Opis:
The objective of this article will be both the theoretical and the practical analysis of the use of the selected English lexical and function words (to, there, before) by Polish users of English representing different proficiency levels. The practical part, in particular, will concern the use of the afore-mentioned, selected words comprising both categories based on the available corpus of L2 users (PELCRA – PLEC). The first acronym refers to Polish and English Language and Corpora for Research and Applications (PELCRA), which is the result of scientific work of the scholars from the University of Łódź. The other one (PLEC), stands for PELCRA English Learner Corpus (see the Bibliography section below). It is commonly known that learners/ students may demonstrate their awareness and professional knowledge with reference to the basic use and comprehension of words in their primary meaning, namely lexical words. The problems arise when they need to confront their current knowledge and awareness while discovering that some words are ambiguous or polysemous. Hence the idea of such research, the intention of which is to validate the students’ performance when faced with words, which are only seemingly simple and predictable.

Blanched-Sadri and Woodhouse in 2013 have proven the conjecture of Cassaigne, stating that any pattern with \(m\) distinct variables and of length at least \(2^m\) is avoidable over a ternary alphabet and if the length is at least \(3\cdot 2^{m-1}\) it is avoidable over a binary alphabet. They conjectured that similar theorems are true for partial words – sequences, in which some characters are left “blank”. Using method of entropy compression, we obtain the partial words version of the theorem for ternary words.

Opis:
The notion of HEAD is reflected in the basic lexicon of all known languages; the identification of the head as a distinct and vitally important body part, labelled with a simplex word, seems to be a cross-cultural universal. Thanks to their high frequency of use and their “basic concept” status, words meaning ‘head’ tend to be diachronically stable and therefore important for comparative reconstruction. Their expected retention rate – as estimated on the basis of data from several uncontroversial language families – is on a par with words meaning ‘heart’ or ‘foot’. On the other hand, culture-specific factors may lead to the proliferation of secondary meanings, the rise of stylistically marked near-synonyms, and consequently to locally accelerated lexical evolution. This seems to have happened repeatedly in the Indo-European family, in which not only the oldest reconstructible ‘head’ word, *ḱreh₂- but also secondary, branch-specific terms have often been subject to lexical replacement. This unusual variability of words for head in Indo-European contrasts with the remarkable conservatism of words for several other body-part concepts, such as eye, ear, tooth and heart. In this paper, we shall attempt to identify recurrent patterns of semantic change in the emergence of new synonyms and the polysemic development of inherited ‘head’ words. Insights derived from recent studies of “embodiment” will be used to explain the observed tendencies.

Slavic Loanwords in the Terms for Dumplings in LatvianFood is an essential part of the material culture of every nation. It frequently preserves national traditions and old names longer than other spheres do, additionally, it lets observe the influence of other cultures. According to dictionary data, dumplings were known in Latvia already in the 18th century. Many names for them have been attested in regional subdialects of Latvian; borrowings usually cover wide areas. In this article, basing on ethnographic and linguistic material notations of different antiquity thus tracing the use of names for dumplings almost a century long and referring to dictionary data from 18th–19th century, the author tried to reveal the use and distribution of names for dumplings of Slavic origin in subdialects of Latvian, as well as to offer fragmentary data on the use of particular Slavic borrowings in neighboring languages. The Slavic borrowings kļocka, zacirka alongside variant names are widespread in Eastern Latvia, i.e. in a rather narrow or wide area of the High Latvian dialect. In Eastern Latvia, the names klučki, klučkas derived from the Germanic borrowing kluči, with insertion of the consonant k under influence of Russian, have also been registered. From the semantic angle, the borrowings kļockas, klučkas and their variants are denoting dumplings made of various raw materials (e.g., different kinds of flour, also pea-flour, potatoes). Further references to ingredients of this food and its preparation are included in the explanation of the Slavic borrowing zacirka and its variants most typical for the peasants vocabulary in Latgale. The Slavic borrowings examined in this article have not seldom (even up to the last decades of the 20th century) been serving as the only names of the said dish in the speech of representants of the oldest generation in the particular area in Eastern Latvia. Słowiańskie zapożyczenia wśród nazw pierogów w języku łotewskim Żywność stanowi zasadniczą część kultury materialnej każdego narodu. Nazwy związane z nią często zachowują narodowe tradycje i dawne nazwy dłużej, niż to ma miejsce w innych sferach, a ponadto umożliwiają zaobserwowanie wpływu innych kultur.

