Montale's poetry
Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present a new interpretation of Eugenio Montale’s early poems from the perspective of the gift theory which, ever since the publication of Bronisław Malinowski’s Argonauts of the Western Pacific and Marcel Mauss’s anthropological study Essai sur le don, has become one of the most fruitful interdisciplinary conversations among anthropologists, philosophers, scholars and economists. The paper is focused on the genesis of gift in Montale which coincides, in a certain way, with Heidegger’s concept of Dasein thrown into the world which has alredy been given to it. The analysis of different passages from Mediterraneo session will then appear as a new interpretative horizon of Montale’s poetry governed by the immense power of gift that interacts within the triadic relation: refuse – receive – repay.

Opis:

This article is a kind of journey through the poetic work of Karol Wojtyła / John Paul II – a wandering that is ascetic, yet extremely rich – in the footsteps of an outsider, a person free from our native historical and cultural context, and hence open to the unlimited possibilities of interpretation. This work shows the universal character of Karol Wojtyła’s poetic output; it emphasises new elements in the perception of that poetry, while showing the meaning of the verses in a different light, verses still relevant and invariably addressed to man, who is also (and maybe especially) struggling with eternal dilemmas today. The early literary works already contained two profound dimensions: the Slavic soul and intellectual classicism, which would also become a feature of John Paul II’s talent for ecumenical communication and his theological vision of the Church. In the transition from youthful sonnets to hymns, we can notice not only the stylistic development and depth of the message, but, above all, a move towards conscious religiousness, contemplation, towards the priesthood, a move which was born in the very dramatic time of the Second World War. As a priest, on the other hand, his poetic choices were marked by a desire to understand the condition of man and to see God’s love for His creation. This contemplation becomes increasingly more like a prayer, and dialogue is born out of prayer. Karol Wojtyła’s literary work appears as a story about his own inner experience and reveals a spiritual anthropology.

In this article, we address the issue of poetic translation and re-translation, beginning from a theoretical approach and, then, contextualizing it by the Italian versions of Antonio Machado’s poetry during the 20th century and the last decades. In the first part, we underline the most important elements that make poetic (re-)translation an autonomous, creative and original “literary genre”. In the second part, we compare Machado’s translations by Oreste Macrì to the ones newly realized by the author of the present article in terms of language, strategies and editorial target.
W niniejszym artykule rozpatrzona została kwestia poetyckiego przekładu i retranslacji, rozpoczynając od teoretycznego podejścia poprzez jej kontekstualizację na podstawie włoskiego tłumaczenia poezji Antoniego Machado w ciągu XX wieku i ostatnich dziesięcioleci. W pierwszej części przedstawiono najważniejsze elementy czyniące poetycką (re)translację niezależnym, kreatywnym i oryginalnym “gatunkiem literackim”.

Translating Montale. The problem of “objective correlative” – The presence of “objective correlative” in two first Montale’s poetry books requires specific translation strategies. In this article, we analyse Polish translations of two famous Montale’s poems: Meriggiare pallido e assorto and La casa dei doganieri, focusing on nouns which can have value of “objective correlatives”. Although the translators seem to follow closely the originals, they actually change some words regarding very specific objects. What is more they do not deal with deictic elements crucial for the grid of relations between the things and the lyrical subject, indispensable for reconstructing his sentimental and emotional world. And in fact neither of translators notice that a very closed reading of Montale’s poetry renouncing any interpretation seems to be the only possible and acceptable one.

Transcription and translation: parallel experiences in music and poetry – Referring to some personal experiences and some statements by Norman Davies, Umberto Eco and Fabio Scotto, the author tries to find analogies between translating poetry and transcribing music. Before and behind the performer’s work, the translator and the transcriber deal with important issues such as timbre and tone, which are not less important than parameters easier to define and more debated (rhythm, phonics). The translator of poetry should “think for poetry”, paraphrasing the title of Leibowitz’s book about transcription Thinking for orchestra.

Poetry for children in translation. Comments on the Polish issue of Gianni Rodari’s poems – As I. Even-Zohar has observed, “in spite of the broad recognition among historians of culture of the major role translation has played in the crystallization of national cultures, relatively little research has been carried out so far in this area” (1990: 45). The verdict of the Israeli scholar still seems to hold true today with regard to the translation of children’s literature, especially poetry, even if that situation is slowly changing. Invariably, however, poetry is less frequently translated than prose, as shows the example of the greatest 20th-century Italian children writer, G. Rodari. The aim of this paper – preceded by an introductory theoretical treatise – is to discuss a unique collection of Rodari poems translated into Polish by J. Minkiewicz and published in 1956.

