Opis:
Up-to-date, of high-tech design techniques of machine operation require constant monitoring on some levels. Generally, the monitoring today is limited to failure detection and machinery components check. The Marine Engineering Faculty of Gdynia Maritime University designed the System for Marine Engine Operation Assistance on the basis of Sulzer Diesel AL 25/30 testing station. The engine modernization and wider research and survey capabilities resulted in engine operation quality improvement, marine power plant research enhancement. The project broadens the research range and engine failure expertise as well as takes into consideration innovative marine fuel emissions. The goal has been achieved in the way of the test equipment modernization including: effective pressure sensors, high pressure fuel sensors, monitoring and visualization of the engine systems’ parameters, electronic indictors adopted to continuous operation at all cylinders in the same time, and high class decision aid computer equipment. Engine modernization and data base extension allow for carrying out a wide scope of research. Additionally, the article presents innovative diagnostic solutions together with their applications.

In the paper, numeric calculations relating to the influence of engine speed on thermal stresses of the piston in a turbocharged diesel engine in the initial phase of its work were carried out. The calculations were based on experimental studies and the data resulting from them. They were made using a geometrical model of the piston in a turbocharged diesel engine with a capacity of 2,300 cm3 , with a direct fuel injection to the combustion chamber and a power rating of 85 kW. Modelling of the thermal stresses of the piston was carried out for the engine speed n=2,000 min-1 and n=4,250 min-1

The paper reports a computer model for simulating dynamic responses in fuel rail of aircraft diesel engine. The fuel system was designed for use in a two-stroke compression-ignition engine with opposite pistons. The methodology of building a fuel system model in the AVL Hydsim program and the results of simulation studies were presented. Determination of dynamic phenomena in the fuel rail required the construction of a model of the entire supply system. It is a common rail system with a three-section positive displacement pump and electromagnetic fuel injectors. The system is also equipped with a PID regulator to maintain the present pressure in the fuel rail. For the purposes of the research, two structures of the fuel rail were developed. They differ in dimensions, spacing of the outlet ports and location of the high-pressure connection. The research allowed determining the interactions between the geometry of the fuel rail and the supply method with the fuel pressure and injector mass flow rate. This will optimise the design of the fuel rail for the three-cylinder engine power supply system.

Opis:
Turbocharged diesel engine used for electric generator was converted to run on natural gas. Modification of the engine included engine head, piston, spark ignition set, fuel delivery system and intake system. During laboratory tests the performance maps of the gas engine were taken at 1500 rpm. The following measurements were performed: - Composition of exhaust gases (NO[x], CO, CO2 etc.); - Temperature of exhaust gases; - Pressure in combustion chamber; - Fuel consumption; - Electric power produced by generator. Computations of combustion process in gas engine were made with the use of KIVA3V computer code. Several ignition angles and equivalence ratios were considered in the study. Results of computations include: - Temperature distribution in combustion chamber; - Pressure distribution in combustion chamber; - NO[x] emission concentration; - CO2 and CO emissions; - OH concentration distribution in combustion chamber; - Velocity and turbulence kinetic energy field in combustion chamber; - Overall indicated pressure and temperature of the cycle. All calculation were performed for original and modified engine combustion chamber geometry with one and two spark plugs.
W pracy przedstawiono stacjonarny turboładowany silnik wysokoprężny, który został przystosowany do zasilania gazem ziemnym. Modyfikacje obejmowały głowicę, tłok, układ zapłonowy, układ zasilania i dolotu. Podczas badań hamownianych wykonano charakterystyki silnika gazowego przy prędkości obrotowej 1500 obr/min. Wykonano następujące pomiary: - Skład spalin (NO[x], CO, CO2 itd.); - Temperatura spalin; - Ciśnienie w komorze spalania; - Zużycie paliwa; - Moc elektryczna wytwarzana przez prądnice. Symulacje procesu spalania w silniku gazowym wykonano przy użyciu programu komputerowego KIVA3V. Przeanalizowano wpływ kąta wyprzedzania zapłonu i wskaźnika ekwiwalencji. Wyniki obliczeń obejmują: - Rozkład temperatur w komorze spalania; - Rozkład ciśnienia w komorze spalania; - Emisja NO[x]; - Emisje CO2 i CO; - Rozkład koncentracji OH w komorze spalania; - Pole prędkości i energii kinetycznej turbulencji w komorze spalania; - Uśrednione wartości ciśnienia i temperatury obiegu. Wszystkie obliczenia były przeprowadzone dla oryginalnej i zmodyfikowanej geometrii komory spalania z jedną i dwiema świecami zapłonowymi.

