Opis:
The article takes as its starting point Pavel Muratov’s book Images of Italy, considered a fundamental text for Polish accounts of travels to Italy in the 20th century. For the generation of Iwaszkiewicz and Herbert, a journey to Italy meant a true pilgrimage to “sacred places of culture”, accompanied by a strong sense of cultural inferiority. The next generation of Wojciech Karpiński and Ewa Bieńkowska treats the experience of a journey as a return to a common home, to the Italian that is European tradition marked with the great names of its predecessors. The youngest authors, Marek Zagańczyk and Adam Szczuciński, continue this tradition that may be called aesthetical, which is on the other hand contested by Dariusz Czaja, exploring another Italy little known to travellers – Calabria and, Basilicata – and opposing the model of a journey viewed as a continuous reference to others’ texts.

Opis:
The paper offers a contextual reflection on how the ‘Polish refugee’ figure is rendered in two examples of 19 th - and 20 th -century Italian literature. The paper opens with a brief discussion of the term ‘myth’ and its meanings in the age of Digital Humanities and proceeds to outline the literary and non-literary sources of the European myth of Poles as victims of foreign violence. Having given some attention to Edmondo de Amicis’s early poems addressing the 1863 uprising in Poland, the argument then focuses on his short story ‘Profughi polacchi’ (1863) as establishing the pattern of representing Polish emigrants in modern literature. Subsequently, the ways in which this narrative pattern changes in Edoardo Albinati’s novel "Polacco lavatore di vetri" (1998) are analysed to show that the idealised vision of the ‘refugee’ collapses. In conclusion, the dynamics of the presence and productivity of the myth in literature and in journalism are emphasised, and the differences in the handling of the myth in these two forms of writing are highlighted.

Opis:
The great speech of the Protagoras (320c–328d) still leaves many questions open. Particularly striking is the presence of doctrines that later on will be taken up and further developed by Plato in such dialogues as the Politicus, the Timaeus and the Laws. For this reason, many scholars tend to think that the words of Protagoras are just a product of Plato’s invention that bear no relation to Protagoras’ actual doctrines. Nevertheless, it is possible to propose a different interpretation. At the beginning of the Protagoras (313a–314b), Socrates develops the image of the sophist as the merchant of various μαθήματα: to sell his products, the sophist praises them all indiscriminately without knowing which of them are useful and which are harmful. But he who has the ability to make this distinction can still purchase the μαθήματα from Protagoras or anyone else. Through the dialectic, Plato is able to examine them without any danger in the Protagoras and then take them up and further develop in new ways in his later dialogues.
