Opis:: The present article is concerned with word formation and word formation exercises. In its theoretical part the article shows the role of word formation in foreign language teaching and learning as well as the state of the art in the research on word formation as a teaching resource. The article further presents the results of an empirical research into the evaluation of word formation practice exercises by learners of German as a foreign language.

Opis:: The aim of this paper is to present various empirical studies on word-formation, not within linguistic approach but in relation to learning and teaching of a foreign language. The paper largely concentrates on studies carried out among learners of German as a second language. The studies presented in this paper are based on teaching materials as well as students’ perspective in word-formation exercises. Based on presented approaches, certain faults in current studies were pointed out as well as new study areas proposed.

Opis:: Various forms of language-activity influence the acquisition of a foreign language. In this article, the author underlines the importance of foreign-language exercises, and their effectiveness in the developing the learner’s encoding of decoded foreign-language information structures in the form of constant structure-matrices. The theories of teaching and learning drawn on in the article point to the variety of methods and degrees of foreign-language acquisition, both through cognitive exercises and through the pattern approach. Such exercises develop receptive and productive language-communication skills.
