The Bond between Language and Culture in the Light of Lexicography. The Role of the Stronger Bond with Culture in Bilingual Dictionaries for Translators. Bilingual dictionaries are used for various reasons. One of the reasons is to find out what the particular word means using its equivalent in the target language. What is of great importance here, is that sometimes the meaning itself – expressed lexicographically – provides not enough information that is necessary to fully understand the particular word. Although it appears that the isolated meaning of the word is clear and understandable, its constitutional and contextual meaning in specific linguistic environment becomes unclear, confusing or misunderstood. This can be observed especially when the word and its meaning are unique and characteristic for the particular culture. This article focuses on the use of the language which is specific for the given cultural group. The phenomena of both the bond existing between culture and language as well as the use of the language within the culture are expounded upon and explored on the example of the words welcome and goodnight. The article investigates whether and to what extend bilingual dictionaries include in their microstructure the information concerning the cultural aspects of the use of the linguistic entity. The short characteristic of bilingual dictionaries and the assessment of the culture-specific phenomena serve as the theoretical background for the subject under investigation.

This paper examines the link between the notion of ‘cultural translation,’ initially introduced by Homi Bhabha in The Location of Culture (1994), and autobiographical writing by a translingual writer: Edward Said’s memoir, Out of Place (1999). As an ArabAmerican intellectual, Said culminates his writing career with a memoir, in which he represents the educational years of his life. Said shows through the narrative that the interplay between Arabic and English language and cultures strongly infl uenced the formation of his identity. Thus, this paper explores reading his memoir as an attempt at ‘cultural translation’ according to which diff erence is not necessarily trapped in binary oppositions of self/other; East/West; home/foreign land – to name only a few. Difference in this context rather opens a possibility for more fluid boundaries allowing for negotiation and change.

Biographical approaches are increasingly being used with people who speak and write a range of languages. Even when an account is originally spoken, the final version usually ends up written in the language used by the majority of the population. Researchers have shown that adopting a language that is not the one an account was given in may change how someone is perceived. Yet little has been written by sociologists using biographical approaches about the implications of moving accounts across languages. Researchers within translation and interpretation studies are increasingly tackling issues of representation across languages and developing concepts that can usefully be applied in biographical research. They question the assumption that accounts can be unproblematically transferred across languages and argue for strategies and concepts that “foreignise” texts and challenge the baseline of the target, usually for these writers, English language. However, these concepts bring issues of their own. In this article I examine these developments and give an example from my own cross language research that show that these concepts can begin to open up debates about meaning and representation.

In accordance with statutory law, since 2004 sworn translators have been considered a profession commanding public trust. Among the many professional duties associated with sworn translators' performance, the regulations emphasize the duty to translate both spoken discourse and written texts with precision and faithfulness, and make sworn translators liable to disciplinary sanctions for poor quality work. The principles and rules for practicing the profession of sworn translator are enumerated in the Professional Sworn Translator’s Code of 2018.

Opis:
This paper explores the concept of legal translation as a Third Space through the lens of the ‘multilingual’ Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ). In many ways legal translation at that Court fits readily with the characterisation of translation as a Third Space. Due to complex internal production processes the ECJ produces texts which are undoubtedly hybrid in nature, and which exhibit distinctive features on a lexical and textual level marking them out as a product of cross-fertilisation of influences from source and target languages and legal cultures. Even the teleological approach taken towards legal reasoning at the ECJ occupies a space outside the strict confines of the texts involved. Both the processes and the product of the ECJ’s language system appear to bear all the hallmarks of translation as a Third Space. However, translation at the ECJ also challenges the concept of a Third Space. The prevailing definitions of translation as a Third Space fail to effectively conceptualise additional nuances of the specific nature of drafting and the complex nature of translation at the ECJ. This paper uses original empirical data to demonstrate that translation at the ECJ places constraints on the undefined, vague and fluid nature of the Third Space, warping the forces at work within that space. In this regard, rather than an amorphous space, the Third Space is better thought of as a determinate area which is delimited by elements of translation process which constrain it. This adapted framing of the Third Space can consequently be used to better understand and illustrate the dynamics at play in other areas of legal translation where the current concept of the Third Space is equally inadequate for encompassing the specific nature of translation practices which impact on that space-in-between.

