Opis:
Oued Nfifikh is among the least studied Moroccan rivers. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to shed light on the quality of this undervalued stream. Its downstream part is affected by one of the most crucial environmental issues. It receives the discharges of wastewater evacuated precariously without prior treatment, which might lead to the degradation of the overall ecological status of this fluvial hydrosystem. This research work aimed to study the physicochemical water quality downstream the river Nfifikh through a monthly monitoring of the physicochemical parameters’ indicator of pollution, from August 2018 to July 2019. The results obtained show that the stream is exposed to high pollution which is mainly organic. Consequently, the wastewater represents a major cause of water quality degradation of this receiving environment: ecological and health impacts are therefore to be expected.

Opis:
Nigeria has abundant surface and ground water resources many of which are polluted and can be detrimental to human health when consumed. This study investigated the effects of effluents discharged by industries into streams on the health of people who depend on stream water for domestic purposes in the Onitsha urban area of eastern Nigeria. Water samples collected from eleven discharge locations underwent physico-chemical and microbiological analyses. Data on the effects of industrial effluents on health were obtained from records in the public hospitals located in Onitsha as well as through questionnaire surveys and field observations. The results of the analyses revealed that the effluents grossly degrade surface water bodies; several parameters (temperature, iron, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, lead, magnesium, total heterotrophic counts, total coliform group, pH) had values which were higher than the WHO (2011) safety limits for drinking water. The contamination of investigated streams by effluents had negative impact on the health of stream users. The discussion included health effects of polluted water and the prevalence of water borne or related diseases in the area. Implications of these findings were also discussed. Management measures capable of minimizing contamination of surface water in the study area were suggested.

Dynamic changes in stream water temperature are caused by thermal energy exchange at the interface between the water and the atmosphere, and between the water and the streambed. This heat flux is the result of physical processes which are stimulated by external drivers that control water temperature both in temporal and spatial scales. For streams, the most characteristic are diurnal fluctuations of temperature. For the purposes of this paper, electronic data loggers were used which allowed a presentation of the diurnal cycles of water temperature in a small lowland river. The measurements confirmed that meteorological conditions have a significant impact on the diurnal dynamics of stream temperature.

Comprehensive knowledge and modern technique make it possible to reach for different natural resources deposited in water or on oceans bottom or even in stratum below the bottom. World ocean takes over 71% of our globe and considering continuous shrinking of natural resources of raw materials and fuels it becomes nowadays the area of intensive geological exploration. Having in mind the fact that most of typical land resources of useful minerals will last at the very most 50÷200 years, adequate reserves laying down at the bottom of the world sea may give our civilization a chance for several thousand years' development, according to scientist calculations [14]. Taking above into consideration, all seas and oceans shelves were divided into plots and fields. Many shelves are explored nowadays concerning petroleum and natural gas and such output reaching the level of 20% of total production [5]. Basing on different research and exploration it was found that the bottom and under bottom resources of natural minerals are gigantic. Technological development as well as huge investments caused that this XXI century starts new beginning of oceans exploitation [15] and its conquest. Careful investigations especially of deep resources exploration still is future matter. However nowadays there are rich useful minerals areas deposited at the bottom in the form of poly-metallic concretions. These are o res in the form of nodules including metals e.g.: manganese, cobalt, copper, iron and nickel. Among six different areas rich in concretions, the most perspective one is Clarion-Clipperton where such minerals concentration exceeds 10 kg/m2 [9]. This area region is located at Pacific in equatorial zone including undersea bottom leap down at the level range of 4200 to 5200 m [12]. Since 1992 Poland as so called investing pioneer (representing international organization Interocenametal) has the right to explore plot in the range of mentioned Clarion-Clipperton region of area of 150.000 km2 [7]. This paper presents basis of unconventional technology of poly-metallic concretions output by application of high-pressure cavitation water jet [1] with addition of dry ice particles CO2 as a medium helpful for material loosening form the ground. Such ice particle resistance to hygroscopicity causes that it doesn't have tendencies for lumping and therefore it may keep predicted ability for sublimation. Adequate intensity of this phenomenon [3, 4] in conditions analogical to those existing down at the sea bottom proceeds in a long time [7]. Considering above the gas form of CO2 may cause proper draught of water flow in elastic transportation pipeline. In turn for vertical transport intensification there is need to use additional air injector.

