Trains are frequently custom made to accommodate the individual technical specifications of different rail service providers. Each new design requires a variety of unique, train specific components that are supplied by additional independent original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Traditionally the traction motor is among the many custom made components required by train manufacturers. These motors are intensively engineered to ensure function and quality, which results in increased complexity throughout the value chain and adversely affects their manufacturing lead time. To overcome these problems, ABB has developed a new range of induction traction motors with built-in flexibility so that customer-specific requirements can be met using a single modular design.

Opis:
Analysis of stable operation conditions of the input filters of the mine locomotives' drive systems was presented in the paper. Equations describing the drive system in various operation states were formulated on the basis of a simplified model of the traction system. The points of balance were obtained and linearization of the system was carried out using the power series method and Jacobi matrix. Conditions of stable operation concerning the minimum value of the input filter capacitance depending on the parameters of the supply source and traction network and also on the characteristics and operation states of the drive were given. Special attention was paid to the analysis of the stable operation conditions in the generating mode during braking. Selected results of simulation and laboratory tests concerning the stable operation conditions of the input filter of the drive system of the pulse-mode controlled mine locomotive were presented. Laboratory tests were carried out using a laboratory stand equipped with a 45 kW traction motor of the mine locomotive type Ld 31.

The paper deals with permanent magnets motors for traction application. In past years, in locomotives designed for mining applications DC motors of output 25/45 kW were used. Since 1990 such motors have not been manufactured, so the old motors have to be replaced by new ones. Due to usage of PM, designers increased the output of the motors to 33/60 kW. The motors were designed as motors with magnets mounted on the surface of the rotor. A method of field weakening was implemented into electronic converter supplying the motor to increase the rotation speed from 1500 up to 2250 rpm. A number of laboratory test were done. The paper presents results of the tests and shows the area of installation of PM motors. Komel Centre is ready to design and manufacture motors with PM for different application (rail traction, electric cars and vehicles, pumping systems etc).

New controllable power semiconductor devices make the high frequency pulse-mode operation of the power electronic converters in traction drive systems possible. The capacity and inductance of the converter input filter limiting the ripple of the traction network voltage and current can be decreased for this reason. However, the significant change of the parameter values of these elements can be unacceptable due to necessity to ensure the stable operation of the pulse-mode control system. Results of analytical research, computer-aided simulation and laboratory research concerning stability of the pulse-mode controlled drive system with the electric mining locomotive's traction motor are presented in this paper. On the basis of the traction system simplified model consisting of the energy source, traction network, input filter and drive system, the analysis of system operation was carried out. The non-linear differential equations describing the system were formulated and the points of balance were calculated. The relationships concerning the minimum value of the filter capacity ensuring proper work of the system were obtained on the basis of stability conditions. The waveforms of voltages in the system in stable and unstable working conditions obtained as result of computer simulation using Maple program are shown in the paper. Selected results of laboratory tests of the stability of the traction drive system equipped with the current and speed controllers are also shown here. The specific attention was paid to the influence of the filter capacitor capacity, line resistance and load current on the filter capacitor voltage fluctuations.

Opis:
Selection of the AC motor for traction applications depends strongly on economical reasons. That means, that it is important to keep the dynamical performance of the vehicle as well as possible but the low price of the drive is also required. Usually the compromise in this choice is achieved thanks to the selection of the AC drive nominal parameters corresponding to the middle velocities of the vehicle. Unfortunately, during the motor operation with higher velocities we observe then the lack of the voltage necessary for effective driving. The aim of this paper is to show the procedure of selection of 165kW AC motor for trolley-bus drive. There are given some reasons for choosing of the motor nominal data which do not correspond to the high speed working region. On the example of trolley-bus drive in Lublin it is shown how to adjust the reference frame for demanded flux vector and an algorithm which enables the drive control in the flux weakening region is also described.

In the majority of electric trolley locomotives operated in Polish mines, a significant (3:1) main poles' field weakening in the traction machines is necessary. In the paper, special attention was paid to an analysis and results of laboratory tests of a transistor-based system designed for a pulse-mode control of the traction motors' excitation current of the locomotive type Ld31 (90 kW). A capacitor connected in parallel to the excitation winding of the traction motor is discharged through an resistor in the described system. Consequences of the significant differences in the current overload capacity of power transistors and SCR thyristors were presented. The relationships between a field weakening rate and an armature current for different switch duty ratios of the transistor were obtained on the basis of an approximate analysis of the system operation. The steady-state characteristic curves of the excitation current versus the armature current and power losses in the resistor were found using Maple computer algebra system. Results of the laboratory tests concerning the relationship between the excitation current and the armature current and selected oscillograms of the voltage and current waveforms were also shown.

