Opis:
This study was carried out to monitor the presence of organochlorine in drainage water in Kafr-El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt. Furthermore, to evaluate the efficiencies of different remediation techniques (advanced oxidation processes [AOPs] and bioremediation) for removing the most frequently detected compound (lindane) in drainage water. The results showed the presence of several organochlorine pesticides in all sampling sites. Lindane was detected with high frequency relative to other detected organochlorine in drainage water. Nano photo-Fenton like reagent was the most effective treatment for lindane removal in drainage water. Bioremediation of lindane by effective microorganisms (EMs) removed 100% of the lindane initial concentration. There is no remaining toxicity in lindane contaminated-water after remediation on treated rats relative to control with respect to histopathological changes in liver and kidney. Advanced oxidation processes especially with nanomaterials and bioremediation using effective microorganisms can be regarded as safe and effective remediation technologies of lindane in water.

Opis:
The availability of water in adequate sufficient quantity and quality is the most important factor in maintenance of life and human activity. Surface water as easily accessible resources per citizen in Poland should not be compared to other countries of the European Union. Podlasie is a lowland region, which is dominated by vast plains occasionally varied by low hills with gentle slopes. Natural lakes occurring sparsely are heavily overgrown or completely restated as a result of moor succession. The storage of natural hollows which store water resulted in the construction of artificial dam reservoirs, allocated primarily to water accumulation. Lowland development of small retention mainly consists of increasing the retention capacity and prevention of drought and floods, while maintaining and supporting the development of the natural landscape. This article presents the characteristics of selected major small water reservoirs in Podlasie. Characterized and evaluated the susceptibility of dam reservoirs degradation: Czapielówka, Korycin, Otapy-Kiersnówek, Repczyce, Zarzeczany. To evaluate the susceptibility of degradation there was applied Schindler factor, which is the ratio of the accumulated surface water reservoir and its catchment area to the volume of the reservoir. In addition, the influence of development of catchment management and the degree of degradation has been evaluated. Realising aware of the limitations of the size of the water resources is suggested to take appropriate action to alleviate the degradation of artificial reservoirs.

Opis:
In 1970-2010, during the period of spring circulation and summer stagnation, hydrochemical studies were conducted in Lake Ińsko (Western Pomeranian Lake Region, Poland) with determination of the lake susceptibility to degradation and trophic changes. Also, the effect of the catchment area on the water quality in this waterbody was assessed. The waters of the study lake were characterised by low static index, which is an additional indicator of low dynamics of water masses, and low susceptibility to degradation. In spite of this, significant changes in the lake quality and trophy were observed. The hydrochemical parameters defining water quality of the study lake continued to improve. In the 70’s, the water quality was at the border of class II and III, while in 2006 and 2010 it reached the level characteristic for class I waters. Moreover, in the 70’s and 80’s of the previous century, Lake Ińsko Duże was a mesotrophic lake. Then, an increase in the lake trophy was observed, resulting in signs of eutrophy. At the end of the 90’s and in the first decade of the 21st century, the study lake returned to the state of mesotrophy. No restoration works were undertaken in Lake Ińsko in the study period. The improvement in water quality, called oligotrophication, resulted most probably from the lake reaction to changes in the soil use in the catchment area, since fewer phosphorus and nitrogen compounds flow into the lake, and also from the regulation of the wastewater management in the town of Ińsko.

Opis:
The Zoloushka Cave, with passages >90 km long and a volume of ~0.65 million m3, is among the largest gypsum caves in the world. The cave was opened in the course of gypsum excavation in a quarry in the village of Criva (Moldova) located just near the border with Ukraine. During the quarry exploitation, with the accompanying pumping of water, the groundwater table was lowered to the bottom part of the gypsum layer. As a result of the pumping, the karst aquifer within the cave labyrinth was fragmented into separate underground reservoirs controlled by the morphology of the karst system and its content of clay deposits. Currently, there are several dozen lakes in the cave with a varied hydrodynamic regime (relict lakes, lakes with direct and indirect hydraulic connection with the aquifer). Research was carried out in February 2020 to determine the degree of, and reasons for, the hydrogeochemical diversity of 10 selected lakes of various hydrodynamic types present in the cave. The degree of variability of the hydrogeochemical parameters of these lakes was found to depend on a number of factors, mainly: the hydrodynamic type of the cave lake resulting from the degree of its hydraulic connection with the aquifer; the geochemical environment of the lake; and anthropogenic influence. The autonomizing role of these factors is the modification (within individual lakes) of the hydrogeochemical context of the transit waters flowing through the cave system to the quarry.

In the present paper, on the basis of altitude measurements, changes of topographic profiles of a chosen dried valley in Elizowkaon the arable land were presented. Intensity of water erosion was also studied on the unprotected loess terrain for 40 years. On the average, 22 cm of mud deposited on the tested section of the valley bottom (total area of 1.28 ha) along 500 m of the water race line, with the average width of 25.ʹ6 m. In consequence, the local erosion basis was raised and the average inclination decreased slightly. Physico-chemical properties did not significantly change within 40 years and these factors are typical of deluvial soils with unshaped profile. Their partial improvement points to reduction and stabilisation of erosion processes. That phenomenon is associated with slight thaw water run-off and the lack of larger storm precipitation.

