Opis:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a Step Aerobics Training (SAT) on the skin temperature (Tsk) in different regions (ROI) of the anterior body surface. The study included 15 healthy volunteers of the Bialystok University of Technology (BUT) without any previous experience in SAT training. Two sets of thermograms were recorded before and immediately after exercise at the first and last sessions of a 30-weeks SAT program with a progressive intensity. The results indicate a generalized drop in body temperature immediately after exercise with ΔTsk values of -2.45ºC registered immediately after the first training and lower drops (ΔTsk = -1.69ºC) after the 30 weeks of SAT. The regions with lower values of post- vs pre-exercise Tsk were the thighs both in the first session and in the last session of the 30-weeks SAT program. The results show non-significant variations for asymmetries between the values of the contralateral ROIs in every moment of the data collection. We concluded that a 30-week SAT program resulted in significant drop of mean Tsk of evaluated body parts (ROI), being the thermal effects related with the areas more activated in the sport practice. From the thermal asymmetries perspective, the training program carried out did not generate any injury risk for the participants.

Objectives: In healthy people, the vibrotactile perception threshold (VPT) at fingertips depends on a given measurement method and on individual characteristics such as age, gender and finger skin temperature. The aim of the study was to compare the VPT values in 2 groups of healthy subjects with different finger skin temperature. Materials and Methods: The study group comprised 56 males and 76 females, who formed pairs matched with respect to age, gender and body mass index (BMI) but differing in terms of finger skin temperature at pre-launch testing. The finger skin temperature of less than 29°C indicated the subjects with "cold hands" and that of more than 29°C, the subjects with "warm hands". The measuring system made use of P8 pallesthesiometer (EMSON-MAT, Poland) and the measurement procedure was in compliance with the ISO 13091-1:2001 standard. VPT measurements were performed for the index, middle and ring fingers of both hands at the frequencies of 4 Hz, 25 Hz, 31.5 Hz, 63 Hz, 125 Hz and 250 Hz. Results: The findings of the study revealed that the mean VPTs among the subjects with "cold hands" were significantly higher than the corresponding values among the subjects with "warm hands". Conclusions: The type of individual peripheral thermoregulation should be considered when assessing the VPT and determining its reference values.

Opis:
Objectives The objective of this study has been to evaluate the occupational heat exposure of 12 workers at 5 plants in a subtropical country. Material and Methods The heat stresses and strain on workers in 5 plants were assessed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 7243 index (wet bulb globe temperature – WBGT) and the ISO 7933 index (maximum allowable exposure time – $ \text{D}_\text{lim} $). Results Results indicated that 42% of the subjects (5 workers) surpassed the WBGT limits. According to the $ \text{D}_\text{lim} $, 42% of the subjects could not continue working in the hot environments. The relationships between the various heat stress indices and the WBGT index were also correlated. However, further studies from different heat environments and more subjects should be performed. Conclusions The sensitive dependence of skin temperature on meteorological and physiological indices for each subject was clearly observed. Obviously, the heart rate response to metabolic rate was much greater than that caused by environmental heat alone. The exponential relationship between workers’ duration-limited exposure time, predicted by various estimated criteria, and WBGT were also found. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(3):379–395

Opis:
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 kinds of underwear made from hydrophobic and hydrophilic fabrics on the mean skin temperatures and clothing microclimate (temperature, humidity) in participants performing intermittent exercise in cold environmental conditions. One or 2 layers of cotton underwear (C1, C2) with a 2-piece long-sleeved shirt and long-legged trousers, and 1 or 2 layers of polypropylene underwear (P1, P2) with a 2-piece long-sleeved shirt and long-legged trousers were used as experimental underwear. In addition, the participants wore a 2-piece ski suit as 100% polyester clothing including 100% polyester padding. Ten young adult females volunteered as participants. The experiments were performed in a climatic chamber at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 0°C and an air velocity of 0.26 m s-1. The major findings are summarized as follows: (a) Although the clothing microclimate humidity was not different within the ski suit of outer clothing between C1 and P1, it was significantly higher in P2 than in C2; (b) Clothing microclimate temperature inside the ski suit did not differ between C1 and P1, whereas it was significantly higher in P2 than in C2; (c) The thermal gradient between innermost and outermost of clothing microclimate at back level did not show any difference between C1 and P1, but it was significantly higher in C2 than in P2. These results are discussed in terms of thermal physiology and clothing sciences.

This paper was aimed at evaluating the mental work-load (MWL) with psycho-physiological indices. Especially, we focused on the intermittent type of MWL, which is assumed as a predisposing factor of various somatic and mental disorders. In the experiment, we introduced a facial skin thermo image comparing with conventional physiological indices, such as electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG). As a result, the facial skin image was suggested to be a useful tool for evaluating such an intermittent type of MWL.

