Opis:
Objectives There is a need for up-to-date research on health-care and social managers’ work well-being. The purpose was to develop a questionnaire for measuring health-care and social managers’ subjective work well-being and to determine whether their background factors are connected to their work well-being. Material and Methods The authors developed a questionnaire based on their previous health-care and social managers’ work well-being framework. It covers 5 separate categories: 1) individual factors, 2) social factors, 3) professional support from one’s own manager, 4) organizational factors, and 5) work-related factors. Using statistical methods, the authors examined the questionnaire’s internal validity, its fit with the framework, and the connections between several background factors and work well-being. The survey data (N = 281) were collected from South Osthrobothnia and Central Osthrobothnia in Finland. Results The questionnaire’s internal validity was good, and it fit rather well with the authors’ previous framework. Managers’ work well-being was highest for the category of “professional support from one’s own manager” and lowest for “organizational factors.” The authors found connections between different categories of work well-being and a) years of managerial experience, b) level of management, and c) occupational group. Conclusions The questionnaire gives a holistic view of managers’ work well-being and is suit- able for measuring work well-being in the social- and health-care context. An examination showed that there is a need to improve the individual situations of the social- and health-care managers. The questionnaire can be used to assess managers’ work well-being and to build a knowledge base for developing organizational policies.

The main aim of this study was to develop a short questionnaire to assess work-related well-being from the organizational behaviour perspective. The short well-being questionnaire enables measuring longitudinal work-related well-being. Work-related well-being was assessed with a 147-item questionnaire covering both organizational and intrinsic factors of work-related well-being. The questionnaire consisted of 27 categories. The respondents were 114 women (65%) and 62 men (35%), mean age 39.2 years, in various occupations. From the extensive questionnaire a shorter questionnaire with 33 items was developed by principal component analysis. The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure to test the sampling adequacy of 27 factor solutions varied from .62 to .91 and Cronbachʼs α was .74–.94. Most κ values of the shorter questionnaire were .50–.94 (p < .001). The reliability of the short version was comparable to that of the original questionnaire. The short one could also be suitable for Internet and mobile questionnaire applications.

Objectives The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and the level of complementary and supplementary person–organization fit (P–O fit). Material and Methods The study sample was a group of 600 Polish workers, urban residents aged 19–65. Level of P–O fit was measured using the Subjective Person–Organization Fit Questionnaire by Czarnota-Bojarska. The binomial multivariate logistic regression was applied. The analyzes were performed separately for the men and women. Results Socio-demographic variables explained small percentage of the outcome variability. Gender differences were found. In the case of men shift work decreased complementary and supplementary fit, while long working hours decreased complementary fit. In the women, age was a stimulant of a complementary fit, involuntary job losses predicted both complementary and supplementary misfit. Additionally, relational responsibilities increased probability of supplementary P–O fit in the men. Conclusions Going beyond personality and competences as the factors affecting P–O fit will allow development of a more accurate prediction of P–O fit. Objectives The aim of the present study was to assess both the direct and indirect effects (i.e., interacting with various job demands) of skill discretion on various psychological outcomes (i.e., emotional exhaustion, intention to leave, affective well-being, and job satisfaction). Material and Methods Data were collected by a self-reported questionnaire in 3 hospitals in Italy. The sample consisted of 522 nurses. Moderated hierarchical regression analyses were employed. Results The findings highlighted the direct effect of skill discretion on reducing emotional exhaustion, intention to leave, sustaining affective well-being and job satisfaction. As regards interaction effect, the analyses indicated that skill discretion moderates the negative effect of disproportionate patient expectations on all the considered psychological outcomes. On the other hand, skill discretion was found to moderate the effect of cognitive demands on turnover intention as well as the effect of quantitative demands on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction only in conditions of low job demands. Conclusions The study revealed some interesting findings, suggesting that skill discretion is not a resource in the pure sense, but that it also has some characteristics of a job demand. The study has relevant practical implications. Particularly, from a job design point of view, the present study suggests that job demands and skill discretion should be balanced carefully in order to sustain job well-being and worker retention.

