Opis:
This article aims at exploring and problematizing the role of visual designs, as applied in a selection of five popular recent college textbooks that introduce students to Cultural and Media Studies. It can be observed that academic textbooks are increasingly produced in alignment with the properties of contemporary visual culture. The article reviews some of these properties, focusing on the growing need for enhancing visual literacy. It presents the framework of multimodal analysis, as the textbook is co-constituted by verbal and visual modes, which are integrated through a common design. The analytic categories of multimodal analysis allow for a qualitative, yet systematic, examination of some compositional and semiotic resources that have been applied in textbooks. The analysis focuses on textbook typography, supra-textual organization, the number and choice of figures/tables/lists, the layout of pages, structure of chapter/section, and type and framing of visuals. This is followed by a function-oriented critical discussion of these stylistic properties and of the implications of certain compositional preferences for teaching/learning. The study identifies designs that result in diversifying and aestheticizing textbooks visually, as well as hierarchizing and objectivizing knowledge. While both advantages and disadvantages of currently popular designs can be found, attention is drawn to the fact that visually-enhanced designs might fail to engage students in critical reflection, simplify the issues, and divert attention from the merits of exposition/argument, particularly if students lack skills in visual literacy.

From icon to punk portrait: The iconicity of the ruler image in the context of the transformation of the idea of the Serbian stateThe article describes transformation in the iconographic forms of power representations in Serbian culture as determinants of the evolution of the idea of the State and Serbian political culture. In visual terms, the key stages of their development correspond to the genealogical dynastic image of the religious character (loza) in the middle ages, and the “disenchanted” historical and representative portrait of a ruler that was subordinated to the national idea on the threshold of modernity. These forms not only participate in the establishment of political leadership and the creation of the field of power, but they also stimulate their change. The author examines these issues from the perspective of visual studies, which problematize the phenomenon of the performativity of the image. A particular variation of the performativity of the image is iconicity, understood as drafting and making present reality using esthetic and visual values. The aim of the analysis is to show how the local, namely Serbian, pattern of culture of power models the universal mechanisms of forming and legitimizing the authority of the State. Od ikony do punk portretu. Ikoniczność wizerunku władcy w kontekście przemian idei państwa serbskiegoArtykuł dotyczy przeobrażeń ikonograficznych form reprezentacji władzy w kulturze serbskiej jako wyznaczników ewolucji idei państwa oraz kultury politycznej Serbów. W wymiarze wizualnym kluczowym etapom ich rozwoju odpowiadają: w średniowieczu genealogiczny wizerunek dynastyczny o charakterze religijnym (loza), a u progu nowożytności „odczarowany” portret historyczny i reprezentacyjny władcy, podporządkowany idei narodowej. Celem analizy jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób lokalny, tj. serbski wzór kultury władzy modeluje uniwersalne mechanizmy formowania i legitymizacji autorytetu państwa.

The paper concerns the condition of selected aspects of American mythology in contemporary (from the 1960s till today) art and visual culture. Using specific examples and referring to theorists of American culture such as Sacvan Bercovitch, I argue that, despite varied strategies of appropriation and deconstructive critique of American ideals of freedom, equality and the country’s special role in the world, epitomized in the notion of American exceptionalism, the basic structure of the myth, due to its inextricable connection with American history, still persists as an important platform of action and a frame of reference. I analyze a selection of works referring to the Stars and Stripes, the Western film genre as well as the architecture of the post-9/11 World Trade Center, which both reveal the underlying structure of the myth, denaturalizing it, and a strong, continued attachment to it in the 20th and 21st century United States.

Should any museum or scientific library consider itself as an information technology laboratory? This article explores the lives of several pioneering museum and library projects focused on digital image retrieval techniques (CBIR). The research aims to contribute critical evaluation of museum and information technology domain relations in the field. The outcomes may be applied in the planning of future co-operative endeavours. The analysis begins with a discussion of projects in which a museum or library played the role of data pro- vider for image analysis development and testing (i.e. SWIC, Collage, SHREW systems). This is followed by a study of schemes focused on technology and implementing a standard image search methodology used for access to museum collections (i.e. QBIC, Artiste). The final part of the paper deals with the projects animated by museums or libraries themselves (BSB, Oxford Ballads Online, PrintArt) and the example of a consort that focuses on the specific type of visual resources (the Bernstein project).

This article provides preliminary insight into the creation of colonial visual culture. Using visual examples, the author shows how the encounter between European and Amerindian was, at first, apparently deprived of moral judgement, later being increasingly signified through moral and physical monstrosity, especially the female body, which served as an apparatus to assure colonial dominion. Looking mostly at the works of Liègeois artist Theodor de Bry, the author shows how increasing female protagonism may have helped to coin a proper visual culture that mirrored the development of productive force in early capitalism. Assuming that the European colonizer in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was still highly informed by Medieval culture, the author quickly retraces how the New World was imagined through cartography, following to the first depictions of the Amerindian and, finally, focusing on de Bry’s work and an argument on capitalism and how visual culture may help us understand its process.

