Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the structure of self-image and the level of self-acceptance in girls with conduct disorder and to determine the relationship of self-image and self-acceptance with the expression of anger. Material and method: The study included 59 girls diagnosed with conduct disorder who had been placed in a youth detention centre. The subjects were asked to complete the Polish adaptation of the Adjective Check List by H.B. Gough and A.B. Heilbrun and the Anger Expression Scale (SEG) by N. Ogińska-Bulik and Z. Juczyński. A structured interview was used to obtain social and demographic information. Results: Girls with conduct disorder checked a higher total number of adjectives than girls from the control group. They selected more unfavourable adjectives and fewer favourable adjectives than pupils from the control group. The selections made by the study group had a lower communality score. Girls with diagnosed conduct disorder presented a lower level of self-acceptance. Discussion: The literature shows that adolescents with conduct disorder often consider themselves to be worthless. The results of the present study also indicate that girls from a youth detention centre had a more negative self-image in comparison with girls from the control group. A negative self-image was associated with more frequent indirect or direct externalisation of anger, which is often considered tantamount to aggression and less effective control of anger. Conclusions: Girls with conduct disorder are different from girls in the control group in terms of the structure of self-image and the level of self-acceptance. There are links between self-image and anger expression styles in the study group. Individuals with conduct disorder who had a more positive self-image internalised their anger more often, whereas those who had a more negative self-image externalised their anger more frequently and controlled it to a lesser degree.
Cel pracy: Badanie miało na celu ocenę struktury obrazu siebie i poziomu samoakceptacji dziewcząt z zaburzeniami zachowania, a także określenie związku obrazu siebie i samoakceptacji z ekspresją gniewu. Materiał i metoda: W badaniu uczestniczyło 59 dziewcząt umieszczonych w zakładzie poprawczym ze zdiagnozowanymi zaburzeniami zachowania. Badane zostały poproszone o wypełnienie Listy Przymiotnikowej (Adjective Check List) H.B. Gougha i A.B. Heilbruna w adaptacji polskiej oraz Skali Ekspresji Gniewu autorstwa N. Ogińskiej-Bulik i Z. Juczyńskiego. W celu uzyskania informacji o charakterze społeczno-demograficznym wykorzystano wywiad strukturalizowany. Wyniki: Dziewczęta z zaburzeniami zachowania zaznaczały większą całkowitą liczbę przymiotników niż dziewczęta z grupy kontrolnej. W porównaniu z uczennicami wybierały więcej przymiotników o zabarwieniu negatywnym, a mniej – o zabarwieniu pozytywnym. Wskazania grupy badanej były mniej typowe. Dziewczęta ze zdiagnozowanymi zaburzeniami zachowania prezentowały niższy poziom samoakceptacji. Omówienie: Z literatury przedmiotu wynika, że młodzież z zaburzeniami zachowania często uważa siebie za bezwartościową. Również wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują, iż dziewczęta z placówki resocjalizacyjnej miały bardziej negatywny obraz siebie w porównaniu z dziewczętami z grupy kontrolnej. Negatywny obraz siebie wiązał się z częstszym kierowaniem gniewu na zewnątrz w sposób pośredni i bezpośredni – często utożsamianym z agresją i mniej efektywnym kontrolowaniem gniewu. Wnioski: Dziewczęta z zaburzeniami zachowania różnią się pod względem struktury obrazu siebie i poziomu samoakceptacji od dziewcząt z grupy kontrolnej. W grupie badanej występują związki między obrazem siebie a stylami ekspresji gniewu. Osoby z zaburzeniami zachowania mające bardziej pozytywny obraz siebie częściej kierowały gniew do wewnątrz. Te zaś, które miały bardziej negatywny obraz siebie, częściej kierowały gniew na zewnątrz i w mniejszym stopniu go kontrolowały.

Dancing not only improves our development, but also changes us. It changes our attitude to many issues. It influences our temperament thus transforming the perception of our body. The chief aim of this research was to prove that dancing classes are a form of work on reaching self-awareness and that they have therapeutic properties. The subjects were female participants of all kinds of dancing classes, conducted in various schools by different instructors. 51 females, aged 20–60 years old voluntarily participated in a diagnostic survey. Dancing class participants, often unknowingly, undergo a certain metamorphosis. Indisputably, dancing has therapeutic influence; it allows to create and discover hitherto unknown recesses of ourselves. Dancing classes considerably diminish our low self-esteem and distorted perception of our body. The analysis of research shows that behavior of women who participated in dancing class change so that they can more effectively fulfill their life aims.

