    Opis:
    The aim of this article is to discuss and analyze an extensive essay by Konstanty A. Jeleński, entitled Bellmer albo anatomia miłości fizycznej i nieświadomości [Bellmer or the anatomy of physical love and the unconsciousness], devoted to the works of Hans Bellmer, a German painter, drawer and writer. The article presents the scope and nature of artistic activities undertaken by Bellmer and the way in which these activities and works were described and interpreted by Jeleński. The aim of the article is to show the basic contexts in which Jeleński placed controversial and ambiguous works by the German artist. The article also mentions the main interpretative keys Jeleński uses to show the creative philosophy and uncover the secrets of artistic expression, especially the mechanisms of perceiving the body and visual manifestations of unconsciousness which come to the fore in Bellmer’s works.

    Opis:
    The article attempts to analyze the role that in Bolesław Prus's Lalka is played by the tactile contact, that is one of the aspects of non-verbal communication. Considering the functions of this kind of message from the perspective of the interactive situations in which the protagonists of the novel take part, one pays a special attention to the emotions generated or expressed in this way. The novel contains signals documenting a number of episodes in which touch is involved, sometimes ones that are of significance to the plot and that almost always concentrate the attention of the protagonists who watch each other carefully. The text is an attempt at defining the role and function of the gestures of touching the partner's hand in an interactive situation, short and rare episodes of touching oneself, forced tactile contacts and substitute gestures – meeting the need of another person's intimacy. Determining the borders of the intimacy sphere touch becomes part of the relation between the protagonists, but also an element of a refined intrigue and flirt. Tactile contact is also sometimes taken as a peculiar sign of threat, and it is often associated with a closeness one does not want and with transgressing the existing social norms. The text also deals with the problem of the presence of an individual in a crowd. Tactile contact and breaking the interactive distance is sometimes a determinant of that presence. In Lalka a crowd is often a dangerous, strict community condemning an individual, and presence among others is connected with the feeling of loneliness and alienation. The article interprets Lalka as a record of yearning for understanding and experiencing intimacy, considering some tactile episodes as significant facts that are crucial for the plot of the novel.

    Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, co zainteresowałoby prof. Mariana Maciejewskiego w powieści Bolesława Prusa Lalka. Próba hipotetycznego skonstruowania takiej próby lekturowej prowadzi do odpowiedzi, iż kwestiami tymi są: problem wiary – jej rodzenia się, rozwoju i owoców, jakie daje oraz proces obumierania starego człowieka w Stanisławie Wokulskim – głównym bohaterze powieści. Autor wykorzystuje cztery epizody, podczas których postać słyszy Głos, co jest wyraźnym znakiem jej kontaktu z transcendencją i zostaje potraktowane jako interwencja Boga w historię człowieka. Zastosowanie do tekstu Lalki metodologii hermeneutyki kerygmatycznej znacznie ułatwia interpretację miejsc w powieści do tej pory nastręczających pewnej trudności. Odsłania blask prawdy tego tekstu i znacznie uzupełnia uniwersum powieści realistycznej.
    The article is an attempt to answer the question: What would arouse Prof. Marian Maciejewski's interest in the novel by Bolesław Prus "The Doll". An attempt at a hypothetical construction of such a reading test leads to the answer that such issues would be: the problem of faith − its rise, development and fruit it gives, as well as the process of the dying of an old man in Stanisław Wokulski − the novel's protagonist. The author uses four episodes during which the character hears the Voice, which is a clear sign of its contact with the transcendence and is treated as God's intervention in the history of man. Applying the methodology of kerygmatic hermeneutics to the text of “The Doll” makes it considerably easier to interpret those parts of the novel that up till now have presented some difficulties. It reveals the splendor of the truth in the text and to a large degree complements the universe of the realistic novel.

    O ile po pobieżnej lekturze Lalki oraz Ludzi bezdomnych można odnieść wrażenie, że autorzy obu powieści stosują zupełnie różne rozwiązania formalne, aby nadać swoim dziełom ostateczny kształt, o tyle wnikliwsza analiza pozwala dostrzec kilka inspiracji kompozycyjnych zastosowanych przez Żeromskiego, czerpiącego bezpośrednio z dokonań warsztatu pisarskiego Prusa. Spójne koncepcje kompozycyjne obu powieści są jednak podszyte regułami ustalonymi na długo przez końcem XIX wieku — obaj pisarze znajdują bowiem wyraźną inspirację w teorii tragedii antycznej Arystotelesa. I choć prawidła Stagiryty dotyczą dramatu, to doskonale sprawdzają się także podczas wydobywania tragicznych rysów bohatera na gruncie dzieł epickich, co — zdaje się — doskonale przeczuwali Prus i Żeromski, swoiście transponując formalne reguły tragedii antycznej do swoich powieści. W artykule autor prześledzi naznaczone tragizmem losy Wokulskiego i Judyma, przykładając do nich wypracowany przez Arystotelesa schemat tragedii greckiej.
    Whereas a cursory reading of The Doll and The Homeless may give the impression that the authors of each of these novels use completely different formal solutions to give the final shape of their works, a more thorough analysis reveals several compositional inspirations used by Zeromski, drawing directly on the school of Prus. But the common compositional concept of both novels was established in literary convention long before the end of the 19th century — both writers take a clear inspiration from Aristotle's theory of ancient tragedy. Although Aristotle’s rules related to drama, they are also useful for the construction of epic works. In this paper, the author traces the tragic fate of Wokulski and Judym, using Aristotle’s theory of Greek tragedy.

    Opis:
    There is more to the literary polemic between the author of "The Doll" and the creator of "The Trilogy" than merely Prus’ contradictory review of Sienkiewicz’s "With Fire and Sword". It also includes "The Doll’s" multifarious allusiveness to "Fire in the Steppe", manifested in particular in the meaningful, symbolic ending, whereby both protagonists blow themselves up, literally and metaphorically cornered in old buildings. Prus converses with Sienkiewicz in a discreet manner, though the careful reader will spot contentious issues. These include the struggle for a different type of protagonist – not a hero, but an individual entangled in romantic myths, paralysing their life forces; a different perception of the past, rational and fair rather than glorified and martyrological; finally, a different outlook on the present and the future, promoting entrepreneurship and economy as tools for the development of Poland as a European partner, rather than the idealistic focus on the utopian, foregone concepts of military achievements. The text highlights the similarities in the characters of Wokulski and Wołodyjowski, with special emphasis on the final scenes and the demise of the world after the protagonists’ respective disappearance. The two famous literary suicides, patterning after the deed of Ordon as depicted in Mickiewicz’s poem, have been parodied (e.g. by Mrożek) and adopted, thus becoming literary weapons in the struggle with the Polish mythopoeia, xenophobia, and exaggerated patriotism.

    The article is devoted to the real and to the novel Mincl family – the Lublin merchants and community workers. The author tries to show changes in social-economical reality in the second half of the 19th century, pointing to merchants as a characteristic example of these kinds of reality. The characters of Mincls also serve exemplification of the statement of the way the real “here” is changed into the novel “there”; how a real topographic point (Mincl's shop) becomes the mythical axis mundi. This also makes it possible to compare the realities of the 19th century Lublin and Warsaw with the world of Lalka.
