Opis:
Based on a 3-year field study, the effect of mineral nitrogen fertilization on the yield, selected tuber quality characteristics and fertilization efficiency indicators for early potato varieties grown in the integrated production system were determined. The quality of tubers was assessed according to the percentage share of tuber size and their external defects in the yield structure, starch content, dry matter, nitrates (V), protein and total nitrogen in tubers. The efficiency of fertilization with mineral nitrogen was expressed by the agronomic efficiency (AE), physiological efficiency (PE) and fertilizer recovery efficiency (FRE) by tubers. Two experimental factors were considered: nitrogen dose (0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha-1) and varieties (Bohun, Lady Rosetta, Lawenda, Madeleine, Magnolia). The increase in the dose of mineral nitrogen contributed to a significant increase in the yield structure of tubers with a diameter above 60 mm, the content of nitrates (V), protein, total nitrogen, the uptake of nitrogen and a decrease in nitrogen fertilization efficiency indicators. It was shown that the Lady Rosetta and Lawenda varieties were characterized by higher requirements concerning the optimal nitrogen dose than the other varieties. Nitrogen fertilization efficiency, the content of nitrates (V) and tuber greening were determined mainly by the weather conditions, while the yield, nitrogen content and uptake by tubers were determined by the fertilizing factor, and the remaining tuber quality features were shaped to the greatest extent by the genotype. In a wet year, a significantly higher tuber yield, more large tubers in the structure and higher nitrogen fertilization efficiency were obtained. In years with rainfall deficit, a higher content of total nitrogen, protein, nitrates (V) in tubers and higher nitrogen uptake were found than in a wet year.

Abstract Combining ability of 27 potato parents was evaluated in three factorial cross experiments (North Carolina II design) at Młochów Research Center of Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR). The pool of tested forms comprised 18 cultivars and 9 parental lines. Depending on the experiment 60 or 90 unselected individuals per each family were evaluated. Completely randomised block design was applied for the purposes of each experiment. Progenies were evaluated for 7 traits. Important from the point of view of processing quality traits: fry colour, percentage of defect-free chips, tuber shape and the incidence of secondary growth seem to be determined by both additive and non-additive action of genes. However, in the case of fry colour the proportion of general combining ability were considerably higher than that for specific combining ability. There were identified five valuable parents for breeding of cultivars suitable for chip processing (Atlantic, Brodick, Panda, Signal, M-62633), and two parents (Agria, Shepody) for breeding of cultivars for French fries processing.

Opis:
In the research carried out in the years 1999-2001 the following characteristics of three edible potato cultivars were determined: tuber yield, starch content, dry matter content, vitamin C content and starch yield. Genotype-environment interaction for the above characteristics was evaluated on the basis of main effects (genotypes and years) and interaction effects by means of the variance analysis for repeated experiments and according to the linear model for the design which confounds the type 33 interaction. Moreover, there were calculated the variance of genotype stability describing the environmental variation of the genotypes, and the ecovalence coefficient which describes the genotype x environment interaction. All the analysed characteristics were influenced by the cultivars (genotypes) and the environment. The genotype-environment interaction reflecting different response of the cultivars to changeable environmental conditions proved to be significant for all the examined characteristics. The analysis of results does not allow to unambiguously indicate the stabile genotype because the Muza cultivar was most stable for vitamin C and dry matter contents, and starch yield whereas Aster and Ania proved to be most stable as far as tuber yield and starch content, respectively, were concerned...

Opis:
This paper presents the comparison of the quality of new potatoes imported from the Mediterranean area during the winter-spring period. The study material included the new potatoes imported from Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Spain and Morocco, purchased in Poland, from the beginning of February to the end of May. The laboratory analyses were performed on a total of 162 potato samples. The dry matter content in the new potatoes imported from Spain and Morocco was higher than in the potatoes originating from Cyprus, Egypt or Israel. The dry matter content in the new potatoes imported from Cyprus, Egypt, and in the majority of new potatoes imported from Israel did not differ significantly. PCA showed that the potatoes which had more dry matter contained more L ascorbic acid but less total sugars. The least L-ascorbic acid content and the lowest protein content were determined in the ‘Nicola’ potatoes imported from Israel and 'Excellency' tubers imported from Spain. The amounts of L-ascorbic acid and protein in the remaining potato samples tested were at a similar level. The potatoes of the same variety imported from different countries did not differ in terms of L-ascorbic acid content. The 'Maris Peer' tubers imported from Spain had more protein than those originating from Israel. The starch contents in new potatoes imported from Israel and Cyprus were lower compared with the tubers from Egypt, Spain and Morocco. The potatoes which had more starch had higher dry matter contents and more monosaccharides. The highest starch content was determined in the ‘Excellency’ potatoes, which represent the floury cooking type, imported from Spain or Morocco. The 'Excellency' tubers imported from Morocco had more total sugars and monosaccharides than the potatoes imported from Spain. All of the tested potato varieties had a very low susceptibility to the aftercooking darkening.