In this study, an experiment was conducted to examine the AVL research diesel engine using two kinds of waterdiesel (W-D) fuel microemulsions. These W-D mixtures contained 3.5 and 7.0% by volume (%, v/v) of distilled water dispersed in regular diesel fuel meeting the requirements of the EN590 standard. The engine was tested under the conditions of low, moderate and higher loads. This research was focused on the emission characteristics of nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ) and nitrogen monoxide (NO). Cumulative emission of NOx was also analyzed before being further discussed. The obtained results of this study showed that the addition of distilled water to the regular diesel fuel has a minor effect on the variation of the nitrogen oxides emission. It was confirmed that NO is the main component of NOx detected in the exhaust stream of the AVL engine fuelled with all tested fuels. It proves that the thermal mechanism of the nitrogen oxides formation was dominant in the combustion process. Moreover, it was found that the addition of water dispersed as microemulsion in diesel fuel had a minor effect on the reduction of the NOx emission.

The paper presents the methodology for calculations based on the Newton’s method which was used to determine the characteristics of test unit injector systems. It allowed simplification of the research process by preserving a minimum number of measuring points and estimation of other data analytically. Results were compared with the real experimental results obtaining satisfactory accuracy of approximations. The proposed methodology was adapted to a standard spreadsheet so that changes in pre-set parameters and required computations could be made on a regular basis, which in addition shortened the time of their performance.
W artykule przedstawiono metodykę obliczeń opartą na metodzie Newtona, którą zastosowano do wyznaczenia charakterystyk probierczych pompowtryskiwaczy. Umożliwiła ona uproszczenie procesu badawczego przez zachowanie minimalnej liczby punktów pomiarowych i oszacowanie pozostałych danych w sposób analityczny. Rezultaty odniesiono do rzeczywistych wyników doświadczalnych, uzyskując zadowalającą dokładność przybliżeń. Proponowaną metodykę zaadaptowano do standardowego arkusza kalkulacyjnego, dzięki czemu zmianę parametrów zadanych i wymagane obliczenia prowadzono na bieżąco, co dodatkowo skróciło czas ich realizacji.

The measurement of combustion pressure relies on connecting a pressure sensor to a four-stroke marine engine cylinder by a channel led out from the engine cylinder. The geometry of the channel distorts the results of combustion pressure measurements. The purpose of the work is to create a model of combustion processes in engine cylinders. The model uses a mathematical description of the indicator channel on one of the engine cylinders. The input data to the model and the data necessary for its verification came from the direct measurements on the research facility. The test object was a four-stroke Sulzer 3AL25/30 engine loaded by an electric power generator. During calculations, different diameters and lengths of measurement channel were simulated. The obtained results allowed to formulate the conclusion that the geometry of the measurement channel has a significant impact on the measurement results. The increase of the length of the measuring channel as well as the diameter of the channel causes disturbances in the measurement of the maximum pressure.

