    Opis:
    This article, dedicated to illustrations created by Jan Lebenstein, points out the cultural condition of illustration itself and the works of the painter in particular. It shows analyzed problems in the perspective of culture of meeting. On the example of drawings to biblical story of The Babel Tower it indicates the artistic strategies of the painter which enable him to surpass certain cultural messages by the mean of a picture. Finally, in the synthetic way the article presents typology of Jan Lebenstein’s illustrations.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest kwestiom przeglądowym związanym z widzeniem i wizualnością w prozie Herlinga-Grudzińskiego. Ukazuje funkcje oka i widzenia oraz znaczenia nadawane przez pisarza kreowanym obrazom literackim. Zwraca też uwagę na stylistyki malarskie, stanowiące kontekst dla zrozumienia pewnej eklektyczności warstwy wizualnej prac Grudzińskiego. Na przykładzie fragmentów z opowiadania Wieża prezentuje też sensualne bogactwo stosowanych przez tego autora rozwiązań, koncentrując się na określonym wycinku warsztatu Herlinga i jednocześnie przypominając o celach realizowanych przez niego przy pomocy wybranych zabiegów.
    This article is dedicated to a review of questions related to the categories of seeing and the visual in the prose of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. The paper shows the functions of the eye and seeing, as well as the significance of the literary images created by the writer. It also points out to the painterly stylistics which provide an important context for understanding the eclectic character of the visual layer of his works. On the example of some chosen extracts from the story entitled Wieża (The Tower), the article presents the sensual richness of the ideas used by Herling-Grudziński, focusing on the methods he adopted and describing the main goals he wanted to achieve by his application of certain literary tools.

    The main goal of this article is to reveal anthropological dimention of the artistic creations of almost unknown painter, the wife of the outstanding polish writer Gustaw Herling-Grudziński – Krystyna Herling-Grudziński. In the text I ask questions about the vision of a human being that we can find in those pictures and the ways painter shows its depersonalization. The main motivation of the use of anthropological perspective in the study of those works is biography of the artist (especially her suicidal death) and the character of her creations.

    The problem of shaping the security designates one of the most important tasks facing the state nowadays. The key role in constituting and maintaining an adequate level of security of the state plays a strategy and national policy on the field of leadership, efficient organization of crisis management system or the elimination of internal and external threats. Knowledge about the essence of the state security sets the scope of self-determination of citizens with reference to their basic existential needs and requirements, as well as national values. The implementation of these requirements is generally understood as protection of life and health, timeless ethical values, property and environment, as well as state institutions against threats from the forces of nature and human activities. Neutralizing these threats must be a priority of the state, since the proper management of security leads to the survival of current and future generations of Poles and ensures proper living conditions and development. Creation of a superior, integrated plans of defense of life and human health and the protection of national infrastructure is of a great importance for the security of the country. The focus on the utilization of full potential of both the state and local authorities and commercial protection establishments also becomes the most valuable.

    : Recent research on reading situation in Poland indicates decreasing interest in books among adults. This tendency is also supposedly followed by changes in reading models as well as different ways of reader-text interactions. Since internauts are generally believed to be a non-reading community, an online questionnaire for Facebook users was prepared, a group which is quite easy to reach, to get a better insight into the situation. The research was carried out between April 23rd and May 3rd 2011 on a group of 150 respondents. It focused on book reading and purchasing intensity, book choices, most commonly used book sources, reading traditional magazines, online magazines, e-books and using digital libraries. It was available in either Polish or English language version. A total of 138 respondents from Poland, USA, UK, Tunisia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, Mexico, South Korea and Switzerland took part, one origin unknown. Most of them (74,67%) were people between 17 and 35 years old, the eldest one being 77, the youngest 13. Out of 138 interviewees, 110 were women, over 76% lived in urban areas and declared their education level as higher (57,3%) or secondary (28,7%). The results proved surprisingly optimistic. Only 9 interviewees admitted that they had not read any books in the last 12 months, others read 0–2 or 3–5 books a month. Fantasy, suspense fiction and classical novels were the most popular among them. When asked about favourite titles, respondents listed mainly classics of world literature and popular bestsellers. Reviews as well as recommendations of family members or friends had the greatest influence on their reading choices. Almost 75% of survey participants bought books, usually once a month or once every few months, however, they preferred to borrow them from libraries or friends. Almost half of Polish respondents read e-books and online magazines, although they avoided using digital libraries. They also read traditional print magazines, especially political and social ones, women and popular science magazines. As the results show, reading still remains one of the most popular forms of spending free time for both interviewed Facebook users and other members of their communities. Books are also a popular subject of their conversations and discussions in both real and virtual space.

