    The role of foreign language teaching at an early age is proving very important today for a variety of reasons. There are various approaches to this topic in the literature, many of which point out that in the development of the human brain, certain phases can be identified that should be taken into account in for¬eign language learning. These phases are referred to in the literature using the time window metaphor. The various aspects of language learning by young learners will be addressed in the volume published in 2019, the results of which will be presented in the paper.

    Opis:
    The objective of the article is to present some valid arguments for a “new” didactics of early foreign language teaching. The foreign language teaching in Poland has become an obligatory part of the curriculum in kindergartens and pre-schools (for 5 years-olds), and from the beginning of Sept. 2017 it will also concern all 3 and 4 years old children in pre-school education. Didactic principles and materials for teaching foreign languages that are applied in kindergartens are designed mainly for grade 1-3 of the primary school and cannot be automatically adopted for the earlier educational stages. The didactic process must be founded on linguistic and glottodidactic study of natural language acquisition, bilingualism and bilingual education. In the article some most important differences between the language learning process in the primary school and kindergarten are discussed and conclusions for the shaping of the language teaching and learning situation in pre-schools are drawn. In the last part some selected examples of the “new” teaching forms and activities will be presented.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest opracowanie autorskiego katalogu kryteriów pomocnego przy podejmowaniu decyzji o wyborze podręczników i materiałów dydaktycznych do nauki języków obcych na I etapie edukacyjnym. Katalog został sporządzony na podstawie analizy metodycznych założeń wczesnego nauczania języków obcych oraz kryteriów oceny podręczników na wyższych szczeblach edukacyjnych, które powinno się mieć na uwadze również przy ocenie materiałów dydaktycznych przeznaczonych do nauki języków obcych dzieci. Analiza zasad metodycznych skupia się przede wszystkich na zasadach kształcenia kompetencji językowej i odpowiednim doborze treści nauczania. Pozwala ona na wyciągnięcie wniosków, w jakim stopniu wybrany materiał dydaktyczny sprzyja odpowiedniemu rozwojowi języka obcego u dzieci i czy angażuje je emocjonalnie.
    The subject of the article is the development of a proprietary catalogue of criteria helpful in making decisions about the selection of textbooks and teaching materials for learning foreign languages at the first stage of education. The catalogue was prepared based on an analysis of the methodological assumptions of early foreign language teaching and the criteria for evaluating textbooks at higher levels of education, which should also be taken into account when assessing teaching materials intended for teaching foreign languages to children. The analysis of methodological principles focuses primarily on the principles of language competence education and the appropriate selection of teaching content. It allows concluding to what extent the selected didactic material supports the proper development of a foreign language in children and whether it engages them emotionally.