Opis:
Clarification is one of the textual phenomena enumerated by Antoine Berman as deforming tendencies in translation. It is best observable when the target text turns what was ambiguous in the original into more specific. This need to clarify the original often stems from systemic differences between languages. However, on numerous occasions the movement from the original ‘indefinite’ into the definite in the translation results from a subjective decision taken by the translator, who in fact has proper linguistic means at his disposal to retain the original level of indeterminacy. In the case of a literary work such a tendency may influence all its levels, especially the interpretative possibilities, as seen in two Polish translations of E.A. Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, by Bolesław Leśmian and Stanisław Wyrzykowski. By discussing descriptions of the fictional space and the references to the Usher siblings, this article indicates to what extent clarifying lexical choices impact on the atmosphere of the work, consistency of the fictional world, suspense and the stance of the narrator.

Opis:
English translation of Norwid’s early poem Italiam! Italiam! is analysed by means of katena method and Prof. Puzynina’s assumptions. The trochaic structure of the original poem and its polysemantic meaning impede the proper selection of translation strategy. The carefully copied metrical form of the text does not exert the same effect in the target language as in the source one. The results of the analysis show that Laskowski’s translation also diverges from Norwid’s lyric in all other aspects that create the poem’s identity. Its English version is a more cheerful, less profound and one-sided copy of the original.

This paper discusses the characteristics of prosecutor’s language that would appear in the prosecution witness’s answers during direct examination. I performed a linguistic comparison of the language that is used in a witness’s answers against that of five relevant documents, which include a prosecutor’s opening statement, a prosecutor’s final statement, 11 samples of suspect’s statements from the handbook for investigating officers and one from witness’s personal letters. I would like to argue that as the witness’s answer had the features of a prosecutor’s language as well as written language, the prosecutor’s ten meetings with the witness immediately before the trial may have possibly influenced not only the witness’s language but also the content of the testimony itself. The analysis of this paper is based upon my expert witness opinion that was submitted to the Tokyo High Court and Japanese Supreme Court for the case in question.

Aim of the article is to provide critical examination of manipulation process as multidimensional phenomenon related to imagination, representation, translation and interpreting of original texts in light of assurance of informational safety that is our research object. Our research corresponds to theory and practice of translation, psychology, comparative religious studies, international relations, public diplomacy and national security. Methods. Research methodology is based on critical analysis of manipulations with texts; the methods have been borrowed from works of Gilbert Durand (1999), Michel Maffesoli (1996) and James Frazer (2012) on social anthropology. Results. Practical value of obtained results consists in proposed algorithm for critical analysis of translated or interpreted texts that allows to evaluate their quality according to context, meaning and semiotics of the source texts. The notion of empire as an archetype that was implemented into contemporary international relations is also revised and extended. That can help in analysis and prevention of different forms and means of outside and inside tactics of deviant influence on societies and to illuminate threats for cultural identity and spiritual diversity of the global community. Conclusions. Phenomenon of marginalization of cultural and spiritual identity (sacral sphere) under the influence of globalization by the means of soft power pressure can be evaluated today as the unspoken impact of influence agents implemented into new societal institutes in the form of alien cultural imperatives that are enforced to different communities as common for all agendas in the frameworks of postmodern stream.