This study tested whether compassionate goals to support others and self-image goals to maintain and defend desired self-images: 1) are equivalent constructs across three cultures (U.S., Japan, Poland); 2) overlap with interdependent self-construal; and 3) predict relationships and growth measures similarly in each country. We re-analyzed data from American (n = 130) and Japanese (n = 203) students, reported in Niiya et al. (2013), along with new data from Poland (n = 246). Single and multiple group confirmatory analyses showed that the two-factor structure holds across the three cultures. Interdependence correlated with compassionate and self-image goals only in Japan. In all three samples, compassionate goals correlated with non-zero-sum belief, feeling close, growth-seeking, self-compassion, and learning from failures, whereas self-image goals correlated with defensive responses to conflicts and validation-seeking. Our results suggest that compassionate and self-image goals may serve similar functions in relationships and growth across cultures.

The study focuses on the three main types of the image of PR manager - self-image, perceived image and professional image. Its purpose is to identify all the image attributes needed for a position of PR manager. In the theoretical part, image is defined as the combination of both external and internal reflections of an individual, object or company creating values and awareness. The research part is the application of theoretical principles in the practical operations of three PR managers from the insurance sector and four PR managers from the bank sector. Research is in the form of an 8-question structured interview and qualitative response analyses. The result of the issue is an empirical assessment of the gathered information, studied literature and research. In self-image description the managers describe themselves as creative, systematic, reliable, extrovert, social with excellent communication skills. The perceived image of PR managers requires responsibility, friendliness, helpfulness, politeness and empathy. The professional image of PR managers requires a professional dress code, responsibility, creativity, excellent communication skills, openness to new ideas and experiences. Primary analytical and organizational attributes are considered as an advantage in the profession of PR manager as well.

This article is concerned with the relationship between adult attachment styles and generalized negativistic social beliefs (i.e. pessimistic expectations concerning human nature and interpersonal relations). Two general dimensions of attachment styles, avoidance and anxiety, are considered to be manifestations of an individual’s image of other people and of the self, respectively. We suggest that both dimensions may be a substantial basis for formulating negative beliefs about the social world. Firstly, we believe that a high level of negativistic social beliefs can be positively predicted by the growth of avoidance (negative image of others) and anxiety (negative image of self). Secondly, we formulate an expected interaction effect. Although the nature of such an interaction is ambiguous, it may be argued as having a synergistic as well as antagonistic pattern. These hypotheses were tested and supported (in favor of an antagonistic pattern of interaction in the case of the second hypothesis) on a representative sample of adult Poles (N = 853).

Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye represents the obsessed involvement of the characters in the world of appearances. This paper explores how the central character’s self-image is determined by the primary Subject, which orients social perception, and how the characters are primarily concerned with their public image since social perception from without (how they are perceived) shapes their self-perception. As the process of self-realization is interrupted by the disorientation of self-perception, the characters cannot construct a true Self of their own. Their vision is disabled by the prevailing primary Subject, and the persona is unable to perceive the world from her perspective reversing the existing binary. As there is no self-perception (a point of reference), identity formation ends in failure, and the persona turns out to be a passive object having a negative image of herself. She, first, suffers from split of personality and schizophrenia, then declines her negative self-image through surrogate images, and finally drives herself to insanity.

The article presents the results of theoretical analysis and empirical investigation of the relationship between self-attitude and attitude towards other people, including representatives of other nationalities. Self-attitude is viwed as a stable, emotionally charged of your own self. The interdependance of self-attitude indicators with the features of ethnic tolerance and the character of other individuals' attitude in complicated situations has been researched. Individuals with different self-image are shown to perceive their opponents just as they perceive their own personality. Perception and emotional attitude both to their own ethnic group and other ethnicities is closely related to the attitude of the individual to himself, and common factors in predisposition to criticism and condescension towards themselves and others.