Opis:
The effect of nitrogen fertilisation and microbial preparations on the content of dry matter, starch, total protein and nitrates (V), raw potato tuber flesh tendency to darkening and the size of edible potato tuber storage losses was assessed in field experiments. The experimental factors were nitrogen fertilisation levels: 0, 60, 120 and 180 kg N ha–1 and preparations: BactoFil B 10, Effective Microorganisms EM and UGmax soil fertiliser. The level of nitrogen fertilisation and application of microbial preparations had a significant effect on shaping the chemical composition and storage durability of potato tubers, however no influence of these factors was noted for the intensity of raw tuber flesh darkening. Increase in nitrogen fertilisation level was accompanied by a decrease in the content of dry matter and starch, whereas total protein and nitrate contents were increasing. Moreover, nitrogen fertilisation caused a significant increase in natural depletion in tubers during a 6-month storage period. The influence of microbial preparations on the tuber chemical composition was different than nitrogen fertilisation effect. Application of BactoFil B 10 preparation favoured accumulation of dry matter and starch in tubers, application of Effective Microorganisms EM preparation contributed to an increase in starch and nitrate content, whereas after using UGmax soil fertiliser a significantly lower total protein content was registered than in the case of the control.

In three-year field trials the effect of row covering with early potatoes on selected factors of tuber quality was evaluated. Experiments were conducted the Přerov on Labem locality in the Czech Republic with Adora and Impala potato cultivars. On the basis of statistical analysis of the results it is evident that row covering with the fleece 60 days after planting positively influenced dry matter content in tubers, but did not affect the content of polyphenols, nitrate and ascorbic acid.
W trzyletnich badaniach polowych obserwowano wpływ stosowania osłon z agrowłókniny w uprawie ziemniaków wczesnych na wybrane parametry jakościowe bulw. Badania odmian ziemniaków Adora i Impala zrealizowano w okolicy Přerov nad Łabą (typowo wczesno ziemniaczany region w Czeskiej Republice).

Opis:
Potato is an important nutrient source in human nutrition. Potato tuber quality is affected by a cultivar, environmental conditions and agricultural practices. The study examined the effect of dose (0.2 dm3 ha–1 and 0.4 dm3 ha–1) and date of Tytanit® application (a single foliar application at the leaf development stage – BBCH 14–16 or at the tuber formation stage – BBCH 41–43, and a double foliar application at the BBCH 14–16 and BBCH 41–43 stages) on the tuber quality of very early potato cultivars (‘Lord’ and ‘Miłek’). Potatoes were harvested 75 days after planting (the end of June). Tytanit® (8.5 g Ti in 1 dm3) did not affect the content of dry matter, starch, monosaccharides, protein, L-ascorbic acid or nitrates in potato tubers. The very early potato cultivars responded differently to the Tytanit® applied. This growth stimulant caused an increase in total sugars content in the tubers of ‘Miłek’ and had a greater effect on the discoloration of tuber flesh after cooking of this cultivar. The contents of dry matter, starch, total sugars and protein in ‘Miłek’ tubers were higher than in ‘Lord’ tubers, while the content of monosaccharides, L-ascorbic acid and nitrates in tubers of both cultivars did not differ significantly.

Trace elements contents analyses were made in tuber samples collected from the field experiment in 1996-1998 in Experimental Station, Parczew, on weak loamy sand soil. The following experimental factors were taken into account: their cultivation technologies; two potato varieties (Aster and Drop). The lead content in very early potato tubers appeared to be higher than the permissible one in all study years. The highest lead content was found in young tubers harvested on 60th day after setting. Along with the delay of harvest, the lead level tended to be lower. Tubers harvested on the 75th day after setting accumulated the most strontium, those physiologically matured had the lowest level of this element. All types of coverage applied in the study contributed to the increase of lead content in tubers of very early potato varieties as compared to traditional cultivation. Neither cultivation technologies nor variety features modified the strontium accumulation in tubers.

Opis:
The paper presents the variability analysis of some quantitative characteristics, that is of tuber yield, starch content and yield, dry matter content and yield and vitamin C content in selected edible potato varieties. Reciprocal relations of variance components calculated and their percentage share in the total variability were a measure of variability evaluation for the characteristics examined. Moreover, the variability of the characteristics was characterised by means of the classical variability coefficient. It has been found that tuber yield and vitamin C content variability was determined mainly by the interaction effects of years and the factors examined, as well as the experimental error. The respective values were as follows: 44.3% and 34.7% for tuber yield, and 42.2% and 46.2% for vitamin C. The starch content was in 47.5% modified by the effects of the main factors (including 35.0% for years) and the error effect (39.0%). A similar interaction was observed in the case of dry matter content variability, but the error was 52.4%. Starch and dry matter yields were determined mainly by interaction effects of the years and the examined factors (40.7% and 39.9%, respectively) as well as the experimental error (32.2% of the total variability for both traits). The highest changes expressed as the values of the coefficient of variation were found for tuber yield, dry matter yield and starch yield.
W pracy przedstawiono analizę zmienności niektórych cech ilościowych, tj. plonu bulw, zawartości i plonu skrobi, zawartości i plonu suchej masy oraz zawartości witaminy C u wybranych odmian ziemniaka jadalnego. Największym zmianom, wyrażonym w postaci współczynnika zmienności, podlegał plon bulw, suchej masy i skrobi.
