Accidents at work and occupational diseases have a negative impact not only on the psychophysical condition of employees and the image of the company, but also, above all, on productivity, and thus on social and economic development. Ensuring safe and hygienic working conditions is the responsibility of every employer but without additional forms of support it does not suffice to prevent and stop accidents at work. The employer should constantly implement measures to improve safety so as to prevent accidents at work. One of such activities may be to promote safe and healthy working conditions. It is a program that allows raising employees’ awareness and knowledge about occupational hazards and risks related to their work, as well as about methods of protection against effects of these hazards and risks. The purpose of the article is to present the concept of promotion and its tools in popularizing safe and hygienic working conditions. The article is also an attempt to answer, on the basis of the results of surveys conducted in the form of individual reviews, the question whether the promotion of safe and hygienic working conditions improves the safety of employees, reduces or eliminates accidents at work, and broadens employees’ knowledge.

Opis:
Background The objective of the study has been to evaluate the pathogenic bacteria contamination of touch surfaces in hospital wards. Material and Methods Samples were taken from frequently touched surfaces in the hospital environment in 13 units of various types. Culturing was carried out on solid blood agar and in growth broth (tryptic soy broth – TSB). Species identification was performed using the analytical profile index (API) biochemical testing and confirmed with matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) system. Results The total of 161 samples were taken for the study. Fifty-two of them, after 24 h of culture on a solid medium, demonstrated bacterial growth and further 60 samples had growth after prior multiplication in TSB. Overall, 69.6% of samples exhibited growth of 19 bacterial species. Pathogenic species – representing indicator organisms of efficiency of hospital cleaning – was demonstrated by 21.4% of samples. Among them Acinetobacter spp., Enterocococci spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were identified. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were predominant. The proportion of various groups of bacteria significantly varied in respective hospitals, and in various types of wards. Disturbing observation is a large proportion of resistance of isolated CNS strains as a potential reservoir of resistance genes. Conclusions The results show that touch surfaces in hospital units are contaminated by both potentially pathogenic and pathogenic bacterial species. In connection with the reported, also in Poland, frequent omission or incorrect execution of hand hygiene by hospital staff, and probably patients, touch surfaces still constitute important reservoir of pathogenic bacteria. Improving hand hygiene compliance of health-care workers with recommendations is necessary for increasing biological safety of hospital environment. Med Pr 2017;68(3):459–467

By work injury, a health damage or employee´s decease are meant if those were caused independently on employee´s will by short-period, accidental and violent effect of external impacts while fulfilling working tasks or directly related to it. Also such injury is considered a work injury, which happened when the employee fulfilled his/her working tasks. Legal regulation of the rights and obligations of employers as well as employees as it comes to occupational injuries is being often ignored by both parties of labour-law relationship. In fact, insufficient knowledge of this topic can bring many complications to both parties. It is necessary to keep in mind that not each injury can be considered work injury. The aim of this article is to analyze legal aspects of work injury supported by judicature and statistical data out of segment of work injuries in the Czech Republic. The law is not always clear and allows different explanation, as it also does not consider all situations and questions. Answers to problematic points are more and more often being found in judicature - deciding practice of courts, its conclusions, explanations and statements are evaluated. There is an example of injury happened during a business trip used in this article, by which it will be explained what activities can be thought such relating to working tasks fulfilment. When work injury occurs, the employer is obligated to clarify the reasons and circumstances of it. A monitoring of statistical data of work injuries and their causes seems to be a significant basis when elaborating company risk analyzes, prevention and risk management, occupational health and safety, working conditions and environment.

The paper examines a situation in which an employee is entitled to terminate the contract of employment without prior notice. The case under examination occurs when the employer commits a serious violation of workers’ rights by failing to provide safe and hygienic working conditions. The paper also presents topic related controversies that have arisen in the doctrine and judicature and tries to establish at which point one may speak of a breach of fundamental labour rights and on the basis of which regulations the employer may be held liable. The authors also try to determine whether certain situations could constitute a basis for termination of the employment contract by the employee, at the same time giving rise to the right to claim damages from the employer. Other issues touched upon in the paper include the absence of a catalogue of infringements in the Polish Labour Code and the way of assessing the weight of various infringements.