The article presents results of research on noise emission from AD3.152 diesel engine powered by blends of diesel fuel (DF) and ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE). Measurements were executed in steady-state conditions for different engine partial loads, crankshaft rotational speeds and angles of fuel injection start. The research shows that engine noise emission increases for all tested ETBE/diesel blends in comparison to pure diesel fuel. The highest values of noise emission were recorded for ETBE40. Preliminary analysis of the combustion process suggests that noise emissions increase in line with the value of in-cylinder pressure.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań emisji hałasu silnika AD 3.152 zasilanego mieszaninami standardowego oleju napędowego i eteru etylo-tert-butylowego. Pomiary wykonano w warunkach ustalonych dla różnych obciążeń częściowych, prędkości obrotowej wału korbowego i kątów początku wtrysku paliwa. Badania pokazują, że emisja hałasu silnika wzrastała dla wszystkich badanych mieszanin paliwowych w stosunku do oleju napędowego. Największe wartości emisji hałasu zarejestrowano dla ETBE40. Wstępna analiza procesu spalania wskazuje, że emisja hałasu wzrasta wraz z prędkością narastania ciśnienia w komorze spalania.

Celem badań było określenie wpływu biopaliw z oleju posmażalniczego (OP) na parametry energetyczne silnika ZS. Przedmiotem badań było wytworzenie biopaliw metodą estryfikacji niskotemperaturowej i zasilanie nim silnika ZS napędzającego ciągnik rolniczy URSUS 1224. Badania o charakterze porównawczym były prowadzone na znormalizowanym oleju napędowym, zgodnym z normą jakości EN590 i otrzymanym na potrzeby badań paliwem. Badania parametrów energetycznych silnika były realizowane używając mobilną hamownię silnikową PT 301 MES i paliwomierz AMX 212F. Do wytworzenia estrów metylowych (EMOP) użyto olej posmażalniczy, alkohol metylowy w proporcji molowej 1:6 (olej:metanol) i katalizator alkaliczny, wodorotlenek potasu, w ilości 1,7% (m/m). Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że moc silnika zasilonego biopaliwami z oleju posmażalniczego była mniejsza o 7% względem uzyskanej mocy silnika zasilonego znormalizowanym olejem napędowym. Zaobserwowano 8% wzrost ogólnego zużycia biopaliw względem oleju napędowego. Sprawność cieplna badanego silnika, niezależnie od stosowanego paliwa, wyniosła 30%.
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of biodiesel from waste cooking oil on the energy characteristics of diesel engines. The object of the research was the production of biofuels by low-temperature transesterification process and use it to powered diesel engine in tractor URSUS 1224. Diesel fuel in accordance with the European standard EN 590 and waste cooking oil methyl esters were used for comparative tests. The energy characteristics of diesel engine were determined using a mobile break of engine PT 301 MES and a fuel gauge AMX 212F. To In order to produce biodiesel, waste cooking oil, methyl alcohol in a molar ratio of 1:6 (oil: methanol) and an alkaline catalyst, potassium hydroxide, in the amount of 1.7% (m/m) were used. The results of the test showed that engines using biodiesel from waste cooking oil produces 7% less power relative to engines powered by normalized diesel fuel. The general consumption of fuel increased to 8% relative to diesel fuel. The thermal efficiency of the test engine was 30%, independent of the kind of fuel.

This paper investigated the impact of the exhaust gas recirculation on the concentration of selected harmful chemical compounds from the AVL 5402 research diesel engine powered with diesel fuel (DF) and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine was operated in the dual fuel mode. It means that the engine was conventionally fuelled by regular diesel fuel and simultaneously by CNG dosed into the inlet pipe. The necessary tests were carried out for the mixtures containing 30, 50 and 70% of CNG (by energy content) in the total chemical energy delivered together with diesel fuel (DF) into the combustion chamber. The research was conducted for the stationary conditions of the engine operation at 1200 rpm and constant 1004 Joules of a fuel chemical energy delivered in each cycle into the combustion chamber. Under such conditions, the impact of the EGR rate changed in range of 0–50% on the emissions of selected unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) as well as particulate matter (PM), was evaluated. The obtained results confirmed that the EGR system is effective in the reduction of the NOx formation for all tested fuel mixtures. Nevertheless, it was found that the addition of CNG combusted in the diesel engine generates more harmful pollutants in comparison with diesel fuel. However, in some cases the concentration of NOx as well as PM was comparable or lower. It suggests that the combustion of CNG in diesels allows achieving environmental benefits. In this case, further optimization of the engine fuel supply system is necessary.

