The properties of mineral matter occurs in coal in the form of inorganic compounds leads to slagging and fouling process on boiler heating surfaces, burners and ash hopper. The deposition of ash cause many undesirable phenomena such as heat transfer deterioration, damage to internal parts of the boiler as a result of detachment of large agglomerates and finally, costly shutdowns of the boiler. Standardized method of risk assessment of agglomerates formation and sintered fly ash is determined by four melting temperatures of ash. This measurement is based on visual appraisal of ash sample deformation which is subjective and strongly depends on the experience of the person conducting the test. Especially is hard predict the first two temperatures: deformation and sintering. An article has to present three non-standardized methods for determining the sintering temperature by using physical parameters: pressure drop and minimum force of probe destruction. This type of measurement allows a quantitative way to obtain reliable and meaningful result. The experiment showed that the results of non-standard methods deviate from those set using the Leitz method. This allows to conclude that sintering processes occur at much lower temperatures and changing the shape of the initial (test method Leitz) is not the first symptom of demonstrating the melting of the ash.

Coal combustion ash-slag mixtures have been deposited in landfills in Poland for decades. At the same time, there is a shortfall in the amount of available materials related to the construction and modernisation of transportation infrastructure. Thus, a typical landfill of a power station was chosen and the aim of the study was to assess the suitability of an ash-slag landfill mixture for construction engineering purposes. The following physicochemical analyses were conducted: pH, specific electrical conductivity and determination of the leachability of basic (Ca, Na, K and Mg) and trace elements (Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn and Cu). The content of selected basic and trace elements were determined in the eluates by FAAS and standard methods were applied for geotechnical analyses. The most likely conditions were assumed to the model. The mixture will not jeopardize surface water quality in terms of the concentrations of basic, hazardous or priority elements. The content of these elements also does not exceed permissible concentrations for groundwater. The conductance and pH of the eluates are in compliance with current laws. The solid mixture has favourable geotechnical parameters which are significantly dependent on moisture content. The slope stability calculations for embankments created from the mixture at optimum moisture content and high compaction (Is ≥ 0.95) indicate that they will be stable even in the case of high gradients (1:1.5). The slopes will be unstable in conditions of submersion, which should not occur if we assume the embankment will be used for passive flood protection

As a result of the research, the level of the destructive load was identified, and the construction failure process was reconstructed. The practical effect of the work was the conclusion on the reinforcement of the structure. The calculations were made using the finite element method in the LS Dyna calculation program.

Sandstone is one of the most popular building materials since the earliest times. It has various textures and colours as well as good technical parameters. Sandstones, having such wide applications, are subjected to various external factors during the period of use. So, it is of utmost importance to have a good knowledge of their strength parameters. We employed a numerical method called Discrete Element Method to examine in a non-invasive manner the mechanical strength of industrial sandstones, that are commonly used as broken stones in road construction, cladding material, paving stones, pavement tiles and so on. Various mechanical external factors were considered, such as breaking, compressional and abrasion forces or impact by external objects and vibrations. Fragmentation of the considered sandstones under compressional regime was a source of knowledge about energy storage inside the material and energy release, as well as appearance of fractures inside the matter and final sandstone fragmentation into crumbs.

This paper describes a numerical analysis of adhesively bonded hot dip zinc coated sheet and titanium sheet and its comparison with the results of experimental tests. The study aims at presenting a comparative analysis of numerical calculation results with the results of strength test of the joints in question. Numerical simulations are an invaluable extension of experimental tests and, moreover, prove particularly useful at joint designing and analysis stages. The calculations were conducted with ABAQUS Standard software and allowed for the destructive force value obtained in experimental tests. Strength tests were conducted on single-lap adhesive joints for given structural materials; the samples were shear-loaded. The comparison of the results of experimental tests and numerical analysis led us to observe certain inconsistencies in the destructive force values, consequently providing information on the accuracy of a numerical model when compared with the actual model. Geometric model of the analysed single-lap adhesive joint, numerical model of the analysed single-lap adhesive joint, adhesive layer failure criterion description, visualisation of the analysed single-lap joint failure process, visualisation of adhesive joint failure stages of adhesive layer are presented.

This article presents selected criteria for the quality assessment of single-lap adhesive joints formed on 0.66±0.04 thick hot dip zinc coated sheets with the hot dip zinc coating thickness equal to 18 μm. Three types of epoxy adhesives and three variants of the mass of adhesives were tested (1 g, 2 g and 3 g). The work intended to assess the capacity of the visual method with regard to evaluating joint quality, allowing for the presence and the size of spew fillet, joint dimensions and the effect of spew fillet on adhesive joint strength. The strength of analysed adhesive joints was determined in destructive tests.

