The problem of traffic management, especially in big cities is particularly actual. Due to unavoidable motorization increase in number of vehicles has resulted in congestion, traffic jams, difficulty of the movement of pedestrians, increasing the number of accidents. Traffic jams are undesirable because of higher fuel consumption, increased pollution due to exhaust gases as well as noise, etc. The only way to avoid harmful consequences is to optimize the operation of the traffic lights cycle. The purpose of the work is creation the simulation model in GPSS for determining the optimal traffic lights cycle at adjustable crossroads when managing vehicle flows with specified intensities. The mathematical model of adjustable crossroads can be presented as a queuing system. Development of the simulation model includes several stages: programming in GPSS, verification and assessment of the adequacy. The algorithm for optimizing the traffic lights cycle and diagrams are used to find the optimal value of the cycle. The minimum intersection travel time (including time of queuing) is selected as the optimal criterion. The object of study is the traffic lights cycle regulation of the intersection Sovietskaya St. – Rogachevskaya St. – Telman St. in Gomel, Belarus. The existing traffic lights cycle regulation at the intersection Sovietskaya str. – Rogachevskaya str. – Telman str. has been studied. Simulation modeling of the intersection has been created in GPSS and traffic light cycle optimization algorithm has been developed. According to a worked out algorithm the traffic lights cycle at research intersection during saturation flux has been improved. Transport delays both at the existing and optimized crossings have been estimated. Optimization of the traffic lights cycle will increase the traffic capacity of the intersection, reduce the volume of toxic emissions and decrease the accident risk. The developed simulation model can be modified for other types of intersections and used as the basis for a decision support system based on low-level simulation.

Cloud technologies are a very considerable area that influence IT infrastructure, network services and applications. Research has highlighted difficulties in the functioning of cloud infrastructure. For instance, if a server is subjected to malicious attacks or a force majeure causes a failure in the cloud’s service, it is required to determine the time that it takes the system to return to being fully functional after the crash. This will determine the technological and financial risks faced by the owner and end users of cloud services. Therefore, to solve the problem of determining the expected time before service is resumed after a failure, we propose to apply Markovian queuing systems, specifically a model of a multi-channel queuing system with Poisson input flow and denial-of-service (breakdown).

Modern Internet and web applications involve interactions among remote host computers connected by communication networks. Simulation modelling is an important technique to evaluate performance in the implementation of a web-distributed application over given networks formed by computer hosts connected by heterogeneous networks. In this paper we extend a previous work concerning the construction of a queue-based simulator of communication networks. We define a set of new queue-based object types which permit us to specify the behaviour of a web-distributed application whose software components run over different hosts in a given communication network. We apply this technique to show how to build a simulator to evaluate the performance of various software architectures for a web-distributed application run over a given computer network.

Opis:
Stochastic modeling of teletraffic systems with restricted availability and correlated input arrival rates is of great interest in GoS (grade of service) analysis and design of certain telecommunication networks. This paper presents some analytical properties of a recursive nature, associated with the infinitesimal generator of the Markov process which describes the state of a teletraffic system with MMPP (Markov modulated Poisson process) input traffic, negative exponentially distributed service times, finite queue and restricted availability defined through a loss function. Also the possible application of the derived properties to a direct method of resolution of the linear system, which gives the stationary probability distribution of the system, will be discussed.

Opis:
We study the Mθ/G/1/m and Mθ/G/1 queuing systems with the function of the random dropping of customers used to ensure the required characteristics of the system. Each arriving packet of customers can be rejected with a probability defined depending on the queue length at the service beginning of each customer. The Laplace transform for the distribution of the number of customers in the system on the busy period is found, the mean duration of the busy period is determined, and formulas for the stationary distribution of the number of customers in the system are derived via the approach based on the idea of Korolyuk’s potential method. The obtained results are verified with the help of a simulation model constructed with the assistance of GPSS World tools.

