Opis:
Narrative developments often stem from images in Dany Laferrière’s work. On the other hand, some of the narration in Laferrière’s fiction and nonfiction is synthesized in narrative snapshots that resemble descriptions. Temporal dimension plays a key role in this constant shift between image and imagination, because, as Didi-Huberman has shown, images carry an anachronistic element. This element also allows Laferrière and his narrators to use mainly simple present tense, even when the content of the narration is set in the past. Nevertheless, images are never explained or rationalized in Laferrière’s work, which keeps the mystery and ambiguity that characterize visual representations.

Opis:
Belgian novelist Marie Gevers lived all her life surrounded by venerable trees alongside a pond, in the gorgeous estate of Missembourg. Her imagination and sensibility were deeply impregnated by the changing of natural elements and seasons, which were enhanced as authentic characters in her literary work. Plaisir des météores (1938) is emblematic of this impregnation, being a personal and poetical rewriting of legendary almanacs, which invigorated less-literate populations in the remote countryside for centuries after the invention of the printing press. Enlightened by this particular tradition and an analysis of the author’s creative stylistic devices, season renewal appears as an everlasting dramaturgy, leading us to adapt ourselves to the world’s perpetual metamorphosis, in a pure Ode to Joy.

The division of human life into ages is not only a sociological issue but also includes a philosophical, moral and religious reflection. The relationship between human life and the course of the year punctuated by the seasons and months has not remained without influence on the very notion of the ages of life. The question that arises is whether we can harmonize the unpredictable flow of human life with the calendar. The confrontation of two medieval works which develop this parallel: the treatise by Philippe de Novare Les Quatre âges de l’homme, and the anonymous poem Les Douze mois figurez, should provide an answer to this question.

Opis:
In the 1913 edition of “Swann’s way,” the narrator’s grandparents’ village, Combray, is located in the Beauce (South-West from Paris). When Proust worked for a new edition in 1916, he moved Combray eastwards, to the Front in Champagne so that the war could take place in the novel. A large part of “Time regained” is about the war. The Baron of Charlus expresses Proust’s critique of nationalism. As a sensitive aesthete, he worries about the terrible killing going on, about men’s sufferings during an industrial war, and about the future of Europe. The church in Combray has been destroyed. The narrator’s grandmother considered its steeple as a symbol of plainness, elegance, and sensitivity. Its ruins become a symbol of sheer violence and inhumanity of wars. But Proust will rebuild it in his novel. Jorge Semprun, Varlam Chalamov and Joseph Czapski, prisoners in totalitarian states, remembered Proust’s humanism.

As a symbol of the passage of time, the hourglass is an important iconic element of vanitas paintings. It is also, in the 17th century, the object set on the pulpit of the Protestant preacher who, within the time limits of the hourglass, must exhort the faithful to make good use of their mortal life so they can expect eternal life. The theological and moral discourse of preachers is echoed in the aside sentences that recur in the texts about the little time left to the preacher to deliver his sermon, thus meaning that if human life is vanity, the very discourse conveying the idea must avoid it, banishing all hollow or swollen words, and remain within the limits of the hour-glass.

Opis:
The symbolism of axis mundi constitutes an integral part of cultural and religious systems across the world. Such symbolism appears clearly and precisely in all forms of religious life. As it is stressed by Eliade, many a time, axis mundi is an intersection of three varied ontological zones (the interior of the Earth, the surface of the Earth, and the Heaven) and creates a contact place of man with sacrum. The axis mundi symbolism, analysed here as a part of literary studies, is reflected also in two important novels by Julius Verne (Adventures of Captain Hatteras, 1864-65 ; An Arctic Mystery, 1897) dedicated to the polar regions. In both novels, such sites (the north-ern and southern poles) become a literary image of axis mundi, while the hypothesis finds its confirmation in the nature of psychological experiences of the heroes cast in the polar regions. The symbolic and religious study of such experiences leads to the conclusion that in both the analysed cases they may be understood as an experience of a contact with sacrum.

