Opis:
Erythrocytes contain reactive forms of oxygen (superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical) and reactive form of nitrogen (nitric oxide anion, S-nitrosothiols, peroxynitrite anion). Reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species inactivate enzymatic (methemoglobin reductase, Cu, Zn-Superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) and non-enzymatic (glutathione, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, ascorbate) antioxidants. Their quantity in erythrocytes increases in case of exposure to xenobiotics, in erythrocytes containing pathological hemoglobin, in erythrocytes with the enzymatic defects of the glycolytic or pentose cycle, in erythrocytes found in arterial and venous thrombi, and in the blood extravasated to tissues and body cavity. In such cases are observed in erythrocytes: structure modification of hemoglobin and membrane proteins, and lipids peroxidation. These processes cause changes of shape, decrease of flexibility, decrease of resistance to hemolysis, Heinz's bodies production and shorten the life span of red cells.

Opis:
Reactive Nitrogen (Nr) is produced from natural and human activity, the use of fuel, the activities of industry, and agriculture. The Nr from agriculture is used to produce food crops, but excess Nr has an impact on the surrounding land. Landfills also generate Nr from the decomposition of waste which then releases the leachate containing Nr. This study aimed to determine the value of Nr generated by landfills, the effect of Nr on the environment, and the performance of Nr when used in Constructed Wetlands (CW). Review papers were collected from several studies and publications. Nr commonly found in leachate landfills include: NH4, NH3, NO2, and NO3. The Nr present in landfill leachate at CW can be used for proper plant development and growth, which significantly increases and enhances its quality and yield by playing an important role in the biochemical and physiological functions of plants. In addition, the content of hazardous substances in landfill leachate can also be processed using CW. This review paper discusses the effects of Nr from human activities ending up in landfills. The landfill leachate with Nr content can be used in CW for plant growth.

Although multiple factors are associated with cardiovascular pathology, there is now an impressive body of evidence that free radicals and nonradical oxidants might cause a number of cardiovascular dysfunctions. Both direct damage to cellular components and/or oxidation of extracellular biomolecules, e.g. LDL, might be involved in the aetiology of cardiovascular diseases. The key molecules in this process seem to be iron and copper ions that catalyse formation of the highly reactive hydroxyl radical. Chelation of iron ions has a beneficial effect on the processes associated with the development of atherosclerosis and formation of post-ischemic lesions. These findings are indirectly supported by the increasing body of evidence that stored body iron plays a crucial role in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Opis:
Oxygen is one of the most important molecules on Earth mainly because of the biochemical symmetry of oxygenic photosynthesis and aerobic respiration that can maintain homeostasis within our planet's biosphere. Oxygen can also produce toxic molecules, reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS play a dual role in biological systems, since they can be either harmful or beneficial to living systems. They can be considered a double-edged sword because at moderate concentrations, nitric oxide (NO•), superoxide anion, and related reactive oxygen species play an important role as regulatory mediators in signalling processes. Many of the ROS-mediated responses actually protect the cells against oxidative stress and re-establish "redox homeostasis". On the other hand, overproduction of ROS has the potential to cause damage. In the recent decades, ROS has become a focus of interest in most biomedical disciplines and many types of clinical research. Increasing evidence from research on several diseases shows that oxidative stress is associated with the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus, obesity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, ischaemia/reperfusion injury, obstructive sleep apnea, neurodegenerative disorders, hypertension and ageing.

Opis:
This paper reviews the emissions of reactive nitrogen compounds (RNCs) from modern vehicles fitted with spark ignition engines and three-way catalysts. Specific aspects of the pollutants involved - and their formation - are discussed. Cold start driving cycles are scenarios under which emissions of all four RNCs can be significant; the mechanisms behind emissions trends are explored. Experimental data obtained from two vehicles tested over two different cold start driving cycles are presented and analysed. The use of gravimetric and molar metrics are explored. Ammonia, a species which is currently not regulated for passenger cars in any automotive market, is identified as forming the majority of the RNC emissions over the entire driving cycle. While ammonia emissions are strongly linked to aftertreatment system warmup and periods of high load, significant ammonia emissions were also measured under certain hot-running, low load conditions, and even at idle. For the majority of the duration of the test procedures employed, the RNC profile was dominated by ammonia, which accounted for between 69% and 86% of measured RNCs in the exhaust gas. Emissions are compared to the available legislative precedents (i.e. emissions limits currently in force in various jurisdictions). Finally, possibilities for control of exhaust emissions of currently unregulated RNCs are briefly discussed.

The variability of the marine boundary layer parameters over the Baltic Sea and its sub-basins and their impact on the 6 h, monthly or seasonal deposition of oxidized nitrogen compounds was studied using results of the Hilatar chemistrytransport model, the 6th hour forecasts of the HIRLAM weather prediction model and meteorological measurement data. The monthly load of oxidized nitrogen was highest in the winters of 1993–1995 and 2000, and lowest in 1996–1997 and 2005; no trend was detected. Short-time correlations were low, but a significant correlation of the monthly deposition with the NAO index and ice-season was found over northern sub-basins.

Opis:
This paper examines emissions of reactive nitrogen compounds in the exhaust gas flux of vehicles featuring spark ignition (SI) engines. A range of technical, legal and environmental aspects are considered. A discussion of the fundamentals of the phenomenon of emission of these compounds is presented, together with a brief summary of the negative environmental impacts of these gases. Selected data obtained during chassis dynamometer testing at BOSMAL are presented, together with certain important observations presented in the technical literature. The reader is directed to recent publications of note for further information on emissions to the less well known reactive nitrogen compounds, namely NH3 and N2O. The orders of magnitude of the various reactive nitrogen compounds found in the exhaust gas emitted from SI engines are briefly considered and commented upon. Data are presented on the impact of different fuel types used in SI engines and the reader is directed to various publications on that subject. Finally, important research directions (both current and future) are identified.