Opis:
Thermal manikins were created with the intention to design and model protective clothing insulation for specific conditions, e.g. military clothing and clothing for divers. At present thermal manikins have a broader use, i.e. to assess the effect of clothing on a human body, to assess its influence on thermal comfort during work in a given clothing ensemble and to test innovative solutions bringing about a reduction in the thermal heat load. When using thermal manikins it should be borne in mind that heat exchange through clothing is, to a large extent, determined by the temperature distribution on human skin. The aim of the study was to find out to what extent thermal manikins can be used to represent the correct distribution of temperature on human skin. To this end, comparative measurements of the temperature distribution on the surface of a standard thermal manikin with a structure generally used and on the surface of the skin of volunteers were performed. The tests conducted showed that for the further development of thermal manikins computer software should be developed which would help to predict the temperature distribution on the manikin surface corresponding to the skin temperature of volunteers. Such software should allow for the simulation of thermal regulatory mechanisms in a human, i.e. an increase in skin temperature caused by vasoconstriction and shivering, as well as a decrease in skin temperature due to vasodilatation and sweating. In a thermally neutral environment, the methods which are currently used to control the thermal manikin seem to be sufficient.
Termiczne manekiny zostały opracowane w celu projektowania i modelowania izolacyjności cieplnej odzieży ochronnej. Obecnie manekiny termiczne mają szerokie zastosowanie badawcze.

This study compared the methods of determining footwear insulation on human participants and a thermal foot model. Another purpose was to find the minimal number of measurement points on the human foot that is needed for insulation calculation. A bare foot was tested at 3 ambient temperatures on 6 participants. Three types of footwear were tested on 2 participants. The mean insulation for a bare foot obtained on the participant and model were similar. The insulation of warm footwear measured by the 2 methods was also similar. For thin footwear the insulation values from the participants were higher than those from the thermal model. The differences could be related to undefined physiological factors. Two points on the foot can be enough to measure the insulation of footwear on human participants (r = .98). However, due to the big individual differences of humans, and good repeatability and simplicity of the thermal foot method, the latter should be preferred for testing.

The influence of footwear insulation on foot skin temperature in the cold at low activity was investigated. Simultaneously, the thermal and pain sensations, and the influence of steel toe cap were studied. Eight participants were exposed for 85 min to 3 environmental temperatures ( + 3, — 12, and —25°C) wearing 5 different boots. Insulation of footwear was determined with a thermal foot model. The study showed the importance of insulation forkeeping feet warm. Other factors, such as wetness and vasomotor response, however, modified the thermal response. The most affected parts were toes and heels. Cold and pain sensations were connected with considerably lower temperatures in these local points. No significant differences were observed between boots with and without steel toe cap.

Opis:
The study presents experiments, conducted with human subjects in an artificial cold chamber, assessing the influence of a cold environment on the temperature of the human body. Infrared thermography was applied as a non-invasive, contactless method for direct measurement of the temperature distribution of both clothed and uncovered parts of the body. Two subzero temperatures were applied and clothing ensembles with two different clothing insulation values were used to assess the effect of the clothing insulation of the torso on the temperature of clothed and uncovered parts of the body of the participants. The average temperature of the chest, back, upper arms, face and middle finger is presented and discussed in relation to the cold exposure duration and clothing insulation used. The results obtained showed the strong influence of the clothing insulation over the torso on skin and clothing temperatures of the body and overall cooling of the body in subzero temperatures.

This study was designed to find the effects of two kinds of dust-free garments with (A) and without (B) frozen gel strip (FGS), and half-naked clothing (brassiere and shorts; C) on thermophysiological parameters and on temperature and humidity within clothing. The heart rate, rectal, and skin temperatures as well as sweat rate and clothing microclimate were measured during 140 min in 9 healthy females. Inquiries were also made into the subjective rating of thermal, humidity, and comfort sensations. The main findings in our experiments are as follows: (a) Physiological parameters such as rectal and skin temperatures (chest and forehead), heart rate, and sweat rate were clearly lowest in garb C, intermediate in garb A, and highest in garb B throughout the experiment; (b) Temperature and humidity within clothing were lower in garb A than in garb B; (c) More than half of the 9 participants decreased thermal sensation by wearing garb A. These results suggest that the usage of FGS could improve the heat load in lightly working participants wearing dust-free garments.

The results of studies investigating the effects of storage time and temperature on variations in Poisson ratio of the skin of two greenhouse tomato varieties – Admiro and Encore were presented. In the initial period of the study, Poisson ratio of the skin of tomato fruit cv. Admiro, stored at 13°C, varied between 0.7 and 0.8. After the successive 10 days of the experiment, it decreased to approximately 0.6 and was stabilized until the end of study. By contrast, the skin of tomatoes cv. Encore was characterized by lower values and lower variability of Poisson ratio in the range of 0.4 to 0.5 during storage. The examinations involving tomato fruit cv. Admiro stored at 21°C were completed after 12 days due to fruit softening and progressive difficulty with preparing analytical specimens. The value of Poisson ratio for both varieties stored at roomtemperature fluctuated throughout the experiment to approximate 0.5.