Opis:
The subversion of traditional narrative techniques is one of the main facets of the New Roman. Claude Simon, one of the leading novelists of this literary movement, inscribes his creations in this movement. La Route des Flandres (1960) is in this respect a fertile ground for the transgression of classical spatial aesthetics. In this novel, space is subverted by the way it confuses the reader who seems, like the characters, to be trapped in a labyrinthine road where terror and death reign. Lost in cosmic opacity, the characters are disoriented and desperately search for landmarks. This partly explains the importance of space-time, which appears to be an alternative for the protagonists of the novel to free themselves from the concrete limits of the ruined battlefield, to find themselves in the dream, the power of attorney, the remembrance and reminiscences. Thus, through portraits, letters, newspapers and pictorial paintings, the characters travel here and now, through the thought generated from these objects, in space-time.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to highlight – in a comparative approach – the versatility of the role of collectibles in the process of recollection among collectors in certain novels by Pascal Quignard. The analysis of the memorial discourse of collectors reveals two aspects: the different relationship to the value of the object (museum or intimate) and the power to trigger emotions. The discourse balances between an impersonal evocation, with emphasis on the material importance, the testimonial and aesthetic dimension of art objects from ancient times and a passionate and subjective description of small, banal objects, but charged with psychological meanings. The article demonstrates that excessively relating to time-/trace-objects by virtue of their documentary or commemorative value will lead to a failure of the memorisation process. Paradoxically, the collector always remains in search of the lost memory, despite the excess of material evidence he holds.

ARTIST – COPYIST Simon Hantai, Allen Ruppersberg, Bruno Di Rosa, Gérard Collin-Thiébaut, Sherrie Levine copied the Bible, philosophical and literary texts, (Walden, Henry David Thoreau, Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Journal Amiel ...). Following existing texts, these artists work looks like ‘banal, humble and mindless’ copyist work. Although in some cases copying is part of the painting – as in Peinture (Écriture rose) by Simon Hantai – produced mostly with a ballpoint pen on plain paper – as if the artists wanted to emphasize the trivial, time-consuming and monotonous nature of his/her effort and evoke the atmosphere of the school classroom of distant times. Allen Ruppersberg and Bruno Di Rosa indeed refer to school experience, when they declare that rewriting allowed them to ‘learn how to write’, just as copying masters allow beginners to learn to paint. But while copying allows us to establish organic relationship with the text, then the process of copying the text is not about maintaining certain tradition: it is rather about the role that language plays in the field of visual arts starting from the sixties. It contributes to the revaluation of values usually connected with art-pieces, such as originality, expression of subjectivity, etc. In numerous comments provoked by the copyist who appears in literature (Bouvard et Pécuchet, Bartleby ...), there is a subversive nature of this labor-intensive and mechanical actions – when it is practiced in art. Copying is a long-term job; successive lines of letters fill the pages of notebooks, creating a ‘full-bodied’ art-piece in the literal sense of the word. The quantitative aspect is carried out in various ways. If the point is to visualize the copy of an entire novel, and in order to embed the importance of work for systematic and ‘mandatory’ implementation, or in order to reach make more opportunity than necessity – copying allows us to experience the passage of time: the time that is spent on this completely anachronistic act ; time spent without any justification.

Mali of the past and today is different on several levels. If territorial fixity seems to be erected in absolute value in the text of Maryse Condé, the travel account of François-Xavier Freland invalidates the immutability of the spaces represented. Relying on the intellectual mechanics of "founding myths" of the empires of the time, Condé delegates characters who extol the virtues of territorial immobility, considering that Ségou and Toumbouctou are eternal. But the flow of time has brought several changes to the Malian space, namely a geopolitical crisis brought about by Libyan chaos and a pervasive jihadist threat.

The French nouveau roman is characterised by lack of numerous elements typical of the traditional, commonly called Balzacian, novel. This lack involves the rejection of plot, omniscient narrator, psychological, moral and ideological factors, social and political engagement, the decomposition of character, the indeterminacy and gradual implosion of time and space as well as the text generation based on some lack or void. The aim of the article is to present these missing elements of the represented world and to discuss their functions in the works of leading practitioners of the nouveau roman, such as Samuel Beckett (predecessor), Michel Butor, Marguerite Duras, Robert Pinget, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute and Claude Simon.
