Opis:
This paper presents the modeling approaches and results of numerical investigations into particle separation in a production-scale industrial centrifugal air separator. The gaseous phase was modeled using an Eulerian formulation, while the particle phase was modeled using a Lagrangian particle tracking approach. Two-way coupling between continuous and disperse phase was included and turbulence modeled using the realizable k-ε model. The resulting comprehensive system model provides correct predictions of the power consumption and of pressure losses in the device over the full operation range, and proved ability of accurately predicting the size-dependent particle separation efficiencies down to nominal particle sizes of 2 µm.

Comparative calculations with a mathematical model designed by the authors, which takes into consideration energy transfer from gas flowing through a given channel to gas which penetrates this channel from an adjacent channel, as well as a model which omits this phenomenon, respectively, were made for the process of separating gas mixtures carried out with an inert sweep gas in the fourend capillary membrane module. Calculations were made for the process of biogas separation using a PMSP polymer membrane, relative to helium as the sweep gas. It was demonstrated that omitting the energy transfer in the mathematical model might lead to obtaining results which indicate that the capacity of the process expressed by the value of feed flux subjected to separation is by several percent higher than in reality.

Opis:
The process line of concentrating iron ore materials is considered as a sequence of connected concentration units, some of which partially return ore materials to the previous unit. The output product of the final concentration unit in the process line is the end product of the whole line. Characteristics of ore, such as distribution of ore particles by size and distribution of iron content by size classes, are considered. Processing of iron ore materials by process units (a cycle, a scheme) is characterised by a separation characteristic – namely the function of extracting elementary fractions depending on physical properties of ore particles. The results of fraction analysis of ore samples in different points of the process line provide an experimental definition of separation characteristics and numerical values of the Rosin–Rammler equation factors. To identify dependencies that cannot be analytically described, the hybrid approach accompanied by the Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy models, in accompaniment with triangular membership functions determining fuzzy sets in preconditions, are used. To identify fuzzy sets in rule preconditions, triangular membership functions are used. Introduction of a-priori data on iron ore concentration as constraints for model parameters is a promising trend of further research, since it enables increased accuracy of identification despite limited availability of experimental data.

Standards for highly toxic and carcinogenic pollutants impose strict guidelines, requiring values close to zero, regarding the degradation of such pollutants in industrial streams. In many cases, classic bioremoval processes fail. Therefore, we proposed a stream leaving the microbial membrane bioreactor (MBR) that is directed to an additional membrane separation mode (NF/RO). Under certain conditions, the integrated process not only benefits the environment but may also increase the profitability of the bioreactor operation. An appropriate model was developed and tested in which the bioremoval of benzene and toluene by Pseudomonas fluorescens was used as an example. This paper presents equations for selecting the operation parameters of the integrated system to achieve the expected degree of industrial wastewater purification.

Opis:
Model systems such as black lipid membranes or conventional uni- or multilamellar liposomes are commonly used to study membrane properties and structure. However, the construction and dimensions of these models excluded their direct optical microscopic observation. Since the introduction of the simple method of liposome electroformation in alternating electric field giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) have become an important model imitating biological membranes. Due to the average diameter of GUVs reaching up to 100 µm, they can be easily observed under a fluorescent or confocal microscope provided that the appropriate fluorescent probe was incorporated into the lipid phase during vesicle formation. GUVs can be formed from different lipid mixtures and they are stable in a wide range of physical conditions such as pH, pressure or temperature. This mini-review presents information about the methods of GUV production and their usage. Particularly, the use of GUVs in studying lipid phase separation and the appearance and behavior of lipid domains (rafts) in membranes is discussed but also other examples of GUVs use in membrane research are given. The experience of the authors in setting up the GUV-forming equipment and production of GUVs is also presented.

Opis:
An important application of state estimation is feedback control: an estimate of the state (typically the mean estimate) is used as input to a state-feedback controller. This scheme is known as observer based control, and it is a common way of designing an output-feedback controller (i. e. a controller that does not have access to perfect state measurements). In this paper, under the fact that both the estimator dynamics and the state feedback dynamics are stable we propose a separation principle for Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy control systems with Lipschitz nonlinearities. The considered nonlinearities are Lipschitz or meets an integrability condition which have no influence on the LMI to prove the stability of the associated closed-loop system. Furthermore, we give an example to ullistrate the applicability of the main result.

Three types of chelating depressants were studied for chalcopyrite/pyrite separation, including S-S, S-O, and O-O types, via density functional theory calculations and microflotation. The calculation results indicate that the depressant’s chelating atoms have large coefficient and great activity according to the molecular frontier orbital (HOMO and LUMO) and the orbital coefficients. For S-S type of depressant, S atom in both keto or enol forms won’t affect their HOMO and LUMO patterns and the orbital contributions. For S-O type, the presence of N atom in the ring structure of a molecular will increase the reactivity of O-Cu while weak S-Cu. For O-O type, the electron supply capacity of benzene ring is higher than strain chain, and atom N in strain chain increased their electron supply capacity. The microflotation results basically confirmed the prediction based on the calculation. The simulation results demonstrate that the interaction of a depressant with metals and minerals are affected obviously by the spatial structure and electronic structure of an atom in its molecular.

Opis:
The paper concerns the existence of weak solutions to the Cahn-Hilliard-Gurtin system coupled with nonstationary elasticity. The system describes phase separation process in elastically stressed material. It generalizes the Cahu-Hilliard equation by admitting a more general structure and by coupling diffusive and elastic effects. The system is studied with the help of a singularly perturbed problem which has the form of a well-known phase field model coupled with elasticity. The established existence results are restricted to the homogeneous problem with gradient, energy tensor and elasticity tensor independent of the order parameter.

This paper presents the method used for the creation of ship traffic models in Southern Baltic Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS). The analysis of ship traffic was performed by means of statistical methods with the use of historical AIS data. The paper presents probabilistic models of ship traffic’s spatial distribution and its parameters. The results showed that there is a correlation between the standard deviation of traffic flow and TSS lane width that can be used in practical applications to ensure the safety of navigation; improve navigation efficiency, safety and risk analysis in given area, and for the creation of a general model of ship traffic flow.

Opis:
Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a model-based control method based on a receding horizon approach and online optimization. A key advantage of MPC is that it can accommodate constraints on the inputs and outputs. This paper proposes a max-plus general modeling framework adapted to the robust optimal control of air traffic flow in the airspace. It is shown that the problem can be posed as the control of queues with safety separation-dependent service rate. We extend MPC to a class of discrete-event system that can be described by models that are linear in the max-plus algebra with noise or modeling errors. Regarding the single aircraft as a batch, the relationships between input variables, state variables and output variable are established. We discuss some key properties of the system model and indicate how these properties can be used to analyze the behavior of air traffic flow. The model predictive control design problems are defined for this type of discrete event system to help prepare the airspace for various robust regulation needs and we give some extensions of the air traffic max-plus linear systems.