The main aim of this paper is to verify the assumption that pronunciation learning during a course of phonetics is hindered by the feeling of anxiety (Phonetics Learning Anxiety) experienced by foreign language (FL) learners studying English as their major at universities or colleges. A study carried out among 32 students of the School of English at Wroclaw University (Poland) revealed a significant negative correlation of moderate strength between the subjects’ level of Phonetics Learning Anxiety (PhLA) and their attainments on pronunciation tests (sentence, passage and word reading) conducted after a 45-hour (30x90-minute lessons) course of practical phonetics. The detrimental effect of PhLA on pronunciation learning was further supported by t-tests, in which the pronunciation of high anxiety subjects was found to be at a significantly lower level than that of low anxiety students. The Phonetics Learning Anxiety Scale, a 44-item questionnaire based on a 6-point Likert scale, designed for the purpose of the research sheds light on the nature of this peculiar type of apprehension experienced by advanced FL learners in a specific educational context (i.e. a traditional classroom, rather than a language or computer laboratory), in which the major focus is on pronunciation practice. The obtained quantitative data imply that such factors as fear of negative evaluation (represented by general oral performance apprehension and concern over pronunciation mistakes, pronunciation self-image, pronunciation self-efficacy and self-assessment) and beliefs about the nature of FL pronunciation learning are significant sources of PhLA. Anxiety about the transcription test (IPA Test Anxiety) - one of the other hypothetical determinants of PhLA - did not prove to be correlated with the general level of Phonetics Learning Anxiety

Article present the possibilities of use dance classes and psychosocial factors in a specific environmental associated with among demoralized adolescents. In this paper presents research conducted on a group of adolescents whose behaviour is characterized by demoralization and whose commitment of criminal offences resulted in them becoming the subject of an confinement corrective measure, i.e. being placed in a youth educational centre. The Adjective Check List ACL created by H.G. Gough and A. Helibrun, as well as the Profile of Mood States (POMS) developed by McNair, Lorr and Droppleman were used in the research. After twelve weeks of systematic dance classes, the test was repeated and noticeable changes in self-perception of the surveyed girls were observed. The average values of 14 out of 37 scales of the ACL questionnaire after the end of the project differed significantly (p <0.05) compared to the results before the start of the project. Moreover, after each week of the project, a comparison of the survey results with the POMS questionnaire was carried out in terms of the severity of individual moods. The analysis shows that the subjects successively had a significant decrease in the level of all five negative states and an increase in positive mood

The article proposes a methodological framework of psycholexical studies, derived from personality theory, as a reliable base for the extraction of universal dimensions of self-image congruence. The aim of our study was to explore the psycholexical structure of a lexicon of comparisons made by Polish consumers of goods when comparing themselves to typical brand users of particular goods. The consumer lexicon was compiled as a result of 586 individual interviews with respondents aged 13 to 82 (M = 36,6; SD = 16,9), 51.8% of whom were females. The study involved 294 brands representing 29 categories of goods. The lexicon of 17,075 attributes of typical brand users was classified by 13 judges according to the classification system adopted from German lexical studies. Judicial decisions underwent psychometric verification in the aspect of their validity and internal reliability; they were found satisfactory. The results of judicial classifications were demonstrated in the aspect of desirable, similar, and undesirable attributes in the consumers’ self-concept, and discussed with reference to the structure of a person-descriptive lexicon in the Polish language. The results showed that consumers observe both positive and negative attributes in typical brand users and over a half of all the attributes of consumers are personality descriptors. The study allowed us to extract a high-frequency list of consumer descriptors that can be applied in quantitative self-image congruence research.

