczeństwa ziemi gostyńskiej zapamiętany został jako apostoł dobroci i niestrudzony filantrop.
    Fr. Wawrzyniec Kusniak is the first Polish Oratorian to be accorded the title of Servant of God by the Church. In spite of this, a serious study of the priest has been lacking until now. This article is to fill this gap. It presents the current state of knowledge about Fr. More precisely, the aim of the paper is to review the archival materials concerning the priest and to reconstruct on their basis the most important facts of his life. Fr. Kusniak was born on August 1, 1788 in Czarnków. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri at Swieta Gostraña in 1811. He was ordained a priest in 1816. He served as superior of the community for 27 years, from 1839 until his death in 1866. He was distinguished for his pastoral zeal as well as his special administrative talents. However, the inhabitants of the Gostynin region remember him above all as an apostle of goodness and a tireless philanthropist.