Opis:
Background Presented information about the welding process and equipment, focusing on the emission of electromagnetic field (EMF) with levels significant in terms of the labor safety regulations in force in Poland – the ordinances of the Minister of Family, Labour and Social Policy that came into force on June 27, 2016 and June 29, 2016 – emerged due to harmonization with European Union directive 2013/35/EU of 26 June 2013 of the European Parliament and the Council. They presented methods of determination of the EMF distribution in the welding machine surroundings and analyzed the background knowledge from the available literature. Material and Methods The subject of the analysis included popular high frequency welders widely used in the industry. Electromagnetic field measurements were performed in the welder operating place (in situ) during machine normal operations, using measurement methods accordant with labor safety regulations in force in Poland and according to the same guidelines, the EMF distributions and parameters having been described. Results They presented various scenarios of particular, real examples of excessive exposure to EMF in the dielectric welder surroundings and showed solutions, ranging from simple and costless and ending on dedicated electromagnetic shielding systems, which allowed to reduce EMF exposure in some cases of more than 80% (protection zone ranges) or eliminate dangerous zone presence. Conclusions It has shown that in the dielectric welders surrounding, significant EMF strength levels may be the result of errors or omissions which often occur during development, installation, operation or modification of welding machines. It has allowed to present the measures that may significantly reduce the exposure to EMF of workers in the welder surroundings. The role of accredited laboratories in helping in such cases was underlined. Med Pr 2017;68(6):693–703

The Italian response to the Covid-19 crisis involved a general lockdown of all nonessential activities, accompanied by significant labour law and social security measures. The overall idea behind the Government’s action has been that of safeguarding, as far as practicable, the employment level and workers/families income, notwithstanding the sharp slowdown of business and professional activities. For that purpose, a temporary block of dismissals for economic reasons has been issued, combined with an almost mandatory use of remote work, whenever feasible, and a massive recourseto short-time work compensation schemes. Other measures have involved financial support for the self-employed, extraordinary leaves for parents to cope with schools closure, and special health and safety measures when work is to be performed within the employer’s premises.

Cold is a typical environmental risk factor in outdoor work in northern regions. It should be taken into account in a company’s occupational safety, health and quality systems. A development process for improving cold risk management at the Finnish Maritime Administration (FMA) was carried out by FMA and external experts. FMA was to implement it. Three years after the development phase, the outcomes and implementation were evaluated. The study shows increased awareness about cold work and few concrete improvements. Concrete improvements in occupational safety and health practices could be seen in the pilot group. However, organization-wide implementation was insufficient, the main reasons being no organization-wide practices, unclear process ownership, no resources or a major reorganization process. The study shows a clear need for expertise supporting implementation. The study also presents a matrix for analyzing the process.

Objectives: Occupational accidents constitute a substantial health and economic burden for societies around the world and a variety of factors determine the frequency of accidents at work. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the economic situation and the rate of occupational accidents in Poland. Material and Methods: The analysis comprised data for 66 Polish sub-regions taken from the Central Statistical Office’s Local Data Bank. The regression analysis with panel data for period 2002–2014 was applied to identify the relationships involved. Four measures of accidents were used: the rates of total occupational accidents, accidents among men and women separately as well as days of incapacity to work due to accidents at work per employee. Four alternative measures assessed the economic situation: gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, average remuneration, the unemployment rate and number of dwelling permits. The confounding variables included were: employment in hazardous conditions and the size of enterprises. Results: The results of the regression estimates show that the number of occupational accidents in Poland exhibits procyclical behavior, which means that more accidents are observed during the times of economic expansion. Stronger relationships were observed in the equations explaining men’s accident rates as well as total rates. A weaker and not always statistically significant impact of economic situation was identified for women’s accident rates and days of incapacity to work. Conclusions: The results have important implications for occupational health and safety actions. In the periods of higher work intensity employers should focus on appropriate training and supervision of inexperienced workers as well as on ensuring enough time for already experienced employees to recuperate. In terms of public health actions, policy makers should focus on scrutinizing working conditions, educating employers and counteracting possible discrimination of injured employees. The paper focuses on the analysis of the impact of technical, organizational and human factors on accident rate in small-sized enterprises. The research was carried out using the authors’ questionnaire. The results were verified using the method of direct interview with elements of observation. The results were compared with the trends prevailing in enterprises of EU countries. The respondents, i.e. production company workers, indicate technical factors as those which most significantly affect the occurrence of accidents at work. However, the assessment of the factors changes with the age of the respondents. Older workers, more often than younger employees, indicate the ones related to man or work organization as the most important factors affecting accidents at work and, consequently, the level of occupational safety. The presented results are a part of a larger whole project the authors of this paper are working on.
