Opis:
Considering poetry as a literary form in close relation with absence and scarcity; this paper deals with some of the most frequent and significant forms of absence that appear in poetic texts. The physical absence of the other, due either to death or to the distance between the two individuals, is the most common kind in lyric poetry. Modern poetry often deals with Gods’ absence, which represents an important loss for the contemporary human being, trying to understand or face it. There is also the lack of inspiration and words with efficient expressive capacity that make poets suffer. However, poetry is the only way in which they express their situation and create a meaningful language. Finally, absence in poetry is also a fundamental sign of its generic specificity in connection with the means that it uses, as well as with its printed representation on paper, especially in the contemporary production. In all cases, poetry, based on the dialectic of being – not being, operates as a material, sensible and intellectual presence, which like the primordial logos fillsthe vacuum, eliminates absence and scarcity, generates and animates the human world and en-riches it with presence and meaning.

Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
The paper examines a special place that the characters of Ophelia and Narcissus, so closely connected with the motif of water, occupy in the poetic imaginarium of George Rodenbach. What we deal with here is an unhealthy obsession within which two characters of literature and mythology, unhappily in love, are presented as two alter egos of the poet himself. An endless sequence of images associating water with death reveals the fascination and trepidation of the symbolist, who uses the Opheliac depths and Narcissus’s water mirror as a reflection of different states of his soul.

The German occupation of France during the Great War has long been buried beneath the memory of the Occupation of 1940-1944. It is only very recently that it has begun to be studied seriously by historians: This article considers the role of poetry in the Ardennes, the only French département to be completely occupied for the entire duration of the conflict. Here we see how poetry, among other cultural forms, is instrumentalised by the German occupier, notably in its French language propaganda newspaper, La Gazette des Ardennes, in order to promote defeatism and collaboration. On the other hand, exiled tounoccupied France, the Ardennais poet Henri Dacremont produces a conventionally patriotic poetry tinged with regionalism. This « engagée » poetry contrasts with the more contemplative and melancholy verse of Marie-Louise Dromart, which will only published after the deliverance of her home region.

Opis:
The article concerns the place of corporeality in the poetry of a Maurician francophone poet Umar Timol. One can distinguish four main attitudes towards the human body in Timol’s texts: body as an object of worship or – on the contrary – of disdain and condemnation, body as a humanitarian challenge and as an object of self-reflection. The absence of typically Western dualism of physical versus spiritual in Mauritian poet’s philosophy procures a new and exotic perspective for European readers. The author ponders the purpose and motifs which could stay behind such standpoints mainly by analysing the poems in the context of Mauritian culture and comparing them to other Muslim or Indian texts.

In 1961 Philippe Jaccottet wrote: "The best answer to all kinds of questions is the poem’s very absence of a response". In keeping with the elusive nature of the world, abandoned by the gods and by God, the poem remains mysterious, thus trans-lating as well as preserving the inexhaustible richness of Nature and human beings. So the poet not only accepts such a precarious situation, but learns from it. Nevertheless, when someone dear dies, the poet tends to deny the absence of the loved one and revolts against it, since there no longer are any signs of presence: merely incomprehensible absence. Yet he chooses to bear witness, even if he remains ignorant and weak. In effect, this is a duty: poetry provides a link which enables the separation to avoid becoming a definitive absence. Words are repairing shuttles.

Ramuz presented his vision of literary art in diverse works, paying special attention to the diversity of the external world, whose mystery both a poet and a painter attempt to capture into a synthetic reflection, which is not just a mere copy of the reality. If Ramuz as a young poet, before he became a novelist, recognised his own poetic mission in Paris, then Paris itself, as later described in a short essay Paris (notes d’un Vaudois), appears to be the urban metaphor of his poetic ideal. This phenomenon testifies to the auto-analytical value of works by Ramuz. In particular, the Paris evoked in the essay mentioned above reveals the metaphysical vision of the poet, fascinated with the principle of unity, reflected in his works as well as the external world.

Opis:
This paper puts forward a reflection upon the status of Theodore de Banville in the literary Pantheon by making an attempt to determine the proportions of art and artisanry in his poetic work. While Banville deserves to be referred to as an artist, providing the term is based on the 19th century definition, the name of an artisan, so often used with reference to his person by critics and literary historians might also be justified. Looking at Banville’s work more closely, analyzing the role of his creative inspiration and patiently built text structure, observing the importance attached by the author to the versification techniques, his love for technical difficulty, his meticulousness and his writing skills, but also the frequency with which he creates images and metaphors referring to what was previously called ‘mechanical arts’, long story short, taking into account everything that falls under the category of poetic techniques, the answer to the question posed in the title of the paper, whether Banville was an artist or an artisan, is that he was both.