This paper deals with practical methods of energy optimal control of traction drives with induction motors. In vector-controlled electric traction drives there is a capability of decoupling control of the flux and torque of the traction motor. This makes it possible to control the flux in all regions of the motor speed to achieve traction motor operation at the efficiency as high as possible especially when load is small. It means that the drive controller is using only such points of operation that are characterized by the highest motor efficiency or by the lowest losses in the drive. Firstly, it was presented a block diagram of the scalar-controlled traction drive using constant current and constant slip-frequency control. By applying a proper value of slip-frequency one can achieve motor operation at highest efficiency. Next, block diagrams of traction drives using rotor FOC and DSC with the loss minimizing algorithm are presented. There may be used algorithms based on induction motor loss models or based on search controllers of minimum that are using fuzzy logic. PWM inverter supply of the traction motor and railway operation conditions were taken into consideration.

The suitable control of the tram vehicle at various disturbances of the city traffic can ensure the electric energy savings equal to even 30 %. The author of this work continues with elaboration of computer software making possible realization of the tram vehicle run according to the criterion of the minimum energy use. In literature, the problem of the energy saving ride was solved for the tram vehicle only at the assumption that the running of the tram is realized without the traffic disturbances, for the separated, straight and horizontal tracks. Computer software for these idealized run conditions couldn't applied in real routs and literature methods weren't introduced to the energy saving control of tram vehicles. Within the original methodics of the author, the following new phenomena are taken into consideration: an influence of traffic disturbances, changes of motion resistances, interaction of different vehicles. In the typical, dynamical ride of a tram, great changes of values of motor losses occur within resistance, iron and mechanical losses. This effect has been here analysed and taken into account for algorithm of an energy saving traffic of a tram.

The paper describes AC and DC drives used in underground trains and braking methods of underground trains cooperating with an Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system. A train drive with an AC motor and a drive with DC motor with impulse and resistance riot has been described. An ATO system ensures automatic train piloting such as acceleration and braking. A type of this system, used especially on underground lines implements a direct position breaking. The precision of train braking depends on the motor control, which is particularly important during electrodynamic braking. The type of used drive affects on preciseness and quality of duty braking process. The concept of an efficient regulation of the duty braking, the control- execution system and a breaking quality indicator has been described.

Artykuł prezentuje wpływ zmiany stopnia wzbudzenia napędowego silnika szeregowego prądu stałego na uzyskiwane przez lokomotywę kopalnianą i skład pociągu parametry trakcyjne. Zmiana stopnia wzbudzenia silnika szeregowego prądu stałego powoduje zmianę ukształtowania momentu napędowego silnika względem uzyskiwanej prędkości obrotowej i prądu silnika. Ma to decydujący wpływ na uzyskiwaną wartość przyśpieszenia oraz prędkość maksymalną lokomotywy i całego składu pociągu. Zmiany charakterystyki prędkości obrotowej i momentu silnika trakcyjnego na skutek zmian stopnia wzbudzenia pozwalają na dobór parametrów trakcyjnych lokomotywy i składu pociągu. Przedstawiona w artykule analiza wyników symulacji komputerowych pozwala na wyciągnięcie wniosków dotyczących optymalnego doboru stopnia wzbudzenia silnika szeregowego prądu stałego w zależności od oczekiwanych parametrów trakcyjnych stawianych lokomotywie i składowi pociągu w trudnych warunkach kopalnianych.
The article presents the impact of the change of drive excitation of DC series motor upon traction parameters obtained by a coal mine locomotive and train. The change in level of DC series motor excitation causes a change in the way thrust torque is shaped against engine rotational speed and current of the engine. It is of crucial importance upon received acceleration value and maximum speed of the locomotive and the entire train. Changes in engine speed and the torque of traction motor characteristics resulting from the changes in the level of excitation allow the choice traction parameters of locomotive and train. The analysis of computer simulation results presented in the article allows drawing conclusions regarding optimal choice of the level of DC series motor excitation depending on expected traction parameters of the locomotive and train in difficult coal mine environment.

W tym okresie miał miejsce niezwykle intensywny rozwój energoelektroniki oraz systemów informatycznych, oddziałujący w istotnym stopniu na koncepcje układu napędowego lokomotyw elektrycznych. Można uważać, że dzięki temu powstała już czwarta i piąta generacja tych lokomotyw.

W artykule przedstawiono drganiową metodę diagnozowania silników trakcyjnych wzbudzanych magnesami trwałymi, które są wykorzystywane m.in. w pojazdach elektrycznych. Metoda wykorzystuje właściwości maszyn elektrycznych z magnesami trwałymi, a mianowicie zjawisko indukowania się napięcia w uzwojeniu twornika pod wpływem drgań mechanicznych wirnika względem stojana. W pracy przedstawiono model polowo – obwodowy, wyniki badań statycznych, wyniki obliczeń oraz symulacji mających na celu detekcję częstotliwości, które odpowiadają wibracjom, wymuszonych asymetrią geometrii promieniowej między stojanem, a wirnikiem.
This article presents a vibration diagnostic method designed for permanent magnets (PM) traction motors. Those machines are commonly used in traction drives of electrical vehicles. Specific structural properties of machines excited by permanent magnets are used in this method - electromotive force (EMF) generated due to vibrations. This work presents: field-circuit model, results of static tests, results of calculations and simulations.