    Celem zaprezentowanych badań było sprawdzenie, czy miękkie multifokalne soczewki kontaktowe z wysokimi addycjami o konstrukcji przeznaczonej do kontroli krótkowzroczności mogą wpływać na ruchy oczu i koordynację oko–ręka. W badaniu wzięło udział 24 młodych dorosłych, którym zaaplikowano miękkie multifokalne soczewki kontaktowe (Relax, SwissLens) z addycją +2D (Add2) i +4D (Add4) oraz kontrolne soczewki jednoogniskowe (Add0, Orbis, SwissLens). Zadaniem uczestników było sięganie w kierunku kółka wyświetlanego na ekranie dotykowym. Mierzono czasy reakcji, dokładność dotknięcia celu oraz latencje ruchów oczu. Wyniki wykazały, że miękkie multifokalne soczewki kontaktowe nie wpłynęły na latencje ruchów oczu (135, 136 i 139 ms odpowiednio dla Add0, Add2 i Add4, p = 0,171), czasy reakcji (732, 730, 727 ms dla Add0, Add2 i Add4, p = 0,932) ani na procent błędów (17%, 13%, 18% dla Add0, Add2 i Add4, p = 0,386)
    The aim of the present study was to assess whether soft multifocal contact lens (SMFCLs) with high addition powers, designed for myopia control, may have an impact on eye movements and eye–hand coordination. A total of 24 young adults used SMFCLs (Relax, SwissLens) with high additions: +2D (Add2) and +4D (Add4). Single vision (Add0) contact lenses were used as controls (Orbis, SwissLens). In the eye–hand coordination task, the study participants were asked to point out the small circle displayed on a touch screen. Reaction time and accuracy of pointing, as well as latency of eye movements were measured. Results showed that SMFCLs had no significant impact on the latency of eye movements (135, 136, 139 ms, for Add0, Add2 and Add4, p = 0.171), reaction time (732, 730, 727 ms for Add0, Add2 and Add4, p = 0.932) or percent error (17%, 13%, 18% for Add0, Add2 and Add4, p = 0.386).

    On the 12 of April 2010, the day of Professor Olga Czerniawska's birthday, special seminar concerning her academic activity was held at the Scientific Society of Lódz. Professor Olga Czerniawska is outstanding humanist, representative of academic environment of Lódz. She perfectly joins in Her life roles of academic, expert, pedagogue, educational and social activist, teacher. It is approved by long academic work, achievements in research, the character of Her social activity and effects of educational work. After graduation from history at University of Lódz in 1952 She started to work as history instructor at the Youth Cultural Center and as a teacher at high school for adults. At the same time She was working part-time for University of Lódz and the Polish Academy of Science, starting Her academic activity. From 1962 to 1979 She was participant of seminar on social education leaded by Professor Aleksander Kaminski. Under Professor Kaminski's direction She wrote Ph.D. thesis 'Adult education and family', that She defended in 1968. Formally She started to work at the University of Lódz in 1972 and 6 years later She earned habilitation on the basis of publication 'Counseling as support for educational environment'. From 1981 She was chief of the Adult Education Division and later chief of the Theory of Education Chair and Adult Education Division at the Department of Education (the University of Lódz). In 1996 President of the Republic of Poland bestowed Her Professor's title. In research She is aimed at problems of adult education and its place in theory of andragogy. She is a pioneer of biographical research in Polish andragogy. She has also developed comparative andragogy through many years of co-operation with Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France, resulting in international conferences, translations of foreign publications (e.g. E. Gelpi, P. Dominice) and common publications. Very important part of Her interests is gerontology, that is enriched by Her international contacts, activity in different bodies and personal experience. After getting retired Professor Olga Czerniawska is still active as academic at the Humanistic and Economic Academy of Lódz. She is still full of creativity, passion and engagement, starting new projects. She wrote over 200 publications, among those 9 author's books. Many times She was rewarded for Her academic and educational activity. Professor Olga Czerniawska is mistress, for young academic staff - unprecedented example of academic in gaining new areas of research and passion. In this volume of the Andragogy Yearbook we publish report from Professor Czerniawska's Jubilee, Her curriculum vitae, lists of publications and speeches of Her pupils, colleagues and co-workers: Elzbieta Woznicka, Boguslaw Sliwerski, Jozef Kargul, Barbara Juras-Krawczyk, Kazimierz Zawadzki, Joanna Stelmaszczyk, Katarzyna Wypiorczyk-Przygoda.