Introduction: One of the factors which increase the rehabilitation efficacy and accelerate the convalescence and return to society of the patients after myocardial infarction may be the self-care attitude. Therefore it seems justifiable to seek such factors which will affect the self-care level. Self-estimation belongs to the most important determinants of coping efficacy and undertaking health behaviours. Considering that health behaviours may be treated as a behavioural manifestation of the self-care attitude, it is probable that the correlation between the self-image and self-care attitude appears to be strong. Aim: The aim of the research was determination of the strength of the correlation between the level of self-image and selfcare attitude as well as the care types in patients after myocardial infarction. Methods: The study involved 127 persons whohad myocardial infarction for the first time and did not undergo any other severe concomitant illnesses. The study covered 28 women and 99 men aged from 39 to 81, with the average age 57.74. The study consisted in completing the KTS questionnaire measuring the self-care level and OS questionnaire measuring the self-image level. The results were analysed statistically and discussed. Results: Analysis of the levels of self-care and self-image in patients after myocardial infarction showed a strong correlation between those variables at the 0.01 significance level. It is a linear correlation which means that the higher the self-image level, the higher the self-care level. This rule applies to each of the care dimensions, i.e. Responsibility, involvement and future perspective as well as each of the types of self-care. Conclusions: The research indicated a strong correlation between the self-care level and types and the self-image level in those who underwent myocardial infarction. It appeared that the higher the self-image level after myocardial infarction, the higher the self-care level and the fuller the self-care. Therefore the self-acceptance level should be increased in the patient, because in the case of those who underwent myocardial infarction it is extremely important for development of the self-care attitude. A change in the self-image from negative into positive may be directly translated into an increase in the self-care level.
Wstęp: Jednym z czynników zwiększających skuteczność rehabilitacji i przyspieszających proces zdrowienia oraz powrotu do społeczeństwa osób po zawałach serca może być postawa troski o siebie. W związku z powyższym zasadne wydaje się poszukiwanie takich czynników, które wpływać będą na poziom troski o siebie. Ocena samego siebie należy do najistotniejszych wyznaczników efektywności radzenia sobie i podejmowania zachowań zdrowotnych. Biorąc pod uwagę, że zachowania zdrowotne traktować można jako behawioralny przejaw postawy troski o siebie, istnieje prawdopodobieństwo, że związek między obrazem siebie a postawą troski o siebie okaże się równie silny. Cel: Celem badań było określenie siły związku między poziomem obrazu siebie a postawą troski o siebie i rodzajami troski o siebie pacjentów po zawałach serca. Metody: Badaniami zostało objętych 127 osób, które przeszły zawał serca po raz pierwszy i nie miały innych poważnych chorób towarzyszących. Przebadanych zostało 28 kobiet i 99 mężczyzn, w przedziale wiekowym 39-81 lat, średnia wieku wynosiła 57,74 roku. Badanie polegało na wypełnieniu kwestionariusza KTS mierzącego poziom troski o siebie oraz kwestionariusza OS mierzącego poziom obrazu siebie. Wyniki badań poddano analizie statystycznej i omówieniu. Wyniki: Analiza poziomu troski o siebie i obrazu siebie pacjentów po zawałach serca wykazała silny związek między tymi zmiennymi na poziomie istotności 0,01. Związek ten ma charakter liniowy i oznacza, że im wyższy poziom obrazu siebie, tym wyższy poziom troski o siebie. Reguła ta dotyczy każdego z wymiarów troski, a więc odpowiedzialności, zaangażowania i perspektywy przyszłościowej oraz każdego z rodzajów troski o siebie. Wnioski: Przeprowadzone badania wykazały silny związek między poziomem i rodzajami troski o siebie a poziomem obrazu siebie osób po zawałach serca. Okazało się, że im wyższy poziom obrazu siebie po przebytym zawale serca, tym wyższy poziom troski o siebie i pełniejsza troska o siebie. W związku z powyższym należy zwiększać u pacjenta poziom akceptacji samego siebie, gdyż w przypadku osób po zawałach serca ma to niezwykle istotne znaczenie dla kształtowania postawy troski o siebie. Zmiana obrazu siebie z negatywnego na pozytywny może w bezpośredni sposób przełożyć się na zwiększenie poziomu troski o samego siebie.

