Opis:
The paper presents a tentative solution to the problem of olfaction-based mobile robot navigation in the chemical plume. This type of navigation requires fast and reliable detection of small gradient of gas concentration in 3D space. The special sensor system designed to detect odour plume with significantly reduced inertia named ”chemical scanner” was proposed [5]. A special aƩention has been given to evaluate sensing system performance in stable and repeatable conditions. The ability to detect small gradient of gas concentration was examined on a special test bench. The real spatial distribution of tested gas in the air was estimated using CFD simulation. The results proved that the real-time detection of small (a few percent of measured value) difference in gas concentration on very short distance (a several centimetres range) is possible. The next stage of research will examine of the developed sensor system on the mobile plaƞorm for its navigation.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of investigations of zinc oxide (ZnO) layers as a potential sensing material, being affected by certain selected gaseous environments. The investigations concerned the optical transmission through thin ZnO layers in wide spectral ranges from ultraviolet to the near infrared. The effect of the gaseous environment on the optical properties of zinc oxide layers with a thickness of ~ 400 nm was analyzed applying various technologies of ZnO manufacturing. Three kinds of ZnO layers were exposed to the effect of the gaseous environment, viz.: layers with relatively slight roughness (RMS several nm), layers with a considerable surface roughness (RMS some score of nm) and layers characterized by porous ZnO structures. The investigations concerned spectral changes in the transmission properties of the ZnO layers due to the effect of such gases as: ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the atmosphere of synthetic air. The obtained results indicated the possibility of applying porous ZnO layered structures in optical gas sensors.

Opis:
Infrared detector technologies engineered from III-V semiconductors such as strained-layer superlattice, quantum well infrared photodetectors, and quantum dot infrared photodetectors provide additional flexibility to engineer bandgap or spectral response cut-offs compared to the historical high-performance detector technology of mercury/cadmium/telluride. The choice of detector cut-off depends upon the sensing application for which the system engineer is attempting to maximize performance within an expected ensemble of operational scenarios that define objects or targets to be detected against specific environmental backgrounds and atmospheric conditions. Sensor performance is typically characterised via one or more metrics that can be modelled or measured experimentally. In this paper, the authors will explore the impact of detector cut-off wavelength with respect to different performance metrics such as noise equivalent temperature difference and expected target detection or identification ranges using analytical models developed for several representative sensing applications encompassing a variety of terrestrial atmospheric conditions in the mid-wave and long-wave infrared wavelength bands. The authors will also report on their review of recently published literature concerning the relationships between cut-off wavelength and the other detector performance characteristics such as quantum efficiency or dark current for a variety of detector technologies.