The article presents the results of research concerning the effect of anthracite dust with 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% content in composites with a polypropylene matrix on selected properties. Hardness was examined with the Shore’s D method; stiffness, tensile strength as well as (MFR) Melt Flow Rate and (MVR) Melt Volume Rate of the investigated material were evaluated; wettability of the obtained material was also determined. Surface and volume resistivity were also investigated; the thermal properties of the filler were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that the investigated polypropylene composites filled with anthracite dust are hydrophobic materials and the composite hardness and stiffness are growing along with the volumetric increase of anthracite. It was noted that anthracite reinforces the material to a limited extent.

This article covers the use of analytical technique of solutions for flexural and longitudinal fluctuations of the bearing framework of a railcar body frame in the form of an elastic core of variable section with a variable weight, flexural and longitudinal rigidity. The calculation is performed for the modernization of the body frame of emergency and repair rail service car, taking into account the variability of section, mass, longitudinal and bending stiffness along the length to prolong the service life of their useful operation. Problems of increasing the reliability and strength of the frames, load-bearing body structure and components for rail vehicles during their design, operation and modernization are extensively studied. An analytical-numerical method based on the dynamic strength of the bearing body frame of emergency and repair rail service car, assuming a beam-type pattern of its fluctuations with elastic fixing of the ends under harmonic load as it moves along the track with periodic joint roughness.

The following article presents fatigue testing and FEM numerical analysis of an autonomous electric vehicle, PAWO autonomous operational support platform. The purpose of the study, which was carried out in the ŁUKASIEWICZ – Automotive Industry Institute, was to verify the structure of the platform by forcing in three axes on the position: a table with six degrees of freedom "MAST", as well as conducting fatigue numerical analyses, allowing to determine places critical for fatigue endurance. This will be the starting point for the modification of the structure, and also will allow you to identify places that you need to pay attention to during tests and subsequent operation. The results of these tests allow us to determine critical places due to fatigue strength and possible intervention before starting field tests with a complete vehicle, as well as to detect places that should be noted during tests, inspections and tests, and in development versions of the vehicle.

The aim of the paper is to analyse an exemplary bolted connection under the conditions of loss of bearing capacity of some fasteners in the connection. The presented tests are numerical and concern an asymmetric bolted connection. The joined elements in the connection were modelled as 3D finite elements, and the fasteners were treated as hybrid models consisting of rigid heads and nuts, and flexible beams between them. The bolted connection was first preloaded according to six different tensioning orders using a standardised force. After all bolts were tensioned, the selected bolts were removed, simulating bolt damage. The connection was then tested for external loads with temperatures ranging from 20 to 600°C. The influence of loosening the connection on the load in the remaining bolts at the operational stage of the connection was investigated. The calculation results were compared with the test results for a healthy bolted connection. It was shown that the bearing capacity of the connection in the damaged state decreased by 13%.

The aim of the article was to present issues related to the strength analysis of one of the types of assembly joints - welded joints, taking into account the influence of selected factors: technological - welding method, construction - type of joints and material - type of joined material. The following welding methods were used (in accordance with the PN-EN ISO 4063 standard): arc welding in the shield of inert/active gases MIG/MAG (131/135), manual metal arc welding with a coated electrode MMA (111) and gas welding (oxyacetylene welding) (311).Butt joints and lap joints were made of CuZn37 copper alloy (PN-EN 1652), S235JR unalloyed structural steel (EN 10025) and 1.4301 acid-resistant steel (EN 10088). Welded joints samples were made with appropriate parameters, according to the welding methods. Strength tests of welded joints on MTS BIONIX 370.02 testing machine, in accordance with the PN-EN 1465 standard were provided. Based on the obtained test results, it can be seen that the value of stresses is affected by both the welding method and the type of joint structure, while the type of material to be welded should also be taken into account.
Celem artykułu było przedstawienie zagadnień związanych z analizą wytrzymałościową jednych z rodzajów połączeń montażowych - połączeń spawanych z uwzględnieniem wpływu wybranych czynników: technologicznych - metody spawania, konstrukcyjnych - rodzaju połączenia oraz materiałowych - rodzaju łączonego materiału. Zastosowano następujące metody spawania (zgodnie z normą PN-EN ISO 4063): spawanie łukowe elektrodą metalową w osłonie gazów obojętnych/aktywnych MIG/MAG (131/1355), spawanie łukowe elektrodą otuloną MMA (111) oraz spawanie gazowe acetylenowo-tlenowe (311). Wykonano połączenia doczołowe i zakładkowe stopu miedzi CuZn37 (PN-EN 1652) oraz stal niestopowa konstrukcyjna S235JR (EN 10025) oraz stal kwasoodporna 1.4301 (EN 10088). Próbki spawane wykonano przy odpowiednich parametrach, stosownie do metody spawania. Badania wytrzymałościowe połączeń spawanych przeprowadzono na maszynie wytrzymałościowej MTS BIONIX 370.02, zgodnie z normą PN-EN 1465. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników badań można zauważyć, że na wartość naprężeń ma wpływ zarówno metoda spawania, jak i rodzaj konstrukcji połączenia, przy czym należy uwzględnić także rodzaj spawanego materiału.