    On the basis of our earlier studies in the group of 7,8-disubstituted derivatives of 1,3-dimetyl-3,7-dihydro-purine-2,6-dione, some new derivatives of theophylline were synthesized and tested for their electrocardiographic, antiarrhythmic and hypotensive activity as well as for α1-adrenoreceptor affinities. The performed preliminary tests indicated that new compounds did not significantly affect the normal ECG in vivo. As the result of present studies it may be concluded that all compounds did not possess hypotensive and arrhythmic activity. The results of the binding assays on α1-adrenergic receptors showed, that these derivatives display no affinity for α1-adrenergic receptors. Lack of antiarrhythmic and antihypertensive activity may result from the absence of affinity for the α1-adrenergic receptor. Performed chemical modifications lead to the loss of pharmacological activity previously observed among other derivatives in this group. Generally in comparison with the previously reported derivatives, replacing the phenoxyethylpiperazine by other moiety, changed the antiarrhythmic and hypotensive activity.

    Opis:
    Rdzeniowy zanik mięśni (Spinal Muscular Atrophy, SMA) jest genetycznie uwarunkowanym postępującym schorzeniem charakteryzującym się przedwczesnym obumieraniem komórek ruchowych rdzenia kręgowego, którym szacunkowo w Polsce dotkniętych jest obecnie ok. 1200 osób. W pracy zaprezentowana jest analiza odpowiedzi na zaproponowaną przez autorów ankietę badawczą, która została rozesłana do ponad 30 krajowych ośrodków leczących SMA, zarówno u pacjentów dorosłych jak i dotkniętych nią dzieci. Zgromadzone dane o blisko 247 leczonych w Polsce pacjentów dorosłych oraz 286 dzieci, pozwoliły przy użyciu zaawansowanych narzędzi statystycznych, na wyciągnięcie istotnych wniosków dotyczących obecnej sytuacji terapeutycznej SMA w skali kraju. Ustalono rozkład wiekowy pacjentów z SMA i na jej podstawie wyznaczono zmiany wartości średniej masy ciała i jej mediany w zależności od typu SMA i liczby kopii genu SMN2. Przeanalizowano zależność występowania skoliozy oraz czynników ryzyka jej wystąpienia u pacjentów z SMA. W tym kontekście przedstawiono również dane dotyczące obecnych metod leczenia pacjentów, w szczególności z wykorzystaniem nusinersenu i wskazano główną przyczynę zaprzestania terapii tym preparatem. Dane przedstawione w pracy mogą być przydatne w optymalizacji oraz ocenie skuteczności leczenia. Jednocześnie praca nakreśla podstawowy obraz doświadczenia pacjenta i opiekuna z SMA w erze po leczeniu, w tym zmiany jakości życia z roku na rok w wyniku stosowania nowych terapii i lepszej opieki.stanu zagrożenia życia. Celem pracy jest podsumowanie informacji na temat dotychczas opublikowanych objawów neurologicznych COVID-19 w populacji pediatrycznej, ocena możliwych patomechanizmów ich powstawania oraz porównanie z objawami występującymi u dorosłych.
    Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetically determined progressive disease characterized by the premature death of motor cells of the spinal cord, which currently affects approximately 1,200 people in Poland. The study presents an analysis of responses in the research questionnaire sent to over 30 national centers treating SMA, both in adult and children patients. The collected data on 247 adult patients and 286 children treated in Poland was processed with advanced statistical tools. The aim was to draw significant conclusions about the current therapeutic situation of SMA patients in the country. The age distribution was determined. The changes in average and median body weight were established depending on the type of SMA and the number of SMN2 gene copies. The relationship between scoliosis occurrence and risk factors for its occurrence in patients with SMA was analyzed. In this context, data on the current methods of treating patients, particularly with the use of nusinersen, was presented and the main reason for discontinuing the medication was indicated. Finally, the work outlines a basic picture of the patient’s and caregiver’s experience with SMA in the post-treatment era, including changes in quality of life, year by year, due to new therapies and better care.
