Opis:
Support frameworks of transport vehicles operate under varying terrain conditions under the influence of extreme climate and corrosive environments. When transporting cargo, dust is deposited on the surface of metal structures. The combination of dust and moisture creates an aggressive environment resulting in intense corrosion damage. The damage is caused by the defects of corrosion pitting, which occur on the surface and transform into corrosion cracks. Based on energy approaches, with the application of well-known results for the mathematical description of electrochemical reactions and the principles of fragile fracture mechanics, an analytical model of durability is proposed for the first time. The model determines the residual life of maximum loaded elements of undercarriages with surface cracks under the action of dynamic loads and corrosive environments. For this case, a set of mathematical relations in the form of a non-linear differential equation was developed, as well as the initial and final conditions for determining the life of vehicles’ structural elements with corrosive surface cracks. The analytical model implementation is proven by solving the problem of determining the residual life of a vehicle’s element, i.e., a steel plate, weakened by a semi-elliptical surface crack, which is under the action of dynamic loads in a 3% sodium chloride solution. The insignificant increase in the crack’s initial size is proven to greatly reduce the period of its subcritical growth. The developed model was applied to define the residual life of thin-walled elements of structures with surface cracks.

Enteroviruses are small RNA(+) viruses that encode one open reading frame flanked by two extensive noncoding regions carrying structural RNA regulatory elements that control replication and translation processes. For a long time the central, coding region was thought to remain single-stranded and its only function was supposed to be as the template for polyprotein synthesis. It turned out, however, that the protein coding region also encodes important RNA structures crucial for the viral life cycle and virus persistence in the host cells. This review considers the RNA structures in enteroviral genomes identified and characterized to date.

Opis:
The primarily goal of this study is to reveal a scaled soil-structure interaction model for small capacity shaking table testing instead of the full-scale field experiments. The prototype of soil-structure interaction system with frame-type building, resting on a sandy soil with shear wave velocity of 536 m/s and unit weight of 12.9 kN/m³ has been selected. For experimental investigations, the realistic site and building structures are scaled with a geometric scaling factor of 1:45. The test model, consisting of six-story steel frame-type building, natural soil and laminar soil container, is designed and constructed to realistically simulate the seismic soil-structure interaction effects of building structures in shaking table tests. In order to verify the geometric scaling factor, the dynamic properties of the fixed-base system for both prototype and scaled model are determined by using finite element analysis. Furthermore, the dynamic parameters for scaled model of a single layer soil, restricted with base-rock, have been compared numerically with the proposed laminar soil container, to provide a good agreement.

Opis:
In the article, a new way for obtaining a set of geometrical parameters of granular porous beds is presented, if the data on the locations and sizes of all particles is available. The input data were prepared with the use of Discrete Element Method. The other way for acquiring the input data may be the application of Computed Tomography (CT) and Image Analysis (IA) techniques. All geometrical parameters are calculated with the use of own numerical code called PathFinder (freely available in the Internet together with its source code). In addition to description of the method of calculations, two examples of its use are presented. One simulation was performed in PFC3D code, and the other in YADE software. The aim of the article was to show clearly that a porosity is not sufficient to describe the spatial structure of a porous body. In both presented examples, the porosity value is almost the same, but other parameters, e.g. tortuosity, are different. The motivation to write the PathFinder code were significant problems with obtaining geometrical parameters needed in investigations related to granular porous media. The issues described in the article are a part of an overall research methodology relating to the linking the micro- and macro-scale investigations of granular porous beds. The areas of applications of this methodology are not discussed in the article.

Opis:
In this paper the problem of interaction between a coherent floating ice cover and a rigid engineering structure is considered. It is assumed that the ice cover, of horizontal dimensions considerably larger than the dimensions of the structure, is driven by wind and water current drag forces. During the interaction process of a quasi-static character, ice is assumed to behave as a creeping material, with a rheology described by the viscous fluid flow law. The ice cover is treated as a plate which sustains both bending due to the vertical reaction of the underlying water and the action of horizontal forces, which gives rise to the development of creep buckles in the plate and subsequently leads to the flexural failure of ice. An approximate solution to the problem is constructed by employing the finite element method. The results of numerical simulations illustrate the magnitudes of the forces exerted on the structure and their dependence on the wind direction and the structure geometry. In addition, the ice plate deflection in the vicinity of the structure is illustrated, and the values of the critical time at which the plate starts to fail by creep buckling are determined to show their dependence on the ice thickness, temperature, and type.

