To derive a more effective educational method, racial differences among Chinese students in learning Korean culture was invesigated using a survey method. The Han and Joseon racial groups in China were examined. Before the survey, the Han race students (Chinese students except Joseon race students, in this case) preferred a language and culture teaching method (LCTM), whereas the Joseon race students favored an audiovisual teaching method (AVTM). However, after experiencing four different teaching methods – comparative-cultural teaching method (CCTM), AVTM, LCTM, and rote memorization teaching method—for two weeks, the Han race students preferred the AVTM more, whereas the Joseon race students preferred the CCTM. Thus, students from the same country require different education methods.

This study explores the most preferred and effective teaching methods for Korean language and culture for university students. Statistical analysis of awareness of the Korean language, history, and culture was conducted. It tested differences in students’ knowledge about Korea dependently on a teaching method and sociodemographic variables. The study investigated is there a dependency between favourite teaching methods of K-culture and analogical methods using K-pop, K-drama, and K-food. The main research tool was the survey conducted among 70 students studying Korean language and culture at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The study’s statistical analyses employed the IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 package, used for analysing basic descriptive statistics, r Pearson and rho Spearman correlation analyses, and t Student test for independent variables. The analysis proves that the students do not differ in terms of knowledge about Korea in relation to a preferred and effective teaching method.

This paper is about the process of learning/teaching philosophy in a class of deaf stu-dents. It starts with a presentation of Portuguese Sign Language that, as with other sign lan-guages, is recognized as a language on equal terms with vocal languages. However, in spite of the recognition of that identity, sign languages have specifi city related to the quadrimodal way of their production, and iconicity is an exclusive quality. Next, it will be argued that according to linguistic relativism - even in its weak version - language is a mould of thought. The idea of Philosophy is then discussed as an area of knowledge in which the author and the language of its production are always present. Finally, it is argued that learning/teaching Philosophy in Sign Language in a class of deaf students is linked to deaf culture and it is not merely a way of overcoming diffi culties with the spoken language

The paper discusses various culture-connected forms of context that can be inferred from a text in the moment it is being dealt with. While presenting mutual counter-dependencies of language and culture the paper offers an analysis of culture-bound aspects of context as they are found to have been functioning from the point of view of one’s text comprehension. This is where the cognitive theory of language as offered by Ronald Langacker [2003] is briefly discussed and mutual forms of correspondence between the text-existing language and the context which comes out as a symbolic unit to be recognized as the cognitive basis of the (con)text-connected reality for the readers are analyzed. Finally, the paper discusses the forms of influence of various culture-connected issues of reasoning upon the linguistic forms of cognitive illustration of the approach towards the description of local environment as they are generally observed in different forms of L2 communication.

Affectivity is an important dimension in humans’ social and individual lives. It is either a stimulating or hindering aspect of language learning. This article aims to draw attention to material culture as a powerful, but mostly neglected source of data on the use and acquisition of languages, and demonstrates the close and intricate links between affectivity and material culture. It is hoped that revealing these interrelationships will assist in understanding and managing language diversity. It will allow practitioners and teachers to carry out social and private encounters, events and language teaching with more care, understanding and expertise. Researchers will be encouraged to join the investigation of yet one more important facet of multilingualism – material culture.

Opis:
This article aims to show the possibility of an academic approach to teaching the Catholic religion at school to the liturgical rites of the Catholic Church from a cultural perspective. Liturgical rites consist of numerous signs and symbols that refer to the human dimension, which seeks what is beautiful, true, and good. At all levels, one of the main objectives of Italian and European schools is to teach, educate, and raise responsible and upright citizens. Therefore, while contributing to the general formation of the human being at school, the teaching of Catholic religion also draws students closer, in cultural terms, to the great code, i.e., the liturgy of the Catholic Church. It is certainly a form of public and social communication. It is education in action. In this sense, for example, it could be a considerable and systematic cultural opportunity for Ukrainian students residing in Poland, a chance to learn the symbolic language of the Catholic liturgy in the perspective of reaching human maturity without fear of proselytism from the Catholic Church. This article in no way intends to diminish the intrinsic value of the liturgy in the life of the Church, understood as a celebration, proclamation, commemoration, promise, and moral call whose purpose is to transform or transfigure the person so that he/she is oriented toward the highest good, i.e., God, and able to live a life of mutual love

In a society which is increasingly visual, and the teaching of history and critical thinking so important in an age of post-truth and fake news, the words of the Swedish poet, Linn Hansén, seem particularly apt: what is history, is what is illustrated. The images found in history coursebooks help learners to imagine the past, providing a visual aid to support learning, but they can also be used to foster critical thinking by treating the images as historical sources in themselves. This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted on the functions of images contained in Polish and British history coursebooks using a proprietary paradigm developed on the basis of existing scholarship in English Language Teaching. It shows that the pedagogical functions of images in history coursebooks vary greatly between the two educational contexts. In Britain, images are typically treated as historical sources in themselves, whilst in Poland they typically perform more of a decorative function. The paper closes with a number of recommendations for further research and publishers of history coursebooks.

From a diversity perspective, all students should receive an education that continuously affirms human diversity – one that embraces the history and culture of all racial groups and that teaches people of colour to take change of their own destinies. With regard to teaching, a diversity perspective assumes that teachers will hold high expectations for all students and that they will challenge these students who are trapped in the cycle of poverty and despair to rise above it. Individual teachers in individual classrooms play an important role in providing equity of opportunity to learn and in ameliorating racism, but more comprehensive conceptions of diversity education capture the school’s crucial role as well. This article wants to address diversity in the classroom and how racial and cultural diversity is valued and what can be done to improve it.

In this article I present the potential of media sport texts in terms of their utilisation in Polish as a foreign language classes. I discuss various definitions of text to indicate that it can constitute not only a linguistic concept but can also carry a communal element, a state of one’s spirit if you will. Next, I indicate the role of media texts in foreign language teaching. Further, I discuss the role of culture, popular culture in particular, in foreign language teaching. I also reference studies which have indicated the differences in how the same media genres are constructed in various linguistic contexts. My original proposal applies to sport texts, be they broadcast on the radio, television, or the internet. I indicate their potential in foreign language teaching and specific areas in which they may be applied. I conclude by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of utilising sport-themed media texts in Polish as a foreign language classes.

The paper demonstrates selected communicative phenomena characteristic of the Polish high school classroom, i.e. classroom communicative inertia and students’ communicative snippiness, which are assumed to originate, inter alia, from the popularity of Internet social networks, the language of which has been partly shaped by such globalising tendencies as the rise of the dominant position of the English language and Anglo-Saxon culture. The remedy for the aforementioned negative aspects of classroom communication may be sought among the premises underlying the concept of the transcommunicator. It is assumed that the above theory should be applied to English language teaching and learning in Poland.

This article discusses the modes of defining cultural content in teaching Polish as a foreign language. It proposes strategies for introducing cultural knowledge and knowledge about culture in the practice of teaching Polish as a non-native language. It seems appropriate to offer a division into: The cultural semantics of lexemes, set phrases and expressions; The culture (meaning the correct use) of expression and the linguistic norm; and Culture content and areas conveyed to foreigners through the language they are learning. This discussion fits the debate regarding the language which we teach to foreigners. In it, researchers have offered examples of semantic distortions (mostly shifts), and the dangers of private or rather extra-curricular linguistic contact with a language’s native users. It also carries reflections on linguistic regionalisation and its presence in the practice of teaching Polish as a non-native language.