Opis:
The subjects of this study were uncultivated mining waste heaps which are remnants of the territories abandoned after the exploration of iron ore. The aim of this analysis was the assessment of the influence of these objects on the soil located in the nearest surroundings, as well as estimation of the level of their degradation. It was ascertained that direct geomechanical degradation exists in the examined object, which is connected with soil profile destruction in consequence of transformation of hitherto existing geomorphological conditions, deformation of natural shape of territory, density of soil levels and deformation of the spatial layout. As a result of the examination, it was pointed out that chemical degradation as well as degradation of ecological structure occur on the analyzed territory. Progressing processes of water erosion on the side of waste heap are the consequence of improperly profiled, steep slopes causing the uncontrolled flow of rainwater, lack of flora and dense, micrograiny structure of soils which prevents the effective infiltration of water. Penetration of water into the ground causes the creation of channels which, in dry periods, can become additional pathways for the possible landslides.

Opis:
The article focuses on the problem of structure degradation and ecosystem functioning – the urgency that identifies the relevance of operations at a strategic level aimed at providing the integrated assessment of ecological stability of water. Determination of water quality indicators were divided into blocks according to the criteria of salt composition, according to chemical saprobological indicators and the content of specific substances of toxic and radiation action. According to the results of block analysis, the integrated ecological index of water quality was determined by the dependence of water quality on the indicators of ecological stabilization of the landscape and the structure of biotechnical elements. The article determines the relationships between worsening quality of surface waters and stabilization or destabilization of the landscape structure. The research was conducted on medium and large streamflows on the Right Bank of Polesie region of the Dnieper- River cascade within which the tracts of land were identified and the landscape ecological stability (CESL1) and landscape biotechnical elements coefficients (CESL2) were determined. The retrospective analysis was performed of the surface water features on the Right Bank of Polesie region of the Dnieper- River cascade and the main trends in salt block indicators, trophic and saprobiological block indicators, and in the content of toxic and radioactive substances at observation sites were estimated. Based on obtained data, the integrated assessment in trends of surface water quality on the Right Bank of Polesie region of the Dnieper- River cascade was made and the main parameters and scale of stabilization and destabilization of landscape impact on the water quality formation were defined.

Opis:
In the world, the water quality is undergoing deterioration due to urban and industrial wastes, and intensive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Unfortunately, as in most countries of the world, Algeria is experiencing a severe crisis of its environment apart from the problem of depletion of water resources. The plain west of Annaba is particularly subjected to a general industrial pollution. The pollution problem in this region has really started to become worrying not earlier than in 1980, when the economic crisis has led some industrial units to sacrifice the “Environment” criterion for the benefit of the production. We were particularly interested in this work in waters of the superficial aquifer and wadis like Boudjemaa, Bouhdid, Sidi Harb, and Forcha whose waters are most often used to irrigate the surrounding agricultural land. Comparison of analytical results from two periods – 2006–2016 for the: EC, pH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, NO2 and 2006–2010 for the: Fe, Cr, Cu2+, Pb+ show a degradation of water quality in this region, which represents a very vulnerable area with a risk to pollution of groundwater.

Environmental degradability of novel organic-inorganic cellulose acetate butyrate hybrids obtained via solgel process was investigated. The degradation of hybrids was studied under marine exposure conditions in the Baltic Sea for a period of 25 weeks. The influence of characteristic parameters of sea water on the degree of degradation monitored by changes of weight and optical microscopy was discussed. The degraded samples were also examined by FT-IR spectroscopy. It has been established that the CAB/silica hybrids are more susceptible to biodegradation in sea water environment than pure cellulose acetate butyrate.

WO3 modified TiO2 nanotube array (WO3/TNAs) photoelectrodes were fabricated via electrochemical deposition on TNAs/Ti photoelectrodes. The morphology and structure of WO3/TNAs photoelectrodes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The effects of deposition potential, deposition duration, NaWO4 concentration, and calcination temperature on the morphology and the photocatalytic activity were investigated. The results showed that suitable amounts of WO3 promoted the photocatalytic activity of TNAs photoelectrodes for the degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP). The optimal conditions for the fabrication of WO3/TNAs photoelectrodes were as follows: deposition voltage 3.0 V, 10 min deposition duration, 0.01 mol/dm3 Na2WO4 concentration, 1.5 cm electrode gap, and 550 °C annealing temperature. The degradation rate of DMP reached 77% after 60 min of illumination by WO3/TNAs photoelectrode. Additionally, WO3/TNA photoelectrodes possessed superb stability for maintaining a high DMP degradation efficiency at more than 75% after 10 times of successive use with 60 min irradiation for each cycle. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance by the efficient combination of WO3 with TNAs would provide a theoretical basis for the practical application of WO3/TNA photoelectrodes in water treatment.