Two studies were performed to test the relationship between readiness for self-improvement (consisting of two components: readiness to improve oneself and readiness to take care of one’s health) and selected measures of well-being. The first study investigated whether readiness for self-improvement is related to the selected measures of overall subjective well-being (or life satisfaction). The second one investigated in what way readiness for self-improvement is related to subjective well-being at workplace (or work engagement). The results obtained in both cases showed that readiness for self-improvement is indeed related to and does account for well-being. In the first study, readiness for self-improvement (i.e. readiness to improve oneself) accounted for overall life satisfaction within important human life domains and satisfaction with the present and future life. In the second study, work engagement, was significantly linked to readiness to improve oneself but was not with readiness to take care of one’s health.

This paper describes the results of a study that examined if psychological entitlement and hedonic well-being mediated relationships between counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) and grandiose narcissism. More specifically, the mediation effects of both types of narcissism on CWB via psychological entitlement and hedonistic subjective well-being (SWB) were examined. This study is based on self-reported, cross-sectional study on 119 working adults. Agentic and communal narcissism were positively related to CWB in parallel way, while simultaneously and indirectly decreasing CWB levels via higher SWB. Current paper is the first attempt to include agentic-communal narcissism model to explain the levels of CWB. The theoretical and practical implications of presented findings are discussed here in terms of the agency-communion model of narcissism and the “mixed blessing” effects of grandiose narcissism on subjective well-being.

Opis:
Background: So far, studies based on the dualistic model of passion have ignored how the 2 different types of passion interact in a person’s identity. The aim of this article is to identify profiles of passion for work and their consequences for psychological well-being. Material and Methods: The survey was conducted on a sample of 522 employees of various employment sectors. The Passion Scale was used to assess passion for work, while to explore well-being, the anxiety and depression subscale of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) and the Subjective Vitality Scale were employed. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to distinguish the passion profiles, following which the results regarding well-being in the following groups were compared using non-parametric tests. Results: Four passion profiles have been identified. They are termed as high-moderate (profile 1: high harmonious passion for work and moderate obsessive passion for work), high (profile 2: high harmonious passion for work and obsessive passion for work), optimal (profile 3: high harmonious passion for work and low obsessive passion for work), and low (profile 4: low harmonious passion for work and low obsessive passion for work). Employees with a low score for both harmonious passion for work and obsessive passion for work had the lowest score regarding well-being. Conclusions: This study was one of the first to use the LPA approach to explore the configuration of passion for work. It provided an indication of how the different dimensions and levels of passion set up with each other and what their consequences would be. The conducted research emphasized the protective role of the harmonious passion for work against the negative effect of obsessive passion for work.

Opis:
Background: Nurses displayed low levels of subjective well-being and high turnover intention. How to enhance the subjective well-being and decrease the turnover rate of nurses is of great importance. However, little is known about whether work engagement mediates between character strengths and subjective well-being. The study aims to explore character strengths, work engagement and subjective well-being in nurses, and to determine whether work engagement plays a mediating role between the relationship. Material and Methods: From December 2017 to December 2018, 450 Chinese registered nurses completed the character strengths scale, work engagement scale, and subjective well-being scale. The relationship between study variables was tested by Pearson correlation. The mediating effect of work engagement was tested by the bootstrap method. Results: The results indicated the following: (1) the 4 elements of character strengths and work engagement were significantly and positively correlated with subjective well-being; (2) character strengths could significantly predict both work engagement and subjective well-being; (3) work engagement played a mediating role in this relationship. Conclusions: Character strengths affect subjective well-being in Chinese registered nurses, and work engagement plays a mediating variable among the relations. Therefore, nurses are encouraged to foster their character strengths and improve their level of work engagement for their subjective well-being. Following the results, the study recommends that nursing managers be aware of the importance of using character strengths in nursing work, taking actions to excavate nurses’ character strengths and encouraging nurses to use character strengths in clinical work to promote engagement and well-being. In the meantime, interventions to improve the level of subjective well-being based on nurses’ character strengths should be considered.