Opis:
The article attempts to present the identity of the judge through the metaphor of the role as an interactive ritual. The framework of this ritual can be described by means of both intersubjective factors (e.g. legal rules) and individual factors (the subjectivity of the role performer). I apply this conception to the iconic symbol of justice in public space, which is usually associated with the figure of a woman whose eyes are covered with a blindfold, holding the scales of justice in one hand and a sword in the other. It is a visual symbol of the judge; one that is comprehensible to both lawyers and the public. In carrying out this task, I refer to sociological and anthropological research in the field of visual culture. This perspective determines not only the subject matter covered by the theses formulated in the article but also the research method. It is assumed that visual representation constitutes a communication channel that has a great impact on individual and social memory. For this reason, the presentation of the role of the image and the methods of its interpretation is important for the debate about the role of the judge and the image of the judge in public space. This approach to the subject, which consists in shifting the emphasis from text to image, also rehabilitates the significance of visual representation in jurisprudence, a field traditionally dominated by the view that law is a linguistic phenomenon.

In a society which is increasingly visual, and the teaching of history and critical thinking so important in an age of post-truth and fake news, the words of the Swedish poet, Linn Hansén, seem particularly apt: what is history, is what is illustrated. The images found in history coursebooks help learners to imagine the past, providing a visual aid to support learning, but they can also be used to foster critical thinking by treating the images as historical sources in themselves. This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted on the functions of images contained in Polish and British history coursebooks using a proprietary paradigm developed on the basis of existing scholarship in English Language Teaching. It shows that the pedagogical functions of images in history coursebooks vary greatly between the two educational contexts. In Britain, images are typically treated as historical sources in themselves, whilst in Poland they typically perform more of a decorative function. The paper closes with a number of recommendations for further research and publishers of history coursebooks.

The subject of the research presented in the article, related to visual literacy, is to determine the scope and quality of the phenomenon of communication in the area of symbolic communication. Individual dispositions of information users were taken into account, creating a set of behaviors and reactions, views and concepts, personal beliefs and inclinations that determine the way of life and thinking – the so-called Habitus by Pierre Bourdieu. The aim was to create the characteristics of the examined representatives of the young generation and to determine their predispositions to symbolize (search for references). The research was carried out on two comparative groups of research participants from Poland and Italy in order to examine the quality of contemporary visual communication and the predisposition of information users to visualization, and their adaptation to the visual form of expression. The research meets the educational demand for a modern form of education, taking into account the modern informational live environment and media immersion in the visual reality of the participants of the education process.
Przedmiotem badań przedstawionych w artykule, związanych z visual literacy, jest określenie zakresu i jakości zjawiska porozumiewania się w obszarze komunikacji symbolicznej. Uwzględniono indywidualne dyspozycje użytkowników informacji, tworząc zbiór zachowań i reakcji, poglądów i koncepcji, osobistych przekonań i skłonności, które determinują sposób życia i myślenia – tzw. Habitus wg Pierre’a Bourdieu. Badania wychodzą naprzeciw zapotrzebowaniu edukacyjnemu na nowoczesną formę edukacji, uwzględniającą współczesne informacyjne środowisko życia i medialne zanurzenie w wizualnej rzeczywistości uczestników procesu edukacji.

Aim. The purpose of the study is to analyse the structural aspects of expansion, which find expression in cultural metaphors and philosophical concepts, the transformation of the content of which is evidence of the emergence of new aesthetic practices. Methods. The research methodology involves the use of a systemic approach and such methods as analytical, comparative, axiological, and hermeneutic to understand the patterns of formation of paradigms of visual culture and contexts of expansion in postmodern culture. Results. The metaphor of glass during the 20th century loses its meaning as a source of the effects of refraction of reality in perception, the excessive complexity of which forms a tendency for simplifying and zeroing. The expansion becomes an important principle of cultural dynamics, extends to space and time, communication and identity in the world of the rapid circulation of information and its instant obsolescence. The patterns of expansion are observed in the processes of aestheticisation and aesthetic experience as the breaking out of form, perspective, perception and inclusion of the Self in the profound contexts of collective practices. Conclusions. Through mastering new sensual modalities in the photo, film reality, and the latest Internet technologies, there is an expansion of perception as an expansion of media. Therefore, at the level of identity the practices of focus, concentration, and slow contemplation gain importance. In the cultural aspect, the expansion enables a return to tradition in a new capacity.