The study analyses the transfer of F-, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+ from bulkprecipitation to throughfall, soil surface flow, vertical flow and intercover flow of water (gravity lysimeters at 20 cm soil depth) in spruce stands of different age classes (1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th), and the amount of these ions flowing out from the Potok Dupniański catchment in the Silesian Beskid Mts. The results cover the year 2000. The concentration and amount of SO4 2- in throughfall systematically increased and the pH value decreased with the age of the stands and with successive elements of the ecosystem. The NH4+ ion was probably absorbed in the canopy, which caused a washout of K+, Mn2+, F- and SO42- in the vegetation season in older stands. In the winter season, Fe2+, Mn2+, Na+ and K+ were washed out from the youngest stands (1st age class), whereas F-, NO3 -, SO42--, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+ and Fe2+ – from older canopies. Decomposition of the organic matter caused a rise in water acidity and an increase in the concentrations of all the analysed ions; their leaching, however, was low (under 1%). Water from intercover flow contributed to an increase in the amount of water and the concentration and amount of ions and to a further decrease in water reaction at a soil depth of 20 cm. All the anions and cations flowed away with water penetrating vertically and horizontally. Considerable amounts of ions, especially SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+, were carried beyond the reach of the main mass of the root system and then out of the catchment, which may adversely affect the development and health of spruce stands.

The impact and occurrence of human-induced pollution sources have been investigated in one of the few remaining urban streams located in Attica, Greece. Baseline information is provided on the presence and concentration of physicochemical parameters, nutrients, total coliforms, hydrocarbons and phenols in 12 key points along the Pikrodafni stream. The aim was to evaluate the relative importance of key water quality variables and their sources. Indicator substances (i.e. concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and total coliforms in certain stations indicating wastewater exposure; PAHs indicating petroleum sources) successfully related the water quality variables to pollution sources. Furthermore, a pollution pressure map has been developed with the activities identified from in-situ visits and Google Earth surveys, while the statistical analysis (CA and PCA) has contributed to the further exploration of the relative magnitude of pollution sources effects. Our results underline initially the importance of diffuse pollution management accompanied by the necessity for continuous environmental monitoring and the application of legal and environmental restoration actions if water quality is to be improved according to WFD 2000/60/EC.

Hydrochemical research conducted in the years 2007–2010 comprised monitoring of the Włosanka stream waters and leachate waters from the municipal landfill in Kulerzów in the Malopolskie province. 16 leachate samples were collected from the container taking into consideration the vertical stratification of the quality and samples of water from the Włosanka stream in measurement points situated before and after the landfill. Concentrations of metals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, manganese and heavy metals: chromium, zinc, copper, cadmium, nickel and lead were determined in the leachates and the stream water. Analysis of the studied metals in the leachates revealed that only potassium concentration exceeded the highest admissible value which is the condition of introducing sewage to water bodies or to soil. Water along the investigated reach of the Włosanka stream, both above and below the municipal landfill was of quality class 1. The landfill had no significant effect on the studied metal concentrations in the stream water – no statistically significant differences were registered between the concentrations of the studied metals (including heavy metals) either in the point above or below the landfill. However, statistical tests comparing values of metal concentrations in the landfill leachates with the stream water revealed that the concentrations of 7 out of 12 tested metals were significantly higher in the leachates. Therefore, the landfill site monitoring should be continued, leachate waters should be collected in the container and supplied to the sewage treatment plant to prevent any threat to human life and health, or to the environment.

The aim of the paper is to determine the geometric and hydraulic characteristics of natural torrent beds and to propose a regional hydraulic geometry equations of mountain watersheds for the High Tatras region. The research was conducted in 26 natural torrents and their watersheds on the reference sections and profiles under the sediment source zones. Two different regression equations to determine the relationships of hydraulic geometry (hitherto used without asymptote and newly proposed with asymptote) were compared. The analyses showed a strong correlation relationship between watershed area Aw (km2) and bankfull geometric characteristics of natural cross-sections: width of the bed inside the banks Bbf (m), mean depth of the bed Hbf (m), channel cross-section area Abf (m2) and hydraulic characteristic – bankfull discharge Qbf (m3.s-1). The results were tested by t-test and Shapiro-Wilk test. The determination coefficient (R2) for the relationships without asymptote ranged between R2 = 0.919 and R2 = 0.972; p – values from Shapiro – Wilk test ranged between p = 0.0359 and p = 0.8027. The determination coefficient (R2) for the relationships with asymptote ranged between R2 = 0.952 and R2 = 0.974; p – values from Shapiro – Wilk test ranged between p = 0.0221 and p = 0.8617. Based on the analysis we found that the new equation with the asymptote provides very good results.

The aim of the paper was the identification and assessment of the area of anthropogenic impacts on water quality in the catchment of the Korzkiewka stream flowing through the areas of the Malopolska region. Analyses of physicochemical indices revealed that waters along the whole length of the stream qualified for below good status due to the exceeded EC and nitrate nitrogen concentrations. It was found that among 21 analyzed physicochemical indices, statistically significant differences occurred for 5: total dissolved solids, SO42-., Mg2+, K+ and water pH. In the headwaters section values of four salinity indices were significantly higher in relation to the other part of the stream. Assessment of anthropogenic factors affecting the catchment water resources conducted on the basis of unitary and percent indices revealed that the dominant category shaping the physicochemical status of the Korzkiewka stream water is municipal economy. The intensity of the influence of the factors from this category was from medium to very high, while in case of sewage discharged through the sewage network, even to outlier intensity. Forestry and agriculture exerted medium pressure, whereas the factors from the industry category had hardly any influence on water in the stream.