Aim: The main aim of this article is to identify negative health consequences resulting from work overload and lack of work-life balance, as well as to present characteristics of positive healthy behaviors in the workplace as counteracting strategies. The paper is a part of the discussion on the concept of corporate wellness which forms the basis for the development of organization’s health culture.Design / Research methods: The paper is based on a review of literature concerned with the factors influencing worker welfare. Moreover, it presents two case studies on comprehensive health programs implemented by Mars Poland and the Belgian branch of Protect & Gamble. Conclusions / findings: Based on the review of foreign and domestic literature, the authors propose a model describing the relationship between individual variables impacting worker welfare. In this model, it is assumed that the interaction between work and life, and workers’ healthy behaviors such as physical activity and rest after work (sleep) are crucial to workers’ regeneration.Originality / value of the article: The value of the paper lies in the interdisciplinary approach to the development of worker well-being. Apart from the perspective of human resources management, the outlined concept also takes into account the issues relating to workers’ mental and physical health.Implications of the research: The theoretical assumptions presented in the paper will become a starting point for a research project to be conducted on Polish enterprises. Its objective will be to identify the possibilities of counteracting the negative effects of workload congestion through the promotion of healthy behaviors in the workplace and support of workers in their creation of a positive work-life interaction.

Artykuł przedstawia polską adaptację skali do pomiaru konfliktu Praca-Dom (WFC) i Dom-Praca (FWC) autorstwa Dawn Carlson i współpracowników (2000).

The study concerns the moderating role of two variables - hardiness and social support - in the relation between job stressors and well-being. It was checked if there is a connection between hardiness and social support, and if these variables are directly related to the level of well-being. It was also hypothesized that hardiness and social support buffer the negative influence of stressors on well-being. The fact that social support and well-being are multidimensional variables was taken into account. The cross-sectional study was conducted on a group of 200 women employed as office workers. The results showed that hardiness correlates with the indexes of emotional support as well as practical support coming from supervisors. The connection, however, was not strong. Hardiness and social support were directly connected with the level of well-being. Interaction of these two independent variables played a marginal role. As far as the buffering role of these variables was concerned, the results have shown that hardiness did not play a buffering role and social support did to a limited degree only. The results of the study proved that it is justifiable to treat social support and well-being as multidimensional variables.

Opis:
Change is inevitable but often provokes negative reactions among employees and promotes resistance. Knowledge of the causes of resistance increases the possibility of making appropriate managerial decisions in the change management process and mitigating the rejection of change. In the last decade, Lithuanian colleges operated under the conditions of ongoing reforms. Implemented reforms particularly affect the country’s regional colleges experiencing strong external pressure to look for ways of effective operation in fairly difficult conditions, focusing on revenue increases, reductions in expenditure and assurance of the quality of studies. The shortage of potential students, which is related to the steadily declining number of school graduates in the regions, in turn leading to teacher workload reduction, also poses quite a serious threat. The purpose of the study is to identify employee acceptance of change, reduce resistance to it, increase work engagement and strengthen organizational commitment. The research results show that in the case of this sample, work engagement, change management practices and organizational commitment have the greatest impact on employee acceptance of the change. Organizational commitment is related to work engagement by a strong correlation relationship. It is concluded that (1) better acceptance of change depends on participation and work engagement, (2) change management practices depend on change seeking, reaction to change and organizational commitment, (3) organizational commitment depends on cognitive flexibility, communication, participation, individual attention, and work engagement, in turn, (4) work engagement depends on predisposition to change, change seeking, reaction to change, and organizational commitment.