Opis:
The research of Mariana Lanovyk deals with the Literary Criticism problems of translation. In the situation when the plurality of approaches in the Contemporary Literary Criticism can be overwhelming Ukrainian scholars have to work on the adaptation of foreign paradigms in the Ukrainian Criticism space to create solid foundation for the future studies in the fields of the Comparative Literature and Literary Theory. This research is the first attempt in Ukraine to present the integral outlook upon the problems of Literary Translation from the perspectives of the concepts and ideas of different Literary Paradigms of the 19-20th centuries beginning with the Romanticism epoch. Romanticism was chosen as the starting point because in the aesthetic concept of Romanticism there new theoretical approach to the problems of literary translation in the author – language – epoch – nation contexts was outworked. Philosophic, artistic and literary concepts of that time were developed in all modern literary paradigms. The first chapter of the book deals with the psychological and cultural approaches to the problems of the Literary Translation. The author gives short outlook of the genesis of new theoretical background in the aesthetic concept of Romanticism as the source of contemporary theories of translation and the continuation of the ideas in psycholinguistic studies of the Western Europe and in Ukraine, especially in the Potebnja’s literary criticism works. The main attention is concerned on the problem of correlation between thinking process and language, thought and image. The influence of the ideas of 19th century upon the psychoanalysis and their transformation in this paradigm is considered. The author studies the phenomena of consciousness, self consciousness and sub consciousness in the process of reading, understanding and translation as well as the peculiarities of different gender reading, interpretation and translation different elements of the writing works. The differences of literature translation in the realms of biological, linguistic, psychoanalytic and cultural paradigms are considered. The author examines the role of individual and national, historical, cultural memory in literary texts and the possible ways of their transfer. Contemporary approach to the national problem in translation studies development is connected with the key points of national images in literature texts. This idea is rooted in the spectrum of the East-West background as well as national values in the literature systems. The outlook of the multiculturalism and intercultural communication in literature is offered through the review of the artistic nature of the mythological thinking. The wide spectrum of different points of view upon the problem (E.Cassirer, K.G.Jung, E.Noimann, N.Frye) is given. The second chapter of the research deals with the translation criticism ideas in the light of the main concepts of formalism and structuralism. The possible ways of translation analysis as the dissolving problems of form transformation and constructing the literary text by means of the foreign language in foreign literature system are suggested. The concepts of R.Jakobson, J.Tynianov, J.Mukarzevsky, especially the concepts of hierarchy and dominants in literary work, inner structuring and organization of the meaning, functioning of text and its components as the whole are outlined. As the foundation of the research logic of the semiotic analyses was chosen Lotman’s dynamic model of semiotic system, that was proved with adjoining studies of the foreign scholars such as K.Levi-Strauss, J.Mukharzovsky, J.Derrida. Among the narratological questions of fiction translation are discussed such questions as voice authority and correlation of the voices in translated texts; the possibilities of study of different narrative instances of interpreter. In the third chapter the problems of the text reading, realization, interpretation are discussed. The main paradigms involved here are hermeneutics, phenomenology, receptive aesthetics, intuitivism and other irrational approaches to the text interpretation (such as game theory, metaphorology, imagology, relativism theory, discourse analyses). Among the problems of translation from the point of view of hermeneutic approach the main attention is concerned upon the stages of reception, understanding and interpretation as well as the different horizons of reading. The phenomenon of movement of horizons and connected difficulties of fusions of horizons in acts of reception, interpretation and translation are analyzed. The author tries to answer the questions about different points of view and the problem of partial reception and reproducibility; as well as the question of subjectivity in the process of translation. She gives the consideration of the ideas of Ukrainian (A.Potebnja, O.Biletsky) and foreign (F.D.Shleiermaher, V.Dilthey, M.Husserl, H.-G.Gadamer) scholars and examines the possible ways of their application to the translation studies. The thoughts of the phenomenology paradigm are based upon the ideas of E.Husserl, R.Ingarden, P.Ricouer. The main attention is drawn to the spectrum of potential of possible readings and translations of every text from the different time and space perspectives such as different epochs, individual and national experience; historical, cultural and artistic systems. In this way phenomenology of translation reveals new ideas about the text existence and its possible measures. They are connected with the problems of modeling and reflection of the world as the specific author’s vision. New tendencies of resolving of subjectivity of literary texts interpretation coursed with the post structuralism and deconstructivism tendencies are outlined in the key of the hermeneutic concept where the author’s position is dominant in the process of translation. Modern realization of the author’s perspective concept in the works of E.D.Hirsh, J.P.Sartre, U.Eco, N.Frye and others opens rational approach to the problem of resolving of ‘conflict of interpretations’ not only in the dimension of interpretative schemes of literary studies but in the system of translation studies too. On the basis of Relativism theory foundation the author tries to find both the way of synchronizing coordinate systems of original texts and its interpretations and the possible way of synchronizing the systems of interpretative paradigms in contemporary literary studies. In the conclusion the author underlines that shifts of the literary theories paradigms of the 19-20th centuries course the shifts in translation studies thinking; and together they create the common space of semiotic sphere of translation and interpretation. The question of the main importance is to consider the differences of methods of the paradigms as well as their mutual relation, influence and interaction.

The book written by Mar′âna Lanovik in Ukrainian language entitled The Relativity Theory of Literary Translation. Projections of Literary Criticism [Teorìâ vìdnosnostì hudožn′ogo perekladu. Lìteratoroznavčì proekcìї] is certainly worthy of the reader’s attention. The author (a woman), a Ukrainian professor of literature from the University in Ternople, has prepared an extensive monographic study of the problems from the field of translatology. Prof. Lanovik, who in her research deals with Russian and Ukrainian literature, theory of literature, comparative studies and theory of literary translation, has analyzed the issues referred to in the title of her book in a very thorough and profound manner. The book consists of an introduction, three main chapters, divided into sections and subsections, and conclusions followed by a long bibliographical list of primary and secondary literature. The author discusses three fundamental issues: 1) a psychological and cultural approach to literary translation, 2) a formal and structural approach to literary translation, and 3) translation and the problems of understanding the literary work. In my opinion, the book should be translated into English.
