Technical diagnostics is an integral part of the railway maintenance process. Through timely maintenance, in addition to ensuring the safety, functional and technical reliability of the infrastructure, maintenance costs are reduced and downtime losses, due to failures or premature repair requests, are eliminated or reduced. The track infrastructure diagnostic tools have evolved. This is related to, among others, the miniaturisation of instruments, reading accuracy during motion, as well as upgraded measurement automation and result analysis. Currently, data obtained from multifunctional diagnostic tools is the basis for the developed Russian railway infrastructure maintenance and operation digital model. The strategic development of mobile diagnostic labs is the gradual transition to solutions with advanced digital analysis, supported by artificial intelligence, monitoring and forecasting. The article presents the development of mobile labs for the railroad infrastructure condition diagnosis up to the current solutions, in which measurements take place without human intervention and the obtained information is transmitted in real time to the analysis and decision centres.

In view of the crucial role, railways have played historically inland transportation, the West African region still endure to provide an efficient transport system. While road transport has been almost the exclusive predominant transportation mode in the region, the railway is now showing a global comeback. In the absence of a new phase of modernization at the international standard, it is unavoidable that the high demand for mobility of its increasing population and the full exploitation of its natural resource endowment will be constrained. This study presents the past, present, and future developments of the railway sector. The first section includes the brief historical development of the railways, the determinants choices of their location, and the influential parameters for their construction. The second section deals with the present state of the railway infrastructure, operational performance, and railway sector institutions. The last section provides some recent investment in the key construction projects at a national level.

In the paper, a dynamic analysis of a two-level model of the catenary which takes into account periodic distribution of hangers and supports is provided. An analytical method is proposed for calculating the response of the catenary to a uniformly moving pantograph. The model of the catenary is composed of two strings (the contact and carrying cables) connected by lumped mass-spring-dashpot elements equidistantly positioned along the strings. These elements are assumed to be visco-elastic. The pantograph is modelled by a concentrated force which moves along the contact cable. The force exerted by the pantograph varies harmonically. This model is capable of describing coupled wave dynamics of the catenary. The proposed method of calculations is based on the Fourier transformation and, therefore, is applicable only to linear models of the catenary. In the analysis, the periodicity condition is used. The spectral analysis is carried out. General results are illustrated by a numerical example in which the effect of wave propagation is visible.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analizy dynamicznej modelu sieci trakcyjnej z uwzględnieniem charakterystycznej powtarzalności fragmentów konstrukcji zawieszenia przewodu jezdnego i wieszaków. Podano rozwiązanie problemu współdziałania sieci z poruszającym się ze stałą prędkością odbierakiem prądu. Model sieci składa się z dwóh nieskończenie długich strun oddziaływujących ze sobą poprzez sprężysto- tłumiące elementy rozłożone periodycznie. Oddziaływanie odbieraka prądu na dolną strunę modelowane jest harmonicznie zmienną siłą. Stosując transformację Fouriera, przeprowadzono analizę częstotliwościową ruchu układu. Wykorzystano warunek periodyczności. Rezultaty rozważań analitycznych zobrazowano przykładem numerycznym.

The dynamic development of car transport caused that there are more and more nuisance problems associated with this mode of transport and therefore the ways for solving them are in demand in Poland. Transport system which links the various branches of transport, creating a coherent transport chains is rail and intermodal transport. Supporting the growing importance of rail and intermodal transport is primarily aimed at reducing transport costs by improving its organization and using the most effective means of transport at each stage. Moreover, on the one hand, the basic advantages of intermodality are associated with the use of the most effective modes of transport, and on the other hand, intermodality requires the standardization of products carriage in the form of railway transhipment terminals. As a result, intermodal transport facilitates the management of supply chains, generating significant positive external effects, such as reducing the reliance on the most environmentally harmful road transport or reducing time and handling costs.

The series of articles describing aerodynamic phenomena caused by train passage characterise the interaction of a train travelling at high speed with the moving train itself, on other trains, on trackside objects and on people. This interaction can be of two types – generated pressure and slipstream. Apart from the literature analysis, the author’s research was also taken into account. The first part presents the general classification of aerodynamic phenomena, the pressure change waveform in open space caused by the passage of a train and the pressure interaction with trackside objects. Conclusions are presented on the construction of a high-speed rail vehicle and the strength and location of structures on high-speed lines.

Digital transformation in the railway industry is an important element in the development of railways and should benefit commuters, railway operators, infrastructure managers and rolling stock manufacturers. The process of digitization applies to two domains, i.e. customer service and railway companies’ operation. This paper aims to present previous efforts regarding the use of digital technologies in customer relations and in the field of operations and maintenance, which translates into the quality of services provided. This paper highlights important concepts of this domain with respect to passenger and freight transport, infrastructure, railway rolling stock and railway traffic management. It is also argued that the process of digitization needs properly trained staff. Examples of innovative initiatives of Polish and European railway companies are covered.