The article explores the problem of the representation of Venice in Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s poetry, starting from the short series “Tram Tickets,” from the mid-1920s, to the masterful “Ode on the Destruction of Venice,” a true farewell and poetic testament of the writer. This study seeks to define the characteristics of the city’s genius loci, tracing the relationships between romantic historicism, perceptual poetics, and the decadent aestheticism of Iwaszkiewicz. For the poet, Venice constituted a complex palimpsest where every added word necessarily had to be negotiated with a complex and cumbersome tradition of texts and images; every attempt to define the nature of the city implied a Sisyphean effort to find a pure and non-conditioned look. For this reason, he was convinced that Venice could be described only indirectly, through the rhetorical tools—similes, synaesthesia, metaphors —offered by poetic language. Iwaszkiewicz’s representation of Venice appears to be rooted in particular in the modernist tradition and in its complex network of cultural and symbolic references. The essay highlights the influence of John Keats and Aleksandr Blok, as well as the specific interpretation of the figures of Endymion and Salome, symbols of eternal youth and beauty, the myths on which the poetics of the Polish writer was based. Among all the cities that are reflected in Iwaszkiewicz’s works, Venice is the one that best expresses his conception of the crisis of European civilisation, awareness of the end of a historical period, and hope of a future palingenesis.

The author in this short essay introduces to the academic and scientific community an unpublished poem of Peter Arivabene, a learned poet who lived in the second half of the fifteenth century. The codex, which contains the poem is kept in the Library of Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza, where Prof. Orazio Antonio Bologna saw it for the first time on October 12th, 2012. Becoming acquainted with the contents of the codex and believing to give a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the poet, he transcribed, translated and published the contents of the codex. In this study, for the first time, Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene is mentioned as a poet, because Humanism and Renaissance’s scholars already knew him but only as the secretary of Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga and as the abbreviator and secretary in the Vatican curia from 1482, where he remained until 1491 under the popes’ service. The long poem, begun around 1459 when the poet was about 20 years old, was completed after the diet of Mantua, which ended on January 19th, 1460. The fine poem reveals a deep and refined culture even though there are uncertainties and redundancies peculiar to youth.

The present paper argues that the early Pythagoreans contributed significantly to the development of ancient hermeneutics. The article builds on the assumption that even if the thinkers did not deal with allegoresis directly, the very manner of articulating their thought was, nevertheless, quite conducive to the growth of allegorical interpretation. Thus, at least indirectly, Pythagoreanism must have played an important role in the development of allegoresis. The paper identifies two crucial aspects of Pythagorean influence on the allegorical tradition. Firstly, the Pythagoreans made a very specific use of the poetry of Homer and Hesiod as well as of the traditional mythology in general. Secondly, the teachings of Pythagoras were expressed in terms of various ambiguous symbols that required special exegesis. Both these factors must have contributed considerably to the development of allegoresis: the idiosyncratic use of conventional mythology, on the one hand, and the enigmatic nature of the Pythagorean symbols, on the other, must have provoked extensive search for the latent (i.e., “allegorical”) meaning of the “messages” in question.

The scope of the present article is to reflect upon the question of the environment within the context of the discussion concerning the use of dialect in the poetry of Pier Paolo Pasolini, Andrea Zanzotto, Nino De Vita and other poets from Sicily. Commencing from the concept of ‘diversity’, as intended by Pasolini as the disappearance of the rural world, which occurs in step with the eclipses of dialectal variety, the essay will demonstrate how the environment – the crucial focus of the poetry of the above mentioned poets – converges concepts of dialects, territoriality and animality. The ecocritical method, which is applied in this study, enables one to signal the urgency to reflect upon the situation of contemporary poetry, in particular of Sicilian poetry, which has its roots in Nino De Vita’s poetic works, inextricably tied to the place, the natural and the cultural context of the island. The new Sicilian poetry does not cancel ‘diversity’, which on the contrary is capable of confronting environmental issues – at times also beyond the island’s borders – and it feeds from the lymph, from the root of the dialect.

Auctor, innumeris inquisitionibus perfectis, duo tantum Ioannis Petri Arriuabeni inuenit carmina, quorum alteri In Pii summi Pontificis Laudem, Gonzagis titulus est alteri.
With this brief study, first the author deals with the poetry by Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene. In fact, for the first time he has published a long Latin poem of the poet preserved in a single manuscript in Pienza, in the library, which was of Pio II. The poet, who lived during the Renaissance, had a very careful preparation at the school of Francesco Filelfo, the most appreciated humanist after Enea Silvio Piccolomini. With the Carmen in Pii Pontificis laudem… Arrivabene hoped to enter in the courtyard of the Pope; but Pius II, even though he appreciated the poem, written on fine parchment, didn’t take the young poet into account, who was only twenty years. The scholar, on the one hand, thought back to the formation and the aspirations of the young poet, on the other the cultural character of his age, in which Giovanni Pietro Arrivabene spent his life. Short, but useful hints are devoted to the wonderful court of Mantua, where the poet spent twenty years at the service of the cardinal Francesco Gonzaga.