The water cooled exhaust systems are not often used onboard ships. Prime goal is to lower temperature of exhaust gas from main propulsion and auxiliary engines to the defined limit. The design of such systems require detailed analysis of propulsion system operational parameters to meet designer expectations. The paper outlines the cooled exhaust system design problems in specific application. The simplified method of evaluation of expected cooling water flow requirements has been developed. Based on marine diesel engines test bench data, the results of short analysis of cooling water demand for two different diesel engines are presented. A simplified engineering approach may be useful for assessment of exhaust gas cooling system performance in commercial application like rescue vessels wet exhaust design or exhaust gas cleaning systems.

Modern transport is still based on vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. Due to stricter ecological requirements, the designers of engines are continually challenged to develop more environmentally friendly engines with the same power and performance. Unfortunately, there are not any significant novelties and innovations available at present which could significantly change the current direction of the development of this type of propulsion machines. That is why the existing ones should be continually developed and improved or optimized their performance. By optimizing, we tend to minimize fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions in order to meet the norms defined by standards (i.e. Euro standards). Those propulsion engines are actually developed to such extent that our current thinking will not be able to change their basic functionality, but possible opportunities for improvement, especially the improvement of individual components, could be introduced. The latter is possible by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) which can relatively quickly and inexpensively produce calculations prior to prototyping and implementation of accurate measurements on the prototype. This is especially useful in early stages of development or at optimization of dimensional small parts of the object where the physical execution of measurements is impossible or very difficult. With advances of computational fluid dynamics, the studies on the nozzles and outlet channel injectors have been relieved. Recently, the observation and better understanding of the flow in nozzles at large pressure and high velocity is recently being possible. This is very important because the injection process, especially the dispersion of jet fuel, is crucial for the combustion process in the cylinder and consequently for the composition of exhaust gases. And finally, the chemical composition of the fuel has a strong impact on the formation of dangerous emissions, too. The research presents the influence of various volume mesh types on flow characteristics inside a fuel injector nozzle. Our work is based upon the creating of two meshes in the CFD software package. Each of them was used two times. First, a time-dependent mass flow rate was defined at the inlet region and pressure was defined at the outlet. The same mesh was later used to perform a simulation with a defined needle lift curve (and hereby the mesh movement) and inlet and outlet pressure. In next few steps we investigated which approach offered better results and would thus be most suitable for engineering usage.

Opis:
The power and efficiency of a two-stroke engine strongly depends on the efficiency of the scavenging process which consists in removing the rest of the exhaust gases from the cylinder and filling it with a fresh charge. The quality of the charge exchange process is significantly influenced by the construction of the intake system. The paper presents a zero-dimensional model of the aircraft two-stroke opposed-piston diesel engine with two variants of the intake system: with a mechanical compressor and a turbocharger connected in series with a mechanical compressor. Simulation studies of the developed cases were carried out in the AVL BOOST software. For the defined engine operating points, its performance was compared for different designs of the intake system. It was confirmed that the use of a turbocharger with a mechanical compressor extends the range of operating at high altitudes.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of experimental studies of the opposed-piston diesel engine. This engine was designed during one of the stages of the research on a new-type drive unit for gyrocopter applications. In order to conduct research, a special test stand as well as control and measurement systems were developed. As part of the work on the engine, the fuel injection system, engine temperature control system and measurement systems were designed. In addition, a computer program has been developed for the fuel injection system control (injectors, valves fuel pressure regulators). The paper presents the results of the preliminary tests for a single value of engine speed (1500 rpm) and three values of load defined by torque. The measured value of the indicated pressure made it possible to calculate the maximum pressure. The results obtained from the bench tests were analyzed.
