Opis:
In many birds, especially in monomorphic species and breeds, it is difficult to distinguish between sexes due to lack of phenotypic differences. Originally, sex identification was based on behavioural observations, structure of the pelvis and certain anatomical features. Direct methods, such as endoscopy, laparoscopy and laparotomy, have been widely criticized for being highly invasive, stressful and difficult, especially when the size of birds is considered. Karyotyping fails in some species (ostrich, emu) due to similarity of their sex chromosomes and can be used only in case of the species with heteromorphic female ZW sex chromosomes. With the advances of molecular diagnostics new methods of sex identification have been developed and these include hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). An effective method of sex identification in pigeons uses CHD1 gene, which is present both in Z and W chromosomes.

Opis:
Prostitution has not received the academic interest it deserves in Poland. On the one hand the issue of eroticism and human sexuality is a relatively strong cultural taboo, on the other research on prostitution raises numerous methodological difficulties. The purpose of this article is to explore two issues. The first is go back to unsatisfactory attempts to define the commercial sex. The second is to look at legal regulations regarding this issue in Poland and several European countries. At the level of sociological reflection, prostitution can be defined by referring to the elements of a specific interaction between two people, one o whom offers paid sex and the other of whom is interested in using such a service. Prostitution is defined completely differently in law and in several European countries, for example in Great Britain and Austria there are interesting legal provisions. But I propose my own definition of prostitution or sex work in which the eight elements are combined. As far as legal regulations of prostitution are concern four categories of countries can be mentioned in Europe. From these in which the provision and purchase of sexual services is prohibited, to those where prostitution is legal and the professional status of the person engaging in it is regulated. There is also variety of perceptions of prostitution as a social phenomenon and different typologies of policies implemented by individual countries. But it appears that further studies on sex business and prostitution as a social phenomenon are needed.

Sexuality is a significant pillar of a romantic relationship, and sexual satisfaction is closely related to the stability of the relationship as well as satisfaction associated with it. The aim of this paper was to briefly characterize the sex life of Poles, especially regarding safe sex, sexual assertiveness and satisfaction with sexual life. A Poland-wide on-line survey was conducted between January and March 2019. 2205 anonymous answers were analyzed. To compare the knowledge of heterosexual and non-heterosexual persons, medical students were excluded from both groups. We identified three studied populations: heterosexuals excluding medical students, non-heterosexuals excluding medical students and medical students. Participants were asked for taking a stance to a few statements. The majority of respondents declared that their sexual contacts are always as safe as they want and they can easily refuse sexual contact with another person. Furthermore, most of the respondents were also satisfied with their sex life, especially the group of medical students.

Objectives The main purpose of the study was to investigate the association between sex and the level of information stress, as mediated by affective temperaments. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 231 healthy Caucasian adults (150 women and 81 men) recruited from a general population. The participants’ age ranged 18–56 years (M±SD = 25.07±6.36). Affective temperaments were assessed using the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Auto-questionnaire (TEMPS-A). To assess the level of information stress, the Information Stress Questionnaire (ISQ) was used. Results Information stress displayed low to medium positive correlations with depressive, cyclothymic, irritable and anxious temperaments, and a negative correlation with the hyperthymic temperament. The female group was characterized with significantly higher age, information stress, and anxious temperament values, and with a significantly lower irritable temperament value, when compared to males. Cyclothymic temperament, anxious temperament and hyperthymic temperament were found to be significant predictors of information stress. The mediation analysis showed a significant direct effect of sex on information stress. The anxious temperament was a significant mediator of the relationship between sex and information stress. Conclusions The results showed the relationship between sex and information stress, including the role of anxious temperament as a mediator. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(5):635–44

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to present the findings of an empirical study which contributes to the ongoing research into gender effects on second language acquisition by exploring a biological influence on L2 pronunciation learning. One of the most frequent arguments used to vindicate single-sex education is that there are substantial sensory and perceptual differences between males and females which rationalize gender-specific teaching methods and gender-segregation at schools. The present study provides some preliminary insights into the perception of selected phonetic contrasts by Polish secondary school learners with the aim of investigating gender-based similarities and differences in the accuracy of sound recognition by males and females. The findings suggest that a commonly cited female advantage in acquiring L2 pronunciation cannot be attributed to their superior phonetic perception, as male participants performed equally well and identified the same number of English segments correctly.

Opis:
The legalization of same-sex relationships has always been a controversial subject. Ireland is a good example of such a case, which decided to legalize same-sex marriages following a referendum held in 2015. Conclusions which stem from the Irish experience in this matter can provide valuable lessons for those countries that have not yet legalized one-sex marriages. The subject of this article is an analysis of the path that Ireland has undertaken to legalize same-sex marriages and an indication of current Irish regulations concerning these marriages. The aim is to discuss legal evolution of the institution of same-sex marriages in Ireland and its consequences for the constitutional order and social perception of the Irish citizens. Due to the fact that there is a lack of complex legal research of this subject in Poland, this article constitutes a gap-filling study. The article has a scientific and research character and may constitute a contribution to further legal considerations on the issue of same-sex marriages in the EU states.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the sex (gender) differentiation of indirect self-destructiveness intensity and its manifestations, as well as relationships between indirect self-destructiveness and its manifestations (categories) and the psychological dimensions of masculinity and femininity, also from the point of view of assessing occupational health and safety. Materials and Methods: A population of 558 individuals (399 females and 159 males) aged 19–25 (mean age: 22.6) was studied. The Polish version of the “Chronic Self-Destructiveness Scale” (CS-DS) by Kelley adapted by Suchańska was used in order to examine indirect self-destructiveness and its manifestations. Gender testing applied the Polish version of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) by Bem in its adaptation by Kuczyńska. Results: Males’ scores are signifi cantly higher than those of females for the majority of CS-DS scales/indices: Indirect Self-Destructiveness (general index), Poor Health Maintenance (A2), Lack of Planfulness (A4), and Helplessness, Passiveness (A5). Moreover, there are statistically signifi cant correlations between CS-DS scales and the masculinity dimension (positive) as well as the femininity dimension (negative). Conclusions: Masculinity is a factor that may predispose towards indirectly self-destructive behaviors, while femininity is a factor protecting against those. The study results may prove useful in preventing indirectly and directly self-destructive behaviors as well as in therapy work with the individuals who display such tendencies or have made attempts on their own lives, in particular taking into account their being of a specifi c sex/gender and in the context of work (especially in diffi cult or dangerous conditions or both).