Sensitive to all the nuances, attentive observer, Marie Krysinska thinks deeply about the human condition. One of its components is wandering − in every sense of the word. The wandering, physical and psychological, is a natural state of man. Wandering in imagination, in memory, expatriation, evaluation mistakes… The absoluteness of wandering can put the sign of equality between wandering and imagination. Imaginative ability determines the existence of the human being. I wander, you wander, they wander − in the poetry of Krysinska man is combined with all sorts of wandering. To wander means here to look, to try to answer the cardinal questions of human existence.

Opis:
This paper confronts versified positivist propaganda (Du Camp) with lyrical and visionary prose of Saint-Simon’s followers (Duveyrier). Taking as the point of departure Baudelaire’s judgment about the incompatibility between poetry and didacticism, this paper queries the status and aesthetic value of social poetry. The working class poetry (One hundred small miseries, Social work) is full of vitality of the popular style, replete with humorous energy and fantasy, whereas the socialist fable (Lachambeaudie) expresses a lot of empathy. Under the positivist prophets’ pen, the disciplines – religion, architecture, poetry, mathematics – are not separated but analogous and convertible. According to these thinkers, there is no difference between a poem, picture of the ideal city and utopia itself. Social innovation can only be told by the innovative form of the urban prose poem, and the Industrial Revolution calls for a revolution of poetic forms. The poeticity of these texts, inversely proportional to the realism and to the specialization of the lexicon used, stems from the art of suggestion and the rise of imagination renewed by technical, urban and scientific modernity.

Opis:
In the present article an attempt is made to describe the use of fairy tale in catastrophist poetry, focusing more specifically on Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński and Tadeusz Gajcy’s works. Both poets allude to the despair of the Second World War by contrasting the idyllic Arcadia of fairytale world with the hopeless universe of the apocalyptic reality. Unconnected with the reality, fairy tale may seem unattainable, like an unseizable dream. But it can also be the victim of the omnipresent evil of the war and decomposes from the inside, unable to avoid its baleful power. A careful analysis of Baczyński and Gajcy’s works shows that this subtle relationship between fairy tale and evil or death recurs in their poetry, and is even widespread in their period. The popularity of this strategy raises therefore the question of the existence of a separate category that could be called ‘catastrophist fairy tale’. The paper is divided into three parts: the first part is devoted to Baczyński, the second one — to Gajcy and the third one offers a synthetic reflection on the notion of ‘catastrophist fairy tale’.

This article analyses the essence and roles of silence in the œuvres of Mallarmé and Valéry. The Mallarmé’s musicality gradually gives way to the silent music of words; poetry is becoming spatial and takes the form of the music score. In the poem Coup de dés it gets up to the incarnation of silence which shows the ideal of the Mallarmé’s musicality; the ideal in which an eye serves to listen. The theme of music and silence reappears in the Valery’s œuvre. In spite of the connection between music and architecture, which can incarnate silence, poetry uses the subjectivism of music and the ambiguity of silence to achieve the ideal of pure art which is hidden in the artist’s interior. Silence as nothingness is the starting point for poetry whereas non-incarnated silence can express the mystical sense of poetry

The hybridity that is seen everywhere in symbolist poetry is not so much evidence of a temporary trend of the era following the interest in the crossing of species in nature as much as it is an attempt to confront the very nature of “art” itself. The time of the “quarrel of monsters” has passed, and the hybrids of contemporary poetry – competing for a place in the mythological scene that is symbolism – roam guiltless. And yet, beyond literary conventions, this mythological bestiary is anything but innocent and outdated; in fact, it embodies a genuine mythopoetic repertoire. For Mallarmé in particular, this hybrid bestiary reflects the illusive “Chimera” of poetry.

Opis:
Throughout history, vagrancy appears as one of the notions of the Human Condition. Its artistic and poetical representations are drawn from multiple sources and offer various models. The fantasy of vagrancy in French poetry in the second half of the Nineteenth Century is fashioned as much through the vagrant’s relationship with space as with Society. Its models spring from marginality and contestation. Spatial structure presents an opposition between « closed » and « open », « interior » and « exterior », and so forth... These separations fluctuate and interact mutually. The poet conjures, from any questing, marginal figure, his own image. The general tendency, from Hugo to Rimbaud, shows both a crushing of the poetical figure, transforming it into a magus or a prophet, and the proliferation of the accursed poet’s « negating anger ».