Geographical words referring to water, such as river, stream sea or lake, have been used in language since the earliest. As water is considered essential for life in general, the names of water reservoirs and watercourses became popular and frequently used items in all languages. The present study is focused on the English names of natural water reservoirs (sea, lake) and watercourses (river, stream) and their regional spread in the 12th–15th centuries. The Old English names of watercourses and natural water reservoirs, sӕ, flod and ea, either survived in Middle English in a modified form or were (rarely) replaced by loanwords as the effect of the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century. The research is concentrated on texts selected from the Innsbruck Corpus of Middle English Prose (Marcus 2008), with some material coming from the OED and MED. The analysis will show the extent of the loss of the original Anglo-Saxon words or their spread, frequently with a modified meaning. The analysis will also include the statistics of the terms in question in prose texts representing the chief dialects of the period. As regards the method, the present author makes use of the traditional semantic theories (e.g. Lyons 1977) and the prototype theory (e.g. Geeraerts 1997).

Water erosion is a critical issue for Morocco, especially in its semi-arid regions, where climatic and edaphic conditions only allow erratic soil formation and vegetation growth. Therefore, water erosion endangers human activity both directly (loss of arable land, landslides, mudflows) and indirectly (siltation of dams, river pollution). This study is part of the Kingdom’s effort to assess the risk of water erosion in its territory. It is dedicated to the Bin El-Ouidane dam water catchment, one of the biggest water storage facilities in the country, located in the High Atlas Mountains. The poorly developed soils are very sensitive to erosion in this mountainous area that combines steep slopes and sparse vegetation cover. The calculation of soil losses is carried out with the RUSLE model and corrected by estimating areas of deposition based on the unit stream power theory. This method produces a mean erosion rate of around 6.3 t·ha-1·y-1, or an overall annual loss of 4.1 mln t, consistently with the siltation rate of the dam. Primary risk areas (erosion rates > 40 t·ha-1·y-1) account for 54% of the total losses, while they cover only 7% of the catchment. This distribution of the soil losses also shows that the erosion risk is mainly correlated to slope, directing the means of control toward mechanical interventions.

According to the Water Framework Directive 2000/60 EC, the river basin is the basic unit for integrated water management at the basin level. In this sense, the knowledge of the morphometric parameters of the river takes on special importance. Morphometric analysis helps in understanding the geo-hydrological characteristics of a river basin. Various authors point out that the morphometric analyses of a drainage watershed demonstrate the dynamic equilibrium that has been achieved due to the interaction between matter and energy. The analysis of morphometric parameters also facilitates and helps to understand the hydrological relations of the basin. This paper deals with the morphometric analysis of sub-basins in the Klina River basin which is located in the northeastern part of the Dukagjini depression. To determine the morphometric parameters in the Klina River basin, the digital relief model from the Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) platform with a resolution of 20 × 20 m and the ArcMap 10.5 software were used. The results reveal that the total number of streams is 753 of which 602 are 1st order streams, 119 - 2nd order, 23 - 3rd order, 6 - 4th order, 2 - 5th order, and 1 - 6th order streams. The mean bifurcation ratio is 3.81, drainage density is 1.52 km∙km-2. The data and information presented in this study will be helpful and interesting in the plan of the management of Klina River basin which covers an area of 477 km2 within which is estimated to live about 100,000 inhabitants.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to monitor and assess the surface water quality in the Lower Çoruh River Basin, northeast Turkey. Several key water-quality indicators were measured: total nitrogen, total phosphate phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and chlorophyll a (Chl a). In situ monitoring and the surface water sampling studies in the Çoruh River, the Murgul Stream, and the Borçka Dam Lake were conducted monthly during a period of one year. On an annual basis, the Çoruh River had a little bit higher total nitrogen concentration ranging from 0.335 mg/l to 1.300 mg/l, but a little bit lower chemical oxygen demand concentration varying between 2.66 mg/l and 9.12 mg/l, compared to Murgul Stream. Total phosphate phosphorus concentration was almost the same throughout the lower basin and was about 0.090 mg/l. Chl a concentration, which was 1.422 μg/l in Çoruh and 1.062 μg/l in Murgul, had shown an increasing trend and reached 3.193 μg/l in the Borçka Dam Lake. The measured results reveal that the Çoruh River and the Murgul Stream have high-quality water, considering total nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand, but slightly polluted water regarding total phosphate phosphorus, with reference to the Turkish Surface Water Quality Regulation. The Borçka Dam Lake was classified as oligotrophic in terms of Chl a, mesotrophic in terms of total nitrogen, and eutrophic in terms of total phosphate phosphorus. Considering the decrease in the annual average values of total nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand, it is concluded that the Borçka Dam Lake had a positive effect on the surface water quality in the Lower Çoruh River Basin.
