    The article presents Wangari Muta Maathai’s lifetime achievements and her involvement in the environmental protection in Kenya (1977–2011). The analysis of the Green Belt Movement seeks answers to the questions concerning African grassroots movements and their opportunities in the field of natural environment conservation, including safe access to potable water sources. The organisation initiated by Wangari Muta Maathai has been promoting the idea of tree planting in order to maintain sustainable ecosystem, which also concerns the crucial issue of sufficient clean water resources. The main source book used in this article is Maathai’s autobiography that is supported by individual observations of Magdalena Dębowska, gained during numerous visits in Kenya in the following years: 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011–2012.

    The audit covered almost all stages of the hunting management, starting with administrative activities, such as division of regions into hunting districts and categorisation thereof, leasing of hunting districts and their management transfer, as well as calculation and distribution of rent for their use. The issues related directly to hunting have also been audited, such as the regularity and realisation of annual hunting plans, documentation of hunting, realisation of statutory objectives by game protection centres, securing of the State Treasury’s and citizens’ interests with regard to damages due to hunting, analysis of financial results of hunting management, the functioning of the State Hunting Guard, and the supervision of hunting.

    Shortly after Poland regained its independence in 1918, a law was proposed that would comprehensively protect the environment. The idea was, however, considered somewhat premature, as there was no existing expertise on how it would affect different aspects of social and economic life. The leaders of the environmental movement in the country believed that such a law should not be determined at a negotiating table but arise from everyday practice. How it actually worked out can be seen in the dispute between the State Council for Nature Protection (established in 1925) and the Bureau of Amelioration of Polesia (established in 1928) over the amelioration of Polesian marshes. This was sparked off in early 1929 when the Council began warning of possible negative effects of extensive drainage and demanded that environmental concerns be taken into account by the amelioration engineers. Józef Próchnik, the director of the Bureau, considered this an illegitimate critique of his activities and angrily attacked the Council’s president, Władysław Szafer. Próchnik accused him of misleading the public and creating an unnecessary alarm. This conflict showed the limits of the Council’s own independence and the real position of the environmentalists in the kaleidoscope of power in interwar Poland.

    Autorka podejmuje kluczowy problem interwencji architektoniczno-konserwatorskiej w skali przestrzeni zurbanizowanej miasta, a generalnie środowiska historycznego. Przywołuje najważniejsze myśli filozofów tej miary co Tatarkiewicz, Kołakowski, Bauman, Gadamer, Eliade czy Umberto Eco, stwierdzając, że człowiek ma prawo i konieczność wyboru wartości definiując własne pojęcie piękna bazując na indywidualnych, autonomicznych odczuciach. Autorka nawiązuje także do myśli Juliusza Żórawskiego i jego filozofii „budowy formy architektonicznej” w kontekście historycznym, bazując na paradygmacie kształtowania nowych form architektonicznych z zachowaniem właściwych relacji z otoczeniem. Uważa, że architektura współczesna, realizowana w środowisku historycznym jest sztuką dodawania nowych wartości do istniejącego kontekstu przestrzennego i kulturowego.
    The author addresses the key issue of architectonicconservation intervention in the urbanised space of the city, and generally the historic environment. He quotes the most significant thoughts of such philosophers as Tatarkiewicz, Kołakowski, Bauman, Gadamer, Eliade or Umberto Eco, claiming that man has the right and finds it necessary to select values by defining his own notion of beauty basing on individual, autonomous emotions. The author alludes also to the ideas of Juliusz Żórawski and his philosophy of “building architectonic form” in the historical context, basing on the paradigm of shaping new architectonic forms while preserving proper relations with the surroundings. He believes, that modern architecture realised in the historic environment is the art of adding new values to the existing spatial and cultural context.