Th e automatic line block system may be constructed as a chain of autonomous distributed set of functional blocks located along a railway line section, interlocked by the data transmission subsystem and controlled from two ends of the section. Thus, a certain possibility of simultaneously issued contradictory commands creating conflicts during their execution to be settled by a functional block controlled by them particularly while the data transmission subsystem failure occurs have to be considered. Testing of automatic line block system proper functioning in a range of reaction to contradictory commands and examples of typical conflicts and general rules of solving them are discussed in the paper.

This paper focuses on the unobviousness of railway liberalization in the Czech Republic. In its obvious form, the liberalization process, once set into motion, would assume a path-dependent trajectory and result in a liberalized railway market. The liberalization of Czech railway has however resulted in what this paper calls a compensatory monopoly. Compensatory monopoly depicts an informal practice which has allowed the Czech state to compensate the České dráhy (Czech Railways) with a de facto monopoly, while depriving the public rail operator of a de iure monopoly. As the paper claims, the railway liberalization has been a product of the transnationalization of Czech state through its absorption into the global economy and European Union above all. As an accession candidate and later member state of the European Union, the Czech state was obliged to internalize the railway acquis communautaire produced by the European Commission which has consequently transnationalized the Czech national railway. Due to its transnationalizing and simultaneously marketizing character, the railway acquis has also completely restructured the formal institutional setting of the Czech railway, including the social purpose of České dráhy which is no longer to serve the public interest, but rather abide by the market-based logic of business interest. Nonetheless, the acquis internalization has not remained uncontested. On the contrary, the old institutional setting has been further represented by the informal network of České dráhy-state nexus which attempted to reshape the liberalization in a way that would provide České dráhy with a patient capital and enough time to prepare for the competition on the liberalized railway market. The effect of informal practices embodied in the compensatory monopoly has thus proven the railway liberalization in the Czech Republic to be an institutional change with uneven, open-ended and seemingly contradictory outcomes.

Although discussion about connecting Chinese railways to Nepal borders first surfaced in the year 1973, it could not make any headway until the political change of 2006 in Nepal, when the idea of linking Tibet with Kathmandu resurfaced again. However, political instability in Nepal further thwarted it, at least until Nepal faced the Indian blockade in 2015 and had to look for ways to diversify its trade and transit. Thus, for Nepal, China’s railways offer an escape from its dependence on India for trade and transit. But, for Beijing, it offers a strategic gateway to enter South Asia, which is India’s conventional sphere of influence. Although Nepal and its northern neighbor China have agreed to connect Nepal’s capital Kathmandu with the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China through railways, the materialization of such a game-changer is not free from challenges. Against the same backdrop, the objective of this study is to discover various challenges faced by the trans-Himalayan railways including political, bureaucratic, economic, and environmental challenges, and to concurrently identify how the geopolitical challenge tops the list, halting Nepal’s ambition to ‘bridge’ India and China and instead aggravating the possibility of becoming a burden to both the Asian giants. While the available literature on China and South Asia is mostly concentrated on Belt and Road (BRI) projects, ‘debt trap’ narratives, and geopolitical rivalry between India and China, this study would be a new attempt to understand how China’s aim to get connected with South Asia via land is not free of impediments. Using the qualitative method, this study reviews the geopolitical challenges confronted by the trans-Himalayan railway in the context of territorial disputes between India and China in the Himalayan region and the U.S.-Indian strategic partnership to contain the rise of China and its ambitious connectivity projects.

The article provides an overview of passenger transportation on local and international routes by the Lithuanian railways. It identifies the reasons due to which passenger transportation has become increasingly loss-making. Also, factors that may encourage a greater number of people to travel by train are disclosed. The development of this sector up to 2030 is reviewed, i.e. a forecast for increasing the number of passengers, a perspective for the development of electric, diesel trains, passenger wagon fleet, and the levels of estimated investments are provided. It was established that after implementation of the measures envisaged, losses in the passenger transportation field could be cut by 2–3 times.

In comparison, railways are the safest mode of land transport, not only regarding pure safety performance indicators but also considering external costs to society and to a member state. As for Polish railways, the year 2016 was the safest since 2008 even despite the growth of the railway market. There are still elements that need to be taken care of, such as continuous improvement of safety culture so that there can be a consistency in safety statistics, and improvement of total safety performance. The other key aspect is the analysis of human factor with the involvement of professionals in the area of human performance since it seems that current activities are insufficient. Authors would like to summarise this short article regarding railway safety performance by saying that undoubtedly, railways are constantly the mass transport mode to choose regarding the safety of travel.
