Opis:
The article concerns the problem of languages used in modeling and solving problems. Its framework stems from the distinction between two problem solving approaches – expert and interactive approach. The language choice is particularly important for the latter; we cannot solve a problem using a language that has not been used for the problem description. The text presents some arbitrarily chosen problem modeling languages, including computer supported ones. Special attention is paid to the SEQUAL and System Dynamics language.

Bertrand's paradox is a longstanding problem within the classical interpretation of probability theory. The solutions 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 were proposed using three different approaches to model the problem. In this article, an extended problem, of which Bertrand's paradox is a special case, is proposed and solved. For the special case, it is shown that the corresponding solution is 1/3. Moreover, the reasons of inconsistency are discussed and a proper modeling approach is determined by careful examination of the probability space.

Opis:
The impact of COVID-19 on the transportation costs of a large-scale company has been examined. Before the pandemic, shift personnel were transported to the factory by shuttles, and after a quick shift change, other shift personnel were transported back to their homes. However, with the implementation of laws mandating the reduction of shuttle seat capacities, transportation costs have risen significantly. To address this issue, a new simultaneous pickup and delivery model is proposed as an alternative to the separate transportation of shift workers. The results of this study indicate that the proposed model provides a substantial advantage in terms of both the number of vehicles used and the total distance traveled, leading to a significant reduction in costs. This research underscores the importance of effective operations research practices for the profitability of companies, particularly in extraordinary circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the possibility of producing high quality and low cost silicon substrates the Epitaxial Lateral Overgrowth technology may find its application in the photovoltaic industry. However, a lateral growth process depends on many technological parameters such as the temperature of the system, the cooling rate, the solvent or the geometry of the mask. For this reason finding optimized settings for these factors in experimental research is difficult and time consuming. Numerical analysis of the growth process leads to better understanding of the fundamentals of the growth process. For this reason a computational model of epitaxial growth was proposed. This paper focuses on the accuracy of the numerical solution of the mass transport process during epitaxial growth. The method was implemented in the Matlab environment for the moving boundary application. The results of the calculations are presented.

Opis:
Enzymes play a significant role in controlling the characteristics of various chemical and biochemical reactions. They act as catalysts that increase the rate of reaction without undergoing any change in quantity. Enzymatic reactions occur through the active sites, which combine with the substrates to form intermediate complexes, subsequently leading to products. An enzyme having two active sites can show cooperative phenomena. Against this background, an enzyme-kinetic mathematical model is formulated using fractional order derivatives. Optimal control mechanism has been incorporated into the fractional-order model system to maximize the product output. Euler-Lagrange optimality conditions are derived for the FOCP (fractional order control problem) using maximum principle. Numerical iterative schemes have been developed to solve the fractional order optimal control problem through Matlab.

Opis:
The paper presents selected multicriteria (multiobjective) approaches to shortest path problems. A classification of multiobjective shortest path (MOSP) problems is given. Different models of MOSP problems are discussed in detail. Methods of solving the formulated optimization problems are presented. An analysis of the complexity of the presented methods and ways of adapting of classical algorithms for solving multiobjective shortest path problems are described. A comparison of the effectiveness of solving selected MOSP problems defined as mathematical programming problems (using the CPLEX 7.0 solver) and multi-weighted graph problems (using modified Dijkstra’s algorithm) is given. Experimental results of using the presented methods for multicriteria path selection in a terrain-based grid network are given.

The paper describes the application of a simulation environment (Tecnomatix Plant Simulation) for solving a real manufacturing problem. The studied case consisted in rebalancing the production line with a specified number of operators on the line. The first stage of the study involved determination of the production cycle and key performance indicators. The production system was then divided into work cells. After that, proposed design assump-tions were verified via a simulation model.

Opis:
Generalization of Fourier law, in particular the introduction of two ‘delay times’ (relaxation time τq and thermalization time τT) leads to the new form of energy equation called the dual-phase-lag model (DPLM). This equation should be applied in a case of microscale heat transfer modeling. In particular, DPLM constitutes a good approximation of thermal processes which are characterized by extremely short duration (e.g. ultrafast laser pulse), extreme temperature gradients and geometrical features of domain considered (e.g. thin metal film). The aim of considerations presented in this paper is the identification of two above mentioned positive constants τq, τT. They correspond to the relaxation time, which is the mean time for electrons to change their energy states and the thermalization time, which is the mean time required for electrons and lattice to reach equilibrium. In this paper the DPLM equation is applied for analysis of thermal processes proceeding in a thin metal film subjected to a laser beam. At the stage of computations connected with the identification problem solution the evolutionary algorithms are used. To solve the problem the additional information concerning the transient temperature distribution on a metal film surface is assumed to be known.

Opis:
The aim of the work is to outline a procedure of finding force-velocity (F-V) characteristics (F = f(V)) of individual skeletal muscles of the human locomotor system. The presentation is based on an example concerning extensors of the elbow joint: the lateral and long heads of triceps brachii (TBCIat and TBCIong). The experimental part of the procedure involves a natural movement of using the upper extremity to push an external object of variable, adjustable load, engaging both the elbow and shoulder joint. Five men aged 23 took part in the experiment. Their task was to push the handle of a physical pendulum whose moment of inertia could be adjusted within the range of 58 kg ∙ m2-450 kg ∙ m2, so as to give it maximum angular velocity. During each trial the movement of the trunk, of the upper extremity and of the pendulum was video recorded and the force applied with the hand to the handle of the pendulum was measured. In order to find the F-V characteristics a simulation model SHOULDER was used, which is capable of solving the synergy problem for muscles of the arm and the shoulder girdle. It was found that despite considerable dispersion of experimental points the respective regression lines revealed a clear tendency of decreasing muscle force for increased shortening velocity of the monoarticular head (TBCIat) and of increasing muscle force for increased lengthening velocity of the Particular head (TBCIong) of the triceps brachii muscle.
