Opis:
Purpose: Many policies aimed at developing sustainable transport are based on a (partial) exclusion of car drivers and on a decrease in rivalry between different transport users. In this context, the primary purpose of this study is to assess the impact of changes in levels of rivalry and excludability resulting from infrastructural changes in the transport system providing enhanced sustainable transport choices. Methodology/approach: Rivalry and excludability determine patterns of consumption and are the basis of many aspects of sustainable transport policies. Therefore, the key issue for policy making is to determine the extent to which changes in these features support sustainable transport choices. To attempt to understand these features, preliminary survey research was conducted among users of the Wrocław (Poland) transport system to investigate; (i) which changes in the transport system are the most important for respondents, (ii) how these changes influence the intensity of rivalry and excludability, and (iii) whether these changes lead to a shift in transport mode choice. Findings: Changes in the transport system led to decreased or unchanged intensity of rivalry. There were few examples of exclusion, which affected primarily car users. Modifications in the levels of the two analysed features were not accompanied by a permanent shift towards more sustainable transport choices. Originality/value: While many studies investigate changes in transport behaviour resulting from particular solutions that promote sustainable transport, this study focuses on how transport users react when faced with many different changes in the transport system. The novelty of this approach sheds light on transport choices resulting from changes in rivalry and excludability and the results obtained may assist evidence-based policy recommendations.

Opis:
The determinants of mode choice of interregional transport of fish, which is highly perishable, vastly differ from that of other commodities. These determinants are to be identified to improve transport efficiency. A questionnaire survey of shippers is used to collect the data. Highly correlated observed variables are combined to form four latent factors by factor analysis to reduce the errors in modelling. Logical relations among the component variables of latent factors are perceived, and mathematical formulations are used to estimate new variables. It is found that transportation costs and shipment weight contributes to factor 1, while distance contributes to factor 2. However, transportation costs are associated with distance and shipment weight. Thus, the variable, transportation cost per q-km, is estimated. Survey respondents' attitudes are also incorporated into modelling by including qualitative factors obtained by the factor analysis of shippers' preference ratings. A latent class analysis confirmed the existence of heterogeneity among shippers. Misrepresentations of effects occur in modelling if the heterogeneity in the data is not considered. No studies have found the best combination of observed variables, latent factors, estimated variables, and qualitative factors, considering shippers' heterogeneity in freight mode choice. Hence, this study is done to find the optimum modelling strategy. Modelling revealed that models built with estimated variables outperformed those built with latent factors. Including qualitative factors along with observed variables and estimated variables showed further improvement. However, the model that includes observed variables, estimated variables, and qualitative factors considering shippers' heterogeneity is the best. It was found that the mode selection behaviour of different latent classes of shippers is distinct. A mode shift from road to rail could be achieved by lowering transportation costs and increasing speed, reliability, and safety for fish transport. Expanding roll on-roll off facilities, dedicated freight corridors, parcel trains, refrigerated containers, and piecemeal service by rail promote a mode shift from road to rail and reduce energy usage.

Opis:
In recent years, the transport mode choice of students of higher educational institutions has become a subject of increasing interest. Investigating the modal choice of students, who form a considerable section of the population, is crucial for sustainable urban transport planning and understanding the quality of life of students. Reviews of previous studies have indicated that hilly cities in less developed countries are neglected in transportation studies. The present paper investigates the travel behaviour of non-local, off-campus college students in Aizawl – a fast-growing hilly city in northeast India. The study found that transport mode choices are influenced by interrelated factors, including socio-economic background, demographic, availability of transport mode and location of housing. It was also found that walking and public buses are the most preferred modes of commuting among the studied college students. Female students who rent houses near their colleges are more likely to walk than their male counterparts. On the other hand, male students belonging to high-income families tended to travel by private vehicles from their residences, which are located relatively far away from colleges. The study argues for the enhancement of the intake capacity of residential hostels inside the campus to improve the growing transport problem of off-campus students in the city.