We show how Zadeh’s idea of computing with words and perceptions, based on his concept of a precisiated natural language (PNL), can lead to a new direction in the use of natural language in data mining, linguistic data(base) summaries. We emphasize the relevance of Zadeh’s another idea, that of a protoform, and show that various types of Yager type linguistic data summaries may be viewed as items in a hierarchy of protoforms of summaries. We briefly present an implementation for a sales database of a computer retailer as a convincing example that these tools and techniques are implementable and functional. These summaries involve both data from an internal database of the company and data downloaded from external databases via the Internet.

An age appropriate, research-based systematic program that teaches a flexible strategy for decoding multisyllabic words may be the foundation for increased reading abilities of middle school male and female students struggling with grade level text. To meet this need, the REWARDS reading program (Archer, Gleason, & Vachon, 2000) was used with struggling 6th grade readers with learning disabilities (LD). The quasi-experimental research design used in this study is non-randomized control group (n = 20), pretest posttest design. The Basic Reading Inventory along with DIBELS measure of reading fluency were the instruments used to calculate findings. In a five week period, students' decoding levels increased by 1.72 grade levels, instructional reading levels increased by 1.45 grade levels, while the reading fluency rates were increased by 28% at instructional reading levels and 17% at grade level. Decoding ability was highly correlated to reading comprehension with the relationship of .88.

Globalization and trade among developed and developing countries has increased the need of risk communication at the workplace. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in risk communication and perception in various countries. It looked at hazard perception associated with colors and safety words among Indian industry workers. Fifty workers participated in the study focused on hazard rating of 9 safety words and 7 colors. In one part of the study the participants were asked to associate colors with safety words through recalling them from their long-term memory; in another they were asked to associate safety words with given colors. The results showed that certain words and colors implied different hazard rating at the workplace. The rank ordering of safety words and colors varied significantly in different countries. Hence population factors should be taken into consideration when designing standards for hazard communication.

We present a finite-state technology (FST) based system capable of performing metrical scansion of verse written in English. Scansion is the traditional task of analyzing the lines of a poem, marking the stressed and non-stressed elements and dividing the line into metrical feet. The system’s workflow is composed of several subtasks designer around finite-state machines that analyze verse by performing tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, stress placement, and stress-pattern prediction for unknown words. The scanner also classifies poems according to the predominant type of metrical foot found. We present a brief evaluation of the system using a gold standard corpus of humanscanned verse, on which a per-syllable accuracy of 86.78% is achieved. The program uses open-source components and is released under the GNU GPL license.

The subject of considerations are organizational determinants the effectiveness of the development projects. Special attention is paid to increasing activeness of members of the organization, whose informal knowledge on causes of problems may supplement the information processed in the development project. The objective is to identify factors dependent on organization, which influence the effectiveness of project initiated in the event of a development gap. Methodology: System analysis is used to a set of alternative patterns of arrangement of selected aspects of the project. Examined is functional compatibility of patterns with the basic patterns of response to real or potential problems: prevention, correction and/or containment of the impact of the problem. In the analysis is used a general model "MSISI" development project and a model of problems cleaner. Findings: A system of basic factors is distinguished, which determine the terms of cooperation with the project team. It is shown that the choice of a strategy for development based on prevention or correction predetermines the choice of patterns of arranging cooperation of people with the project team, if the project is to be effective. Originality/value: The text enhances the understanding of the conditions that are shaping the readiness of people to cooperate actively in the implementation of development projects and creating an environment supportive for improvement.

Applying the generalised extension principle within the area of Computing with Words typically leads to complex maximisation problems. If distributed quantities--such as, e.g., size distributions within human populations--are considered, density functions representing these distributions become involved. Very often the optimising density functions do not resemble those found in nature; for instance, an optimising density function could consist of two single Dirac pulses positioned near the opposite bounds of the interval limiting the possible values of the quantity considered. Therefore, in this article, density functions with certain shapes which enable us to overcome this lack of resemblance are considered. Furthermore, some considerations on solving the resulting maximisation problems are reported.

Contrary to a previous etymology of his, the author’s present opinion is that cassasso derives from the Ottoman-Turkish hasas, a spoken variant of the literary Arabism ‘ases ‘a guard, night-watchman, policeman’. As to pettomagi/pettomanzi, it is possibly a Turkish adaptation of Greek words.

The paper approaches an important issue of the phonological similarity of words, relevant for current research in phonotactics, word recognition, production and acquisition, by analyzing the data collected in an experiment in which 30 native speakers of Polish were asked to provide phonologically similar words to 80 nonwords. The study demonstrates that the uncovered patterns of phonological similarity (segment substitutions, deletions and additions, the use of bigrams, trigrams and quadrigrams, noncontiguous sounds and segment metathesis) go beyond the commonly employed concept of neighbourhood density and point to the need to revise the current approaches to phonological similarity of words. It is argued that the experimental results can be attributed to the considerably more complex phonotactic and morphological structure of Polish than English.