Limited resources are a natural feature of most real systems, both artificial and natural ones. This causes the need for effective management of access to existing resources. In this area, queuing systems are of special application. However, they are treated as simple systems for which two states are characteristic: work underload and work on the border of thermodynamic equilibrium.This approach is reflected in existing queue management mechanisms, that need to keep them in one of two mentioned states. On the other hand, they should be considered from the point of complex systems view, for which the third operation states: overload state is natural as well. In order to be closer to this issue, in this paper the authors consider queues performance from the perspective of complex systems.

This work is part of the research activities developed in our department on the construction of vehicle traffic system simulators (TASKQuart.22(2) 135 [1],20(1) 9 [2],17(3) 155 [3],20(3) 273 [5],14(4) 405 [6],9(4) 397 [7],Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory 17 (4) 625 [8]). The modeling of the traffic system is implemented through the use of queuing networks. In this case we analyze, through a simulation, the impact on traffic flows of a structural change that the Municipal Administration has implemented on the urban road system. The study refers to some works published by us previously about the procedures applied by us to build a simulator. In this case we have developed software allowing us to analyze the data tracked by the system simulations to display it graphically. This procedure enables us to clearly compare the traffic system behavior in its new configuration with the traffic system behavior in the previous configuration.

The purpose of the study was to ascertain if changes in the road system introduced and included in the new City Developmen tPlan would resolve the current traffic congestion issues. In a previous work [Pasini L and Sabatini S 2016 TASK Quart. 20 (1) 9], we described a technique that allows a specific system of urban traffic to be associated to a description file system, called Model.dat. This file contains a list of data objects that are defined in the library [Pasini L and Feliziani S 2013 TASK Quart. 17 (3) 155] and that form the architecture model of a vehicular traffic system. This model turns out to be a network of queuing systems. In this work, we illustrate how we adapted the old procedure to study a new urban traffic system. Moreover, through a new tracking procedure, we illustrate how we developed a graphic simulation able to reinterpret the data from the simulation of the queuing networks model, in order to make it easier to check the effectiveness of the simulator and to have a graphical way to analyze the data.

In the previous works we presented a study for modeling and simulation of vehicular traffic systems based on queuing networks. Specifically, in paper (Pasini and Bianchini, 2019), we studied the urban network located in North Siena, in the city of Siena (Italy), in its actual layout, after the Municipality had introduced some changes for vehicular flow management. This system is based on two roundabouts and a crossroad, as shown in Figure 1. In this work, we are going to conclude our previous study, comparing the actual vehicular flow and the flow derived from an alternative system, foreseen by the PRG of the Municipality of Siena which is composed of three roundabouts and which has not been implemented yet.

Opis:
The minimization of the total completion time for asynchronous transmission in distributed systems is discussed. Attention is focused on the problem of message scheduling on part of the sender. Messages to be sent form a queue, and the order in which they are to be sent has to be first established. The methods of scheduling messages, which minimize the factor of the total completion time, are presented herein. The message-scheduling problem becomes considerably complicated when the stream of data transmitted between the sender and the receiver is organized into packets. A scheduling rule, according to which the shortest messages (SPT-Shortest Processing Time) are selected as the first to be sent, has been proven to be appropriate for the proposed model. A heuristic algorithm for scheduling messages with real-time constraints is proposed. The performance of the scheduling algorithm is experimentally evaluated. The results of the study show the possibility of improving the total completion time from a few to ten percent, depending on the characteristics of the sender. Thus, the practicability of the method has been proved.

Opis:
The competence-based learning-teaching process is a significant approach to the didactical process organization. In this paper the mathematical model of the competence-based learning-teaching process is proposed. The model integrates three models: a knowledge representation model (based on the ontological approach), a motivation model (as a behavioral-incentive model) and a servicing model (in a form of the queuing model). The proposed integrated model allows to control the learning-teaching process on different levels of management. The learning-teaching process can be interpreted as competence-based due to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) philosophy. We assume that the competence is a result of fundamental, procedural and project knowledge acquisition in accordance to the incoming European Qualification Framework.