The aim of this study was to assess severity of depression in various types of eating disorders and correlation between depressive symptoms and self-image in a group of girls with diagnosed eating disorders, depressive disorders and in a control group of age-matched schoolgirls from the Krakow area. Study population: Statistical analysis encompassed 54 patients with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa restrictive type (ANR), 22 girls with anorexia nervosa – binge eating/purging type (ANB), 36 girls with bulimia (BUL), 36 with a diagnosis of depressive disorders (DEP) and 85 schoolgirls from Krakow metropolitan area (KON). Method: Polish version of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Offer Self-Image Questionnaire (OSIQ) were used in the analysis. Analysed were differences in BDI scores between the above-mentioned 5 groups, as well as correlations between BDI and OSIQ scores. Results: Intergroup differences in BDI scores proved statistically significant (F4.223=24.67; p<0.001). In order to assess intergroup differences, the Tamhane T2 post hoc test was used. In the KON group, mean BDI score was 10.40 (SD 8.55), in the ANR group – 17.34 (SD 10.91), in ANB – 28.05 (SD 14.69), in BUL – 29.55 (SD 11.47) and in DEP – 23.46 (SD 13.93). Significant differences were noticed between mean scores obtained in the KON group and all other clinical group, as well as between ANR, ANB and BUL groups. In all groups examined, we observed a correlation between increasing depressiveness measured by BDI score and deterioration of self-image measured by OSIQ score. This dependency was seen in all scales except Sexual Attitudes scale in KON and DEP groups, in the Vocational and Educational Goals scale and Family Attitudes scale in ANR group. In the BUL group, lack of correlations was seen in Vocational and Educational Goals’ scale and Family Attitudes scale, as well as in Superior Adjustment and Mastery of External World scale. Smallest number (3) of significant correlations was noticed in the ANB group. Due to a significant difference between ANR and BUL groups in the patients’ age (those in the ANR group were younger), correlation of BDI score with patients’ age was analysed too. Such a correlation could not be demonstrated neither in the analysis of the entire group of eating disorders, nor in particular diagnostic subgroups. Conclusions: Results obtained indicate a heterogeneity of groups of eating disorders in the context of self-image and presence of depressive symptoms measure by the BDI scale. Level of depressiveness measured by the BDI score in particular groups of eating disorders may influence differences noticed in self-image of these patients, as measured by the OSIQ scale. Furthermore, some aspects of self-image specific for particular diagnostic groups are not associated with depressiveness.
Celem badania jest ocena depresyjności w poszczególnych grupach zaburzeń odżywiania się oraz ocena związku objawów depresyjnych z obrazem siebie w grupie pacjentek z rozpoznaniem zaburzeń odżywiania się, zaburzeń depresyjnych oraz wśród uczennic szkół krakowskich. Badana grupa: W analizach statystycznych użyto danych 54 pacjentek z rozpoznaniem anoreksji restrykcyjnej (ANR), 22 z rozpoznaniem anoreksji żarłoczno-wydalającej (ANB), 36 z rozpoznaniem bulimii (BUL), 36 z rozpoznaniem zaburzeń depresyjnych (DEP) oraz 85 uczennic szkół krakowskich (KON). Metoda: W analizach użyto wyników polskich wersji Inwentarza Depresji Becka (BDI) oraz Kwestionariusza Obrazu Siebie D. Offera (OSIQ). Zbadano różnice między 5 grupami w zakresie otrzymanych wyników BDI. Przeprowadzono również analizę korelacji pomiędzy BDI a OSIQ. Wyniki: Różnice między 5 grupami w zakresie otrzymanych wyników BDI okazały się istotne statystycznie (F4,223=24,67; p<,001). W celu zbadania różnic pomiędzy grupami użyto testu post hoc T2 Tamhane’a. W grupie KON średni wynik BDI wyniósł 10,40 (SD 8,55) punktu, w grupie ANR – 17,34 (SD 10,91), ANB – 28,05 (SD 14,69), BUL – 29,55 (SD 11,47), DEP – 23,46 (SD 13,93). Istotne statystycznie różnice wystąpiły pomiędzy średnimi KON a wszystkimi grupami klinicznymi oraz grupą ANR a ANB i BUL. We wszystkich badanych grupach obserwowaną zależnością było powiązanie narastającej depresyjności mierzonej BDI z pogorszeniem obrazu siebie mierzonego OSIQ. Zależność ta dotyczyła wszystkich skal z wyjątkiem skali Relacji seksualnych w grupach KON i DEP, Wykształcenia i celów zawodowych oraz Relacji rodzinnych w grupie ANR. W grupie BUL brak zależności dotyczył także skal Wykształcenia i celów zawodowych oraz Relacji rodzinnych, a także dodatkowo skal Dobre przystosowanie oraz Radzenie sobie. Najmniej, bo tylko trzy istotne zależności obserwowano w grupie ANB. Z uwagi na stwierdzoną istotną statystycznie różnicę pomiędzy grupami ANR a BUL w kontekście wieku pacjentek (pacjentki z grupy ANR okazały się młodsze) przeprowadzono również analizę związku wyników BDI z wiekiem pacjentek. Związek taki nie wystąpił ani w analizie w całej grupie zaburzeń odżywiania się, ani w poszczególnych grupach diagnostycznych. Wnioski: Otrzymane wyniki wskazują na niejednorodność grupy zaburzeń odżywiania się w kontekście samooceny obecności objawów depresyjnych mierzonej BDI. Poziom depresyjności mierzonej BDI pomiędzy poszczególnymi typami zaburzeń odżywiania się może wpływać na obserwowane różnice w obrazie siebie pacjentek mierzonym OSIQ. Zarazem niektóre specyficzne dla poszczególnych grup diagnostycznych aspekty obrazu siebie pozostają niepowiązane z depresyjnością.