Opis:
Due to their excellent performance, composite materials are increasingly used in the marine field. It is of great importance to study the low-velocity impact performance of composite laminates to ensure the operational safety of composite ship structures. Herein, low-velocity drop-weight impact tests were carried out on 12 types of GRP laminates with different layup forms. The impact-induced mechanical response characteristics of the GRP laminates were obtained. Based on the damage model and stiffness degradation criterion of the composite laminates, a low-velocity impact simulation model was proposed by writing a VUMAT subroutine and using the 3D Hashin failure criterion and the cohesive zone model. The fibre failure, matrix failure and interlaminar failure of the composite structures could be determined by this model. The predicted mechanical behaviours of the composite laminates with different layup forms were verified through comparisons with the impact test results, which revealed that the simulation model can well characterise the low-velocity impact process of the composite laminates. According to the damage morphologies of the impact and back sides, the influence of the different layup forms on the low-velocity impact damage of the GRP laminates was summarised. The layup form had great effects on the damage of the composite laminates. Especially, the outer 2‒3 layers play a major role in the damage of the impact and the back side. For the same impact energy, the damage areas are larger for the back side than for the impact side, and there is a corresponding layup form to minimise the damage area. Through analyses of the time response relationships of impact force, impactor displacement, rebound velocity and absorbed energy, a better layup form of GRP laminates was obtained. Among the 12 plates, the maximum impact force, absorbed energy and damage area of the plate P4 are the smallest, and it has better impact resistance than the others, and can be more in line with the requirements of composite ships. It is beneficial to study the low-velocity impact performance of composite ship structures.

Opis:
On the battlefield, modern vehicles perform a variety of roles. Transportation is one of the most fundamental. Operating in different terrains, including urban areas, means exposing the crew to different hazards. To increase crew protection, passive and active protection systems are used. On the other hand, in addition to protection, support of the infantry in offensive operations is an equally important activity. The most common solution for medium wheeled vehicles is a manned turret. The weapon is a 30 mm cannon. Nowadays, there is a trend towards installing systems that allow such weapons to be operated remotely. This minimises the exposure of highly trained personnel. This paper presents the results of a numerical study of the dynamic loads on the roof-plate structure of a wheeled armoured personnel carrier resulting from the firing of the vehicle's main armament. It includes the values of the strains and stresses in the upper plate structure and the forces transmitted by the brackets connecting the roof plate to the bottom plate, and an assessment of the risk of using such a system on the safety of the vehicle structure and its crew.

The use of wood materials as a characteristic of Malay architecture is related to local socio-cultural and environmental factors. The wood type used in traditional Malay structures has endured for hundreds of years, but in a state of decreased strength due to its being continuously exposed to biotic and abiotic harm factors. Documentation of the physical elements and identification of the current condition of the Kadariah Palace could preserve the value of the heritage building for future generations. The data was collected by field observation to be interpreted by applying a qualitative descriptive approach. The construction of the Kadariah Palace with structural, non-structural, and decorative ornaments is indicated by the physical elements of its appearance. The belian wood was used as a building material, which impacted the deterioration of the exteriors by biological and non-biological damage factors. The biological damage factor is caused by white rot, while non-biological damage factors are caused by weather, thermal, and mechanical factors.

A FEM-BEM coupling approach is used for acoustic fluid-structure interaction analysis. The FEM is used to model the structure and the BEM is used to model the exterior acoustic domain. The aim of this work is to improve the computational efficiency and accuracy of the conventional FEM-BEM coupling approach. The fast multipole method (FMM) is applied to accelerating the matrix-vector products in BEM. The Burton-Miller formulation is used to overcome the fictitious eigen-frequency problem when using a single Helmholtz boundary integral equation for exterior acoustic problems. The continuous higher order boundary elements and discontinuous higher order boundary elements for 2D problem are developed in this work to achieve higher accuracy in the coupling analysis. The performance for coupled element types is compared via a simple example with analytical solution, and the optimal element type is obtained. Numerical examples are presented to show the relative errors of different coupled element types.

Opis:
Today, interconnected open-cell porous structures made of titanium and its alloys are replacing the prevalent solid metals used in bone substitute implants. The advent of additive manufacturing techniques has enabled manufacturing of open-cell structures with arbitrary micro-structural geometry. In this paper, rhombic dodecahedron structures manufactured using SLM technique and tested by Amin Yavari et al. (2014) are investigated numerically using ANSYS and LS-DYNA finite element codes for the modeling of the elastic and postyielding behavior of the lattice structure, respectively. Implementing a micro-mechanical approach to the numerical modeling of the yielding behavior of open-cell porous materials is the main contribution of this work. One of the advantages of micro-mechanical modeling of an open-cell structure is that, in contrast to the macro-mechanical finite element modeling, it is not necessary to obtain several material constants for different foam material models through heavy experimental tests. The results of the study showed that considering the irregularity in defining the cross-sections of the struts decreases both the yielding stress and densification strain of the numerical structure to the values obtained from the experimental tests. Moreover, the stress-strain curve of the irregular structure was much smoother in two points of yielding and densification, which is also observable in experimental plots. Considering the irregularity in the structure also decreased the elastic modulus of the lattice structure by about 20-30%. The post-densification modulus was more influenced by irregularity as it was decreased by more than 50%. In summary, it was demonstrated that using beam elements with variable cross-sections for constructing open-cell biomaterials could result in numerical results sufficiently close to the experimental data.
