Opis:
The presented study focuses on the role of applied ethics(cist) in managing the quality of life in the post-risk society. Given that, from an ethical point of view, it is appropriate to reflect the quality of life also through other than quantitative, i.e. objective and therefore also measurable indicator, it is important to be also focused on the action of a person that leads to increasing his/her satisfaction, the feeling of happiness as a subjective indicator. The aim of this study is to point out the importance of ethical parameterization of the quality of life as well as the search for suitable concepts in its fulfilment.

Opis:
The main intention of this text is to show the interpretative track in the attempt to find the genealogy of expert appraisal. The main thesis expresses Zygmunt Bauman’s view of mutual connection between the weak and light status of identity in consumer culture and the tendency to create cultural practices in order to overcome that weakness, and to strengthen and confirm that status of identity. On the one hand, the main feature of consumer culture and our freedom expressed by consumption determines our identities and is the main reason for „corrosion of identity” (R. Sennett), but on the other hand it demands and generates the necessity of cultural institutions that guarantee its confirmation. Hence, we may find the reason for the so-called „counselling boom” and expansion of expert appraisal in our risk society. The presented text also shows the cultural background for cultural practices in the risk society and consists of the attempt to grasp social instant pedagogies. This phenomenon is analysed here by the role of advertisements and psychological guides as the main cultural practices of instant pedagogy. My intention seeks to bring to account often hidden and obvious practices, and to highlight in a critical manner the tendencies in our social milieu and in the face of „the unbearable lightness of consumption”.

OPSEC (Operations Security) model was developed during the Vietnam War era as a part of military strategies to protect critical information, analyzing vulnerabilities and threats, assessing risks and applying proper countermeasures. 5 steps OPSEC model have been functional for US Army’s operational security and used by other NATO members as well. When threats have spread widely in 21 st Century OPSEC began to be used and applied in a more general context of security world. Today even in cyber security this model serves practically for protection of critical data and information. In this paper we are going to proceed in two levels: on the one hand we will explain the OPSEC principles, steps and conceptual aspects through the main sources of this field; on the other hand we will discuss applications of the model in real world (military, politics, industry, etc.) via some explanatory examples and its potential usages for securing modern life and societies. Our approach will be based on an interdisciplinary view with references to sociology, security studies and management.

Opis:
This article explores the lay constructions of genetic risk, the right not to know and the obligation to do a genetic test, know the risk and share genetic information with others. The study was carried out on 27 members of the Polish Society of Huntington’s Disease. I describe their understanding of bioethics and their arguments for and against the right not to know. I argue that lay perceptions of the risk, rights and obligations mentioned above are shaped not only by the type of genetic disease involved but also depend on the social group to which it poses a threat and/or costs. Consequently, such obligations are framed toward: future generations, family members, society, the State and oneself. I also argue that genetics is turning families into bioethicists who, as lay experts, become one of the key players in the biomedicalization of society and bioethicization of genetic discourse.

Opis:
Purpose: The objective of the article is to verify the degree of fulfilment (in the perception of recipients) of individual functions of pandemic illustrations. Secondly, the objective is to establish to what extent pandemic illustrations involve all modules of the so-called experience economy. Design/methodology/approach: As part of the research procedure, a CAWI questionnaire was used, and the study covered a representative sample of 1 000 adult Poles. The conclusions were related to the changes in the impact on the perception of homo videns during times of covid, which is particularly important in the conditions of current pro-health campaigns. Findings: The potential of pandemic illustrations has not been fully exploited. Pandemic illustrations fulfill a preventive function, i.e. they have a functional meaning. The deficits concern not only the use of the pandemic illustration functions, but also the experience modules they represent. Research limitations/implications: Survey research according to a questionnaire developed by the authors. No comparison possible, because pandemic illustrations only appeared in connection with COVID-19. Practical implications: Illustrations should find wider use in economic sciences due to their impact on the speed of acquiring knowledge, motivation and stimulating creativity. Social implications: Pandemic illustrations will generate not only economic but also sociocultural value in the form of: aesthetic, spiritual, social, historical, symbolic and authentic values. Originality/value: The research issues undertaken regarding pandemic illustrations include influencing their recipients through strategic experience modules (sensory module, emotional module, intellectual module, behavioural module and relational module).

Opis:
The civil society and the social movements have been key players in the debate on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Brazil, even though they don´t present homogeneous positions: some of these organizations are in favor, while others are contrary to the use and dissemination of GMOs, questioning the official designation of risks established by scientists and politicians. The paper initially summarizes the role of civil society and social move-ments in the country in the 15 years of disputes about GMOs. Then, it presents the perceptions of 15 Brazilian organizations related to GMOs, based on interviews about their current position on the theme. The results show that the disputes regarding GMOs can be considered as discussions of risks, and the notion of risk varies according to the perspective of the actors. They include concerns about environmental, ethical, health and socioeconomic issues. Organizations against GMOs emphasize that their use could create an economic dependence of small farmers, while those in favor argue that GMOs are essential to the competitiveness of the Brazilian agriculture. This duality is more re-lated to the conventional debate about rural development in the country rather than the perception of new risks introduced by GMOs