In the paper is presented an attempt of assessment of melting and modification effect on Rm tensile strength of Al-Si alloys poured into metallic moulds. Investigated alloys underwent refining and modification with AlSr10 master alloy. Run of the crystallization process was presented with the help of solidification curves, making use of thermal-voltage-derivative analysis (ATND). Obtained results comprise registered curves of solidification, strength tests, microstructure of the alloy and regression analysis. On base of performed regression analysis one obtained a dependencies enabling evaluation of Rm tensile strength of Al-Si alloys as early as on stage of their preparation (melting).
W pracy przedstawiono próbę oceny wpływu warunków procesu topienia i modyfikacji na wytrzymałość na rozciąganie Rm stopów Al-Si odlewanych do form metalowych. Stopy Al-Si poddano rafinacji i modyfikacji zaprawą AlSr10. Przebieg procesu krystalizacji charakteryzowano za pomocą krzywych krystalizacji. Stosowano metodę analizy termiczno-napięciowo-derywacyjnej (ATND). Wykonano próbę statyczną rozciągania oraz badania mikroskopowe wytworzonych stopów Al-Si. Analiza regresji stanowiła podstawę do uzyskania zależności pozwalającej określić prognozowaną wytrzymałość na rozciąganie Rm stopów Al-Si w procesie topienia i krystalizacji.

Testing of the fatigue strength along wood fibres at different moisture contents. The paper determines the effect of wood moisture content on the fatigue strength in compression along fibres. The method of determining the maximum stress at the proportional limit was used for the measurements. Fatigue strength was investigated for three wood species: pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), bearded birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L.), with two moisture contents: close to the absolutely dry state and above the fibre saturation point. The ratio of fatigue strength to short term strength depends on moisture content and is similar for birch (70.3% in the dry state and 72.1% in the wet state), for oak (67.4% and 69.5% in both states) and for spruce (66.6% in the dry state and 68.1% in the wet state). The moisture content of the wood clearly influences the fatigue strength of the wood. On average, the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents above the fibre saturation point constitutes about 0.20 of the fatigue strength of wood with moisture contents close to 0%. This tendency was found regardless of the tested species. The simplified method for testing fatigue strength at the limit of proportionality has shown its limited usefulness, requiring further analysis and comparison with other methods in order to be thoroughly tested and possibly improved.
Badanie wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej wzdłuż włókien drewna przy różnej wilgotności. W pracy określono wpływ wilgotności drewna na wytrzymałość zmęczeniową przy ściskaniu wzdłuż włókien. Do pomiarów wykorzystano metodę wyznaczania maksymalnego naprężenia na granicy proporcjonalności. Wytrzymałość zmęczeniową zbadano dla trzech gatunków drewna: dębu szypułkowego (Quercus robur L.), brzozy brodawkowatej (Betula pendula Roth.) i świerka pospolitego (Picea abies L.), o dwóch wilgotnościach: zbliżonej do stanu absolutnie suchego i powyżej punkt nasycenia włókien. Stosunek wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej do wytrzymałości chwilowej zależy od zawartości wilgoci i jest podobny dla brzozy (70,3% w stanie suchym i 72,1% w stanie mokrym), dębu (67,4% i 69,5% w obu stanach) oraz świerka (66,6 % w stanie suchym i 68,1% w stanie mokrym). Zawartość wilgoci w drewnie wyraźnie wpływa na wielkość wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej drewna. Średnio wytrzymałość zmęczeniowa drewna o wilgotności powyżej punktu nasycenia włókien stanowi 0,20 wytrzymałości drewna o wilgotności bliskiej 0%. Tendencję tę stwierdzono niezależnie od badanego gatunku. Uproszczona metoda badania wytrzymałości zmęczeniowej na granicy proporcjonalności wykazała swoją ograniczoną przydatność, wymagającą dalszej analizy i porównania z innymi metodami w celu dokładnego przetestowania i ewentualnego udoskonalenia.

There is an ever growing industrial demand for quantitative assessment of fatigue endurance of critical structural details. Although FEA-based calculations have become a standard in engineering design, problems involving the Low-To-Medium cycle range (101 -104 ) remain challenging. This paper presents an attempt to optimally choose material data, meshing density and other algorithm settings in the context of recent design of the large offshore windfarm installation vessel, VIDAR. In this study, an attempt is made to assess default FEA-based procedures in RADIOSS software by comparing an experimental test against numerical analyses. Standard slender cylindrical (“I”) samples as well as originally designed “Z”-shaped samples made of A90 (S690)-grade steel have been loaded at various nominal stress ranges with or without local yielding. A good correlation has been found between FEA results and experimental cycles-to-failure in I-shaped samples, provided the software material data generator is avoided and Smith-Watson-Topper mean stress correction is used. In the case of Z-shaped samples, the calculated cycles-to-initiation of macro-crack is significantly lower (factor of 3) from the experiment. The observed discrepancy is argued to be due to stress gradient influence.