Opis:
This paper models a proposed system that has the potential to transport baggage. It makes use of a modal choice model to examine how effective the system would be if implemented. The introduction of a baggage collection system would increase the number of passengers using public transport which would be good for the environment. The specific location of the study was Tyne and Wear and a journey from North Shields to Newcastle International Airport was chosen for the analysis. With the introduction of a new utility equation that could analyse mixed-mode travel, a baggage collection hub based in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre offered a significant number of users provided that the cost of the system was either covered in the travel ticket or provided by the airport or airline free of charge. This dedicated baggage collection system would be very expensive to introduce due to the massive amounts of work that would be required to set up the system, however, its ridership would be large therefore it could potentially recoup the development costs.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to discuss the replication of passenger congestion (overcrowding) effects on output path choices in public transport assignment models. Based on a comprehensive literature review, the impact of passenger overcrowding effects was summarised in 3 main categories: the inclusion of physical capacity constraints (limits); the feedback effect between transport demand and supply performance; and the feedback effect on travel cost (discomfort penalty). Further on, sample case studies are presented, which prove that the inclusion of capacity constraints might significantly influence the assignment output and overall results in public transport projects’ assessment – yet most state-of-the-practice assignment models would either miss or neglect these overcrowding-induced phenomena. In a classical 4-step demand model, their impact on passengers’ travelling strategies is often limited to path (route) choice stage, while in reality they also have far-reaching implications for modal choices, temporal choices and long-term demand adaptation processes. This notion has been investigated in numerous research works, leading to different assignment approaches to account for impact of public transport capacity constraints – a simplified, implicit approach (implemented in macroscopic-based models, e.g. PTV VISUM), and a more complex, explicit approach (incorporated in mesoscopic-based models, e.g. BusMezzo). In the simulation part of this paper, sample tests performed on a small-scale network aim to provide a general comparison between these two approaches and arising differences in the assignment output. The implicit approach reveals some differences in assignment output once network capacity constraints are accounted for – though in a simplified manner, and producing somewhat ambiguous output (e.g. in higher congestion scenarios). The explicit approach provides a more accurate representation of overcrowding-induced phenomena - especially the evolving demand-supply interactions in the event of arising congestion in the public transport network. Further studies should involve tests on a city-scale, multimodal transport model, as well as empirical model validation, in order to fully assess the effectiveness of these distinct assignment approaches.

Opis:
From ancient to modern times, in the historical process of urban development, urban transportation has been developing along with the development of the city's political, economic and cultural industries, and the relationship between each other has always been a topic constantly discussed by planning scholars. The development of urban transportation promotes the urban population gathering and industrial development, and promotes the development of urban geographical space. At the same time, it also brings endless convenience to urban residents, so that they can complete the displacement from the beginning to the destination with relatively low cost. However, with the rapid development of urban scale and the rapid growth of urban population, the problems of traffic congestion and land resource shortage in big cities of China seriously restrict the improvement of the quality of life of residents and the further development of the city. In this context, compact city is the inevitable choice for future urban development, while the transportation system supporting compact city form can only be public transportation. As a high-volume, efficient and rapid public transport mode, rail transit can not only solve the traffic congestion problem in high-density areas of cities, but also optimize the development and utilization of urban land and adjust the urban spatial layout, which is of great significance for the sustainable development of cities. The network of rail transit in Beijing becomes the backbone of public passenger transport system, and play an irreplaceable role in guiding the urban space layout adjustment, population migration and the transformation of traffic structure. The study of travel characteristics of the residents who live along the rail transit, in-depth analysis the relationship of the rail transit, the population migration and commuter travel, it is of great significance providing decision support for urban planning. Based on binary choice model, establishing the residents' travel choice model, rail transit impact model of different crowds. Study the relationship between rail transit and residents' travel characteristics, predict the rail transit to guide the trend of population migration.

Opis:
This paper explores the new research challenges for forecasting urban goods demand by rail. In fact, the growing interest to find urban logistics solutions for improving city sustainability and liveability, mainly due to the reduction of urban road accessibility and environmental constraints, has pushed to explore solutions alternative to the road. Multimodal urban logistics, based on the use of railway, seem an interesting alternative solution, but it remained mainly at conceptual level. Few studies have explored the factors, that push actors to find competitive such a system with respect to the road, and modelling framework for forecasting the relative demand. Therefore, paper reviews the current literature, investigates the factors involved in choosing such a mode, and finally, recalls a recent modelling framework and hence proposes some advancements that allow to point out the rail transport alternative.

Opis:
The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected the economic and social spheres of all countries. Restrictions introduced to reduce the risk of transmission have changed the structure of population movements. The impact of these restrictions on the characteristics of intercity travel is still an understudied problem. Based on the analysis of statistical data and the results of questionnaires, the article assesses the impact of pandemic restrictions on population mobility in the Western region of Ukraine and changes in the distribution of passenger flows between different modes (bus, rail, private transport, joint travel). In 2020, the volume of passenger traffic in the region decreased by an average of half compared to the previous year. The decline is sharper for rail passenger transport compared to the bus transport. For more developed railway networks, the impact of the pandemic on passenger traffic is more pronounced. Quarantine restrictions have also increased the share of own car travel. According to research, the distribution of intercity trips between modes is influenced by the age and sex of the traveler. During the pandemic, users of transport services who travel with children under the age of 14 choose private transport to travel more often than those who travel alone. The degree of influence of the above factors on the distribution of modes depends on the length of the trip. The application part of the work presents the results of modeling passenger flows of the studied region in the software environment PTV Visum. It was found that at the beginning of the quarantine restrictions the number of intercity trips decreases sharply. As the duration of restrictions increases, the rate of decline in mobility decreases. These data can be further taken into account when planning the work of transport enter-prises and meeting the population`s demand for travel. The practical application of the study results is that the identification of trends in the mobility of residents of the studying region depending on the impact of pandemic restrictions allows you to predict the mode and type of vehicles used. Based on these data, you can determine marketing strategies for the development of certain modes and directions of transportation.
