Opis:
The influence of sandblasting on surface and subsurface of stainless steel is investigated using variable energy positron beam (VEP), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Samples of stainless steel were blasted using 110 μm particles of Al2O3 under different pressure and time duration. In the case of sandblasting for 90 s, the reduction of positron diffusion length depending on the applied pressure was observed. Sandblasting during 30 s leads only to the reduction of positron diffusion length to about 60 nm for all samples. Positron lifetimes close to 170 ps measured using positrons emitted directly from the source point to the presence of vacancies on the dislocation lines. SEM and AFM images show that surface roughness depends rather on pressure of sandblasting than time of exposition.

Opis:
The epoxy-bonded joints are widely employed in aerospace in the Composite Patch Bonded Repair (CPBR) method used for repair metallic and composite structures. The properties of epoxy usually meet the mechanical and environmental requirements, but the durability of bonded joints depends also on the surface preparation. The most common techniques used for the surface preparation are Forest Product Laboratory’s (FPL) technique and Phosphoric Acid Anodizing (PAA). Both methods ensure very good adhesion but they have some disadvantages. They require the application of toxic and aggressive acids, dangerous for the operator. Also, the use of acids for cleaning the surfaces can cause corrosion. The sandblasting treatment of metal surfaces ensures quite good adhesion. This technique requires neither specialist equipment nor the use of toxic substances. Recommended by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) the technique is also used by the Air Force Institute of Technology. Sol Gel is a new product developed for the treatment of metal surfaces before bonding. It is not hazardous for the operator and it does not cause corrosion due to its specific chemical composition. The article describes the behavior of bonded joints between two metal surfaces prepared using sandblasting and Sol Gel. The investigations were carried out in various environment conditions according to the ASTM Standards.

Opis:
In this work, we performed comparative studies of the effect of surface preparation of Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb biomedical alloys and the influence of endothelial cells on their corrosion behaviour in PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline). Two different methods of surface modification were applied – polishing and sandblasting. The polished Ti6Al7Nb alloy was found to have the best resistance against general corrosion in PBS. It was characterized by the lowest corrosion rate, the widest passive range and the lowest reactivity. Both alloys prepared by sandblasting exhibited worse corrosion properties in comparison to the polished ones. This can be associated with a greater development of their surface and the presence of Al2O3 grains which caused an increase of corrosion potential but might also influence the weakening of the passive layer. Results of potentiodynamic anodic polarization indicated that more resistant to pitting corrosion was Ti6Al7Nb alloy regardless of the method of surface preparation. In those cases, anodic polarization caused only an increase of passive layer, while in the case of sandblasted Ti6Al4V alloy it caused a pitting corrosion. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that the niobium-titanium alloys had higher corrosion resistance than titanium alloys with vanadium. Moreover, it was stated that endothelial cells improved the corrosion resistance of all the titanium alloys examined.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to investigate the effect of sandblasting surface treatment, before the bonding process, on the strength of the adhesive joints of the three types of aluminium alloy sheets. Three values of pressure were used during the sandblasting process, i.e. 0.41 MPa, 0.51 MPa and 0.56 MPa. After mechanical treatment, the samples of aluminium alloys sheets were degreased three times with acetone by immersion. The elements were bonded with single-lap joints using two components epoxy adhesive. After the curing process, the shear strength tests of the aluminium alloy adhesive joints were conducted, according to the DIN EN 1465 standard. The surface topography of all samples was measured, and the most important surface roughness parameter and its waviness were determined. Based on the experimental results, it was noticed that, among others, while using the same pressure value during sandblasting of different aluminium alloys, the roughness parameters Ra and Rz of the obtained surfaces differed depending on the type of alloy. It is also to notice that more than two times strength of the joints was obtained by those made of the aluminium alloy sheet, which was subjected to heat treatment.
